This is fantastic information thanks Taylor. The biggest takeaway is the white balance, I rely on my Nikons AWB to help me work a bit faster. Now that the A7R5 has reasonably good AWB it makes this camera much more suitable for my work flo. 👍
Thank you. I just replaced my S5iiX cameras with two fx3s but realized this would be a better fit for one of them. So I ordered one to test out. I think I’ll be keeping this and returning one of the fx3’s so I have a photography camera to grow into but still have two cameras for video for solo shooting content. Great video 👍
Well I’ve had mine for a year now and it’s my favorite Sony full frame camera even though I also have an A1 which is another great camera. Also added an A7CR for a smaller lighter backup since I like to carry and travel with two bodies. Nice to have both options. Great lenses available as well. Thank you for your video. Take care.
Question... Do I buy the A7RV now $400 off and get the battery grip for free as a bonus, or do I wait for the upcoming A7V and hope its just as good at a cheaper price?
Nice to see my new home town (Lisboa) in your presentation. I’m considering this camera as a replacement to my A7RIII. Most of the time I shoot with Leicas.
I tried this camera at Creative Space NYC and the way the display is designed is how Sony should’ve done it for their new cameras starting with the A7SIII and after. Even I want this camera though I’m fine with my A7III that I’ve been using for 2 years.
yea this screen design will make everyone happy, I enjoy using a7Siii for photography because of quieter shutter but the screen is irritating to flip out for simple low/high shots
I’m wondering with the medium lossless raw does the low light abilities of this camera improve at that setting. I’ve watched lots of videos where the lower megapixel cameras seem to have better performance in low light. Thank you in advance if you answer. I know that you both you and magic have both used this.
This is promising. Still Dreaming of the A1 (no blackout fast sensor readout, 30fps or more, advanced video settings) with A7RV 61mp file output and Ai AF. I guess A1mkII (hopefully). If/when this comes out, it will be my perfect do all camera.
Fantastic review sir. I’ve been watching you review the R6, R3, the A7iv and others…..glad you found what works for you. Looks as though you’re just going to have a lot of fun shooting with that camera. Enjoy.
Maybe if it is. This is also perfect for me. That doesn’t mean it’s perfect for all. Things that would make it more perfect for me: lower file sizes in a compressed medium raw format. Stacked sensor for faster read out and less rolling shutter in silent.
I’m torn between this camera or the a1, I’m researching and due to the stacked sensor the a1 has its classed as much better. I shoot portrait and wedding, what’s your thoughts ?
Hi Taylor. Is there an issue with the Sony a7rv evf display quality dropping dramatically when set to high 120hz? The display exhibits a lot of moire when auto focusing. Although this doesn’t seem to effect the image quality.
I'm so glad I found you! I almost went for the A74 for Hybrid shooting then came across your page and definitely going with a7rv.. what's the title of this song at 1:00 by the way!!?? Thanks again. you have a follower for life now!!
Taylor, do you use the electronic shutter for wedding work? I'd love of course, but I'm guessing I would need to use the mechanical shutter much of the time due to the slower readout speed of the high mp sensor.
Sadly I don’t have much info. I haven’t used the electronic shutter at all on my RV I don’t think. I find it’s quiet enough in mechanical and no potential problems
Taylor, love your work! I recently bought the A7rv with a new grip and found that the grip did not fit and later found out that that is an issue with the current grip sold and said to fit as per the Sony Corporate, but I can tell you that after taking it back to Precision Camera in Austin Texas I was told that I was among numerous a7rv owners advising that the battery grip fitment was off. I had a gap that I was able to see through. Was wondering if you had the same issue if and when you tried a battery grip with your camera. There is a big thread on DP Review regarding this issue. Hope it gets fixed soon and maybe you could contact some of your Sony rep's and see what's up with this issue. Keep up the good work. Thank You
For me the a7RV is the perfect camera. I’ve had a Panasonic GH3 for over 10 years. It’s decent, but long in the tooth. My GH3 kit includes 7 lenses and all of the other components to capture stills and videos. But I’m replacing ALL of it to get an a7RV with everything needed to capture both stills and videos. I.e., pretty much starting from scratch again. And happily doing it.
That's a big part why I am happy to have switched from Canon. After countless years of them releasing a camera only for it to be crippled out the gate to protect the 1D or Cinema line, I was just tired of that corporate strategy. Sony, for their flaws, they really do seem to give you everything that you need and have really differentiated their lines so that you're never envious of a pricier model just because.
I would say the limitation of this camera is pretty obvious, if you do anything fast action it’s handcuffed. The FPS is less than my 47iv and one quarter of the A1 or a9ii. When shooting high quality video and there is quick movement there is extreme rolling shutter. I love it, but suggesting it’s not limited is pretty oblivious.
My Sony a7s iii colors looks very good in comparison to my Canon R5, and this new Sony camera apparently has improved from the S iii, so I think the color science comparison is almost, if not already dead at this point. It’s all preference now

Not for any action/sports/birds, but not that it supposed to be. Limited to mechanical shutter, same awful rolling shutter, same A7R4 sensor. Not an A1, but would need a stacked sensor, which Sony will never do, limiting that to the A1 and A9 series.
