  • A couple settings you can use to keep your Sony X700 or X800 4K player running smoothly when playing 4K discs. Some Sony users have reported freezing and skipping during playback of 4K discs. This tutorial addresses that issue.
    The settings discussed in this video are courtesy of Cody Dively @codydively9017 -- Big thanks to Cody for sharing these on Facebook. For more information (and more settings), see the link below... The only link I have right now is for a private Facebook group, which you will need to join in order to see this post. Note: This is an extension of a previous Back to Basics installment (#2), where I discussed why brand new 4K discs are freezing and skipping. This video is intended to be a supplement to that presentation, found here: • Why Are New 4K Discs F...

    I've got the X700, and it has always worked fine... With the exception of several 4k discs. I've wiped them, checked for scratches... All of that.
    And still had problems with freezing in the same places on my 4k discs. I was just about ready to spend several hundred dollars on a more expensive player, when I started searching and found this video.
    I followed the steps and reset my player as directed per this video.
    And now the problem is solved! Unbelievable that it would be something so easy to fix.
    Thank you so much for sharing.👍

      Good. What you just said actually shows that the problem is with the discs and not with the player. Any time an issue happens "at the exact same spot" on a disc, you can rest assured that the disc is the problem and not the player. Every time the player hits that defect in the disc, it hangs/crashes. There is error correction code built into these players but if the data stream coming off of the disc is too corrupted (for any reason) there is a limit to what ANY player can do about that.

    I have to add my thanks to this video for finally resolving the freezing issues I was experiencing with my X800M2 player. Prior to watching it a few weeks ago, nearly every disc (4K, Blu Ray and even DVD) was freezing about 3/4 of the way through watching, which seriously detracted from the viewing experience. In fact, it wound me up so much that I seriously considered getting a new player.
    Thankfully, the guidance in this video fixed the problem. Many, many thanks.

    Australian viewer here, thanks heaps for those settings tips! I have a Sony UBP X-700 player and these freezing issues happen from time to time on some discs. I understand it does pay to clean new 4k discs with a microfibre cloth before playing because residue from the manufacturing process is left behind - but I'm positive now it's the settings. I know for sure on my player, that 4k upscale is ON and Cinema conversion mode is AUTO, so I'll be changing those pronto! Your tips are much appreciated. James

    Thank you Fuzz Just bought a Sony 42inch Oled tv and a sony X700 4K player was having so many problems with a lot of 4K discs this has been a blessing to know, In Australia we don't really have the problem that I hear you have in the states with your 4K discs must be were their manufactured as well this really should not happen in this day and age when you pay so much for these 4K movies. In Australia prices for these discs are crazy and we don't really get many special features on these discs as well, but I am so glad for amazing people such as your self to help us 4K movie lovers to better experience this amazing format.

      Thanks for watching and weighing in! I think part of the problem is that there's just a lot more information crammed onto a 4K disc than we ever got with blu-ray or dvd. So I think the density of data on the disc makes the technology a little more quirky in general, which is what I mean when I say 4K is not a perfect technology. Most of the time, I don't really have problems. But little glitches can still happen from time to time, even under the best conditions... just due to the nature of the tech.

    I also have the X700. One other thing on the screen settings for those of you that have Dolby Vision capability on their TVs, and for 4K discs that have the dolby vision option (not just regular HDR): You must select "Dolby Vision Output" to On. The X700 does not automatically switch to this mode if the 4K disc has that capability. Along the same lines, you must turn the Dolby Vision setting Off on all regular blu ray discs; and also turn it Off on 4K discs that only have regular HDR encoding.

      I have never seen an issue and have done extensive back and forth to make sure. I have read that Dolby Vision is backward compatible and with it having wider capability why would it do anything bad to the source? You don't have to turn HDR 10+ off. Just don't see the point. Even stuff like The Dollars trilogy or Night of the Living dead with no HDR has zero problems with it.

    • @tchpse1
      @tchpse1 6 месяцев назад +2

      The information I conveyed is a summary from the experts at the Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player Owners group. They go into this many times: "Turn Dolby vision on only for dolby vision movies." "For [regular] blu rays and DVDs, dolby vision output should always be off as it makes image darker and causes retention and compression artifacting causing much worse image quality."

    • @azarelthecreator7098
      @azarelthecreator7098 6 месяцев назад +3

      i learned this when i turned dolby vision on when i first got it and had no image on the discs i was putting in. My intuition told me it must have been the dolby vision setting i turned on and when i turned it off that was confirmed. Now i just turn it on before i pop in a dolby vision disc.

    Great suggestion but I'll only be changing these settings when I'm having trouble with a 4k disc, because I just tested these settings out on a DVD and the upscaling was iffy and the cinema conversion mode set to video was causing frame drops every once in a while. BTW I recommend 4k upscaling Auto2 for anyone using a TV brand other than Sony. These settings do make standard DVDs look a lot better.

      @@damonappel My apologies, I didn't realize that anybody would be waiting with bated breath for an update on my RUclips comment. I figured anybody with reason to be invested in whether this works or not would be somebody who owns this machine and would likewise be capable of testing for themselves. In my case, I'm embarrassed to admit that in the two months since I changed the settings, I haven't had a whole lot of time to sit down and watch many 4K discs from start to finish (as would be required to properly test, since the freezing-in my case, anyway-typically occurs only after extended playback of a 4K disc). I travel a lot for work and am often away from home for weeks at a time. For what it's worth, I have found time to watch three blu ray releases and they all played without issue. But I don't think standard blu rays were particularly problematic in the first place-only 4K discs to my recollection.
      When I have the opportunity and the inclination to watch a movie that I have on 4K disc, I will report back. But even then, I wouldn't be convinced the issue is completely resolved until I'm able to get through a few without incident. With my overwhelming schedule, that could even mean a couple more months. By then, I'm sure you could test for yourself if you have any real reason to know whether this works or not. Or I guess you could just continue trolling RUclips, posting snarky comments with emoji like a bratty teenager. Whatever works for you.

    I still have a relatively small 4k collection. About 80 discs compared to about 500 blu rays. Out of those 80, I've had issues with about a dozen. With blu ray, I think I had an issue with 2 tops.
    With that in mind, I'm to the point of just sticking with blu ray. They just work. I think the bulk of 4k issues comes down to quality control on the manufacturers part.

Going to try through USB when I get a chance. I haven't seen anyone with this problem.Had a similar issue with my firs X700 and the whole system seemed to brick. Might upgrade to an X800M2. I'd switch to Samsung but want to keep Dolby Vision.

    I read that after you update the software, shut off all things wifi/network related. It is my understanding that there's really no need for internet connectivity while playing a disc, and it's this constant type of connectivity that may cause freezing & skipping as well. I believe doing this has helped out a lot for me. I'm also now going to use your suggestions as well to hopefully fully eliminate the issue.

    You were right when you said I was opening up a can of worms by getting into 4K BluRays. I’ve watched other videos of yours and I’ve ordered “2001: A Space Odyssey” as per your recommendation of it being a great 4K transfer. It should come from Amazon on Saturday with my replacement for “Back to the Future” the ultimate trilogy and “American Graffiti”.
    I’ll have to watch my money spending now for sure.
    I won’t replace every DVD or Blu Ray in my collection of about 1000 movies with 4K versions, but I’ll definitely try to get most of my favorites in 4k. And, I’ll be looking at the 4k’s price vs the Blu Ray price when I buy anything new now.
    There aren’t many 21st century movies that I like anyway. It’s a short list for sure. My favorite movies and tv shows are those from the 1950’s to the early 2000s. Nothing on network tv is worth watching anymore. For me, the best movie made in the last 20 years is “Top Gun: Maverick”. I already have the BluRay, but I might be ordering both Top Gun movies in 4k someday.

      You say you won’t replace older movies, but you will. lol. I think I bought ten 4K’s this week. I just upgraded to a Sony TV a couple weeks ago from a Vizio M series 4k and now I am experiencing 4K Blu-ray in a whole new light. Can’t believe I used that Vizio for so many years.
      Pretty sure Sony has me as a customer for life now.

      @@dishsoap1 You’re right! I have ordered the three “Man with No Name” Clint Eastwood westerns this week. This makes about 12 4K movies I’ve bought since getting the new Sony X700. These are some of my favorites so I’m not surprised that I bought them. It’s those movies I bought over 20 years ago and probably only watched once or twice that I don’t think need to be replaced with 4Ks. My Sony X700 with my Philips 4K TV upgrades the picture for a regular DVD good enough for them.

    I just finished watching a new 4K Blackhawk Down. I cleaned it before the first play. Even though it came from Amazon in a destroyed case and was loose inside the case, it played fine in my Sony X700M. All I had to do was customize the case insert to fit in a regular DVD case. I don’t mind that, since the 4K disc is not damaged by shipping.
    It’s now become a habit to clean every disc before playing, whatever the format.

    The upscale setting, you'd think that would only affect non-4k discs but it's almost always 4k discs that freeze for me..
    People say it must be the disc but it's not. The discs are always brand new and even though they tend to skip on the same moment in the film, if you put the disc in and go straight to the scene, it works fine, but if you watch the film from the beginning, it skips when you get to that moment.
    That wouldn't happen if the problem was with the disc.
    I've even had it where a brand new, clean 4k disc goes onto the player, freezes on the first watch and somehow comes out the disc tray with a scratch..
    It's also why bought my current player from a physical shop and got a care and repair plan. Now I have someone to go to if there are significant issues.
    Anyway, I have Just set my player to these settings and we'll see how it goes.
    Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated.

      Turn off Auto 1 (and Auto 2) and leave this feature set to off.

    Back again my man!
    Just bought a 55 inch TCL C83K Mini led 4k TV and I'm gobsmacked by it!
    Never had a TV bigger than a 43 so it's huge in my smallish living room!
    Have you heard much love for this TCL in the states?
    I'm new to TV's on this level.
    I bought it new for £640 which is a steal imo.
    I bought this Sony blu ray featured in this video on your recommendation and I love it.
    Took your advice and I don't upscale as the TV does a great job itself.
    Does this Sony blu ray handle HDR10+ ?
    My new TV can so I'm hoping this blu ray does too. If not at least it has Dolby vision.
    Watched the Revenant 4k on my new giant TV and my jaw dropped!!
    I'm very impressed in my standard blu ray upscale though so only a selective few will be upgraded to 4k!
    Your reviews help me with that choice!
    Also should I keep brightness at 100 on my TV or set it at 70 ( as I have but kept HDR brightness at 100 ) as I've heard 4k TV screens last longer when not set at 100 brightness....any truth in that?
    Love my Sony soundbar too.
    Deals with atmoss and DTS but obviously can't compare to a proper speaker set up but it's miles better than the TV speakers.
    Hope you're well mate

      The Sony 4K player does not have HDR10+ capabilities, because HDR10+ is a proprietary HDR format created by Samsung (because they didn't want to pay Sony for the Dolby Vision license). So HDR10+ was created as a direct competitor to Sony's Dolby Vision. But for what it's worth, I wouldn't worry too much about HDR10+. There actually aren't very many titles that even use HDR10+ -- most 4K discs use either DV or just HDR10. Only a relative handful of all the 4K discs on the market even use HDR10+. And from what I understand, Dolby Vision is the better HDR format of the two, so if you have the choice between using both, I would opt for DV. I have a Samsung TV (which uses HDR10+), but I hardly ever even use the HDR10+ functionality. I've got my own custom settings that I prefer.
      As for the brightness of the TV, yeah I've also heard some people say turning up the brightness too high can reduce the life of the TV. I have no idea if that's true or not, but I'm not convinced that it really is that big of a problem. I can tell you that I'm someone who actually prefers very bright image... and I imagine some home theater enthusiasts/gear hounds would cringe if they saw the settings I keep my TV and player on LMAO! And my 75-inch Samsung 4K TV is still going strong with no issues after about 5 years. So I say just experiment with the settings and go with whatever settings look best to you. BTW, you can also further adjust the brightness, contrast, colors, etc. on your Sony player. When you're playing a movie, just hit the "Options" button on your Sony remote, and it will bring up the option for video playback settings, where you can further tweak the image.
      Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying your new TV and player! Welcome to the wonderful world of 4K! Great to hear from you... hope you're doing well too.

    4K players and TVs are down right addictive! I bought my Sony X700M and now I can’t stop buying 4K BluRays half-priced on Amazon. I’ve got seven more coming from three different orders this month. The prices have been ridiculously low for some of my favorite movies. It may not take long to find most, if not all of my favorites on 4K. I’m still buying regular BluRays for the not so favorite movies. Example: I’m replacing my DVD-R of “Poltergeist” with a new BluRay, but I must have “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” in 4K now. “Smokey and the Bandit” has been a favorite since it was first released in theatres, so now I must have it in 4K. How deep is this “rabbit hole” I’ve dived into?
    My new Sony 4K player has literally been a huge inspiration for me to want again to look at my movie collection and get it all out of storage. My collection may not be as large as others have accumulated, but it’s probably more media than I have time to watch or listen to for the rest of my life. I’m never going to stop adding to it though. From audio cassettes to CD music and audiobooks to 4K BluRays, I’ll never get tired of physical media.
    This Sony player does a good job with the 4K upscaling(for me). But then I don’t know how good other players are because this is my first. You’ve been very helpful for me to learn how to use this player correctly. Now I need to control my urges to buy new discs! Some of the prices are simply too good to pass up. An estimated average of $12-$15 per movie. Some were over 50% discounted.
    As soon as I can, I’m going to bring all of my movies to the house from storage. I have another urge to make a new list of movies and tv shows on my computer. I had a list several years ago but it got outdated because I didn’t add to it for a while.
    That was a different computer too. I swear, it’s because I bought this player. All of my new urges. Thanks again for the great advice and suggestions in all your videos.

      That's awesome man! I'm glad to hear you're having fun and getting into this stuff. And I'm glad to hear you're happy with your Sony player. Yes, it is a very addictive hobby. And yeah, you can find some really great deals on Amazon and from other places if you're not picky about having slipcovers or the collectible packaging. This is especially true of the major studio releases (as opposed to the smaller boutique label releases, which tend to be more expensive and collectible). While new studio releases may be a little pricey when they first come out, usually the prices will come down within a few months after release (and sometimes within just a few weeks). And you'll see different sales emerge throughout the year. I keep the titles I want the most in my "saved cart" on Amazon, and then I just scan through my saved cart every few days to see if anything I want has gone on sale.
      I own all the titles you mentioned in 4K... Poltergeist, Smokey and the Bandit, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (my personal favorite Spielberg film), and I think they're all great on 4K (although be prepared for a little grain with Close Encounters... there are a few scenes that some might consider a little "rough" looking. But it's all baked into the source). I know you just got the blu ray, but Poltergeist is actually pretty awesome in 4K too.
      You may eventually find yourself double dipping a bit. Like there are some titles I bought on blu ray a few years ago thinking I'd be good with those... but then I ultimately had a change of heart later on and still ended up upgrading to 4K anyway LMAO! The rabbit hole goes deep LOL!
      Anyway, glad to hear you're doing well. Thanks for your continued support of the channel!

And because the only information I had about you was from a private FB group post, I wasn't sure if you wanted your real name outed on a public RUclips channel (meaning, when I'm in a private group, I respect people's anonymity). Hi thanks for watching and weighing in! Really appreciate it. Congrats on picking up the Sony X700. I love mine. To get the best results with HDMI cables, you just want to make sure you're using a high-speed HDMI cable that is designed for 4K or better (HDMI 2.0 or higher). It doesn't need to be the most expensive cable on the market or anything... it just needs to be able to handle higher speeds for data transfer with 4K. Now with that said, I think my Sony X700 came with an HDMI cable when it was new, so it's possible your used one might come with a cable as well. But if you want to play it safe, I would maybe pick up an HDMI cable that can support up to 8K (HDMI 2.1). Amazon should have a number of options that are reasonably priced (I bought mine from Amazon here in the U.S.). I seem to remember paying only about $10-15 each for 8K cables when I first got my Sony X700. I'd say the high-speed cable is pretty important to get the smoothest performance from 4K.
      Here's a link with some more info about the different types of HDMI cables. I hope this helps! www.lifewire.com/hdmi-cables-and-connectors-what-you-need-to-know-4685377
      Feel free to reach out to me if you have any further questions about the 4K format once you get your player up and running. One thing I like about the X700 is that you can further adjust/tweak the image (brightness, contrast, colors, etc.) on the 4K player itself (beyond just what your TV adjustments can do), which can be helpful when you're first starting out watching 4K discs.

And be sure to double-check the specs on each of those... if I remember right, I think only the UB820 has Dolby vision (the 420 may just be HDR10 and HDR10+). So if your TV is Dolby Vision-compatible and you want to take advantage of DV, then the UB820 would be the way to go. But it is the more expensive of the two models. BTW, the blu-ray-to-4k upscaling on my Panasonic UB820 is really good! And it's a very reliable player. Tons of features with image and subtitle configuring. It has an HDR optimizer that is very handy for getting the best image, especially for lower-end to mid-range 4K TV models.

Other than that, the Panny has been a great player for me. I still give it the edge over my Sony, in terms of overall player quality -- but not by that much.

In the hope that your tips might solve my issue, I followed your advice on the video and progressively played a standard BR that the X800 had recently froze on, but still no success. I have tested other standard BR's but the player either freezes immediately or just after, for example, the introductory "Universal" logo appears. The player freezes completely - no eject, no power on/off, no menu navigation. I have to unplug the player and plug it back in in order to eject the disc. It has the latest software (31-05-2022). These discs work fine on my X700. Any tips on this would be much appreciated.🙂

The description says that you apparently need to set it to ON every time you watch a disc that has Dolby Vision content but it sounds a bit tedious - do I really need to open the settings every time and set it to ON for Dolby Vision and OFF to regular HDR? Or can I always leave it ON, if it doesn't affect non Dolby Vision content?

    • @AlexPetrov108
      @AlexPetrov108 5 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry, I actually found the answer that you DO have to manually set it to ON, every time you're going to watch a Dolby Vision disc, and set it back to OFF after that for all the rest to see the correct image. It's not like black becomes white but subtle difference is there. What a bummer...

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@AlexPetrov108 That is correct... you have to toggle DV on and off manually depending on the disc. That's probably the biggest downside to this player that people take issue with. But for what it's worth, I think my Sony X700 has other features that are better than the more expensive Panny UB820 units (like the quick subtitle toggle on/off button on the remote and the convenient status display configuration). So there are trade-offs in both directions. Personally, I have a Samsung 4K TV, so I don't even have access to Dolby Vision at this time, only HDR10+. So usually HDR10 is what I'm rocking regardless. One of these days I need to upgrade to a DV-compatible panel.

    I think the original video touches on the real problem at hand here: Low-quality manufacturing and QC issues coming out of the factories that operate the stamping facilities for these discs. Many of these facilities have been found to have known issues with their production runs on discs. Unfortunately, little if any corrective action is being taken by those that produce these discs. The Sony players are doing the best they can with what is effectively defective merchandise - poorly stamped discs with errors and defects on them.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  10 месяцев назад +4

      I don't disagree with that at all. The QC/low-quality manufacturing issues are really frustrating, and I've definitely encountered a number of discs I've had to return/replace because of poor QC. But beyond that, most of the time, I don't really have too many issues with most 4K discs I own. I will have an occasional disc give me problems even on my Panny UB820 (in fact, sometimes my Sony X700 will even play discs without problems that were problematic when played on my Panny). So I actually think the Sony players are good units. But I have found that certain settings (namely, turning on 4K upscaling when playing a 4K disc) can also cause issues for some. So I think it's a combination of factors, depending on the disc and situation. Thanks for watching and weighing in!

    Hello mate, back again with a question! Lol
    I've just bought a new Hisense TV Qled with Dolby vision and recently I bought the Sony 4K blu ray player ( love it ) but my question to you is when I put on a 4k film that supports Dolby vision should I turn it on in the settings of my Sony 4k player or will my new TV ( that supports Dolby vision ) handle it anyway?
    I'm thinking of turning it on in the Sony player aswell as the TV supporting it.
    What do you think?
    Also this new Hisense I've bought does 400 nits. Is that enough to handle Dolby vision? I've read in comments 300-400 nits is terrible for HDR etc but to my layman eyes my last Hisense did 300 nits and I loved the HDR.
    Guess I've never seen an Oled in the flesh to compare lol
    Hope you reply with your cultured knowledge ✌️

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, you definitely want to turn on the Dolby Vision on your Sony player whenever you're playing a disc with DV (and then turn it off when the disc does not have DV). That's one of the main complaints people have with the Sony players... having to manually turn DV on and off, instead of it just being automatic. But both your player and TV need to match (meaning the TV won't just handle it on it's own. The Sony needs to have the DV turned on as well).
      As for the nits, those are pretty low numbers. Yes, people who have OLED tvs will see a much bigger difference with DV than those with the lower end TVs (I don't have an OLED either). But that doesn't necessarily mean you won't see some benefit from it, even on your Hisense. I would say just try turning the DV on for DV discs and see what you think of the picture. If you prefer the image with DV, then stick with that. A lot of it comes down to your eyes as well... everyone's eyes are different, so we all see different things. So I'd say just go with what looks best to you.
      Also I can't remember if we talked about this before or not, but you can also further adjust the brightness, contrast, colors etc on your Sony player when a disc is playing. Just hit the "Options" button on your remote while a movie is playing, and it will bring up some video options and other things you can tweak to fine-tune the picture to your preference.
      Hope this helps!

    Also, I want to mention that also have an Sony Bdv-n9200wl all in one system. Using the HDMI-ARC connection from the unit plugged into the HDMI-3 (eARC) in my Samsung Qled 80A sometimes madea the blu-ray player image to lag image and sound: I could fix it buying another cooler fan base under this unit (4 big fans or more functions too) and making it run all the time when the unit starts -but sometimes when sony bdv-n9200wl it’s too cold with this fans I try to make the fans not work too hard-. Also I can mention that cold weather can make both units not work well so it depends where you live.
    Take note that Sony bdv-n9200wl if not works well with hdmi-arc could be the hdmi cable (at first I’ve had had connected it with 2.1 hdmi cable and had many freezing and lagging sound and image problems/ the way i could make it work well was using an 2.0 vention hdmi cable).
    So… hope this comment helped somebody out there that has one or both units and has problems with them and doesn’t know how to solve them. It’s not a cheap option to repair fabric problems this equipment has buying this cheap 17’ laptop cooling fan base made them work quite well.
    cheers to all we love cinema and enjoy it in it’s best version available out there!!!
