One of my favorite sayings is "A tired dog is a good dog". Opening up space for Smokey is going to help wear her out by giving her more work to do. She instinctively wants to patrol and keep up on what is going on. The more space she has to cover, the more she will feel secure that everything is fine within the boundaries and she can calm down relax. Also being a puppy she really wants social contact, that's why she keeps trying to play with the chickens. If she is able to follow you around while you are on the property and get that steady interaction with you, your dad and your boy, it will help calm her down a lot. If you still have problems with her, another dog may be your best bet to get her settled down. Just my opinion but I would suggest if you do end up getting another dog, avoid getting any of the herding breeds (sheppards, cattle dogs, heelers) because they will chase and torment the livestock for something to do.
Totally! Especially for a GP; they are great at patrolling the property while staying within boundaries, & as large dogs, need lots of room to run around & expend energy. They also need good, consistent training. It's absolutely essential. My grandfather, trained dogs for the military, in WWII, and continued to do so for the remainder of his life. We learned a lot from him about the responsibility of owning dogs, the importance of training, by keeping them alongside you as you work, & letting them know you're the Alpha dog. That means, not allowing them to jump up on you. That's the #1, very bad behavior that I see owners making every day. It's a very dominant behavior. Another sign of Alpha dog behavior most people aren't aware of, is when dogs step on your foot. If you allow these two behaviors, you'll never get a handle on training the dog, and being able to enjoy a well-behaved animal. Even goat's need to be trained, or they can actually kill an adult. And rabbits can be trained to use a litter box, and do tricks. I've done it.
I like your idea of 2 goats to eat down the brush safely, and the larger fence area. I think that Smokey would enjoy playing with the goats. Adult goats would not be harmed by her playfulness.
Smoky would do good with goats 🐐 I think they become pals and can run with too..just idea and help clean up too with making a bigger area ...im sure ya will make it happen to keep smoky happy and safe chickens...god bless 💞 🙏
Larger territory for Smokey to patrol by making the fencing adjustments...as she gets older, her attention will change...the rough housing you do with her will be her manner around you and chickens...unfortunately, that is imprinted when you enter her territory. Instead of rough housing, teach her command>>>> Sit, Stay, Come, Down, Wait...she will begin to respond a bit gentler the more training she gets...be patient with her, she still is a happy pup who loves you all.
Now that spring is finally here and sunny days are ahead, it'd be great if you could try and get some good shots of Magneato in full sun and try to show off his beautiful metallic colors. That's what makes those birds so cool.
My Dad called Day Lillies, Out House lillies, Because they grown in amazing abundance all around his Grandmother's farm outhouse. They were thinned and distributed to all family members. Over the years many generations have had Gramma Melissa's Out House Lillies!
I would like to see you get a couple of goats that would definitely distract her a bit, but maybe you could foster the goats along with building the fence to keep Smokey from feeling too dominate. It wouldn't hurt to have a trial run with the goats, I'm down!
Make a larger chicken fenced in area where they have a little space to roam but can’t get out. Give Smokey a bigger area to run around and patrol. Give her a couple goats and sheep to take care of. See how that goes before getting another dog. I got 6 buckets planted!!
Smokey is still a puppy, still growing and learning. Besides, she may need a little more room to run too. Soon that will happen and she will get the hang of it all.
Smokeys a wonderful beautiful dog, but still puppy. Needs to learn all commands you can teach her. More room to run will help. Also provide the distraction of bones and toys. Last option for me too is the dead chicken tied to the neck! It does work though. She's an lgd and more room to patrol at night will help! Good luck and I think yall will do fine. God bless!

Tractor supply has garden poultry dust in a blue and white can...sprinkle it from the back of the head to the tail, around her vent and under her wings. They’re quite common this time of year.
She is young. As long as she doesn’t actually eat the chickens you can get her over it. My border collie/ blue heeler did this too. She is better now that she is older. Adding another dog is going to add more issues, wait it out, add more space and give it time.

If you every move the hog pens to a new spot for them to clean it up use the old areas for your sunflowers. It will be beautiful
RUclipsr Jason Corey has a giant Cane Corso dog. They have a super strong bite. He has a heavy duty large ball that has survived his dog playing with it. Maybe a large rubber ball with a handle could occupy Smokie. Also if you get 2 super big Kongs and fill it with peanut butter that could redirect her attention away from playing with the chickens. You could take her a clean one when you do your chores and take the previous day's one home to clean and prep for the next day. Things like that may give her an outlet for her puppy energy. Just a couple of ideas.
All dogs need training whatever their role in life. All have habits to be encouraged and/or discouraged.Smokey is no different. We have all had to deal with annoying habits. Smokey is now a teenager feeling her way around her world, playful, exerting control. It will pass in time. My pet terrier was let out by visitors. Scruffy played with our egg layers until they stopped running and squawking and flapping wings.. Grand total 18 in one day. Remaining hens highly traumatised. He lived another 15 years. Did not ‘play’ with the hens again.
I don't have personal experience with lgd, but I have watched other channels with lgds. They usually have an older lgd to train a new pup or else they spend a lot of time leash training around livestock in the beginning. For those 2 reasons, I doubt another dog would solve your problem. I totally get the hesitation of fencing in the chickens. Unfortunately, that might be the easiest solution. A couple of goats might give her more to protect and help with the brush. They still wouldn't be playmates for her during this puppy stage though. Guineas will take care of the ticks but they sure are noisy. I watched Off Grid with Doug and Stacy where Stacy was inside the cabin filming, and you could hear the guineas outside the whole video. Make sure Mom and Dad and Mr. Charlie won't mind the noise. No suggestions from me, just some thoughts about each option.
Chad this might help to stop Smokey from mouth rough play with the animals and People. When she puts her mouth on you hold her mouth closed firmly , turn her head and look right into her eyes firmly say NO ! If you keep doing that she'll stop the overexcited mouth play. Hopefully that will be all that you will need. Stay happy, healthy, hydrated and safe. May God continue to bless you and your family.
We had a chicken coop in the fenced yard, and a little chicken tunnel along the fence, made out of chicken wire, so the dog stayed in the yard and the chickens could go out through the fence tunnel to roam the property.
I think she bored as well, she needs something to do. How about goats? Some dwarf goats? She'd have something bigger to play with. And extending her area gives her more room to romp. I'd hold off on a second dog unless goats are not going to work for you. You already know that getting a second dog will have pretty much 2 outcomes they either play together and leave the chickens alone or they both play with the chickens and you will lose even more of them. I gave another idea how about having another older guardian dog mentor her so she learns what she's supposed to do? Much love from So.Cal.💟
I think that giving her more room is a good Idea but giving her a play mate might be the key here it usually takes until they are 18 months to start to calm down so the play mate would probably be the best way to go. But you do you. Just my opinion. God Bless
Calcium deposits on the egg. To really address Smokey's issue. LGD's mature sooooooo slow. So yes, if they don't feel like they have enough work? They can get into trouble. She isn't being a 'chicken killer', so I wouldn't worry about that. She is, as you are saying, just playing too rough and not aware of her size. Now.. another option, won't make you happy. Fence in all the chickens(Magneto included) to a run that Smokey can't get to until she grows up a bit. You could then, without fear get as many birds as you like for that space and know that all will be well. I do agree with expanding her territory. Pyrs can patrol as much as a 3-mile radius. So adding some more area for her might help as well. Do not take her home. You will both be miserable, and you then lose a guardian for the rest of the animals there. Getting her a buddy would be the last choice to make. Just because adding that to your already full plate won't be easy. Skip the goats, again.. no need to add to your plate.
Rig up some toys in the trees that she can grab, pull or jump for in order to play.Try and find something you can rig up that she can chase. Use your imagination. She needs a variety of things to play with.
Try the fence and more roaming room for Smokey. She probably wishes she could tag along with you all day as farm dogs do. Nice you received the grow lights and planter starters and seeds. Enjoy gardening. Chickens and pigs, steers all eat weeds and spoiled produce. They like salad too. Have you thought about the male pig in same yard as Smokey. Goats can be smart and learn to open gates or jump over fence as someone noted. Old dairy couple signing out here. No spirits to guide you. God will help you make right decisions. Lots of us to give advice here.
Just food for thought.. Get a older dog that will train Smokey that her job is to protect the chickens not play with them .... but yet young enough to play with her.
I think the bigger area will help Smokey. I wouldn't cage in Magneto and his girls. He would stress out trying to get out. Have you checked out Justin Rhodes' channel ? He uses forest pigs to clear land. Goats are great too. With extra room, more animals and time, Smokey will settle down. She's still a puppy. Good luck with your decision. God bless !
Have you ever let Smokey play with the beefy boys? Goats are good companions too. They eat and climb on just about anything tho. Maybe a small burro? They are also good at warding off predators.
Chad I think she plays ruff with the chickens, because she plays ruff with you. You have to start training her to calm down, not jump on you and chew on you. Just an observation..I also think more room to patrol would help too. Talk to other LGD owners for some pointers. Enjoy your videos, and I think your boys are amazing. Good luck😍
Have you tried putting a leash on Smoky and taking her into the chicken enclosure? Then you could scold her as she starts the bad behavior. I had an American Bulldog when I was a kid. Pogo absolutely hated cats - with a passion! If a cat came in our yard, you could say goodbye to it. My mom got a kitten. We would scold him when he started toward the kitten many times before he didn’t dare touch it. Funny thing, even after 50 years, I can still close my eyes and see Pogo’s detested, contorted face when the kitten would try to rub on him and curl up for a nap on him.
Great video, can't wait to see what y'all do to finish the project! I'm north of KC and we're getting below freezing temps early Thursday morning, just a suggestion - you may want to cover your day lillies but I'm not sure if they're cold hearty. And I'm bringing in my potatoes buckets just to be safe. Love the farm updates and shenanigans!
My Pyrenees did that to. Bella is a year old now and she has calmed down a lot. Now baby chicks or ducks Bella wants to carry them around. But once the chickens or ducks are grown she don't mess with them now. I think age has the main issue in the chasing and mauling. If you were to get an older trained dog that might teach Smokey. But another young one may cause bigger issues.
Not judging or trying to criticize in any way but my heart hurts for poor lil smoky . That pup has to be so bored and lonely. Dogs need their pack, be it other dogs or their humans. :(
Actually dogs are just fine by them selfs my dog are out in the chickens yard 247 I only interact with them in the morning great dogs I give them big bones to keep them busy during the day then at night they protect
@@stevendoul Yes, DOGS, as in plural, are okay. They need at least one other dog or a human with them. Especially a young pup that is bred to work large borders. Not trying to insult or criticize anyone, it is what it is.
@@carolhanson3893 I am not trying to argue I’m just saying I have one merama dog in with my chickens that is about 100 by 100 and it doesn’t seem to be to bored
Oh yeah, she is way young. It takes about two years for dogs to calm the playfulness so yes more room or another dog to play with will be good, its your dog, do what you think is best. blessings
I agree. I really noticed a change in my my Labrador retriever at about age 2. She still retained her playful puppy side throughout her life but she finally "got" what I expected when she got a bit older. She passed away at age 12 a few years ago. What a great dog she turned out to be! Still miss her. She spoiled me. That breed will always be my favorite... even if dog personalities differ.
My LGD was a brat until she hit two. She's been the best since then. I made sure to discipline her when she killed that chicken and when she attacked the turkey. They steal her feed now. I always give my dogs a second chance and Smokey is just gonna test her limits, good discipline makes a good dog. And try some toys for her. That being said, I am cautiously optimistic at times when I shouldn't be. Just learn from what you've done already and make changes where you need to. I use the seresto collars on all my dogs for fleas and ticks. They are expensive but work really great.
Maybe Smokey needs a “ Stuffy” friend. My Aussie had one and she would toss that thing around. If it got lost we’d have another one to toss in. Keeping her busy and not chasing the chickens. Free ranging the chickens was a lot safer once the chickens came back at night.
Chad, i would get a couple adult goats. They would not only help mow the weeds down but give Smokey someone bigger to guard over but also play with. The first time she gets head bunted she may calm down.
I luv hearing bird song and seeing signs of spring on the farm. Amazing to see all the critters and how you take good care of them. Adding goats will be an adventure 😃. Keep up the good work and enjoy it!
I'm so sorry to hear that Smokey got carried away. I agree with the other's suggestions about a bigger patrol area, and either a couple goats or another dog to play with. It will be helpful to have more than one dog when you find a bigger place to farm anyway. I had no idea that Adler wasn't even 2 yet!! He is so smart, and his speech is so good, I thought he was approaching 3!! Oh, and before I go, don't forget to ask your mom 8f you can cook a couple of the day Lilly buds when they appear. Its only a couple flowers, and it won't hurt the plant one bit because you are just picking a couple buds. I don't think she will mind if you ask first. And they are so tasty, I bet you will want to plant some in your garden! If you do it, I'd love to watch you taste them on a video. It could be an Adler Farm to Table show, lol 😆
I've got 6 Toulouse eggs in a nest now. Hope she hatches them. Some might be mixed with a male sebastopol. (Fancy pants)💖🤗 God Bless ya'll. Hope you're gonna have bacon seeds, they are reall
Ticks are really bad here in Iowa and we were colder than heck. It doesn't kill the ticks off. You may have to separate Smokey from the chickens. Make sure she cannot get to them. Hopefully she won't mess with the goats.
lol well I can't speak for anyone else, yet of course I would leave your eggs alone on top of the turkey pen. For one thing, I'm not in the same state, and for another, I'm vertically challenged and wouldn't be able to reach them. That is really cool how your parents move the flowers with them, it's a beautiful legacy to share with the kids.
She will focus on the goats, especially if they kid. Good luck with breaking the chicken loss due to her puppy stage. Nice listening to the nature. God bless and stay safe 🙏❤💙
Definitely add the extra room for Smokey. Might try swapping which pens the turkeys and the chickens are in, at least until Smokey is a bit older. I have a feeling Mr T would teach Smokey to respect birds a bit more!
Hopefully spring will bring us all some healthy kits! Well if what I’m doing ends up working I’ll take credit. If it fails and Smokey ends up killing them all Kevin at HH taught me everything I know about LGD’s 😂!
How far can you expand her perimeter? Daisy and Mojo and even Bear have a lot of roaming area. Maybe she just need more space to guard and run a bit. Or some small goats for her to guard.
Got my shirt in the mail today I love it, thank you it would have been better if you had either stickers or a patch. Love to see your boys they are great you should be very proud of them they are going to be fantastic men thank you for how you are raising them. Thanks for another great video stay safe and god bless
I am not an expert on LGDs, but mine will be two in May of this year. He has killed chickens because of playing too rough. He hasn't killed my goats, but he does play too rough with them as well SO I do not let him with the chickens or goats without me being home to supervise. He is calming down, but not enough to be in the same pen with them unsupervised. That being said, I need to also point out that my goats are the smaller nigerian dwarfs and not the larger goats. During the day, my dog is in his pen (which is connected to the chicken and goat pens). I do, however, have another dog with him most of the time while I'm at work. This is just what I do, and I wouldn't advise someone to get another dog if they don't even want a second, third, or fourth dog. :)
I think extending the property where she has more to run and more to explore might keep her more entertained and put the goats over there where they can run and keep the grass down I think that's a good idea to do that first that's just my opinion it really comes down to what you feel is best anyway ♥️
I have 2 LGD's, Smokey looks like my Sophie. Sophie one time held a duck down and I caught her before she over played the duck and killed it. She is now 2+ years old and has never harmed another since. She also has her sister to play with. The Kangal in her is highly intelligent. She will learn.
Oh those ticks can survive the cold weather. I live where it's cold under 30 degrees 6 months of the year and every spring have to treat for ticks on my dogs and spray the lawn
Mostly, Smokey needs to grow up. But, as another said, discourage her from playing too rough with you and everyone else. Discourage her from putting her mouth on you, that's a bad habit. If she learns she has to be gentle with you, her humans, she should translate that to being gentle with her animal family. She's a good, smart dog. As she matures she will calm down. Until then, encourage better habits from everyone. Look at how gentle Mojo is. No one roughhouses with him, it is discouraged. More exercise, some time, gentle play...all good.
I have a cat who has always learnt our pets our family and she protects them (yeah she wanted to eat the hamsters but everything else including budgies she was friends with) she protects our chickens and even slept 18 hours in a small coop with two roosters and they were fine not a feather out of place, she’s 15 years old now 😢were thinking of getting another to protect our poultry xx
2 goats and train Smokey with chickens. As someone says Weed and Reap training their pup to the animals. Would be worth the time. to try. Cut the wood for a fire pit lol.
Love that you put ... Your dad taking your saw .. 💕💕

Make a larger chicken fenced in area where they have a little space to roam but can’t get out. Give Smokey a bigger area to run around and patrol. Give her a couple goats and sheep to take care of. See how that goes before getting another dog.

Lots of us to give advice here.
option 2 I would not get another dog until you have a live on farm two dogs unsupervised could become a hunting pair
Smokey and the goats will become friends
This is true
It's fun to see the older videos Kevin at Hidden Heights made of his Great Pyrenees Bear and the baby goats playing on him.
Heading to Springfield, MO next month to visit family. They said I needed to visit the aquarium. So funny cause the next day I see your video.
You can't leave Springfield without hitting up Bass Pro. Spend a weekend there, because it will take that long to see it all lol
@@JackieGreen71 my step mom works at Bass Pro headquarters 😃. Already planned 2 days at Bass pro doing some steroids shopping and visit the Aquarium.
@@jolene1718 Yay!
My aunt has day lilies that my Granny had at her house. My Granny passed away in 1993 and they’re still going strong.
Just love how you keep it real. Look pass the mess. It has a hot plate to keep the soil warm.
Just food for thought.. Get a older dog that will train Smokey that her job is to protect the chickens not play with them .... but yet young enough to play with her.
YES, an experienced older dog would be PERFECT
I think the bigger area will help Smokey. I wouldn't cage in Magneto and his girls. He would stress out trying to get out. Have you checked out Justin Rhodes' channel ? He uses forest pigs to clear land. Goats are great too. With extra room, more animals and time, Smokey will settle down. She's still a puppy. Good luck with your decision. God bless !
Have her where she can get to the beefy boys that would help her. She needs a little extra work. Smokey is such a good girl.
I love Smokey!❤❤❤❤Such a gorgeous baby! Get her an older, smaller dog so she won't be lonely.🙂
Good luck😍
I like the lane idea, and maybe some goats in the lane . Would that be possible? 😉Just an idea!
Have you ever thought of getting a guard goose? Justin Rhodes has them and had great success with them guarding their chickens. Just a thought🤗
He's got a great channel too on YT.
His & Adler Farms - 2 favorites.
It takes about two years for dogs to calm the playfulness so yes more room or another dog to play with will be good, its your dog, do what you think is best. blessings
Appreciate ya
When you get the fence up you need to get a couple of goats. That would be good for Smokey. You need a small basket to touch your eggs in.
I would fence a bigger piece of land and build an enclosed chick shack!
I love long or short videos because it’s you chad and your family and all the animals.
PS Dogs can be trained about staying safe if snakes are around too. Luv Smokey💛❤️
Everything looks clean and the chicks are beautiful!!
Case ur doing a excellent job buddy ..good luck on all ur seeds..god bless 💞 🙏
I've got 6 Toulouse eggs in a nest now. Hope she hatches them. Some might be mixed with a male sebastopol. (Fancy pants)💖🤗 God Bless ya'll. Hope you're gonna have bacon seeds, they are reall
Really cute to watch & play with.
Ticks are really bad here in Iowa and we were colder than heck. It doesn't kill the ticks off. You may have to separate Smokey from the chickens. Make sure she cannot get to them. Hopefully she won't mess with the goats.
Thats awesome. The heat mat.
I love your ideas about 🚜
I love the sounds of nature especially from a farm but I could never be a Farmer’s wife I would want to keep all the animals. 😂
lol well I can't speak for anyone else, yet of course I would leave your eggs alone on top of the turkey pen. For one thing, I'm not in the same state, and for another, I'm vertically challenged and wouldn't be able to reach them. That is really cool how your parents move the flowers with them, it's a beautiful legacy to share with the kids.
Is it better to start sunflowers like you did, or just put them in the ground?
Either or. I started them indoors bc we have a freeze warning tonight.
Ok, thanx
She will focus on the goats, especially if they kid. Good luck with breaking the chicken loss due to her puppy stage. Nice listening to the nature. God bless and stay safe 🙏❤💙
Definitely add the extra room for Smokey. Might try swapping which pens the turkeys and the chickens are in, at least until Smokey is a bit older. I have a feeling Mr T would teach Smokey to respect birds a bit more!
We haven’t had the best luck with rabbits lately but I think your on to something with warmer weather 👍🏼 We will need all the tips on training a LGD
Hopefully spring will bring us all some healthy kits!
Well if what I’m doing ends up working I’ll take credit. If it fails and Smokey ends up killing them all Kevin at HH taught me everything I know about LGD’s 😂!
@@DossFarm 😂
Dad said "Let me show you how its done son" - lol Go Dad.
I have 2 LGD's, Smokey looks like my Sophie. Sophie one time held a duck down and I caught her before she over played the duck and killed it. She is now 2+ years old and has never harmed another since. She also has her sister to play with. The Kangal in her is highly intelligent. She will learn.
How far did you get on the fence.
Oh those ticks can survive the cold weather.
I live where it's cold under 30 degrees 6 months of the year and every spring have to treat for ticks on my dogs and spray the lawn
It was -17 here. It’s never been that cold here. I guarantee the numbers are down.
@@DossFarm numbers are down for sure but there still around.
The 30 degrees was the high reps for six months
Love Springfield MO great town
Mostly, Smokey needs to grow up. But, as another said, discourage her from playing too rough with you and everyone else. Discourage her from putting her mouth on you, that's a bad habit. If she learns she has to be gentle with you, her humans, she should translate that to being gentle with her animal family. She's a good, smart dog. As she matures she will calm down. Until then, encourage better habits from everyone. Look at how gentle Mojo is. No one roughhouses with him, it is discouraged. More exercise, some time, gentle play...all good.
Totally agree💯%👍
I have a cat who has always learnt our pets our family and she protects them (yeah she wanted to eat the hamsters but everything else including budgies she was friends with) she protects our chickens and even slept 18 hours in a small coop with two roosters and they were fine not a feather out of place, she’s 15 years old now 😢were thinking of getting another to protect our poultry xx
2 goats and train Smokey with chickens. As someone says Weed and Reap training their pup to the animals. Would be worth the time. to try. Cut the wood for a fire pit lol.
😎
I want some Ayam Cemani chickens. I love Magneto.
I love daylilies! Mine didn’t make it here in Texas after that horrible winter vortex
I didn’t know anything would kill a day lily. Lived in Michigan for years, and nothing ever hurt them.
You could make Hos a scratcher with astroturf and something to staple it to
The extention of the fence and a few goats for him to play with and have for company for him. See how that goes. :)
Awe I love Smokey no advise from me.
😂 appreciate ya!
Good afternoon from Georgia
I think you should enlarge the fence and get a weather.
