    First up I need to thank zeon_of_deikun / ‪@horriblypink‬ for the help with Blender to get some sweet looking wireframe models. Thanks buddy you saved my bacon! Now on with the show!

    Intelligence wins battles and wars. How do you collect or gather intelligence? The answer is to pay over the odds for a questionable scout 'mech that, at first anyway, couldn't fulfil its role and keep up its pace.
    Its everyone favourite scout 'mech, the Ostscout under the magnifying glass.

    This is like a enchanted version of the "listen to this article" option some news outlets offer for their news articles. I approve. Sean should add these to the articles once you get them out. :D

    Boy, do I have a story about an Ostscout. Back during the war, when we landed on Tikonov, I got assigned to run a bit of flank reconnaissance in my Cicada. My sector mostly stayed quiet until a few days in, when up pops this lone OTT-7J, scooting across the steppe, weaving back and forth waving its arms. I'd been running solo for a few days - so mostly on a lark, I opened up a broadband channel and asked the Ostscout jock "Are you scouting, or just happy to see me?"
    That got a great laugh from the Liao pilot, and she asked why it couldn't be both. And WOW. She had a voice so sultry that I needed another heat-sink installed in my Cicada. We shot the breeze for a bit and things were going *quite well*. I figured I was just about to score yet another victory for Hanse Davion when all of a sudden, her boyfriend shows up in a VND-1R Vindicator - and let me tell you, that dude was MAD. I got on the horn and yowled for backup, and my buddy showed up in his Enforcer. Within about a half-hour, the entire thing escalated and my entire RCT was slugging it out with some of Liao's finest. Never did get the Ostscout's secure bandwidth, unfortunately...
    Not how the history books will tell it - but, no bull, I know how it really went. I was there.

      @@battletopia Yes, absolutely - I figure these are just the sort of stories told by veterans at the bar in later years. After listening to the original story, I had a bit of inspiration on my commute home and quickly wrote that up. I'll write more, if that lightning strikes again...

    I had an Ostscout fail a piloting roll with a damaged gyro, running into a heavy woods on a cliff side, fall of the cliff onto a hostile tank. Damage was a through armor crit, set off the ammo, both went up in an explosion 500lrm's strong. The crater became a new lake the next time the rains came through.

    • @battletopia
      @battletopia  8 месяцев назад

      That is an epic story dude! Tha is for sharing and let's be honest that's a huge win for the Ostscout. I mean it probably couldnt take the tank out with its weapons alone

    I knew of the Spider before I knew of the Ostscout, and I always wondered what the point of making a spider with even worse weaponry would be. Though I suppose it's really the other way around, isn't it? The Ostscout predates the Spider, as the Spider was part of the new designs meant to replace the original batch of licensed art.
    Ostscout can take a PPC to the chest without going internal, so there's that I suppose...

      Thanks for listening dude. I would personally take a spider over an Ostscout any day...unless I have my semi-guided on the board and TAG is available and can't afford a Scarabus

      The Spider and Ostscout both originally appeared in the CityTech boxed game, before the bad times, before the lawsuits. I have the box and its standees together somewhere on the shelf. Both were intended to give alternatives to the Bug 'mechs when doing scouting roles. At the time my much younger self really didn't like or understand the 'mech's role as a sturdy scout.

      @jamesripley8031 If you started with the 3025 TRO, they were side by side, so to speak. The TRO primarily gathered all the mechs from the boxed game and the Mechwarrior 1.0 RPG and added a few new ones.

      @@observationsfromthebunker9639 My own introduction to Battletech was first through the Crescent Hawk game, which I was a touch too young to really play; then the 4th Edition Box set (which had the Spider but no Unseen anything), then Decision at Thunder Rift which had Unseen but no Ost-anything. So I guess we're filling in a bit of a gap in my knowledge here!

    I have a soft spot for the Ostscout, but I think it works better for fiction than the table top. Only time I ever deployed one was from a random roll table for a quick match. It lasted until round 8 of 10 because A) my opponent didn't see it as a threat and B) the dice were in its favor. I like how it looks and its technical options, but in a standard game I'd rather deploy a Locust or Wasp.

    • @battletopia
      @battletopia  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching. I really need to do a random table game! Never done it yet. If you want something that punch back then yeah a Locust or Wasp has more firepower. But I'd argue that if you want a smash and grab 'mech, or one that be fast and jump (the wasp is too slow for me personally, its like signing a death wish for your pilots) then the Ostscout can do it nicely.

    The only bad thing about this mech is this video as it's the premier Succession Wars scout mech, SCOUT being the key word. With it's jump jets and armor it can get into and out of any hot zone with minimum damage, allowing it to fulfill its primary purpose, recon and artillery spotting. Arguably swapping out the medium laser for more armor would be more ideal, but when TAG gets rediscovered that becomes it's true primary weapon, allowing it to bring far more powerful weapons to bear than any light mech could mount themselves. As for the competition, Air assets are easily countered by Flak while rarely retaining as much armor, while Hover assets are limited to open terrain on planets with atmospheres though can easily travel over large lakes and coastal waters.

      Thanks for listening. I'd say if the 'mech is designed well and utilised properly then its a good 'mech. It's like the Charger, a punching bag but can still be incredibly useful. I've used it on the tabletop to great effect, but I live semi-guided LRMS!
