MoonShade Awning - Basecamp Install

- This is the MoonShade awning made by MoonFab (moonfab.com/products/moonshade/). I installed this on our Airstream Basecamp this weekend to test fit for our travel this summer. I would say this is a solid choice vs. the Airstream tents or installed awnings. The price with the anchors comes in at a little over $300.
A HUGE THANK YOU to @moonfabrications for featuring us in their video! Check it out here • Thanks RUclips! We have found so many uses for our Moonshade and am happy we could share with others. If you are interested in purchasing a Moonshade, please visit their website moonfab.com

Nicely done! Just a couple tips from the guy who designed it if I may 😉: I would suggest trying it without the strut pole (basecamp anchors can be set far enough apart that you should have plenty of rigidity on that end, but if you do want to use it, thread it through the webbing loop in the middle before securing to the grommets). Also, you might have an easier time setting it up with less strain on the tension poles if you secure the pole clips *after both poles are already in the corner pockets. If you notice there’s a lot of bending concentrated on the bottom half of the pole when you insert the first pole onto the bottom pocket because you secured the clips first. Anyway, thanks for posting this video! Super helpful for basecamp owners.
Thank you for watching. Found some of this out when we got to grand Teton last month. Sincerely appreciate the notes.
Nice setup...and that Tacoma is nice too!
Thank you!
That’s incredible for the price! Would have cost 12 times as much with airstream!
It's a neat little awning and folds up to the size of a camping chair. Moonshade makes them for trucks/suvs too with suction cup anchors, etc. The struggles with having a tiny camper is you don't get all the bells and whistles that you do on a bigger one.
Can you please post a video or photos of the mounting screws you described in the keder rail to secure the MoonShade 7’ pool? Thanks.
Hi, unfortunately my basecamp is in the shop for a recall at the moment so I can’t get a picture right now. The screws that needed a little tightening were behind the trim in the rail. Basically just tightened them up a little before sliding in the rail mount from moon shade. At around 45 seconds in the video, you can see me tighten one of them down.
Just left the Airstream and watched the repair of serious water damage as a result of the roof rail area being tampered with. We learned that there is a serious problem with the roof r/d that has not been corrected on the 16’ base camps. Curious to see if you develop leaks where you either drilled or removed the manufacture seals. Good Luck
I didn’t have to drill or remove any seals. I tightened 2 screws and removed the trim from the keder rail, but replaced it in all but the two areas for the mounts. Haven’t seen any issues.
@@CajunMile did you put any lap sealant in the holes you drilled or on the screws? That was what a tech at Airstream said someone didn’t do and caused leaking behind the wall. It was so bad Airstream bought this persons Basecamp back and gave them a brand new one. That’s why I asked Bro.
Nice video and awesome camper! Does the Basecamp 20 uses this same one or is there a larger MoonShade Awning for it? Thank you!
The Moonshade is 9’x7’ and can definitely be used on the Basecamp 20. They now have Moonshade XL that is 12’x9’. I’m not sure the exact dimensions of the BC 20 keder rail, but it seems like this one would work.

@@CajunMile thank you for the clarification!
This looks like a good solution. How do you deal with water at the joint between the basecamp and the awning? Does rain get through or does the awning overlap the rail?
Don’t know yet! Best guess is we will be dealing with a bit of a drip. It sits pretty snug, but I don’t think it’ll be water tight.
@@CajunMile I'm looking for something like the Moonshade but with a Keder rail connection. Might just buy the Moonshade and sew a Keder edging onto it for a more water resistant connection.
That’s a good idea.
Do. you leave the anchors installed all the time or do yo install them each time you set up the moonashde?
We leave them installed.
Try suction cups tiedowns instead of screwing into the trailer
With the keder rails on the basecamp, we don’t need the suction cups, but we do have them for other vehicles if we want to use them. Thanks for the comment
So it's a pop-up tent with a $60,000 ⚓️
I guess, if that is the way you look at it. Thanks for the comment.
