Yeah, that is bizarre that the player doesn’t have a way to dissipate the heat generated inside. I have the UDP-X700 & it’s problem is that it occasionally shuts down, locks up not freezing. It’s apparently a known firmware issue.
I recently bought the Sony X800M2 , after owning it for one week I've been experiencing freezing and skipping while watching a movie. I returned it and bought the Panasonic UB820
I own this player and have had one or two discs freeze. I cleaned the discs and the problem disappeared. Never assume a disc right out of the box is perfectly clean. They are not. The entire player occasionally freezes up. An unplug, plug back in reset takes care of that.
Had a problem with freezing on the 4K UHD Blu-ray Top Gun Maverick disc; it would black out occasionally like a video dropout and then resume within 10 seconds. Also, the player's menu system would not show on the TV when selecting the menu button on the player remote. The player was hooked through a Denon AV receiver acting as a hub for multiple devices with a single HDMI out connecting to a Bravia 65" 4K TV. I decided to hook the player directly to the Bravia TV via a different TV HDMI port and voila; everything worked, freezing disappeared completely and the player's menu system appeared when requested via the menu button. I assume the Denon AV receiver loses something in the 4K video interface before reaching the TV.
I solved the problem by using new ultra HD 4K certified HDMI cables in connecting through the Denon VA receiver as a hub. Everything works well now, including improved Dolby Atmos sound.
@@johnbovard8454 Any chance you can write the name or brand of the cables? Or are there any specific declarations to look out for? I have bought some "high speed 4K certified" cables in the past but i think the box labels were misleading.

Same issue in the UBP-X700, sometimes it just freeze and I need to unplug it, and plug again. Yesterday, I was watching Transformers the Last Knight, and It freezes like 1 or 2 seconds in two or three parts of the movie, but I think it could be related to the disk, because it happens always in the same point. However, the complete freezing symptom also happens from time to time. Other issue is when certain disks are playing, the player emits a lot of noise during playback, but it does not happen with all disks.
the panasonic does the same thing, I just got the thing several day ago and last night my movie froze, this thing is brand new why would it do that, of course it could have been the disc
I have the same 4K player. It doesn’t freeze like yours does, but when it comes to audio, sometimes my 4K discs have the audio out of sync with the movie. I have to rewind a little bit every time it does that. I wish it would stop that

I have never had quick start feature on. I have also read that some of the freezing may be due to having the player hooked up via ethernet or wifi. I have just disconnected mine from the internet, so we'll see how that goes.
Once you said it only started upon a firmware update I would never attempt any of what you did in this video! I would have found a way to reverse the update!
I was thinking the same thing. How can you pin the problem to a firmware update and then take the unit apart? It's not logical. BTW I'm looking for a 4K unit. Owners are saying the Sony and Panasonic units are freezing up but what are people recommending under $500?
I’ve had bad luck with 4k players. My first one was a Samsung player and it would have a grinding sound on some discs and it actually ruined my copy of the the dark knight. I replaced it with the Sony x800 and it always had freezing problems. Then I bought a Panasonic 820 and it never gave me any problems but after a few years I wanted something more “premium” so got the Panasonic 9000 and that was the biggest mistake I ever made. 7 months after I bought it, it started to have video glitches. Sent it for repair and paid $115. 7 months after the repair it has the same problems and now I am no longer in warranty for parts or labor so repairs around $700 lol what a joke. The player was $1200 lol
any solutions? i bought a sony x800m2 last year and it worked great. was working in january then i left for a month, came home, and now it reads discs but wont load them. wont even recognize 4ks. cant load the apps. ive factory reset it and everything and it seems to have fried itself just by sitting on the tv stand for a month. any suggestions?
okay so far this seems to work. check the power adapter its plugged into. try plugging it directly into the wall, factory resetting it, and then turning on wifi, and then restarting it. in that order. and it will run discs without issue. the hardware requires a lot of juice to run, and if it doesnt, the software glitches. i will update if this no longer works.

I just turned off 4k upscaling. Modern TVs do upscaling better anyways. Allegedly it upscales 4k content too so it creates more heat and uses too many resources for nothing. Feels like a old feature that never got updated for 4k blu rays lol
My Samsung player never freezes. But it doesn’t have Dolby Vision. I’m considering the Sony, since I have a Sony TV and this is cheaper than the Panasonic. But now I’m not sure what to do.

Ridiculous how these players have freezing issues and sony doesn’t acknowledge the problem. Every 10 or discs freeze on me and have to unplug the player. It’s very frustrating
@@TurntableGuy oh don’t even get me started on Panasonic lol. I think I’m just cursed with these players. I had the Panasonic ub820, had it for around 2 years and never gave me a single problem. I thought, since it’s been so good I’m gonna go ahead and buy the 9000 model. It was the worst decision I ever made. For the first 7 months the 9000 was great and one day I started getting a lot of pixelated images. I tried the same movies on my other players and they worked fine. Contacted Panasonic and had to pay $115 out of pocket since labor warranty had expired (3 months) but fortunately the parts were still covered. Without the parts under warranty it would’ve been another $550 just in parts. Anyways, sent it in and got it repaired and 8 months after being repaired the same problem. Now it could cost me close to $700 to get this player repaired. The 820 is great but I can’t say the same for the 9000. I honestly would never buy another “premium” Panasonic product again. I now have a $1200 player that plays 50% of my movies with no issues. Ridiculous!
Mine used to freeze about 10% of the time, but after the latest firmware update a few months back, it hasn't frozen up once. I really think UHD blurays are pushing the capabilities of optical media to it's limits and that's why they are so finicky, I have a few different players (and gaming consoles that have UHD players) and almost every single one has had issues.
I agree. There are so many layers in these discs, I can see them being difficult to read. What is strange though is that my el-cheapo Sanyo 4K player reads everything flawlessly.
I just recently bought one of these players and decided to get the 4 year geeksquad extended warranty from Best Buy just in case. I only had one freeze happen on john wick 3 4k. I hear that the cause is the 100gb disc sizes can be too much for the optical drives to handle. Some suggest cleaning the disc even if it's new and not having the sony player on standby mode all the time either. I might test out John wick 3 on my ps5 and see if it does the same thing on the scene it froze on. Since physical media isn't as popular anymore maybe the quality control of 4k blu-rays have gone downhill. That is also a probability as well
Mine did the same thing yesterday with a SACD disk. I think turning it on while turning on my Marantz preamp might have confused it. But yeah - I've had to reset the Sony several times by unplugging it.
Imagine how cool that would actually be if they found a way to put 4k or even 1080p movies with lossless audio into a cartridge like a Nintendo switch game lol
I'm a big Sony fan and always wanted to get this player. So with this potential issue should I still get it at this time? I've just been holding out on a new player from them that will do auto DV. I know for a fact that they're not going to have HDR10+ support as it's a Samsung thing and plus none of their TVs even support it. Should I just get the Panasonic UB820 instead? I've only heard good things about it. I have 2 OLEDs from both Sony and Samsung so having more of a universal player would be nice even though I wanted that Sony integration. It seems like manufacturers know that physical media will be dying soon so maybe that explains why there hasn't been any new more up to date players out there. Kinda strange for me to buy a tech or product that is around 4 years old for the same MSRP as well. At least it didn't go up like everything right? Both players are on sale right now though. Btw I also have a 4K projector so many I'm better off with the UB820?
I had the same issues with a x800 freezing. After eventually losing all patience I picked up the Panasonic ub820, best decision I made. I'd absolutely recommend the ub820 over the Sony, had it for over 12 months with no issues. Plus it has a great feature for adjusting HDR levels in films.

I feel a lot better knowing I wasn't the only early adopter of HD-DVD. Oh well... and here in Australia as well !! Great channel BTW :). I'm wondering, is it freezing when a layer change occurs? This would hint at the fact you did a firmware upgrade recently, just a thought 🤔
Wow. I just ordered this model. We are renovating house so we threw out all my dvd collection since I never play them, also threw out my HDDVDs. Oh, well. My components all have fans. Doubt that I’ll have heating issues. I purchased this because my five month old Panasonic stopped playing my discs. Message incompatible discs. I was so angry I slammed the player against the tile floor and just threw it in the garbage.
Not sure why sony would go through the trouble to put all the ventilation holes in the cover and then cover them up with another cover but if I get one I think I will run it with the black removed .and maybe add a fan , Update : after watching another video there seems to be an issue with running certain settings , I have a feeling that the upscaling in the tv may be fighting the upscaling from the player , I would turn it off in the players settings , Here is a link to help with this problem ruclips.net/video/Sym8ayOpL-4/видео.htmlfeature=shared

My 2020 X800M2 has been gradually having a problem reading all discs, have to try like 6 times now. My old LG 870 is still working perfect, never any issues. Makes me wonder why Sony has a good reputation. 😐 UPDATE: Just removed my Sony's disc drive, cleaned the lens & lubed the rail, works perfect again....for now. It still gets confused with DVD screen size format, always has when first loading. So, it was a dirty lens or bad connection I'm thinking. Probably connection issue, lens appeared to be clean. Please note there are TWO SCREWS in back of player that keeps top from sliding off! You'll see 3 just remove them all to be sure.
Dude, it's not the inside of the machine. It's the same issue as other X700.... turn 4k upscale settings OFF, this makes a big difference to freezing issues for many people. Also any3D setting must be turned off too
Most of the time, it's smudges or a film on the disc (especially 4k). Try cleaning the disc with a soft microfiber wipe. I had freezing issues on the 800M2 and that fixed it. The laser has trouble reading thru the film or smudge. Quality control on 4K discs has been substandard the past year or so. Try cleaning the disc you are having trouble with. It will more than likely fix the issue. It's not s Sony software or hardware issue...it's the disc manufacturers.

Windex on a laser lens? Please never use household cleaning products on an optical lens. A lint-free swab or a folded lint-free cloth with 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol. You can buy it at electronic supply stores and some hardware stores.
A mild window cleaner does not leave any residue whereas alcohol can cloud over on the lens. I've been cleaning laser lenses for 40 years and I've never had a problem with a dab of window cleaner and cotton swab.

I have the UDP-X700 & it’s problem is that it occasionally shuts down, locks up not freezing.
It’s apparently a known firmware issue.
UBP-X700 same issue, and only freezes with BD100 triple layer discs (4K UHD BD) :(
So, I have the 700m2 and quick start was the culprit. Hope this helps even for a year or two later.
Was it on or off? Which made it work?
Interesting. Might have to try a direct TV hookup since the player has 2 HDMI outputs.
No problems with either X800 or X800M2.I own.
Don't have the player but planing on getting one. From what I saw online, turning off the 4K Upscale Setting and setting the Cinema Conversion Mode to Video helped 90% of this problem to go away.
Doesn't work on mine.
@@TurntableGuy Normal Blu-rays and older (first) uhd discs never had this problems. I think that all comes down to HDR (specifically Dolby Visions new profiles) pushing the chips harder and creating thermal throttling in these players. It's either that or the industry makes intentional bad discs so the physical media dies out sooner. These plastic banning mofos and the crowd behind it.
@@MauroEnassyeah no your probably right about Dolby vision. I just had an LG oled have freezing issues when playing only Dolby vision, it got to a point where I’d have to unplug the tv and plug it back in for it to work. Something up with Dolby vision.
Get a panasonic ub820. I got rid of this player because I noticed the freezing would occur on triple layer bd100 discs. Having to get up and unplug the player during a climactic scene got old fast
I was looking at one of those and then read some forums which stated that it could have freezing problems as well.
All of the players have freezing issues. All you have to do is a quick Google search. I followed someone's advice before on getting a Panasonic. It froze on me too.
What's the reason people try and play bd100 discs. Are these writeable bd discs that have been written too on a PC ?
I haven't used mine for a year because of the freezing issue but when i used it the other day, there was a new firmware and i watched La La Land and it didnt freezed
I do have the same player .only freeze on some movies but the cure is to eject disc tray and play the same spot. On the other hand some discs keep freezing trying them on another player Panasonic one work smoothly.have you reached a solution or any update about this player. Mine is brand new but will try to clean the lens as you did.
Try the settings of TheOriginalFuzz advice for the freezing problems of the 4K players of Sony. Up to now I didn't have any freezing since I changed the settings to that advice in my Sony 800 mk1 (I don't have the M2).
Tried all the settings, nothing works. Player is defective. Bought a Panasonic 820.

Found out 4k upscaling also upscales 4k content. Creating more heat. Just let the tv do the upscaling, it feels like a old feature just left behind from the late regular blu ray era
I wish it would stop that
Freezing usually has to do with a Laser reading issue. Either a blemish on the DVD or digital operation interface from reader to processor.
How about dust/dirt on the lens?
@robertt9342 like years ago when I was in the navy and smoking was allowed the CDROM readers would get a smoke film on the disk reader.
I have x800 freezing on each disk I tried previously I had an xbox one x and no freeze so it's not a fatality just rubish developped machine

Was looking at getting one of these a while back and was concerned with it freezing. Was given the following advice so please try this.Turn off quick start feature so as a fresh boot up starts each time.Don’t know if it will work as didn’t purchase this item in the end.
I have never had quick start feature on. I have also read that some of the freezing may be due to having the player hooked up via ethernet or wifi. I have just disconnected mine from the internet, so we'll see how that goes.
@@TurntableGuy Hope you get it sorted. If and when I get mine definitely will be the Panasonic.
None of those things help it.😊

Once you said it only started upon a firmware update I would never attempt any of what you did in this video! I would have found a way to reverse the update!
I was thinking the same thing. How can you pin the problem to a firmware update and then take the unit apart? It's not logical.
BTW I'm looking for a 4K unit. Owners are saying the Sony and Panasonic units are freezing up but what are people recommending under $500?
@@voiceofreason9238let us know when you find a good one. I have the Sony 800, no freeze yet. Fingers crossed 🤞
Try turning off 4K upscaling. It does stop freezing and you still get a quality upscaling through the tv
Tried that. No difference.
I have the UBP- X1000 , it kept freezing on all my Blue ray movies so I turn off the upscaling HDR and fixed the issues
any solutions? i bought a sony x800m2 last year and it worked great. was working in january then i left for a month, came home, and now it reads discs but wont load them. wont even recognize 4ks. cant load the apps. ive factory reset it and everything and it seems to have fried itself just by sitting on the tv stand for a month. any suggestions?
okay so far this seems to work. check the power adapter its plugged into. try plugging it directly into the wall, factory resetting it, and then turning on wifi, and then restarting it. in that order. and it will run discs without issue. the hardware requires a lot of juice to run, and if it doesnt, the software glitches. i will update if this no longer works.
@@pancakecookiecrumblestried this, didn’t work. Still gives me disc unknown. Unable to play this disc. Utilized different Blu rays and 4k’s with the same result. Is it dead?

I have the original model of this player the UBP X800 that just dose HDR10 no Dolby Vision and it’s been working fine. Sometimes it acts up shutting off it will power cycle and not go to standby but other then that the payer has worked 90% of the time.
If I do a replacement of the optical lens from the inside, do you think the issue get solved?
No. Read the other comments.
Get a Panasonic. These Sonys are a disaster. My X700 would not stop freezing. I had to shell out more cash to get a Panasonic. Don’t put cheap tires on a Ferrari is the best advice I can give you.
Hey did you eventually find out what the problem was?
For me it was the 4k upscale setting. Another RUclipsr found that it tries to upscale all content including 4k discs. Morecenetgy equals more heat. Modern tv do upscaling better anyways.
Ridiculous how these players have freezing issues and sony doesn’t acknowledge the problem. Every 10 or discs freeze on me and have to unplug the player. It’s very frustrating
I dumped mine. Bought a Panasonic.
Ridiculous!

Unplug it and wait a few minutes before plugging it back in.
@@TurntableGuy I didn't even know Sanyo made 4k players.
The one that's always worked for me is the Panasonic UB820.
@@LumberjakPipester that's also a crappy player. I've already bought two and both had freezing and pixelation issues.
My Samsung one sometimes blacks out for a few seconds when watching a film so I have to rewind back to the part I missed
Lol.
That is also a probability as well
Did your test work??
My Sony sometimes freezes after inserting SACD disc. Then I need to unplug it , wait and plug it back. Anyone experiences same with SACD?
Mine did the same thing yesterday with a SACD disk. I think turning it on while turning on my Marantz preamp might have confused it. But yeah - I've had to reset the Sony several times by unplugging it.
I'm wondering if it's a heat issue. I'm tempted to take my cover off just so it can ventilate better.
I've tried running it with the lid off, no difference. The chips really don't get that hot.
Imagine how cool that would actually be if they found a way to put 4k or even 1080p movies with lossless audio into a cartridge like a Nintendo switch game lol
Mine is the UBP X700 and the screen is flickering and even black screening on mine
Just take it to sony service or just needs a cleaning? Those laser lens needs a cleaning.
Did you watch the video?
Physical media will never die completely as most people have shite internet speeds making streaming crap and a hassle to deal with
For me the disc movie freezes cause the disc has smudges on the disc either DVD , Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray then I wipe the disc and it plays fine think I got a newer 4k sony player
Difficult to tell if it's at the layer change.
It is frequently due to a layer change. Also, it could be a heat issue.
I heard that maybe it has to do with 4K upscaling, try to turn that off and see what happens!
Did that. Did everything. Player is a dud. Bought a Panasonic 820 and it works awesome.
I've run mine with the cover completely off to see if there would be any difference. It still froze occasionally.

UPDATE:
Just removed my Sony's disc drive, cleaned the lens & lubed the rail, works perfect again....for now.
This is a known software issue nothing to do with the hardware
Some people say software, others say overheating, networking, etc.

They're all off.
Anyone tried just setting the unit over a.small fan to make sure it's cool enough?
Me and my dad have a unit each, and they both freeze and skip
Most of the time, it's smudges or a film on the disc (especially 4k). Try cleaning the disc with a soft microfiber wipe. I had freezing issues on the 800M2 and that fixed it. The laser has trouble reading thru the film or smudge. Quality control on 4K discs has been substandard the past year or so. Try cleaning the disc you are having trouble with. It will more than likely fix the issue. It's not s Sony software or hardware issue...it's the disc manufacturers.
Tried that, no difference. I'd say it's definitely a Sony issue since the discs play perfectly in my Sanyo 4K player.
No it's not the disc at all you fool. It's definitely the player.
