CLIP from 1/25/2009 Episode of ANIMAL PLANET'S "Untamed and Uncut:"
On April 3, 2007, Umbrella Cockatoo, Geronimo, escaped from his cage in Porter, Texas in Montgomery County. He flew out of the window and wound up in a tree some 70 feet high up in the air. His owner (a roofer by trade) climbed after him to get him but could not get back down. After some 5 hours, the U.S. Coast Guard managed to rescue both Geronimo and his dedicated owner via helicopter! A happy ending...
and Geronimo got his wings clipped and
now wears a Harness when he goes outside!

I just want to praise your dad so much for this brave act! I personally own an Umbrella Cockatoo, Lesser Sulfur Crested Cockatoo, and Blue and Gold Macaw, and all of them are like me and my fiance's children, as well. It's so nice to see other bird owners and people that would to anything to protect what others may see as 'just a bird'. To people like us, they're so much more, and some people will just never understand that...
    Praise your father!

I always keep my umbrella cockatoo's wings clipped...not to avoid escape, but because the bird hates my husband! Has flown across the room to bite him, screaming "I'll GET you!!!" LOLOL

I'm amazed Geronimo didn't fly away. He was probably frightened and just wanted to be with his owner again...

when i evacuated from katrina, i was stuck on some cow farm in the middle of nowhere and the same thing happened to me and my bird, scout, except i wasn't able to climb the tree so i was on the roof. the fire dept wouldn't come. eventually, i got up on a ladder and we made a huge"pole" and tied his perch to the end of it. he finally made it to the perch and into my arms.

I have a sun conure and only clip 5 of the 10 flight feathers. He can still fly in a controlled manner, but is unable to gain more than 5 feet in altitude.

I think I know what does he feel when he want to rescue his cockatoo.... T_T I ever once had a dove and it rain away, but luckily, it came back to the cage... after that, my dove was clipped

And that's why I stick with dogs and a handful of cats that don't like climbing.

@wildlifeguardian Exactly right. Even professionals have to teach their birds for some time how to fly back down, it's much harder then up! This is why pet birds should have their wings clipped, or they should be CAREFULLY watched when windows are open! Thank goodness this bird was lucky enough to have an owner who cared enough to risk his life to save him, and a cost gaurd to help him out when he couldn't do it alone!

Wild birds and animals are NOT pets. When people can learn to appreciate this fact, this sort of accidental loss of pets would not happen.

Birds have to LEARN how to fly -- pet birds never learn that in the average home and only know how to climb. Plus their DNA tells them that only "UP" is safe...not down...so this parrot was stuck up there and needed help...

but i still did not clip his wings. accidents happen and you deal with it- you don't disable a bird for convenience and peace of mind. you just have to be more careful. i would die for my birds, but i will never clip them.
