Kent, Once again you hit a home run with me. I have a passion for cooking and starting to love the art of turning. At the moment I do not have a mortar and pestle but after watching this I will soon. The way you explain the process, the tools and the way the tool is presented are so helpful for someone trying to learn. Very well done and a tool in the kitchen is the added bonus when done. Thinking I'll use some mesquite on mine.

I made a sled for sawing down small stock. It rides in the miter slot and has several rows of pin brads sticking up that grasp the rough stock. And outboard on the sled is a t-track that can engage hold-downs to stabilize the stock. My fingers only guide the sled from the outer edge, making for safe and stress-free sawing.
For the sanding disk, I made it 9"D with velcro hook material. This allows the use of floor sanding net by Diablo in various grits. They can be removed to cleaned and replaced. By the way, for any disc sander, the cutting speed is graduated by the distance from the center.

Dear Kent,
I am an aspiring woodworking professional (soon to be registered with the Chamber of Commerce) and have just recently taken up woodturning as an aside. As I am quite a pigheaded 50 yo, being at the receiving end of education is just not it for me. I usually just have to find things out for myself and practise. A lot. But lo and behold! Here's your youtube films. Without even knowing me, you have been helping me a ton! You're a perfect teacher and I hope you'll continue to be one for a very, very long time.
It was fun to see you working on the opposite side of the lathe, as that is exactly what I do, when turning the inside of a bowl. You see, I am lefthanded in a world designed for righthanded people and sometimes have to come up with weird solutions. So, it's either that or almost sitting on top of the lathe bed for me, lol. (or learn to turn righthanded, but that's not going to happen). I am always curious what other lefties come up with (anone?)
I like this video in particular, as it combines two of the most fun activities in my life, woodworking and cooking. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing more of your work. Big hugs form the Netherlands and Happy turning :)

Thanks for another inspirational video. I'ver suddenly gotten the answer to that perennial question - "what am I going to make as presents for my extended family this year?" I've got a short list of spindle turning projects, but it keeps getting longer because I've been avoiding them (I've only done a few pens, nothing of any size). Using scrap wood I can make some highly educational mistakes mistakes - my second favorite way to learn (first is watching your videos ;>).

Great job. Un mortier et pilon are frequently une in our French Canadian culture. I’m really happy you mane another wonderful project to do that can be given as gift ( must be a good friend!)
We also collect the coffee in the single use drip cup and recycle the plastic cups we also collect the eggshell from the week and crush them to almost powder consistency with the pilon and mortier. Once we have collected enough such as grocery bag full We dump it all with our rich flower bed fertilizer bed. Le pilon et creuset are a major tool in our daily life. Be well.

Being an RN, I am very well versed in the use of the mortar and pestilence. However, I have always had problems due to them usually being made out marble. It is slippery and pills or spices pop out. This is a genius idea. I can't wait to make one as soon as my injured arm is healed. Thank you for the inspiration!

I like it. I have two made of stone. One has a narrow pestle, that lets me put a lot of pressure onto a small area in a narrow bottom mortar. My other mortar and pestle fits together, such that the pestle, is the same wide shape, but just a bit smaller than the inside of the mortar. This wide set works great on hard stuff to make a fine powder. I just turn the pestle under pressure, and stop before the grinds work their way up and out the mortar. tap the grinds down to the bottom, grind some more.
I have been thinking of useful things that can be made on a lathe. I see another mortar and pestle in my future; soon as I get a couple more tools.
What would be the hardest wood to use, so you can really grind stuff that is hard? Oak, Rock Maple. Beech, Locus?
I think I would use pure tong oil inside and out, as it is a drying oil. The mortar will absorb oils as you use it, if not sealed. Those oils may become rancid???
The mortar will also be difficult to clean and prevent flavors from one grinding being imparted to another. This even happens with my stone mortar and pestles. So I would not use anything chemical or plastic based as a sealer, but I would seal it myself, with something that dries and doesn't go rancid.
Linseed oil given time to dry. Tong oil dries faster, I hear, and seems durable.
Watching this video, I had the thought that the pestle needs to match the curve of the mortar inside, but also it may be really cool if there were a way to carve grinding groves into the bottom of the pestle, double spiraled perhaps ;-)
A tip: It looks really clumsy seeing wood turners cut down their big pieces on their band saws. Just watching, it looks to me that this would be far easier, if you had a thin sled with a runner fitted to the slot in your table. I doubt you would even need any sort of clamp since you are already used to going completely by hand. Anyway, I suppose it isn't so important to get these cuts straight, but I think a sled would also be easier on the band saw.
You could add some sort of clamp/dogs to a sled/jig for something really difficult.

I didn't turn the stone mortar and pestles, I bought them....but I suppose someone must have turned them.
There are many very ancient stone "jars" though, that appear to have been turned on lathes, but were more likely produced on a turing machine. Why mention this? These are pre dynastic Egypt, carved thinly out of very hard stones, and done with levels of precision, main stream academic wants to ignore. Perhaps you may be interested in learning about this?

Great video Kent! My wife wants me to make one for her now! Lol! For a side question, how would you go about cleaning after use, so you don't get the flavors from the other spices in it?
Thanks. Just wipe it out. I would avoid soaps as they will become incorporated in the wood. If you are grinding totally different things, I'd make a few. For instance, if you grind ginger, turneric and other root spices for curry, just use that one for curry. Hope that helps. Please subscribe, and Happy Turning!

If you want a food safe finish. Water and honey mixed together. Flame dry it will harden the finish. I do it for tobacco pipes

Great video! This is definitely in my to-do list. One thing I have set up, and I don’t know if this will help or not, is a little line-lock flexible nozzle on a magnet hooked to an air-line with a ball valve (1/4”). I can point that air towards the inside of a bowl to blow chips out as I go, or the back of a forstner bit as I’m boring to not only clear debris but cool the bit. You can tweak the flow with the ball valve. Just an idea! Thanks for the great content.

@@TurnAWoodBowldimmer switches dont work on AC motors, they reduce the voltage not the HTZ which is what needs changing to control motor speed, they seem to work due to the low voltage but they also loose power (torque) and will burn out your motor.

Is it a good idea to leave it raw on the interior of mortar and bottom of pestle? Should those be coated in mineral oil just seal the raw wood? I'm going to try to make 2 of these soon.
How would you clean this? If the inside of the mortar and the bottom of the pestal are unfinished, would water damage them?
Just rise it out well and dry. Water is fine as long as it doesn't soak.

I thoroughly enjoy all of your vids! I also learn a lot from you as you are an excellent teacher. However, you made mention to a five-inch rule for using a push stick. That's a very good and widely used rule. But another safety focus is stability. Your bandsaw was freely rocking back and forth, which is highly unsafe! That's right....I'm calling you on it. Not trying to be a Karen here, but I don't want to see anyone get injured either. Take five minutes and steady that thing up before using it again. Thanks again for sharing your craft and knowledge.
You're correct Chuck. I was being lazy. The bandsaw is on a moveable base and I didn't take the time to lock it down. ;)

Hello Lender. I'm not familiar with that lathe. I just looked online. It seems fine, but try to find other reviews first. It might be great. At that size and price point, I had a Jet 1221 VS and it was fantastic. They are most likely both comparable. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Any suggestions on pieces coming out of tight 4 jawed chucks, the piece I'm using is wild cherry.
Find Kent's video on 'turning the perfect tenon'. I just started turning and it helped me so much. I would have had to learn the hard way why things kept coming off my lathe. Also, I returned the first chuck I bought because it didn't have dovetail jaws. Dovetails work so well.

Not sure, using the scraps of wood I have to determine size.
Experience making wooden spoons, spatulas, serving forks, ladles, pasta forks, and now going into boles to match to make complete sets for serving salads, pastas, deserts is my long term goal. Using machine shop and tool making experience from the past, mixing in classical wood crafts, I am still trying out different techniques to get these things done quickly and with repeatable results. Imagine a set with utensils and a matching serving bowl with a lid as a server, the lid as another bowl, then having smaller salad bowls inside this stacked neatly. With this, add wooden utensils to match. Can it be done? We will see in a year or so. It will be fun to try!

Excellent video as are each of your instructional videos. I have adopted many of your techniques and have found that they are easy to apply and result in a nice product. I also enjoy your descriptions of the wood you use for your projects. I especially enjoy the term "ditch wood". My sister in law just ask me to make her one of those and I thought about using beech. Do you think that would be strong enough for that?
Yes beech is a hard wood just as much as maple. It turns well although it is very light in colour it has great wood patterns if you stain the outside and use a couple of table spoons of instant coffee diluted in one teaspoon of water and swirl it all in the inside for 3-4 minuted. Let it dry up side down on a paper towel. Once dry apply a generous (1/2 tsp) of beeswax. Buff well then repeat. Same application for the pilon. Enjoy!

You leave the grinding surfaces untreated? Won't there be cross-contamination from the material being ground?
Yes, perhaps. I suggest making one set for each substance you will be grinding. ;) shrug

I think I would finish the inside with bread board oil, (mineral oil)?

Are there any issues with using walnut for foodstuffs? I've heard it is toxic to plants and some humans are allergic to it. Beautiful piece. Thanks for the video!

I’m trying to think back at what heard. Somebody asked if you could use walnut shavings for horse beds and mulch in flower beds and one of the answers was a big no because it’s toxic. I saw that on sawmillcreek turning forum probably ten or more years ago.
@@richstewart1 What I have heard is that walnut is not "toxic" except that it has a low pH (acidic) so shavings and such are going to be harmful to plants. I suppose its also possible if someone has a nut allergy that they could react to the walnut, so that means nobody should chew the mortar and pestle... I think these pieces are truly beautiful and should have no problems. Walnut has a pretty open pore structure, so you might just have to be more thorough when you are cleaning them to get your spices fully out and not contaminate whatever you put in there next.
