I’m a pretty quiet person when it comes to posting online. But after watching this video I had to leave a comment. This video brought a tear to my eye. Most people never know the daily struggles that a family goes through when it comes to a sick child. And I pray it stays that way. But for you to take the time to make this bowl means a lot. Keep up the good work. Thank you for all your videos. With this bowl you made God will bless you some way.
Hi Kent. I started turning this past March, and your videos are the ones that have helped me the most. I have been working at my lathe with great joy ever since and, although my skills still have a long way to go, I plan to join the “Beads of Courage” program. You see, I have a special reason. My son was 5 years old in 1987 when he was diagnosed with a childhood cancer called “Wilm’s Tumor” that had taken over one of his kidneys. He was treated at hospitals in Chicago, but they used a treatment program designed by St. Jude’s. It took two years of radiation and chemotherapy, but he was cured! He now has two beautiful children and just celebrated his 40th birthday. THANK YOU from deep in my heart for introducing me to this wonderful program. Chas 😂
As a young woodturner who has my fair share of time in the hospital with cystic fibrosis I can say that these bowls would have an unbelievable effect on children who have to stay in the hospital for 2+ weeks at a time. Please contribute to this wonderful program.
Zachary, Thank you for writing and sharing your perspective! Yes, I can only imagine how much of a struggle that must be. BTW, I did design work for the Boomer Esiason Foundation many years ago. They are helping to find a cure for CF. I wish you all the best with your CF adn your woodturning. I bet woodturning helps ease you mind as well. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thanks Kent. My granddaughter had these beads all through her short life with cystic fibrosis. She always loved getting them. She would really have loved a bowl like this
Wow, I can't imagine. Sorry for your lose and I think you're right. Maybe the BoC helps lighten the load for these children. Let's all make more BoC bowls! Thanks for sharing!
What a wonderful project. This bowl will put a huge smile on the face of a most deserving child and warm the hearts of their parents. Thank you for this, and I certainly hope the one who receives this beautiful piece of art will find the link to this video so they can see the love and care you put into making this awesome piece. God Bless you Kent.
So now put a challenge out to all the other wood turning channels out there to turn a lidded bowl for Beads of Courage as well. God bless you for doing this and bringing this cause to the attention of many. I had never heard of it before.
Beads of courage is not restricted to cancer patiets. It is for any family with a child or children recieving medical attention. It is used all of the time in the NICU.
funnily enough at my club in rotorua new zealand we were talking about the club making bead bowls for beads of courage, and then this popped up. so good. thanks for your work, but also your encouragement for turners to contribute to their communities
Timing is everything! Hope this helps add a new option. Thanks for contributing to the BoC program and giving a little hope! All the best to you in NZ and Happy Turning!
Some kids, like my son, have EXTENSIVE collections of beads. We started to keep all IV beads on one string. All ICU beads on one string... ETC... this is a wonderful program that ACTUALLY helped and continues to help my son. THANK YOU FOR THIS!!
This is so nice to hear! I'm glad we can help in this small way to add a bit of joy and acknowledgement to your journey. I wish you all the best for you son!
I'm glad you did this video. I'm gonna get in on this. I started turning just a few months ago. My wife bought me a little lathe for christmas, and in the past few months i have learned so much from your videos. Worth the Effort channel has taught me a ton too. I haven't sold any work yet but I've given away about everything I've made... maybe 30 bowls and countless tops and little boxes. I'm an electrical supply distributor and 1 of my customers is a hardwood mill; they give me awesome scraps so i give them back what i make with their wood. I think they'll understand when i stop giving them stuff and start giving it to Beads of Courage.
Sounds like a great arrangement. They probably are giving you crotch wood too, right? That stuff is hard for them to mill. That's a win-win. All the best and Happy Turning!
A coworker introduced me to the Beads of Courage program a while ago. I will definitely be making at least one! I am also Not going to wait for my wood to dry naturally! Thank you, Kent!!
Awesome piece! Thanks for supporting these kids to overcome a difficult time in their lives. We all need to step up and help any way we can, for these children are our future. We can give them a goal to look forward to. God bless you and all who step up to help.
I am contemplating buying a larger lathe so that I can turn bowls but then I thought, "What will I do with the bowls once I learn to turn them?" And then I see your video on Beads of Courage. Once I master turning bowls, this will be my project. What wonderful timing!!
Hi Kent best ever tutorial well explained and so easy to digest had my lath two years but never used it because my friend got nasal cancer wood turning good protective gear is a must it’s not what you see that counts but what you don’t see he is ok now but had a rough time of it might give the lath a shot when I can afford to get a good breathable mask. Ray.
Hi Kent, I'm a newbe to wood turning. Just bought a second hand lathe , I have some extras with it chuck, tools extra but there's always another and what is missing is a bench mounted chisel sharper. So that's my next find. Thank you very much for being so clear on explanations. I am already an avid watcher of your videos. Harvey
Thank you so much! Yes, it is. Just dropped off eight lidded bowls from and for our turning club this week. So glad to help! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Hi Kent, I can’t say that I watched your video in order to copy the bowl for as far as I know we do not run a similar campaign here in the UK. But there are so many useful lessons to be learnt from your work and thought processes. Thank you also for your excellent commentary and high standard of camera recording. The whole presentation was a joy to watch.
Thanks for doing this video. in 2021 I made 104 Beads of Courage boxes and delivered those to the Dell Children's Hospital in Austin Texas. I'm hoping to match that for 2022.
You have a generous and compassionate heart, Kent. Some child (and parents) is going to treasure this gift. The bowl's shape is beautiful and graceful. A very instructive video, well narrated and videoed. I'm certain I'll review this several more times in the future.
Congrats on your involvement in Beads of Courage, and thanks for bringing it to your “family”. A wonderful bowl for a wonderful cause. Prayers and blessings to the child whose life will be upheld by it. Bob M.
Wonderful video. I have twice turned one bowl. It turned out very nice. However, I just learned a lot of good technique from watching you. I appreciate the way you teach this.
Kent - That is an amazing bowl! I love the profile with the flow of the lid into the bowl. Great cause too. If I can get even half as good as you have done it will be a success for some child. Great job.
I love it when a random video is suggested and it turns into an interesting experience. I also like it if the presenter looks like John Locke from the show Lost! Have a like for ticking so many boxes Kent, keep up the good work and well done for getting off that bloody island!
Thanks for your participation in the program. I haven't turned a bowl yet for the program but have made many Beads of Courage boxes. I'll make a bowl next.
Great job explaining everything 😊. I am just learning how to turn wood bowls and your videos are a great learning tool for me. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 😊
Nice job on the bowl and bringing to the front this organization to support! Everytime I watch your videos I want to go out to my woodturners shop and turn another project! Thank You for all you do!
Great idea Kent! I haven't turned a bowl yet (waiting for a replacement chuck because it won't screw down all the way) but when I do I will definitely consider donating! I have 50 cords of firewood I got (all for free) from tree service guys. I still have a few rounds that are unsplit that I will be examining for wood turning projects! Love your videos, been learning a heckuva lot before even getting a lathe.....and once I got it I just started turning thanks to all the knowledge from you and others on YT and forums. Thanks again.
Thank you. You can try a simple plastic spacer for that chuck. I have a chuck that doesn't seat all the way and it works great. Here's a link amzn.to/312DSuR Happy Turning!
@@TurnAWoodBowl I ended up returning the Record Power chuck. The people I bought it from claims it spins down just fine on other spindles but I doubt it. I ordered, istead, a Oneway Talon and just received it today....and guess what? It spins down perfectly. So for anyone out there, don't use the Record Power SC3 chuck on the Powermatic PM2014 as it just won't seat properly on the shoulder....even with a spacer....So basically there's nothing wrong with my threads even though I mucked it up slightly with the set screw.....It might have worked with 2 spacers....but I think I'd rather not mount it that way. Very happy with how smooth the Oneway operates.
This is your best video so far. What a great thing to do, Kent. I definitely want to do this too. I have a new lathe on order that will allow larger projects and I have some walnut and American Elm that would fit the bill. I'll probably re-watch this video when the new lathe arrives and is set up. Maybe the the beads of courage bowl will be the first project. So appreciate this video.
This is such a beautiful and inspiring gift. I love it... I hope this doesn't sound morbid, but if the unthinkable happens and the young owner passes, this would also make a truly beautiful and sacred urn to hold them always.
Yes, that though crossed my mind too. But I think these will be put up on shelves and pulled down years from now to remember and share stories of that awful time the whole family successfully journeyed through together. Happy Turning!
Put a bunch of COOKIES in there and the Cookie Monster wi be checking it out! Great job, I enjoyed the whole vid and learned some about lidded vessels.
I am new to turning. Started during Covid and self teaching via videos. Have made about 25 bowls so far. Have made lots of mistakes but learning. Just found your videos and love them. Can’t wait to go through and learn the nuances of turning. This bead of courage video is awesome and inspiring. I turn for fun and give the bowls to family and friends. What a great idea to turn for such a great cause. I can’t wait to do this. Bob U
Beautiful BoC bowl. Great the way the epoxy came out to highlite the Bead! I have and would have on this piece incorperated the Bead into the knot. Great bowl for a great cause! Thanks for sharing, Take care, Dave
I liked the way you did that. I will look in to the beads of courage and if I have the wood will make them some. I may have to glue my wood together to make it big enough but if it can help, why not.
You are so welcome! I feel it's the least I and hopefully many more can do to help out these families just a little bit in their troubled times. Happy Turning!
I enjoyed this video and am now attempting to create one of my own. As a turner of only a couple of years, I’m not sure if my work is good enough for this awesome program. But who knows, it may turn out better than I think!
You can do it. Perhaps the first one will be a bit rough, but if you learn from that one you will make major improvements. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Jimmy, I'm sure they have a program there. Ideally, get with the BOC people via their website and they can get the bowl to children who need them. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Lovely piece of work Kent,I am going to see if we do similar in the UK and then go ahead and turn one or more. Love the work you do, you encouraged me to start TurnedByAndy
A wonderful creation that a child and the family will cherish. Do you think the old woodworkers trick of hiding a defect with matching sawdust and Titebond would work with a hole that goes completely through the wood? It might require a layer of epoxy followed by a final layer of PVA and sawdust.
My son is a police officer up North of Winnipeg, Manitoba and yes , in our so beautiful country of Canada. He is being called often to a specific house with parents with issues and there's a 10 year old little girl in the middle of this. One day my son happen to see a wooden box with ( I don't remember but upteen dozens )
I can only imagine. You have a certain type of tree that lines the streets in Winnipeg, don't you. Is it elm? I remember it is a tree that has blight in most other places.
Absolutely beautiful bowl for a beautiful cause. God bless you for caring.
Thank you very much Claude!

You can do it. Perhaps the first one will be a bit rough, but if you learn from that one you will make major improvements. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Beautiful job thank you for sharing 🙏🏽
You are so welcome. Thank you. Happy Turning!
Love the Beads of Courage. I was wondering if they could be sent to St Jude in Memphis Tn.
Fantastic! I'm honored and thrilled you are turning! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
nice job, I just started turning around 6 months ago, I have learned a lot from your vids...
Cool, thanks. Glad to help. Happy Turning!
Beautiful.....
Thank you! Cheers!
Your best video yet and they’re all good.💕
Wow, thank you! Happy Turning!
A wonderful creation that a child and the family will cherish.
Do you think the old woodworkers trick of hiding a defect with matching sawdust and Titebond would work with a hole that goes completely through the wood? It might require a layer of epoxy followed by a final layer of PVA and sawdust.
Possibly! It would require waiting a while and possible second layering. That's why I like the 5-minute epoxy so much. Happy Turning!
Que bonito quedó es increíble como una madera se puede embellecer.
Gracias. Me alegro que disfrutes esto.
cool! just started the adventure of turning looking forward to it
Welcome and enjoy the process! Happy Turning!
