"I've had my TV mended. Well I say mended. A shifty looking youth in plimsolls came and waggled me aerial and wolfed me Gypsy Creams but that's the comprehensive system for you". Genius 😂😂😂
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face...
It is difficult to know what makes Kitty so sublime. I saw these monologues on As Seen on TV when in first went out and I feel that I have been quoting them ever since. She is just so completely herself, and the writing walks a tightrope between the totally mundane and the totally surreal. We feel that we know this person, she explodes with a sort of bonkers life force, and she in unfazed by anything. Something great about the very maddest things coming in parentheses. Never hospitalised, except when concussed by an electric potato peeler at the Ideal Home Exhibition? Victoria Wood's comic writing defies analysis. Every word is just somehow the very funniest it could be and the speed of Patricia Routledge's delivery just makes image follow image, absurdity follow absurdity in a way that is completely magical. Unsurpassed.
I totally agree. And because she is such a good comedy actor I couldn't watch her as Mrs Bucket. She reminded me all too convincingly of some dreadful battle-axes that ruined my life when young. But had Victoria Wood written a series with Kitty as the main character it would now be seen as comedy gold surpassing possibly "Dinner Ladies"
Nobody could write‘skits’ as well as Victoria Wood. They were absolute gems when delivered by Phenomenal actress’s such as Patricia Routledge & Julie Walters.
I agree. They need a very particular acting style. No hamming up. No knowingness in the delivery. The mad lines have to be delivered absolutely straight.
We can probably thank Victoria Wood for Patricia landing the role of Hyacinth in KUA. Pretty sure I read somewhere that it was Patricia's performance as Kitty which got her noticed by the guy who did the casting.
Who can ever forget Kitty, Dame Patricia Routledge is just brilliant and has a great flair for comedy along with her other versatile performances, both Miss Victoria Wood's writing and Dame Patricia Routledge as Kitty just blended SUPER. bravo Kim P.
Pair a great comedy actress with a perfect script and you get, magic! Once this was done, it was impossible to imagine anyone but Patricia Routledge as Kitty and it was certain that no-one could have written anything so sublime except Victoria Wood. Sadly missed.
There will never be anyone like Kitty ever again. She is one person I would have love to meet in life. I have been hooked on UK comedies for years. Once I saw Onslo wearing a Green Bay Packer's (my home team) jersey on "Keeping Up Appearences". What a hoot!
Today I celebrate one of the world's most gifted, bright and beautiful comedic minds, Ms. Victoria Wood. Thank you for the brilliance, laughs and classic one-liners and turns of phrase. The joy you've shared on humanity is everlasting. Godspeed, dear Lady.
Brilliantly funny... Patricia Routledge is fantastic... She is awesome in anything she acts in... Fabulous and so witty too... Victoria Wood's writing screams class and talent... And she picked the right lady tp perform it... Bravo... bravo ;0)x
Predates Talking Head, but postdates A Woman of No Importance by a couple of years, and various other similar Alan Bennett bits and pieces by even longer. But the strong female (or "female") character performing comic / bittersweet /.farcical monologue is a staple of Northern humour going back a long way before either Bennett or Wood, though they were the masters of it through the 80s and 90s.
Thanks for posting this Kitty sketch. Patricia Routledge is an amazing character actress. My favorite, though, will forever and always be Hyacinth from "Keeping Up Appearances" -- absolutely brilliant comedic acting in what is easily one of the funniest sitcoms of all time!
Absolute gem - this woman is THE BEST at doing monologues - her best performance was "A Lady Of Letters" - long live Ms. Routledge - and of course, Mr. Alan Bennett! :) Neil.
Pretty much every Talking Heads was brilliant. He chose his subjects well. The Thora Hird one was genius, as was his own Chip In The Sugar episode! Well recalled and posted :-)
Wraning: Do not attempt to drink tea or anything else while watching this. The combination of fluids and laughter may cause choking. (as I have learned)
Patricia,Susie,Duncan,Celia et al must've kissed VW's feet to be offered such wonderful characters.Yes,they're all fine actors in their own right, but the absolute joy of being able to appear in Britain's finest comedienne's tv shows would have to have been just amazing! Susie with her continuity announcer,Patricia as Kitty,Celia & Duncan in Acorn Antiques, simply superb.Oh,& naturally,JW,let's not forget her input, lol.A Damehood for VW,please!
What?!! I hadn't read or heard that. Last time I looked at Wikipedia she was still living and was about 80, maybe not as active as she was a few years ago.
Yes - that seems to be the one Kitty monologue that is missing from here, so I hope that someone will post it some day. She drinks so much sherry that eventually, she just keeps the bottle !!! It is absolutely hilarious. We have seen Patricia Routledge on stage in London in "Talking Heads" doing two monologues, and she is brilliant - an absolutely superb actress and a master of comedy timing.
Victoria Wood wrote and Patricia Routledge delivered. A paring made in heaven.
"I've had my TV mended. Well I say mended. A shifty looking youth in plimsolls came and waggled me aerial and wolfed me Gypsy Creams but that's the comprehensive system for you". Genius 😂😂😂
And in one unfaltering breath.
That is a whole play there. In two sentences. Every word considered, every word funny, every word adding to what we know about the character. Genius!
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face
Absolute queen of monologue ❤😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
One of the greatest comedy actresses of all time.
yes , she is , may God protect her and bless her.
@Luigi 80 Excellent dramatic actress as well. Hetty Winthrop was my favourite character.
@@gilgameshofuruk4060 yes definitely not just comedy. Also her singing too, multitalented.
Patricia Routledge is a legend. Comic Genius and amazing actress.
She is a national treasure. Perfect comic timing and great writing
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face...
I was concussed by an electric potato peeler at the Ideal Home exhibition 🤣🤣🤣

Perfectly put.

Constantly quoting from Kitty and indeed Victoria Wood sketches after almost 40 years 😱
"I'm poked in the street by complete acquaintances"... Priceless!
I lost it at that 😂
When you get top notch writing and brilliant performers…perfect humour
I love her . She must be one of the best actresses in comedy ever . No one like her

2:21 the amazing breath control of the fine singer that she also is.
hahaha The Wonderful beginings of the future Mrs Bucket :-)
Her northern accent is stronger here than in the Keeping Up Appearances. She plays arrogant, sarcastic personalities so well.
Even when you don't quite get all the British references, you're still laughing at her impeccable delivery. She's a marvel!
Who can ever forget Kitty, Dame Patricia Routledge is just brilliant and has a
great flair for comedy along with her other versatile performances, both Miss
Victoria Wood's writing and Dame Patricia Routledge as Kitty just blended

Absolute genius!! Brilliant. The writing and delivery is perfect.

Goodnight, Victoria.
So beautifully expressed.
Indeed, though that is only half the brilliance... delivery is everything and Ms. Routledge is an absolute master at delivery!
Wonderful woman, wonderful actress! ❤
She's alive and kicking. Wonderful woman....God bless her :-)
Sublime writing, sublime performance. Bask in the glory of it :)
this is the funniest comedy character EVER !!!!!!
It says a lot about Victoria Woods writing too that these sketches are as good as they are
KITTY RULES!!! havent seen this in ages...thats me for you three bangles and a polo neck thankyou!
Brilliantly funny... Patricia Routledge is fantastic... She is awesome in anything she acts in... Fabulous and so witty too... Victoria Wood's writing screams class and talent... And she picked the right lady tp perform it... Bravo... bravo ;0)x
"My father's mother ran her own abattoir" is one of my favourite comic lines of all - it's so unexpected.
Both writing and delivery-genius!
I love this type of comedy the writing the actress why don't we see this type anymore
Agreed, but how I wish Victoria Wood had written a special episode
IT’S THE BUCKET WOMAN!!!! 🤣🤣
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face
She was perfectly cast as Hyacinth - time flies shes an old lady now.
Fantastic! Still so funny and the delivery is faultless. A classic.
Absolute gem - this woman is THE BEST at doing monologues - her best performance was "A Lady Of Letters" - long live Ms. Routledge - and of course, Mr. Alan Bennett!
:)
Neil.
Chewbaxter Victoria Wood wrote this
Wouldn't you love to see Kitty encounter, Hyacinth!?!?!?!
'Kitty' (and, indeed, Pat Routledge) - timeless!
Did wonderful performances of Alan Bennett plays.Talking Heads.
Pretty much every Talking Heads was brilliant. He chose his subjects well. The Thora Hird one was genius, as was his own Chip In The Sugar episode! Well recalled and posted :-)
Patricia Routledge is a very good actress
I LOVE her. SO funny...and she reminds me of a friends mother, here in the states.
Xenia Ohio
Waggled my Ariel and wolfed my gypsy creams
But thats the Comprehensive system for you 😃
Dame Edna and Kitty must get together and have tea. It would be phenomenal!!!!
@FeelGood30 Gypsy Creams are round biscuits sandwiched with a vanilla butter icing. Like Oreos, just a different flavour.
Absolutely brilliant!
Patricia has always been a wonderful actress.
Always loved the 'Kitty' monologues - excellent stuff!
:)
Neil.
My all time favourite comedian absolutely fantastic
this is fantastic
Can't imagine Mrs Bouquet bucket would find this amusing 😂😂
I know what you mean
My maisonette back onto a cake factory, so I'm dusting my nick nacks all day long!
I used the Mashed Swede quote often when people ask how old I am.
One of the greatest
“I speak as I find”
I love Kitty
Love Kitty !!
Kitty reminds me of my gran, sort of a cross between Kitty and Joanie Taylor. God rest her.
shes amazing actress comedian hiliarious i luv her in keeping up apperances
OMG i love her
Just brilliant
Thank you!
@WELLBRAN He wrote some of her material but "Kitty" is written by Victoria Wood. Just wonderful!
Wraning: Do not attempt to drink tea or anything else while watching this. The combination of fluids and laughter may cause choking.
(as I have learned)
Dame Patricia Routledge anyone?
Today..... finally :)
Love this storytime way of funny.
Especially by Ms Routledge.
I don’t know every reference, but no matter.
@neilrwilkinson One of the best one-liners ever!
splendida attrice
Complete avoidance of midget gems....oh how I agree with her on that one 😁.
BRILLIANT
Why hasn't Patricia Routledge been made a Dame Commander by now? She certainly deserves it!!
James Vaughan she is now
I've always thought Kitty was basically the premise for creating Hyacinth Bucket.
I'm having tea with the boys in flat five.
(Is one of them Sheridan by any chance ?)
She’s on another level
Yes, it's Patricia Routledge. "Keeping Up Appearances" ran from 1990 to 1995, but has been repeated a lot, so that's why it probably seems so recent.
brilliant

She is alive and well :-)
So very Victoria Wood wording, but by god this is wonderfull, well written and damn funny!
shows Victoria wood was really behind the wonderful hyacinth (the idea at least)
Yes, indeed. I said it very early on and Roy Clarke finally 'admitted' from where the idea came :p
Yes peppery like Victoria Wood
Kitty ftw :D
🇬🇧👍 R.I.P. 👍🇬🇧
GREAT, ACTRESS
WE ENJOYED YOUR
TALENT. YOUR
IMAGINERY MIMICS
TALENTED AS A
GREAT ACTING. 🥰👏
Patricia Routledge is still alive! She is 92.
genius!
I met a new person named Kitty at work today- this was my first thought...
great
Gawd she reminds me of my nan so much :P
= National Treasure
that's why it's so funny
Wow! Hyacinth Bucket precursor. I've never seen this.
Aside from Tom Stoppard and Alan Bennett, is there a better writer than Victoria Wood today?
Answer: No!
Way before "Keeping up apperances" she was a comedian star.
and used to sing in operas, too!
What?!! I hadn't read or heard that. Last time I looked at Wikipedia she was still living and was about 80, maybe not as active as she was a few years ago.
I think this predates Bennett's Talking Heads by a couple of years.
but thats the comprehensive system for you. victoria wood went to bury grammar school.
She So Cool I Love In To Sir With Love.
Now that's the real Talking Heads.
Utterly priceless and waaayyyy better than the Bucket Woman!!
Yes - that seems to be the one Kitty monologue that is missing from here, so I hope that someone will post it some day. She drinks so much sherry that eventually, she just keeps the bottle !!! It is absolutely hilarious.
