15:55 Good point. This was evident when I liked WCW vs nWo & WCW/nWo Revenge. While I had watched WCW in 96 it was mainly the games that roped me in to watching their product in 1997 because of the relatability with the wrestlers on tv that I had used in the games.
I'm actually looking forward to playing the first turtles NES game and beating it this time. I watched game play videos on beating the difficulty. There is building in third level map after beating the dam where you can farm the scrolls. It will give you that extra advantage. Also having the rewind feature is going to help big time.
I never knew that there are 2 other version of Tournament Fighters until only a couple of years ago, I'm so hyped to try the out alongside the classics I know and love!

@@HeyItsRidi The NES version of TMNT Tournament Fighters alongside games like Mega Man 6, Battletoads/Double Dragon, Kirby's Adventure, and Mighty Final Fight are some of the later great NES games that most people often missed due to them being released at the time when the Super NES and Sega Genesis were hot on the market.
I'm starting to think that maybe I am the only pro at the original game lol.... Don't get me wrong, I never peed it.... But I could get to the Technadrome... And the water level was a breeze for me.

9:53 I know it has it's issues, but seeing your gameplay footage kind of explains your dislike for it. Running head on into enemies with Leonardo slashing away constantly is not a very effective method.
Let's call a spade a spade though - turtles in time for the snes is the pinnacle of both side scrolling beat em ups and turtles games alike and is leagues above the rest. Absolute masterpiece.

The NESOG turtles game is pure nostalgia for me. It’s also a test for modern younger players, the game fans. I love souls games, but this is the game. I tell people that don’t know about difficulty to sit down and try to beat. I’ve done it twice. It’s incredibly difficult and unforgiving and I love it lol.

I'm glad the turtles are getting more time in the spotlight.. definitely my favorite cartoon , toys and video games from my childhood.. with the release of shredders revenge and this release we got the best collection of retro games ever created in my opinion and I had to throw shredders revenge in because it obviously uses the old catalog as inspiration and has to be seen as a spiritual successor in the series.. sad they couldn't add the turtles in time re-shelled Remake from the xbox 360 to really give every version possible but it's really hard to complain with the content provided this year.. Hopefully the castlevania collections and the turtle collections will spark a ! Over the head of some vp or ceo at Konami to give us a definitive Metal Gear collection Bigger than the xbox 360 and ps3 versions

In a single year: It’s the 35th Anniversary of the 80s cartoon, It’s the 10th Anniversary of the 2012 series, We got the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie on Netflix, We got a brand new game, Shredders Revenge, And we have this amazing compilation of 13 classic games! Hope the rest of you TMNT fans have been enjoying this perfect time to celebrate the franchise!
TMNT NES is a good game. AVGN is great but not meant to be taken as a serious critique. Seems like a whole generation was influenced by that episode into pushing the narrative that the game is bad.

It’s challenging to be sure but not insanely hard. For example the dam level is NOWHERE near as bad as I had heard about it being. Now the Technodrome OTOH. That all said I do agree with James that there could be more characters from show in it and that one jump IS a bit irritating. The ending is also kind of weird. Other than that the game was actually more fun than I thought it would be.

turtles in time arcade is better than snes. fight me. also radical rescue was among the first games i ever played, and my introduction to the turtles its good to see people discovering it for the first time. also the password for radical rescues endgame is insanely easy to remember. which, it has to be considering how absolute bullshit the final gauntlet is. id reccommend turning around and finding an extra life pizza before even attempting it. and if you use it at any point other then the second shredder stage, reset cuz you're done. 1HHHHH2
TMNT II for the NES is a fantastic game - brilliant soundtrack, amazing graphics and new and extended levels. I never liked the third one on the NES - it looks simplified, although it's still a decent game.
Same, and its not only nostalgia. I have played both iterations of 2 and then 3 and I strongly feel 2 on nes is most fleshed out and has the best ost par none.
While I enjoyed watching the review, The constant bashing on the NES TMNT was kind of frustrating. I actually like that game. I always found it fun to explore, and the music was great. Funnily enough the person who wrote the NES TMNT episode for James Rolf doesn't even think it's a bad game. He actually really likes it. He just poked fun at it for the views/entertainment when writing the episode. It's okay if you didn't like it, that's fine, but using the Angry Video Game Nerd to mock it in a review as to why it's so bad feels kind of silly. In the end I'm going to be getting the collection I'm the most excited for the SNES version of Tournament Fighters. I actually do think it was better than Street Fighter at least the SNES versions at the time of it's release. Functional footsies, anti-airs, fun special moves...and it didn't have the slow down SF2 had when throwing fireballs. All while having beautiful sprite work for the time. It even had some future proof functions that even most current fighters lack. Being able to change your buttons in the versus screen is pretty huge in competitive scenes. Funnily enough Tournament Fighters still gets played in side tournaments at Evo. Obviously not the Genesis or NES versions as they are generally critically panned games.
@@HeyItsRidi It's cool that you didn't like it. It's friggin hard if you don't know the strats to beat it/cheese it. Like the underwater level for instance is infamous for being kind of difficult. It's probably one of the more annoying sections. But like...it's actually really easy because right after it you'll just refill all your turtles hp. And between 4 turtles you'll have more than enough life to practically just breeze through it. It's a low point but other than that? The controls are pretty good, combat is fine, it's got interesting exploration and good music for it's time period. At least to me. I think my critique is more...I'd like to know the persons reasons for not liking it other than memeing with AVGN. For a lot of people who grew up playing the TMNT games on the NES, this was there go too, as it had a bit more entertainment value than slogging through the NES version of the Arcade game. Due to more variety in the gameplay.
There is a Displaced Gamers episode that breaks down the game's assembly code to show us just how it could have been engineered into a better experience, if only marginally.

The option to get rid of slow down and flicker is huge for me, the SNES not having online is a terrible mis-step though & very sad. 4 player couch co-op & multiplayer online should have been a standard.
The collection is almost perfect, but the online play is about the worst I've ever seen on the Switch. The lag and the audio bug you mentioned plague what should be an experience equal to Shredder's Revenge. And that main title BGM is beyond annoying! Hoping for fast patches to fix this massively flawed masterpiece.
TMNT II on the NES is NOT the same game as the Arcade version. It has all new stages like the snow stage and ninja dojo and unique bosses not in the Arcade version. And besides that the game play is slightly different. Telling people to skip TMNT II on NES is absurd. It was one of the best games on the NES.
Now we can just walk over it on next-gen consoles! Edit: I played the game, and the NES game's strategy guide talks about walking over the gap! Could it be?
It's a shame this collection doesn't have a streaming service so we can relieve watching the classic Turtles episodes. Even worst, the classic version of the opening song from the show is know where to be found been replaced by a cover version. Must be licensing issues or something. Either way, it is a missed opportunity and you can blame on Nickelodeon on this.
"The Original TMNT theme for the original Arcade game has been replaced" This is a HUGE negative for me, unfortunately, and ill probably just stick to MAME to play the original Arcade game. If you're going to do a collection of past games, why fix what isnt broken?
I was disappointed I couldn't read the comics too, but then I stopped and thought about it, and realized "If they had ALL the comics in this collection, along with all the games, and only sold it for $50, Peter Laird would have a stroke". XD
The one I wanted to play most was turtles in Time, it was the one I spent the most time with as a kid. Just seeing that box art gives me the chills. I remember all the songs as well. And normally I'm not good at remembering games from that long ago. But I'll admit, I don't know what I was expecting but I was kind of disappointed with half of the games being game boy or tournament fighters. I thought they were going to have some of the HD remakes or upgrades on there as well maybe something a little more new in the catalog with it. A lot of those games are terrible, you're basically getting it for the four games on it that are any good. I'll admit I haven't played much tournament fighter but I'm not too excited. I think I'll go trade it into my game store for "gun "on the Gam eCube

No history of the tmnt video games in the collection but the guide with videos and manuals,box art is a really good bonus just like the castlevania advance collection.
I love this game i played most of these when i was a kid so it was a beautiful dose of nostalgia....BUT!!!!! theres an achilles heel for the Nintendo switch, and thats that you cannot use 1 joycon per player....like at all for any of the games. I really wanted to play this with my wife she has a switch and i have the lite. So i was very dissapointed we couldnt use the joycons for 2 players anf its infuriating when it totally could be as the games only require 4 buttons for attacks and jumps and a joystick for movement.
I’m a huge fan of T.M.N.T. too as a kid. But I stopped watching after your 2 negative comments on the first minute of my most favorite T.M.N.T. (NES) game of them all.
The first NES Turtles game isn't cursed, it is amazing. I beat that game a week after I first got it. The underwater level is a cake walk compared to the levels that follow it.
The thing you said about Tournament Fighters being the same game is really innacurate. It had different characters, music, visuals and stages and even the characters that appeared in all versions have different moves.

I agree there should be a way to limit lives for the arcade games. It just feels silly to have infinite lives because it ruins the difficulty and makes you kind of not care about getting hit.
Frankly I don’t find it to be a huge bummer since you can just set the amount of credits and just use personal restraint on giving yourself more while playing.

Why is it using the 2003 music but not including the 2003 games?
They can’t use the 1987 theme from the TV series due to copyright laws.
9:53 I know it has it's issues, but seeing your gameplay footage kind of explains your dislike for it. Running head on into enemies with Leonardo slashing away constantly is not a very effective method.
Let's call a spade a spade though - turtles in time for the snes is the pinnacle of both side scrolling beat em ups and turtles games alike and is leagues above the rest. Absolute masterpiece.

Personally I think the best game in this collection is Tmnt for the Nes... mainly due to nostalgia. 🙂
The NESOG turtles game is pure nostalgia for me. It’s also a test for modern younger players, the game fans. I love souls games, but this is the game. I tell people that don’t know about difficulty to sit down and try to beat. I’ve done it twice. It’s incredibly difficult and unforgiving and I love it lol.

I know the NES game is difficult but there is still so much to like about it. It's a really different approach and still has great music.
I really hoped by now that it’s reputation would improve as people would actually bother to play the game without thinking about what the AVGN said. It’s CLEARLY just comedy.
I love that one of the most notoriously bullshit games from the NES got a rerelease. It just goes to show that you can never truly call a game from a bygone era dead.

i dislike how everyone plays it expecting modern handling and modern mechanics. It has it's own mechanics and it's own way of playing it. You can totally see on this video how the person playing is just trying to bulldoze thru everything.

I'm glad the turtles are getting more time in the spotlight.. definitely my favorite cartoon , toys and video games from my childhood.. with the release of shredders revenge and this release we got the best collection of retro games ever created in my opinion and I had to throw shredders revenge in because it obviously uses the old catalog as inspiration and has to be seen as a spiritual successor in the series.. sad they couldn't add the turtles in time re-shelled Remake from the xbox 360 to really give every version possible but it's really hard to complain with the content provided this year.. Hopefully the castlevania collections and the turtle collections will spark a ! Over the head of some vp or ceo at Konami to give us a definitive Metal Gear collection Bigger than the xbox 360 and ps3 versions

TMNT NES is a good game. AVGN is great but not meant to be taken as a serious critique. Seems like a whole generation was influenced by that episode into pushing the narrative that the game is bad.
Yeah it's kind of sad really. Even the writer of that episode said that it was actually a really good game. And the episode was meant for entertainment value. Deff not meant for a serious critique.

It’s challenging to be sure but not insanely hard. For example the dam level is NOWHERE near as bad as I had heard about it being. Now the Technodrome OTOH. That all said I do agree with James that there could be more characters from show in it and that one jump IS a bit irritating. The ending is also kind of weird. Other than that the game was actually more fun than I thought it would be.
I think the general consensus of not having online for SNES Turtles in Time is absolutely correct.
@4:46 when I saw the list of whats online I was more DAMN on why not TMNT 3! Made more sense there as its an original title were the snes is similar to arcade., However, yea sucks even the snes turtles in time isnt online either.
I feel your pain on Turtles in Time SNES not having online, I’m kinda hoping they patch that in on a later date since even Manhattan Project should have it too.

also radical rescue was among the first games i ever played, and my introduction to the turtles
its good to see people discovering it for the first time.
also the password for radical rescues endgame is insanely easy to remember. which, it has to be considering how absolute bullshit the final gauntlet is. id reccommend turning around and finding an extra life pizza before even attempting it. and if you use it at any point other then the second shredder stage, reset cuz you're done.

TMNT II for the NES is a fantastic game - brilliant soundtrack, amazing graphics and new and extended levels. I never liked the third one on the NES - it looks simplified, although it's still a decent game.
Same, and its not only nostalgia. I have played both iterations of 2 and then 3 and I strongly feel 2 on nes is most fleshed out and has the best ost par none.

While I enjoyed watching the review, The constant bashing on the NES TMNT was kind of frustrating. I actually like that game. I always found it fun to explore, and the music was great. Funnily enough the person who wrote the NES TMNT episode for James Rolf doesn't even think it's a bad game. He actually really likes it. He just poked fun at it for the views/entertainment when writing the episode. It's okay if you didn't like it, that's fine, but using the Angry Video Game Nerd to mock it in a review as to why it's so bad feels kind of silly.
In the end I'm going to be getting the collection I'm the most excited for the SNES version of Tournament Fighters. I actually do think it was better than Street Fighter at least the SNES versions at the time of it's release. Functional footsies, anti-airs, fun special moves...and it didn't have the slow down SF2 had when throwing fireballs. All while having beautiful sprite work for the time. It even had some future proof functions that even most current fighters lack. Being able to change your buttons in the versus screen is pretty huge in competitive scenes. Funnily enough Tournament Fighters still gets played in side tournaments at Evo. Obviously not the Genesis or NES versions as they are generally critically panned games.

Like the underwater level for instance is infamous for being kind of difficult. It's probably one of the more annoying sections. But like...it's actually really easy because right after it you'll just refill all your turtles hp. And between 4 turtles you'll have more than enough life to practically just breeze through it. It's a low point but other than that? The controls are pretty good, combat is fine, it's got interesting exploration and good music for it's time period. At least to me.
I think my critique is more...I'd like to know the persons reasons for not liking it other than memeing with AVGN. For a lot of people who grew up playing the TMNT games on the NES, this was there go too, as it had a bit more entertainment value than slogging through the NES version of the Arcade game. Due to more variety in the gameplay.
There is a Displaced Gamers episode that breaks down the game's assembly code to show us just how it could have been engineered into a better experience, if only marginally.

I couldn't find the cheat menu or how to activate it it online. How do you get it??
The option to get rid of slow down and flicker is huge for me, the SNES not having online is a terrible mis-step though & very sad. 4 player couch co-op & multiplayer online should have been a standard.
The collection is almost perfect, but the online play is about the worst I've ever seen on the Switch. The lag and the audio bug you mentioned plague what should be an experience equal to Shredder's Revenge.
And that main title BGM is beyond annoying! Hoping for fast patches to fix this massively flawed masterpiece.

TMNT II on the NES is NOT the same game as the Arcade version. It has all new stages like the snow stage and ninja dojo and unique bosses not in the Arcade version. And besides that the game play is slightly different. Telling people to skip TMNT II on NES is absurd. It was one of the best games on the NES.
Who ever suggests to skip that version, clearly likes to play with his sisters barbies.

It's a shame this collection doesn't have a streaming service so we can relieve watching the classic Turtles episodes. Even worst, the classic version of the opening song from the show is know where to be found been replaced by a cover version. Must be licensing issues or something. Either way, it is a missed opportunity and you can blame on Nickelodeon on this.
Why should they offer the cartoon episodes on top of everything else? If you want to watch them, buy the DVDs online.

I was disappointed I couldn't read the comics too, but then I stopped and thought about it, and realized "If they had ALL the comics in this collection, along with all the games, and only sold it for $50, Peter Laird would have a stroke". XD
The one I wanted to play most was turtles in Time, it was the one I spent the most time with as a kid. Just seeing that box art gives me the chills. I remember all the songs as well. And normally I'm not good at remembering games from that long ago. But I'll admit, I don't know what I was expecting but I was kind of disappointed with half of the games being game boy or tournament fighters. I thought they were going to have some of the HD remakes or upgrades on there as well maybe something a little more new in the catalog with it. A lot of those games are terrible, you're basically getting it for the four games on it that are any good. I'll admit I haven't played much tournament fighter but I'm not too excited. I think I'll go trade it into my game store for "gun "on the Gam eCube

I LOVED Radical Rescue as a kid. Can't remember if I ever defeated Shredder, so I'll have to rectify that.
So Turtles did a Metroidvania before Castlevania ever did it. Maybe the genre should have been called Turteloid? No? Oh well.
Yeah but TMNT didn't always stick to it. When Castlevania did it, they ran with it and gave us more for GBA and Nintendo DS.

I love this game i played most of these when i was a kid so it was a beautiful dose of nostalgia....BUT!!!!! theres an achilles heel for the Nintendo switch, and thats that you cannot use 1 joycon per player....like at all for any of the games. I really wanted to play this with my wife she has a switch and i have the lite. So i was very dissapointed we couldnt use the joycons for 2 players anf its infuriating when it totally could be as the games only require 4 buttons for attacks and jumps and a joystick for movement.
I’m a huge fan of T.M.N.T. too as a kid. But I stopped watching after your 2 negative comments on the first minute of my most favorite T.M.N.T. (NES) game of them all.
The first NES Turtles game isn't cursed, it is amazing. I beat that game a week after I first got it. The underwater level is a cake walk compared to the levels that follow it.
Can you stretch to fill the screen or you have to have borders on the side?

The thing you said about Tournament Fighters being the same game is really innacurate. It had different characters, music, visuals and stages and even the characters that appeared in all versions have different moves.

I agree there should be a way to limit lives for the arcade games. It just feels silly to have infinite lives because it ruins the difficulty and makes you kind of not care about getting hit.

Frankly I don’t find it to be a huge bummer since you can just set the amount of credits and just use personal restraint on giving yourself more while playing.
