La place de Lalo constitue l’un des ponts jetés dans la musique française entre la disparition de Berlioz, qu’il connaîtra fugitivement sur le tard (Berlioz le cite en 1865 parmi ses « virtuoses favoris »), et l’avènement de Debussy. Au plan de l’inspiration également.
La Symphonie espagnole, l’ouvrage qui fera le plus pour la renommée du musicien, hérite à n’en pas douter d’Harold en Italie. Les deux symphonies conjuguent la part d’un instrument principal, l’alto pour l’œuvre de Berlioz et le violon pour celle de Lalo, tout en évitant l’appellation - et les tics - du concerto. Avec pareillement l’évocation de contrées de la Méditerranée propices au dépaysement, à l’imaginaire, à la nostalgie : l’Italie dans un cas, l’Espagne dans l’autre. Sachant que le musicien lillois descendait doublement, côtés paternel et maternel, d’un lignage espagnol établi aux Pays-Bas depuis les temps lointains de Charles Quint. De là aussi le sentiment à la fois héroïque et robuste que l’on a cru déceler dans sa musique, et tout particulièrement dans sa Symphonie.
Outre la participation d’un soliste, la symphonie tranche aussi par son découpage : en cinq mouvements, peu habituels au genre symphonique, et moins encore à celui concertant. C’est ici encore à Berlioz que l’on songe, mais cette fois à celui de la Symphonie fantastique. Lalo était lui-même un violoniste de talent (comme le rappelle Berlioz). De son goût pour l’instrument et de sa rencontre avec Pablo de Sarasate, gloire du violon s’il en est en ce temps, et de surcroît issu d’un pays qui ne pouvait que susciter son imagination, est née la Symphonie espagnole. À la croisée de plusieurs inspirations. Le premier mouvement débute par de grands accords intenses de l’orchestre, aussitôt enchaînés à un thème du violon d’égale profondeur, passionné sous la virtuosité et entrecoupé des sautes brutales des reprises orchestrales.
Un autre motif thématique pourrait emprunter à une mélodie espagnole, assez diffuse toutefois, entrechoquée d’évocations du premier thème en rythmes dansants (de séguedilles ?). La couleur espagnole se fait encore plus caractérisée pour le Scherzando, commencé par des pizzicatos des cordes en grattements de guitare, pour laisser place à l’entremêlement d’un violon aux teintes d’aubade au-dessus d’une jota sautillante de l’orchestre. C’est à Debussy que l’on songe, celui à venir d’Ibéria. Dans l’Intermezzo, de puissants accords en récitatifs de l’orchestre conduisent à une habanera du violon, que des tutti bousculent par endroits.
L’Andante pénètre dans un autre climat, en forme de sombre choral, sur une mélodie au souffle large du violon accompagnée d’un orchestre cuivré, toujours dans le bas du registre. L’inspiration prend ici son envol, redescendue pour finir par trois imperceptibles accords conclusifs des cordes (d’orchestre et du soliste). Des appels en forme de 7 tintements lointains d’orchestre, puis plus rapprochés, donnent l’entrée au soliste pour le passage le plus virtuose qui lui est dévolu. Le mouvement Rondo se poursuit par une malagueña déhanchée qui réunit le couple soliste et orchestre, avant une reprise aérienne et festive du passage initial.

The delicate shifts in the tutti section at 0:46-0:49 from who I can only guess is the concert master are so delectable with just a slight gliss . They are so consistent with how Hadelich plays. I needed to re-watch to make sure it wasn’t him playing along with the orchestra.

I've heard many great performances of this, but I don't think I've heard one as rhythmically precise & clean as this. His shifting is also as smooth as Vengerov.

The first movement of my fiddle part is covered in blue pencil markings earnestly thrashed in by my teacher when I made my teenside attempt at this music.. These marking look so aggressive and brash that I have avoided these dots ever since. I bet Augustin has nearly virgin scripts his talent is so profuse and fluent. As usual he makes everything sound so convincing. Just great!
There was an interview where they briefly showed Augustins score (I think it was Paganini) and apart from fingering and bowings there was hardly any writing in it.

I confirm it, currently Hadelich is the best violin soloist, nobody beats him, PERFECTION AND PURITY.
You might be right. For all the hype surrounding Hilary Hahn (much of it deserved - the woman has dedicated her life to the instrument and performs on a level few will ever reach), but Augustin - this is another level.

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieses spätromantischen und ethnisch komponierten Konzerts mit seidigem doch gut phrasiertem Ton der genialen Solovioline sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen der anderen Instrumente. Der zweite Satz klingt echt lebhaft und auch melodisch. Im kontrast klingt der vierte Satz echt lyrisch und auch tröstend. Der intelligente und ebenso geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester in verschiedenen Tempi und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Wundervoll vom Anfang bis zum Ende!
Die "geniale Solovioline" ist die im März 2020 von Tarisio an Augustin Hadelich ausgeliehene "Leduc" Guarneri-del-Gesù von 1745, die bis zum Jahre 1988 vom legendären Henryk Szeryngk gespielt wurde. Wie Hadelich sie zum Klingen bringt, ist ein Fest. Weltklasse. Das Dirigat des WDR Chefdirigenten, hier in Paris als Gast, empfinde ich eher rustikal, seine Augen sind leider meistens in der Partitur versunken, anstatt im Kontakt zum fabelhaften Orchestre Philharmonique.

Only a handful soloists play the correct rhythms that are so central and important in Spanish music. Rachel Barton Pine, Chee-Yun, and Augustine Hadelich. Everyone else tries to musicalise this concerto so much that the Spanish dance rhythms- be it hanera, tarantella- get lost or distorted.

Before, I hadn't been that worried - but after watching how perfectly Hadelich plays this and how pure his tuning is, I'm now practicing 24/7 in worry. What I'm trying to say? Symphonie espagnole is one of the most beautiful show pieces ever composed. every second of it has a beautiful original melody. hundreds of melodies in 30min music. miraculous genius.
Augustin has a clean, delicate and incredibly sweet sound, but he doesn't capture a lot of great moments. I hope to see better days of him.
