Hello Tia: Story behind the song! (I translated this to English)
(C) Tuomas Holopainen: " I would have been willing to pick this up from the Dark Passion Play album as a single, if the singer hadn’t just changed( Tarja ----> Anette 2006). A Celtic song that Marko played a couple of years before, in the back room. Saying it would properly not sit for his band, Tarot. It flashed through my mind, this song is about a lighthouse keeper by the way. So Marko finished the song, and I did the words. Little Elegia, a poetic song, about a lone lighthouse keeper. And no symbolism, for once, direct storytelling. This song is what we can play in gigs acoustically ”.

Troy is the guy who was playing the flute...you can hear him sing a little on My Walden live at Tampere, or the acoustic version of How’s the Heart. Another good song with Marko on lead vocals is While Your Lips Are Still Red live at Wembley.

The song was composed by Marko himself. Tuomas once heard Marko playing the song in a back room, saying the song doesn't fit his own band Tarot. So Tuomas thought it could be a Nightwish song. Tuomas wrote the lyrics to it.

@@derekfalconberg3481 yes it is! As soon as Tuomas entered the back room and heard the melody, the image of a lonely lighthouse keeper came to his mind and so this song was born... can you even imagine what would have happened if that day Tuomas didn't enter that room?

listen to Marko's solo stuff. "stones", "Star, Sand and Shadow" or "Death March for Freedom" if possible the live versions. I saw Marko live in February, super great Singer!!!
What a fantastic reaction. I couldn't stop smiling throughout this reaction and even watched it twice because it was such a joy to see the happiness on your face when Marco started to sing. And yes Troy is their third vocalist, but normally he only provides some harmonies to Floor and Marco in their older songs. However, on the new album Human :||: Nature he gets a bit more attention and even takes the lead in the song "Harvest" and you can hear him on "Shoemaker" too. The whole CD 1 of this 2 CD album is about Humanity while the second CD is about nature and has no vocals. If you decide to react to it, I would suggest that you do CD 1 of the new album in order, starting with the first song "Music", then "Noise", "Shoemaker", "Harvest", "Pan", How's the Heart", "Procession", "Tribal", and "Endlessness" (Marko has the lead vocals in this). It feels a bit like Tuomas wanted to say a hidden "Thank you Floor for saving Nightwish" with this album, because there are some references to Floor and if you pay attention you can find them. This is what I found: In the first song the lyrics speak of "joining the gathering" which could be interpreted as a hint to Floors early career, because she started to sing metal when she heard the band "The Gathering" with Anneke van Giersbergen. The second verse of "How's the Heart" is dedicated to Floor and her family (husband Hannes and daughter Freja). There is a great acoustic version of "How's the Heart" with Floor and Troy for Planet Rock, that you should check out. Also in the "Procession"-video a book is shown with a dutch title, check the title on google translate.
My personal interpretations of the meanings of the songs are:
- "Music" - music as a living entity tells the story how it met the human kind.
- "Noise" - the noise we receive from social media that distracts us from the beauty of the real world and holds us trapped in addiction.
- "Shoemaker" - this is quite obvious a tribute to a great scientist (Eugene Shoemaker, check his story on Wikipedia), Tuomas is kind of a science nerd.
- "Harvest" - Death is coming for all of us and we should make the best with the time we have while living.
- "Pan" - I don't have an interpretation on this one.
- "How's the Heart" - show compassion to other people, even if you don't know them.
- "Procession" - a plea to pay more attention to all the other living beings on this planet. The song tells about evolution of life from the perspective of a future species which comes long after humans got extinct.
- "Tribal" - Humanity seperated into different tribes by religions, competing with each other.
- "Endlessness" - don't have an interpretation on this one yet.
You are really starting to see all of the different styles this amazing band is capable of doing. Just so talented. If was big fun to watch it with you and to see your reaction. Definitely want to see more of you lovely lady! Love your unbridled enthusiasm for beautiful music. Peace.
Marco has been a lead vocalist in his own band Tarot since 1986. Watch Tarot " Crows Fly Back " from the Undead Indeed live special. Or watch the 1986 video for Tarot " Wings of Darkness " . Get to see a young , big 80s hair Marco.
I just love it when Marko and Floor sing together! And then when Troy joins in, the three of them together are out of this world. Have you checked out anything from their new album? Troy does a lot more singing there. He takes the lead in Harvest, and How's the Heart, Music and Endlessness (another Marko song!) have amazing harmonies.
In the late 80s Marco was probably one of the best singers in the metal circus, so there is a reason why he is so good.
He is like the grand old man in finnish metal, and have collaberated with a numerous of bands...
Great musican too and is next to Troy the most diverse handling a numerous of different instruments.

Epica - Sancta Terra has great Harmonies between their singer, Simone and Floor who is a guest. They have been friends for years and the chemistry + harmonies they have are awesome.

Troy was the flute player in this! He's a multi-instrumentalist. I recommend The Carpenter live at Buenos Aires. I'm gonna recommend a song that most people don't do because there is no live version of it because it's so emotional. Marco and Floor sings in it. It's called Our Decades in the Sun.

They are so great together in many, many songs their vocals just work so well.. and Troy can join in and sing as well, he was busy playing the pipe on this one so he wasn't able to sing too.
Floor looks genuinely happy with Marko's performance. At the end I noticed she looked over at Tuomas and gave a subtle nod.

When it comes to Marco's singing, you absolutely need to check out his solo album as well, start with "The Voice of my Father" or the original Finnish version "Isäni ääni". (The Finnish version imo sounds a little better and with slightly more feeling in it, but as the song deserves us understanding the lyrics as well, the English one has an advantage there. And both are beautiful, it's hard to decide. Maybe just... react to both if you like, haha ♥) You won't regret it!

Most commentors seem to forget "The Carpenter" at Buenos Aires 2018 (or the Decades tour) where Troy sings the lead. Originally, Tuomas sang the lead. It took 20 years and Troy to join the band for fans to hear the song live.

If you want more Marko, (new) Marko has a solo album that just came out in 2019. Marko (older stuff) as lead vocals for a band called Tarot. It's fascinating to watch his vocal progression from the 80s until today.

The newbassist is from the band Kai came from so I'm sure he's good. Can he match Markos vocals? Time will tell.
Thanks for shouting out the drummers. So few reactors do that but the work involved in drumming for Nightwish is phenomenal and they've been great at it.

Troy also does backing vocals for Floor on the acoustic versions of How's The Heart and Nemo.

This was the second NW song I've ever heard and still is one of my favourites.
If you want to listen to Troy you need to visit their new album. There's no live versions (yet) of Troy singing on his own. Go listen to Nightwish - Harvest (lyric video), which is is a song on which he's the lead. There's an acoustic version of another song from that album, How's the Heart, where Troy plays guitar and harmonizes with Floor (do the lyric video first, then the acoustic version). Also he sings the chorus in the song "Shoemaker" from the new album (epic song, but lookup Eugene Shoemaker online before you listen to that one as it's a homage to a real person).

Near the end of this song I always get a tight feeling in my chest. For a long time I thought it was the strong emotions I was feeling, but I just realized that I haven't taken a breath since the song started. This is what Nightwish does to you.

This is the first song Troy Donockley played on. As a contact studio musician. They put him in the video as the Piper you see toward the end of the video. He and Tuomas hit it off so well. That Tuomas wrote more music to include the various musical instruments that Troy plays. With him slowly over time becoming a full time member of the band. Another Marco written and sung song is 'While your lips are still red'. The live at Wembley, is the best version.

Troy is a wonderful musician playing multiple instruments & he does harmonies on many of their songs.
For Troy singing more try My Walden, Hows the Heart acoustic version with Floor, or a different kind of track off their newest album where Troy is lead in Harvest.

Yes, Marco is very good, and very versatile! The Islander is very nice, but a more impressive vocal performance from Marco can be heard in the Nightwish cover of the Pink Floyd song "High Hopes". It is an outstanding cover, and it's all Marco. It also shows off Emppu - the guitarist. He is very skilled too, but rarely gets to really shine.
(Oh, and Troy is the guy who was playing the flute in this one - he mainly plays woodwinds, and I think he was a great addition to the band!)

So if you want to hear Troy as a lead, then you have to listen a song Harvest, from Nightwish's new album: Human. :II: Nature. Only studio versions now, because album was released last spring and there's now live shows during this time... But, then Nightwish released official lyric videos for all the songs from the album. Except Noise, but that one has a "real" video.

He had BETTER have a good voice! He's in one of the top bands in the world and he does backing vocals. But seriously, he has been a rock/ metal vocalist since he was seventeen years old. There is a video floating around YT that compares his voice as he has aged, up to 2017. Oh, there are SO MANY MORE Nightwish songs to go through! But this one is definitely different than most of the rest of the catalogue. Nightwish covers SO MANY genres though, which makes them top-tier, actually able to play anything!

I had recommended "High Hopes", but thinking back I think this is the perfect song to learn to know Marco as solo singer. That way you can enjoy High Hopes even more, because High Hopes is the King of songs by Marco.

I fully agree with Coyote below, you have to react to Marco doing the Pink Floyd cover of High Hopes. Who in their right mind would do a Pink Floyd cover. Marco now owns this song as far as I am concerned.
