I hope you guys test the "water" with this offroad airstream when you're using the 4RN. Not many videos out there show this or the 16X on forest service roads or even off a highway. Looking to also invest with the wife and two dogs out in CO. Enjoy the travels and keep using that solar! Would be neat to see the bottom of the trailer and how that compares to the 4RN or other types you've towed possibly.

I'm older than you are, kids grown and gone, and it's tempting to put a deposit down on one of those. The are very expensive, however. What was your process to choose the 20X? I'm looking at purchasing the same airstream basecamp 20 x for my wife and I. I noticed you tow this with a 2021 TRD Pro 4RUNNER. I also own a TRD Pro 4RUNNER and was wondering about your towing experience with this set up? Pros or cons any input would be helpful. We live in Nevada so we do have elevation issues. One of the reasons I chose the 4RUNNER was the 5,000 lbs towing capacity. Thank for sharing you experiences.

    • @brockjohnson3575
      @brockjohnson3575 2 года назад +3

      The 4Runner does great at handling the Basecamp, but if you are going with a 20X beware because they tongue weight of the 20X is 550 lbs and the max load for the 4Runner’s tongue is rated at only 500 lbs. We wish we had learned this before purchasing, because the Basecamp 20 has a tongue weight of 500. We’ve had no problems with the 4Runner so far (even over mountain passes and in snow), but we are looking into other possible SUV options (such as the Land Rover Defender). In the mean time, we’ll be getting rest wheel airbags to improve suspension. We’ll make a video on the topic soon.

    • @C130ML
      @C130ML 2 года назад +3

      @@brockjohnson3575 Thank you for the response. Old trick to change the tongue wt is how you load the trailer you can move the center of gravity by placement of your cargo in the trailer. The principle is similar to how we loaded aircraft when I was a Loadmaster in the Air Force. For example placing weight back further from the trailer's axle will decrease the weight on the tongue. This might help where you would not need the suspension mods. Merry Christmas

    Did you find you needed a mattress pad cover on that bed to make it softer?

    • @BuildYourTribePodcast
      @BuildYourTribePodcast 6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes we did. The pads themselves are fine for a 1-2 day trip but with longer stays, they’re just too thin. the mattress topper worked for a while but we now have custom cushions with thicker foam (mainly so that we don’t have to deal with rolling the mattress topper every day)

    I’m curious why you guys do so much “dry camping”? The Basecamp has tank heaters and internally routed water lines. Just leave your heater on low and you shouldn’t have any issues. Unless I’m missing something?

    • @tayjohnsonb
      @tayjohnsonb 2 года назад

      We aren’t hooked up most of the time so saving our battery power is necessary. The tank heaters drain the batteries FAST.

    I know this is an older video and you are no longer in the basecamp 20x. But I am on the east coast and noticed you were in my neck of the woods and was curious how the 4Runner handled this area pulling your bs20x. I am wanting this set up and want to make sure its a good choice for me.

    • @TayAndBrock
      @TayAndBrock  Год назад +2

      Hi! We actually still have and use both the Airstream and the 4Runner. The 20X is definitely pushing the limits of the 4Runner, but it does excellent at handling the towing. We took it up and down snowy mountain passes and all over the US. The sag in the back of the 4Runner can be improved by managing weight distribution. Overall, I would give the 4Runner a solid B+ at towing the 20X.

      I have a 4Runner and am looking to get the basecamp 20x from what I'm reading the 20x hitch weight is out of spec for the 4Runner. Could you tell me what you guys did exactly to compensate for that please ?

    You can’t use an airstream’s microwave while dry camping, at least say why. 1000w inverter and only 2 batteries are why. Can’t run the heater all night either unless you either upgrade, have a generator, or en electrical connection.

    • @brockjohnson3575
      @brockjohnson3575 2 года назад +1

      Yes, the microwave needs shore power to operate because the stock batteries aren’t capable of running it, we aren’t tying to be deceitful at all. We have already upgraded our system to include 4 lithium batteries and can easily run the heater all night if needed!

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor 2 года назад

      @@brockjohnson3575 - So you “upgraded” as mentioned, good for you! However, and I apologize if you take this as anything but a friendly correction, two normal batteries will power it, but boiling water or making a TV dinner will deplete them. As you have 4 lithium, your batteries aren’t the issue, you absolutely have enough battery power. The issue is the 1000 watt inverter they supply, you will trip it’s breakers or damage it if you run the microwave and literally anything else. I had a 23FB and had the same issues. 👍🏽❤️
