I saw this production on Saturday and it was INCREDIBLE! The Muny always hits it out of the park but this production was done with such clear love and care for the story, and every actor absolutely KILLED IT! As someone who was OBSESSED with the little mermaid as a kid (and who obsessively sang along to Part of Your World and was Ariel for Halloween) this production made my inner child so so happy. Savy Jackson was SUCH a fun Ariel, and Michael Maliakel's singing voice is to DIE for. Don't listen to the racists in the comments, they both were fantastic - along with the rest of the cast!
Imagine getting triggered by a fictional character’s race that you just HAVE to make it known to the world even though the movie’s message is universal and mermaids are not one set race….. People don’t know how live theater works and it shows
Ariel is red head and white sheesh this is lazy and in itself racist trying to rewrite an establish character. Don’t say anything to me unless you are mighty fine with a white Tiana, a white cast of the color purple and an all white cast of roots, same difference
1) White people are not an oppressed minority the way black people are, and Ariel's whiteness is not integral to her story the way blackness is integral to Tiana, Roots, or the Color Purple. So no, it's not the same thing! And it's certainly not racist. 2) As a white redhead who was OBSESSED with the little mermaid and Ariel as a kid, I saw this production live and was DELIGHTED by it. It made my inner child very happy, even though the Ariel on stage didn't look like the one I grew up with. She embodied the essence of Ariel, and that's what's most important. This whole production was such a love letter to the original film, and everyone involved clearly understood what made the story special. 3) There were COUNTLESS little girls in princess dresses at this production, many of whom were white, and I didn't hear any of them crying to their moms or grandmas about Ariel being black. You're getting more worked up about this than literal toddlers. tl;dr - respectfully, I think you need to get some perspective and chill out

I love the puppets in this-in all honesty I think that was a thing missing from the original Broadway cast
