- For those of you that like for me to make a long story short...
You can't wear your personal boots at BCT but you MIGHT be able to wear your personal shoes at BCT.

I just got back from basic on leave. Here's the easy answer.. No boots other than what they give you(The drill sergeants hate individuals). Running shoe's are different, if its black its okay but lots of drill sergeants won't let you wear personal shoes until mid white or blue phase.
Spree Gaming our drill sergeants didn’t let us get diff running shoes, and we had “screaming eagles” until the last haircut before family day lol. We weren’t even allowed watches haha
Javier Hernandez if the drill sergeants say so. Ours were not allowed. Even the ones sold at the PX was a no
Spree Gaming What boots do they issue you? McRae?
if u want to use insoles have your family or friends send it to u in a package AFTER u make sure they will let u use them
I have a pair of bellville 390's that I use as running shoes for the past 18 months can i count those as running shoes since thats what i run in or will they still say no?
One little trick: when you know you're going to do a ruck march, first put on a pair of dress (class A) socks, then your regular socks above them. The dress socks reduce friction on your feet, thus helping to prevent blisters.
I wish I knew this trick. Would've saved my feet.😂
Wait you serious
@@dakotabice558 Yes, I am.
kirkwb In that case thank you VERY much for the pain your helping me avoid once I’m at basic
@@dakotabice558 Glad to help - where are you going to basic at and when?
I giggled when he said the heavy boots were like 2 lbs and the light ones were a pound 16oz
Bro same i was looking for someone to say it in the comments
My advice, get a pair of Altimas from your local Army/Navy store and wear them for a month or more prior to BCT. Your feet will thank you during that land nav ruck.
Eleven Bravo well I wore some Nike md1 walking 6 miles and that helped
That’s what I do.
I just dropped 200 bucks on a great pair of boots, now I’m regretting it cause those Nike boots look sweet
Why not buy a pair of clunky steel toed walmart boots and run in them every day before basic training, that way those other shoes will feel like felt slippers
Cody Mallett my brother wears steal toed boots but his feet are fine
Cody Mallett I’m 17 and I’ve been wearing steel toed boots for 2 years now. I plan on wearing them until I actually join. I don’t get blisters or anything and I think you’re absolutely right. I don’t think I’ll have a problem with the boots they issue me lol
@@matt.undisclosed you will.. watch out for the achilles blister
@@jessesjourney5973 do you have access to athletic tape at Basic or anything to prevent blisters? Or do you have to get bloody holes in your feet before they give it to you. I already have a problem with blisters in decent boots so prevention would be ideal...
@@christopherrowley7506 i went through navy bootcamp and got injured and went home. In navy bootcamp you dont have access to wraps to help your blister
Trashed my issued boots as soon as we're allowed to. Rocky, Belleville and Garmont saved my sanity.
Never throw away your issue. They're part of your TA-50 and you'll get a statement of charges if you are missing them.
TheBman24 my TA-50 had only the gear I used for OSUT and would be used on the next cycle. Boots, OCP, cold gear, WW jacket, etc..., my platoon was allowed to replace everything we wanted.
Interesting. I had an infantry DS at basic who threw away his black boots after they switched to tan, then they had him pay for the black boots.
TheBman24 I know what you mean. One of my DS talked about it. I gues every BCT experience is different. I noticed a lot of things on my OSUT went by DS/ 1st sgt leeways.
Belleville boots are amazing
I think I mentioned this before...I went to Basic in June 1982 and I am always amazed at the differences (and similarities.) A big difference was the gear. We were issued 2 pairs of the old black leather combat boots. we were supposed to rotate the, and some training companies had to put a white marl on the inside, and the DIs would check to make sure they had the right pair on during inspections. our DIs were a little more relaxed, and allowed us to polish one and keep it for locker inspections, and the other for training (we still had to polish them, but they were more broken in.) We also ran PT in our boots and BDU trousers. We were taken to the PX and bought running shoes, but those went into our lockers for inspection. That was the first pair of Nikes I ever owned. $20.00 at the Fort Benning PX.
Air Force & Space Force- Yes you can buy a pair of running shoes and use your personal pair. For personal boots it depends on your training squadron but you’ll likely be able to wear your own pair of boots, though for some TRS you may need to get a waiver in order to wear a personal pair. It will also depend on your job, as for some you’ll be forced to wear steel toed boots anyway.
The nike SFBs are pretty badass. I think this new tennis shoe style boot is the future of bootwear. It seems like every boot company is making this style of boot now. Good video!
Ship out Nov 13 2018. A week from today, I was a quick ship. Thank you for your videos
Austin Ranquist how is it going man?
@@sarge3276 Nah he ded
Tactical WarHead I’m crying
i went through infantry OSUT about 2 months ago and I remember in mid white phase (I'd say it was probably week 5 or 6) our company had a vendor come in and sell boots. the selection was limited but the boots they had were much better than the standard issued ones and they even sold things to take care of our feet and boots(better boot socks, deodorizer, insoles etc.). I bought a pair of Belleville TR550 for $140 and they were really comfortable especially for ruck marching. as for PT shoes we didn't get to use personal shoes at all for basic but once we got past the forge our DS's would let us order shoes and get them when we got mail call and at week 13 we got to go through our personal bags and get our pt shoes if we brought them(which I did).
16oz = 1lb
In the British Army i use altburgs and they are probably the best pair of boots I’ve worn
What about Haix boots?
1lbs 16oz is 2lbs... I mean I could be wrong.
i heard that too lol
I mean like its 1lb which is 16oz lol
Matt Ward you forgot the word “or” lol ya know it’s just a little important, not much through. Lol
sorry but if you were unable to follow along with his train of thought..." half the weight....2lb vs 1lb/16oz" then I'm not sure theres much anyone can do for you
keatinja50 oh sweety take the sarcasm. it was a funny. I know what he meant.
1 pound and 16 ozs against 2 pounds huh thats interesting
my drill sergeant taught us a cool trick to break in the shitty issued boots. we put them on loose, soak them in the shower, then lace them up snug and tight (not uncomfortable), then wear them around. they broke in quickly. also make sure to break in BOTH boots at bct. also use foot powder and if you’re able to, try to buy fox river socks at the px if you can. depends on ur unit. i just finished up at fort sill a few weeks ago. we rucked all the time. then go out and buy garmont t8 boots and thank me later.
also, the new PT shoes they issue are god awful. try to get the new balances if you can, but avoid the eagle mountains at all cost
I was just about to ask this question! Thanks Matt, you're the best 👏👌
:))
Im 26 enlisting in the Army Full time service in October, of 2022 I was always nervous to join but now i feel like I'll regret it if I don't enlist it's been a dream of mine sense i was a kid my weight was always the issue im hitting the gym every day and love it. I'm losing weight very quickly im exited for this journey I'm preparing for my ASVAB too thank thank for your videos
i still have my boots 😂 from b.c.t issued in "97" the guys fitting us back then with boots must have hated me!!! try finding size 7 youth boots 😂😂
lol wowww
Matt Ward tell me about it 😂😂 imagine the torment i got haha. but i was light and quick on my boots 😆
proudly served-flw I was issued size 6.5w (about 3 sizes too small). I told the shoe fitter that it was way too tight. He said it was suppose to be that way and that they would break in. Well after 14 weeks of infantry osut, both of my big toe nails fell off from the pressure
I also had lacerations on the back of my heels, down to the bone, after a day of land nav
rileydawg2013 dam that sucks sorry you went through that. sadly sometimes clothing issue is in a rush, and they dont care.
their kind of like used car salesman, tell you what you wanna hear.
I knew a guy that was in the army back in the late 80s. He ended up getting discharged because his feet couldn't handle the black leather boots they were issued. I like the look of black leather boots they used to have and once broken in they can be comfortable. I couldn't imagine going through basic training with a new pair of the black boots as they can take a month to get broken in. From what I hear they did everything in those boots, running shoes were not used for anything. The tan boots were a big upgrade.
Back when I did Basic in 1981, you got 2 pairs of cheap old-school black combat boots, and you did everything in those boots and you spent 90% of your free time shining them. Those old boots were just leather with a fairly cheap sole, zero arch support, had poor traction in mud or sand and winter boots were you strap on black rubber galoshes, the same ones they used in WWII. A lot of our gear was really poor quality or obsolete back then. Things finally started to change in the mid 80's.
Garmonts are all around great boots, they are very comfortable and very durable. If you plan on going active duty I highly recommend buying a good pair of Garmonts so you're not buying new boots every few months
Sam Stringer I have the Garmont NFS. Super light and comfortable. Not expensive either
I have the T8’s and they are great. I’ve put on about 3-400 miles in those boots the drainage port came off on one but they overall are still great. The Nike break down pretty easily and heard bad things about them.
Garmont and Rocky are my top2. IMO Rocky provides better ankle support and are more durable for the field stuff, while Garmonts are lighter and more comfortable for garrison environment.
Just enlisted today! Fort Jackson, June 19th 👍
Dylan Lauder july 2nd my dude 💪🇺🇸🇺🇸

Say hello to my friend he’s going to the same base with same shipment day
On HBL right now. I think these rules changed. My company commander gave us a list and specifically said to us we are free to buy our own boots during the break and we will be able to wear them when we return although we dont have to buy our own. Probably because some of us got screwed out of winter boots during ya know... Winter 😂
Hey Matt, wanted to say thanks for all the great vids recently, I'm actually going to take my ASVAB today, going for 74d and chem. corps.
Good luck!!!
Thanks man.
SWagiCALwalRUS hope u get a high score
I got a 91! All of my Composite Scores are above 120! Cheers!
SWagiCALwalRUS Holy shit congratulations 🎉 is it Hard? Cause I took the practice and scored a damn 45
Soldiers today got it made because back in my days we wore the old style Black Recruit Combat Boots through Basic Training and AIT. We did PT wearing these including the Two Mile Run. Running Shoes was NOT ALLOWED. At the completion of AIT the majority of us bought the old Corcoran Jump Boots ditching the Recruit Boots.
I just went through basic at FLW my drill sgts were considered to be a little more strict on the boot policy we didn't get to go buy new boots until AIT so the beginning of black phase other companies were sending their trainees to get new boots at like white phase and with the running shoes on the first they they looked at all of the shoes and let you know if you could wear them if they werent all black they said no they eventually didnt care to keep up w what shoes we were wearing for training as long as they were running shoes some people wore platoon colors others straight up bought pink shoes on pass
My liberal friend took his hemp boots with a recycled REI insert and wasn’t able to use them, or even use a Starbucks Cherry refresher, quinoa to prevent his hypoglycemia on warm days. Not to mention his skin conditioner...
Short answer no you will use the boots they give you and the pt shoes they give you unless they let u wear personal shoes after red phase I didn't get to until way after forge
We had to wear either ASICS or New Balance when I went. No personal running shoes. Same with issued boots.
Most people at my AIT wore Oakley's or Garmont's. My favorite AR 670-1 approved boots are the Tactical Research Khyber II's. They were $135 (roughly $15 cheaper than most), yet sturdy and extremely comfortable. I also wore the Danners but wasn't a big fan (soles were too small).
Do you have any tips on sore muscles at basic? I've been doing PT every week with my recruiter but noticing how hard it is for my sore muscles to feel any better is that something common at basic as well?
Victoria Wabol PT more and become use to it. Do harder workouts than what you’ll do at BCT
Foam roll
I got the Rockys SV2 and so far I’m loving them. Gonna start hiking and running in them to prepare my feet a bit. I ship out May 3rd.
I was in the USAF in the early 70’s. We were issued only 3 footwear - combat boots, chuka boots, and dress shoes. Our TI was obsessed with having them all spit shined so we spent all our down time shining them. The combat boots were the preferred footwear for marching and running; and we all got blistered breaking them in. No athletic shoes were allowed. I do have to admit that allowing athletic shoes and the new lightweight boots reduces foot injury and are much more comfortable.
I just got back from Basic, I can't say for every post, but Fort Leonard Wood doesn't care
Short answer, it depends on what your company decides, I knew a lot of people who got to at their company, but I didn’t at mine so it all depends
3 years late, but im planning on doing Army National Guard once i get my GED.
Im a Mens 13 shoe size and I'm not really worried about my feet getting tore up cause i spent first half of my 20 year old life walking barefoot when i didnt need shoes.
Bare feet on rocks, gravel, broken glass, goat heads, Arizona summer asphalt, my feet are so calloused,
(Warning potentially gross imagery to some readers read on at your own risk)
.whenever i shower, dead callous skin sheds off like im gratting cheese lmao, so im none too worried about my feet. Im moreso worried about my cardio, that's one thing i was never good with that ill be working on as i work to prepare myself. Love your vids man they have only made me more excited
When I was a kid I was an army guy for Halloween. I got a pair of used boots and a full uniform from a second hand shop. Turns out they make the exact same pair of jungle boots some 40 years later. Altama boots never go out of style.
Hey Matt, you should do a video on your favorite war films.
Ha, three months out of basic and i still can't feel the bottoms of my big toes.
Few people came back to basic from block leave with new boots and they were allowed to. (This was at Fort Benning)
Someone should show up to parade with hugely-fluffy slippers...... :)
You should save your boot money for buying spare stress cards
Short answer.... Basic - Big Fing Negative. AIT - Yes. As long as they are AR 670-1 compliant. At least it was like that back in 2014.
Also. Everything you will need for the next 10 weeks will be issued and or bought during training. When you ship. Dont bring ANYTHING. except your paperwork, identification and your phone. (Phone will be taken away though later) save your money!!!!
OMGG, what a difference. Our "cheap" boots are from Bates, and they run around $200. We have a couple cheap versions made by Danner for a little under $200, but they do not last very long. Our good quality boots are over $400. We can only wear specific boots now because they have to have the EGA symbol on the side of the boot heel now. I liked it when we wore the same boots as the Army and everyone else, it was much cheaper, lol.
This is the thing I have Airbourne and it’s all about running , now I don’t know which one of the combat boots to buy right now
I’m home on hbl and they let us wear personal boots🤷♂️
Outside of basics It is also up to your Company commander or Battalion commander to what type of foot ware they will allow you to wear.
my man really just said 2lbs vs 1lbs 16oz
This weighs 2 lbs, this other one weighs 1lb 16oz.
Do you have a link to buy the boots you get issued at basic?
We had New Balance back in the late 80's
I was issued the Propper series 10, my first mistake was not putting in the inserts I was given. They make all the difference.
Are you able to wear “bates” shoes without being in the marines? Just want to make sure it’s legal. Thank you for your time
Yes they're sold to civilians
Yes but Bates is more of a Navy thing
@@SpecJack15 Do you know what else is a Navy thing? 😏
It's a very nice boot the Nike sfb it's great very light and does the work it need to do. You can run very well with them.
Do you know which ones Matt has in the video?
I seen several BCT graduation videos from Ft Sill where graduates are actually wearing aftermarket boots which made me wonder if it was Ft Sill SOP or...?
One trick I learned not by one but multiple Bundeswehr soldiers for long marches. Don't wear fresh socks, wear a pair you've worn one or two days beforehand.
Now I don't know how DS will react to a pair of dirty socks lying around so this might be useless to US basic training.
Just did basic at Fort Jackson, you can't wear any boots other than what they give you (your feet will hate you, I got 12 blisters during basic). As for running shoes some battalions/companies will let you get a profile for better shoes. Mine allowed it until half the company wanted their personal shoes. If you get on profile more than likely they allow you to use your personal (if you want to buy some from the PX just say your personal shoes are older than 6 months). Best of luck all
I ship out on the 20th! Fort Jackson. Thanks for the video Matt!!
Jackson july 2nd
Rookies should know that some boots are heavy for good reasons. Your boots sturdiness should be in proportion to the weight you carry especially in long marches to give your ankles the support you need.
For pt shoes we had either New balances or some weird SAS brand. Luckily my company earned the privilege to buy new boots as Sto-1’s if you have the chance, take ittttt
Unless you are on a boot waiver, no you can not wear any thing other than the boots they have issued you. Now I don't know about the Army but I know in the Air Force, if the TI approves your sneakers or tennis shoes for PT then you are allowed to wear them, but they still give you the option to buy a pair at boot camp.
I'll save you some trouble, don't you dare wear any other boots until you get to your first command after bootcamp and AIT/A school. Even then, tread carefully.
Cadet Basic Training at West Point allows you to bring your own boots. AR 670-1 compliant of course.
Get a boot profile and maybe you'll get some after the Forge if you're lucky.
COVID has really screwed everything up. I'm shipping to Ft Leonard Wood (31B) in 3 weeks for BCT/AIT, and I've been told that reception may take up to 3 weeks because of corona.
Hey that’s the mos I want I’m going to join next year when I turn 17 what was your asvab score??

I'd be interested in knowing what boots to wear to train in, something as close as possible to what's used in basic.
Bates
They'll put shoes on you in Army. And ain't gonna wait for you to put them on, either!
When you say that eagle card thing is that uniform pay? Does the army even pay/give you uniforms. I ask because ive been told the army is the only branch to give you money to buy uniforms.
Thank you for your service, thanks for the info. You are the best youtuber!
So how do they size you? I wear a 14-15 wide but the stores I used to go to their experts would sell me 11s. Eventually I got wise that the blisters weren't just poor form on my part
Can you swap out the sole in basic? I know no one would be able to tell but would you be able to 1. Get the sole in there with out it being taken away and 2. Do they they check if put a new sole in?
During your time in basic training, you are NOT ALLOWED to wear anything that the Army did not issue to you without your drill Sergeant's permission. END OF GAME.
Canadians: laughs in BOOTFORGEN
(TLDR: Canadians like myself can buy and get reimbursed for our own boots, provided they are within standards. I like my issued boots though so I will probably use them anyway.)
Where can I but those boots (Army issue ones)
I'm not in the states
How do they handle it if your feet are half a size different? Will they issue you mis-matched pairs or are you doomed to suffer with blisters on one foot?
1 pound is 16 ounces ... lol
I’ve been told that the garmont t8 are the best
Did my BCT summer of 2003 Ft. Benning, GA. Person gear was taken first evening and forced to buy everything from the little PX at reception. I came with dental stuff, soap and the works. (recruiter issued me a list of crap to buy ahead of time) had to store most of it and was unable to use any of it. Suggestion do not take that cheap little Go Army black promotional bag your recruit gives you. Everyone had one and my stuff was stolen when another dude was sent home early. We wet or dampened the insides of our boots at reception and wore them around as much as possible to break them in.
I went to Benning in 99 and I brought my own running shoes only if you don't have some or not the right color they'll tell you to buy some
Taxi tv series 78 thru 83 always plays in background. Cool
Lol this is the most over thought video ever it’s not that hard kiddos show up and go with the flow this man is putting more mind power into picking boots than you will need in all 9 weeks
They let us half way through basic they definitely won’t let you use them during red phase but it’s always good to take them
Hey cool video and great content. I just got out of osut and at least for C Co. 2-19 from Sand Hill Fort Benning and we got to buy new boots after red phase along with high and tight haircuts and military reg. Fades. We got our personal shoes after White phase. I know for the infantry things are changing with the new 22 week cycle. I was the last 14 week for my company but keep up the great work and content man.
No I was c 219 cycle after u and we were 14 weeks
Thank you for the information
I just got back, an you will get three choices of running shoes, SAS, New balllence, an another one, that I forgot the name of but they will have a shoe for each type of foot and other sizes. There comfortable
Please make a vid about foreigners in the USArmy(anything will be useful), I'm European but trying to get my card, so I can come and join.
Love your dedication.
Why not join your own country?

he said he trying to get a green card...
my nike sfb coyote...13size....2years old..i wear for running,airsoft...and truck driving at winter....no problem...my weight is 120kg.....
No you can not use your boots or running shoes at bct locations. When you are at ait you can though.
How can I buy some of those issued boots if I'm not in basic. No one ever says they're name. They just call them hot weather boots
I’m on HBL, and it’s kinda changed. it’s DS depending and company depending. My DS told us to buy boots while we are home and we can wear them when we come back. and if you don’t buy them at home, after the 6 mile ruck March we will be able to buy boots. idk if that’s across the board but at infantry OSUT that’s what we’re doing
No. 0:07 wait till you get to your unit. Then buy Garmont NFS’s. Trust me.
Back in the real US ARMY 70-80s...Boots all the way!!! This Army days is funny!!!.
Yes, if you have a profile. :D
My husband is 3rd or 4th pair of boots not sure though. I forgot if he told me the brand he got but he did say he paid $150 for them. He is a huge fan aisacs and Brooks running shoes.
What's the brand of the current bct? Trying to figure out my size so I dont mess up
If anyone's reading this it doesn't matter, they size you there. Just make sure you feel the boots out when their sizing you and think about what they say. Take your time
And wtf winter boots lol I and bravo 1-46 only got 2 pairs of basic boots for the whole of osut in Georgia but I am infantry so idk what u we’re lol
If you buy the basic boots and break them in you can use those same with the running shoes
But if you buy some high speed boots will not use those till like AIT
Danner Tachyon boots are very light
its always best to do basic/bootcamp with the issued hoes and get new ones when you graduate. i threw away my shoes in the squat bay in bootcamp the night before we graduated and the drill instructors made me take them home before i threw them away and got new ones. i was that guy and that quick to get new stuff.
