  • Five times Eddie Van Halen sounded like Eric Clapton
Eddie Van Halen has often mentioned that Eric Clapton was his primary guitar influence. But where is it? Mike McAdam from GenX Guitar finds FIVE examples of this from well-known tracks. Does Gene Simmons hear it now? :)

Indeed .. but his influence looms large . And EVH brought many people to him

@@genxguitar3599exactly. Without eddie van halen, most people wouldn't even know about Allan at all. Eddie van halen got Allan Holdsworth signed with warner bros records. AND gave bruford the roots to 5G

@@frankrichards3089Actually Frank Zappa was praising Holdsworth in the 70's. Said he was doing some of the most interesting things with guitar on planet Earth.

Alan Murphy and Ollie Halsall were up there with Holdsworth. Check out the live jam between Ollie Halsall and Allan Holdsworth both in Tempest at the time blast away on the song "Brothers" live.

I know Eddie and Allan were pretty close around '82 or so. I always thought Ed's playing had some Holdsworth feel to it on the 1984 album. I though "Girls Gone Bad" was the best example. I agree he was definately influenced by Eddie.

You can't take couple of notes out of their harmonic context and take it as Holdsworth influence. Its like saying you are a poet inspired by Mark Twain because you and Twain both used the phrases "i am".

@@genxguitar3599 for all intents and purposes, Eddie had 0 Holdsworth influence. Eddie wasn't an improvisor and didn't play over even standard changes, let alone the complex harmony of Holdsworth with bi-tonality, polychords and such. He took a few phrases and played them over static chords.

He has stated numerous times that Holdsworth was an influence. Just because it’s a rock adaptation of it,
      doesn’t mean it isn’t so .

@@genxguitar3599 you can state you have a Holdsworth influence as much as you want. There is no meaningful adaptation of Holdsworth's style into EVH to speak of. You liking what Holdsworth does and actually incorporating some of his elements into your playing are 2 different things.

Maybe evh is nothing like allan because allan obsessively explored the vastness of music through the lense of guitar for the sole purpose of increasing his improvisational skill to please the listener. Evh was a rock guy who was so mindblown by allan that he got him signed with warner bros records when allan was selling music equipment to make rent
