There is nothing more annoying than having an itch you cannot scratch. At least that's what Nicholas Kerensky found, with dug in infantry carrying 'mech killing weapons.
To counter this threat a bold, new solution was created. The Vulcan.

Ironiclly, many of the Vulcans variants are really solid mech variants. The 5T is beast for the succesion wars. The new 7T is scary.
Not having experience of them and only reading TRO's right now, they wouldn't make my A team. But I should put them down on the tabletop and test. Maybe a megamek game or two will help make my mind up. I like the look of the 7T though
The 5T is still garbage. A Jenner outruns and outguns it. It like all 40 ton mechs, is a heaped pile of shit.
@@willdavis3802 and that comment shows you no nothing about how to pilot a 40-ton mech.
@@Cytl-bu3nq Mathematically, all 40 ton mechs are bad. Same for 60 tonners. The break point for weight on engines and structure makes them worse than mechs of any other size.
No matter how I try I still think the Javelin is better most of the time.
An excellent reading, and yeah, even if the Vulcan is mechanically good, it looks awful. That matters. A lot.
The Vulcan -2T's crippling weakness is the AC/2. The Blackjack gets away with it because it has two of them, backed up by 4 medium lasers and some friends. For a 'mech like the Vulcan, that's supposed to be in the thick of it, shelling out 7 tons on a bb gun and its pellets, it's a terrible investment. The -5T is better overall, but swapping the AC/2 for another matched set of ML, MG, and Flamer would've been fine. Then put the rest in armor and heat sinks.
Since you did the Vulcan, now you got to do the rest of the 40 toners. Hermes II, Clint, Whitworth...
Thanks for the listen dude. Whitworth is done, find it here ruclips.net/video/lhjdcaDzRVQ/видео.htmlsi=1ZRa-qzd5oR3ppqB
I am slowly working through the backlog of the bad 'mech articles and Sean of Sarna is writing them as quickly as he can 😁 there's just so many of them though 🤣
@@battletopia oh yep you have done the Whitworth, and I didn't even realize I even gave it a thumbs up so I've seen it as well 😀.
@@lexington476 memmory is a fickle mistress I find 🤣
Greatest WIKI EVER!
Seyla!
I love my Vulcan in Mechwarrior 5. Just today i Build one with the new PPC-X and 4 Medium Lasers plus 1 Mashine Gun. Its a Wonderfull Litle CQC Fighter and Fast enough to Hunt down Anything that think it can Escape my Wrath.
God, guns, and Battletech. Love the story to go with the mech overview. Long live Sarna.
Long live Sarna! 🙏👌
Long live Sarna.
there is nothing wrong with the Vulcan except that it is often forced out of it's very specialized role
Thanks for listening 👍. It does suffer from Jagermech syndrome. It's often the way going into the succession wars where you don't have the logistics to replace lost forces and you just have to use what you have got.
That's all too true!@@battletopia
It's more expensive, and worse in mech to mech combat than the Firestarter, which fulfills that role far better.
@@willdavis3802 all true but it wasn't make for mech to mech combat. Just got forced into. The firestarter is a lovely little mech, especially in the HBS battletech game. Full that sucker with jump jets and small lasers and be makes a fantastic back stabber. The only time I've played one on the tabletop it fried a downed pilot because they couldn't rescue him, then promptly blew up from withering fire from us angry players 🤣
Do most players evaluate mechs by thinking how fast and how much damage dealing at what range against a battlemech on a fixed (small) map? Vulcan runs and ac2 hits at range. Disable a vehicle then Sweep in and flame on.
I remember the first time I fought a Vulcan.
I was using a relatively low risk Merc job to test out a custom Marauder II configuration with quad LB 5-X autocannons (two in each arm). A gangly, awkward 'mech hopped over a hilltop a few hundred meters away. My targeting system identified it as an enemy, so I unleashed a hail of cluster munitions on it.
The enemy 'mech lost most of its armor and one of its legs within seconds. I barely noticed its name before I finished it off: "Vulcan."
The Vulcan left a far lesser impression on me than I left on it.
Yeah not surprised it got sand blasted with that combo. I mean dual PPC or even quad PPC (you can never have enough PPCs!) Would get the job done too
Look whats that? What's what? Oh never mind. That kind of effect? 😁
@@battletopia Pretty much :)
I agree that the Vulcan does NOT look aesthetically pleasing AT ALL, but part of me pretty much likes it being designed around it's primary weapon - the Flamer.
Thanks for listening! It is definitely a 'mech only it's designer can love. After having an entire platoon wiped out by a single flamer, I can vouch for it being a horrific anti-infantry weapon
Ugh... the Vulcan my whipping boy mech. People loath the Charger or Urban mech.... The 2T Vulcan just sucks. Dig out entrenched infantry? Not in my experience. Great job Shrapnel. Keep up the good work. :)
Ok but hear me out…. A hunchback can also fight infantry, by absolutely demolishing the building they are hiding in……. 🤓
@@jamesripley8031 very true.
Thanks dude. Not sure how an AC2 would dig them out, I reckon SRM or an artillery strike might be better 😂
That could work! 👍
@@battletopiaOh the Flamer and Machine Gun is for that... The AC2 is the 2T's biggest problem. That is a lot of weight to commit that does not get it much. I have two thoughts on this. 1) It was for anti air work. To pop off light VTOLs that might come to the defense of the infantry the Vulcan is attacking. and/or 2) The Vulcan was designed pretty late in the SLDF Civil War. Maybe the AC2 was a place holder for an in development LB2xAC. That would give the Vulcan a few more options with cluster shot and a little more weight for more armor or weapons.
Never was a fan of the Vulcan by any stretch of the imagination.
I used one afew times early on in the life of Battletech. Mostly for scouting roles with the occasional infantry support.
Was overjoyed when I was able to jump into something with more bite and armor, a salvaged Wolverine.
But yeah between the Panther and Vulcan, I'd take the Panther.
Thanks for the listen dude and panthers rule. They are tanky little bodyguards
@@battletopia No problem bud. I'm just an old mech jockey who's tried most every mech out there just to say I did, well up until the 3055+ stuff started coming out lol.
But yeah Panther's have always been a good tough little mech. Not flashy but very sturdy and could lay on the heat if needed.
In one of my old campaigns we slavaged a Kuritan Panther and tweaked it out a bit with what parts we could fit. Wasn't as hard hitting without the PPC but with 5x medium lasers and some extra armor and heatsinks it could tear someone up in medium range combat.
That sounds like a great run and gun Panther. I am starting the "got to play them all" record soon
@@battletopia Yes it was. Run out, sting, run away. Was the main tactic with that thing. And having firepower on both arms now it was able to split shots as it ran and maneuvered. (3 on the right, 2 on the left arm). Normally carried inferno rounds in the SRM launcher.
If you can swap out the AC for a Rifle the dmg. increases a lot tonnage drops for armor .
Thanks for the listen dude.Is this in HBS battletech? Don't think rifles a thing in tabletop
@@battletopia Yes it is. It is called a rifle cannon, and is primitive tech AFAIK
@nemou4985 Actual tabletop rifles are avsolutely awful.
I agree with you. the Vulcan is really not that good.
On paper it looks bad, but as ever to validate a point the test must be done. So I suppose I should put it on the tabletop sometime soon
Play Mechwarrior 5, the Vulcan 5T is a decent upgrade for the light mechs you start with on career mode.
I've never played actually. Glad it's finally getting some love though. The scarecrow really deserves it
Volcan is alright if I am fighting Infantry formations.
Thanks for tuning in buddy. Yeah on paper this thing ticks all the boxes for being a murder machine to infantry. It is a grounder pounders nightmare
It's an anti-infantry mech that gets forced into anti-mech work. Used in its role, its fine. Used outside of it, yeah, it's hot garbage
Thanks for listening! True my friend, true. But that's the joy of a desperate fight for survival. Anything is better than nothing
Narrator, if you ever bothered to actually use one, you might change your tune, but until then what you say is simply nothing but rhetoric.
