If you want a difficult watch, one that hits hard, watch the video for Prison Sex. The song is hard hitting because is speaks of the cycle of sexual abuse. Starts with the victim that becomes the perpetrator. The music is haunting, but you NEED to watch the official video that goes with it.

Since you're new to the Tool Army, you should know that early Tool is angry Tool. Although Maynard has always been able to send a message through the music, it's much more raw than the stuff you started on. I love that you called out the intensity in this performance and the fact that he's playing a character in this performance. Also... The addiction will find the center in you and it will chew you up. It's not your friend, It'll leave you broken. Love watching you on this journey, looking forward to more!

“I will find a center in you, I will chew it up and leave” just refers to an addict’s proclivity to lie and exploit the empathy of loved ones in this dark place, promising to change, that their intentions are honest. It’s like the character’s inner voiceprint conscience, deep down knowing that they’re just doing the minimal and saying what’s expected of them to perpetuate their addiction. Or another interpretation could be the substance itself, “elevating” the artist’s creativity and feeling good while inebriated, just enough for addiction to grab a hold and “bring them down” to the darkness of addiction.
Maynard was inspired by a friend of his who was an artist and felt like he couldn’t be creative without being loaded, and the dark places this mindset will inevitably being the person.

This song is about addiction. It’s that simple.
I see a lot of people suggesting the Pneuma Live Drum Cam video. And while it is impressive and Danny is an octopus on the drums, I think you will get more out of the song by listening to the studio version first, and then watching the live version. The sound quality is better on the studio version and you will understand more when watching the live video after. Great reactions!

As someone with debilitating mental illnesses, I always interpreted 'Sober' and its message of how one person can destroy multiple lives as a reflection of my own journey to reel in self-destructive tendencies, and behavior patterns that hurt others.
"I will find a center in you, I will chew it up and leave" and "I will only complicate you, trust in me and fall as well" to me always felt like the warnings I would give potential friends and partners, knowing the full destructive range of my illnesses. This song is very much a companion to dark, chaotic times.
Im better now, and identify more with Tool's more enlightened, less angry later work. But old, angry, frustrated Tool most definitely serves a purpose and holds a place in my heart.

I completely agree. Perhaps it would be a good idea to get a bit of background info on MJK's life beforehand, and the story behind those songs. 10,000 Days is by far my favorite album, and those songs in particular rip your soul apart.
As the story goes this song is about a friend of the band who didn’t feel like they could be an affective creator/ artist without the assistance of “fill in the blank vice.” I’ve always approached the “narrator” as being both the voice of the addict and the addiction. The addict manipulates and placates their relationships to get what they want, but the addiction also uses the same kind of internal narrative with the addict to keep them in its grasp. Keep going, loving your reactions!

For me, the lyric “I will find a centre in you, I will chew it up and leave” is about the impact of addiction. It can destroy who you are as a person and leave a broken shell at the end. Maybe just my interpretation of a dark song though. Love your Tool reactions bro.

Maynard once said his music is his own personal therapy, you see his growth and transformation through his lyrics and yeah, early Tool was definitely dark and angry. But it was only through working that out that they could move on to more deep and positive meanings

That line you asked about, I believe those sections are a conversation between the person this is about and the drug itself. The drug telling the person to trust in it and that it will help find a center in them. Almost pulling them back into the addiction thru justification and this song represents the internal dialogue someone has when they are addicted. Who knows, but that’s the beauty of Tool. Their songs are an instrument, or a tool, to be applied in the way you need it to at the moment. The lyrics seem vague, yet FEEL specific to me in my current emotional state, depending on the struggle. Enough rambling, great reaction! Can’t wait for more!
I actually came to this channel as a Pilkinite, but have always been a TOOL fan. I'm so happy when i wake up and get to watch a TOOL reaction before i have to get ready for work. The TOOL army is a very special group of people, we are glad to have you be a part of us.

Since you're in-touch with psychology and philosophy, you might find it interesting to observe the band's progression of self-awareness, spirituality, and philosophical perspective over time. They were relatively in-touch with that stuff early on, but it really intensified and morphed over the span of their career.
Watching someone experience this video for the first time gives us the chills also. You could say were vicariously seeing it again through reaction vids! Segway... Vicarious!

Oh Man! Getting into Tool's earlier stuff. Their earlier music was a little angrier and darker, but still hopeful. I have a preference to their more positive, enlightened recent albums, but I absolutely appreciate the earlier stuff as well! It shows the incredible growth!!
Their album Opiate is so good and underrated. This song was on the following album. This old style Tool is packed with emotion.
Try their song “Reflection”. Absolutely beautiful song and has the contrast of both melancholy and uplifting moods.

This is a good reflection of the anger and rawness of early Tool. Probably not where I would have directed you next given what you have enjoyed from them so far, but keep spiraling!
Tool has still held on to some of their anger over the years. Songs like The Grudge and Vicarious are just as potent as Bottom or Aenema. I've been a tool fan for almost 30 years now. Always happy to see more of your reactions.

This is such a powerful song and an even more powerful performance. Keep in mind, Maynard is known to suffer from severe stage fright. So although his performance for this song live is a lot on the performative side, knowing that he also suffers from that just adds to it. You’ll notice in their live songs that he often isn’t seen. It’s not that he’s not there performing, he’ll just be hidden to help with his anxiety. Keep going down the Tool rabbit hole and we’ll all be there right on your side! All love Sebs 🤙🏻❤️

I've seen Tool I think 3 times, each time he now sings in the background with little to no light on him. I've never seen him in the forefront like he did back in those days when Sober first came out (Mid 90's I think)
You would fall in love with a song by "Deftones". It features Maynard and the lead vocalist. Songs called "Passenger. Best collab ever.
I'm almost 68 years old and I listen to a lot of bands. Tool who I've seen 4 times here in the UK. They really are amazing.❤
Enjoy the ride sir. It’s nice to see someone go through the deciphering of their music. I would suggest the songs stinkfist which is the song they often close their shows with and the first song from the album that really blew them up. Also from the same album is the song “Pushit” which is also not a happy song but amazing if you like to be taken on a journey.try to see them love while you can!

I finally subscribed bc I love your Tool reactions. From my perspective, I loved this song in my drug addiction & depression - I identified as the "worthless liar". I'm currently 16 yrs sober & in therapy. I now identify with the "shadow just behind me" as the darkness that sometimes stalks me. I feel like I really grew up & evolved WITH Tool. Their music is so layered that you can find so many different ways to relate.

Vicarious , eulogy, and the grudge are awesome tracks for the gym and hitting weights. Man the opening guitar riff of eulogy is one the simplest yet darkest bad ass tones ever.
Always check out the studio versions first, as the music is far better there. If you'd like afterwards, check them out live. In reality, however, the only live Tool worth checking out is the Danny Carey drum cam of Pneuma. (Tool is my favorite band, btw.)
Please listen to the album version on your own. People always suggest this video and Maynard's performance is great but the audio sounds like sh*t. One of the most iconic riffs just doesn't come thru in poor quality.
Hey Sebs, rarely do I comment on YT videos but when you said how you were "Waiting for me to be ready for them" at the start of this video I had to comment. While I've been a fan of Tool since back in the Undertow days they were just part of a rotation of bands that made up the soundtrack of my teens/early 20's life. But when Lateralus was released I remember listening to it a couple of times and being underwhelmed so I actually shelved the album for almost 3 years before listening to it again and what a difference 3 years of life and growing up can do because upon revisiting Lateralus I had what I can only describe as a spiritual awakening and it was like I was listening to the music for the first time where as before I was only hearing it (hopefully that makes sense). It was exactly as you so eloquently put it in the video like the music was waiting for me to be emotionally mature enough before it revealed its beauty to me. Anyway just like every other Tool fan out there I am rambling on so enjoy the ride and spiral out my friend. Peace.

Tool definitely have range! You should also check out the DMT side of them with (all 3 songs in a row for full impact) Lipan Conjuring, Lost Keys, Rosetta Stoned. Also Third eye. The musicianship is out of this world.
My husband of 20 years has been an alcoholic for 10 of them. I bawl my eyes out everytime I hear this song.
I think you should listen to “the grudge” from the lateralus album! You mentioned you like their range and “The Grudge” is a good example of a different sound from them that you might want to react to!
Tool guitarist Adam Jones has stated in an interview that the song is about a friend of the band whose artistic expression only comes out when he is under the influence. "A lot of people give him shit for that," Jones explains. "If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault."
You REALLY hace to check The Grudge out. Easily one of their best and my personal favorite. Every single one of them shine so much on that song

Since you’re discussing fan base’s, I think ( In no particular order ) Tool, Pantera, Alice In Chains, & Pink Floyd all have the best, most loyal fan base I’ve noticed over the years

He's speaking from addiction. An addiction will you chew you up and leave you when you're absolutely nothing
Getting sober was the best choice I ever made. And it wasn't that hard either. If anybody reading this is dependant on a chemical, I hope you have the courage to end your addiction. There are many many many safe ways to stop taking a drug. If you take opioids I HIGHLY recommend tapering off of your drug using Kratom, if Suboxone or Methadone doesn't help. If you are dependant on Benzos or Alcohol, I also HIGHLY recommend using Gabapentin or Pregabalin to get off of them. When you spend all day, everyday, numbing bad feelings. Then, by that same standard, you are also numbing good feelings. After I got off of Benzos I just had so much energy and I was able to enjoy things again. Addiction, Anxiety and Depression pretty much go hand-in-hand. When you help anxiety, you are also helping your depression. If you're helping your addiction, you are helping your anxiety and depression at the same time. Just some good info I try to throw out whenever possible.
Keep sober Jacket. I’m on meds for many years. I have ups and downs. But I learned that alcohol helped for a couple hours of pure joy, and ended in 4 days of self pity and repeat that cycle. I finally stopped doing that for 2yrs 8months now. Only take the medicine. At times alcohol pops in my head, but I promised myself to never go back. God bless ya brother.

I'm so glad for your introduction to Tool; it is a life changing path that they offer to those that walk it while connecting to their music and lyrical content. I would like to offer this advice now going forward with their music (whether reactions or on your own) is to go through their discography in chronological order, and then also considering the personal growth of someone walking a spiritual path. On this path one can also think of each album as representing each of the chakras moving from the base chakra (represented by their EP Opiate) to the heaven chakra (Fear Inoculum).
Opiate represents the root chakra and base emotion including primal anger toward societal norms and religion; including reactionary apathy towards repercussions.
Undertow represents the solar plexus chakra through the lens of how we face addiction and sometimes demonize those dealing with addiction without instead of facing the addiction itself, which is the true demon.
Aenima then represents the throat chakra and speaks truth to the real underlying issues and angers that plague us societally; the title track speaks completely to this but so does the whole album.
Lateralus then represents the Third Eye and most "awakened" chakra; the album Aenima ends with a track titled "third eye" which is almost a precursor of what was to come with this album but the friendship and partnering with the artwork of Alex Grey cemented everything.
10000 Days represents the Crown chakra of spiritual development and the truly awakened state; another calling out to his angers toward society but also dealing with the death of his mother reveal a spiritual maturity that is indicative of a seeker's path.
Fear Inoculum then represents the Heaven chakra, one that is beyond the self and a reflection of the inwardness of the whole from a different perspective.
This is why I believe the whole of the discography is worthy of being digested and perceived in its chronology. This is also a working theory with no real substantial evidence other than the fact that I have also grown alongside this band's evolution in my own personal path, and these are realizations I have made along the way. This is not an attempt to say that this is or was the intention of Maynard or the band, but I do enjoy it as a perspective that does kind of fit pretty well.
I love seeing someone else finding Tool and sharing your openness of your path. I'm not asking or expecting you to connect to them with the same perspective, but I do hope you'll consider it as an assist in going deeper and spiraling out further. Keep going. Spiral Out. And welcome to the family. Cheers.

If you want to blow your mind in a totally different direction do Wings for Marie Pt. 1 and 2 (10,000 days) and listen with the lyrics. There's the enlightend Tool (Lateralus, 46&2, Pneuma, etc) there's angry tool (opiate, Sober, Aenema etc) then theres heart wrenching wich is Wings for Marie. It's a song about Maynard's mom
It’s what addiction does to people. It finds the center in them and chews it openly to make them feel they need it. If you don’t know any addicts or loved someone who has been an addict, or have never experienced addiction it can be difficult to grasp the concept. 🙏🏽

Jambi, or vicarious, are awesome musical voyages. I grew up early 80's when Metallica started, they were great till 91's black album, then tool released their first album, and I have not bought another Metallica album since, but have all of tools. Brilliant musicians.
Sober is indeed a sad song, but Prison Sex is most probably Tool's most disturbing song/lyric. Brace yourself for when you get to that one, because that one is utterly dark.

I'v d alt with depr soon most of my 45 years. Tool do an amazing job of both emoting how I feel, and bringing me out of it when I need it.

Would by Alice In Chains and Sober by Tool are both about Mother Love Bone vocalist Andrew Wood. His drug addiction caused him to feel as if he was unable to be creative while sober.

Like many have said, Early Tool is angry Tool. Just looking at it lyrically, you can see Maynards growth spiritually and otherwise from one album to the next. On Opiate he was pissed at the world and wanted to burn it to the ground. Undertow showed him still quite angry, but with a bit more reflection.
Ænima is when he started looking more inward with songs like H and Jimmy. It felt like he was fully realizing who he was and that there was more out there and that he was ready for a change (46&2) . That album literally ended with him prying open his 3rd eye.
Lateralus felt like him arriving to himself. A deeply spiritual album that felt like the culmination of a lot of personal work.
10000 Days always felt to me like someone who had lifted the burden of their internal struggles to look at the world around them. This album more than any other seemed to focus on external issues in the world.
Fear Inoculum feels more reflective than the others, but I guess that comes with age. Still some of that external commentary but a lot of looking back inwards, but from a 1000 ft view.
This could all just be me projecting, but its how I've always looked at their discography and the emotional effect I've felt from it
I can't wait to see him react to Judith, Wings For Marie and 10,000 Days.

If you like to decipher lyrics and be taken on a journey you really can’t go wrong listening to their Aenima album in chronological order. Just a warning there are a few tracks that are just filler more like ambient setting the mood for the song to come.
One thing about tool is that you have to remember how Maynard writes. He can step out of himself and he see ppl in his life and say no to those actions. Angry tool is just that, but they grow as they go.
Danny Carey drum cam is next my friend;) Then thats all the live you should do until you hear every other song studio track, no videos yet. Haha, do what you want and you won't be disappointed. I see them live in Dallas 1/31/22! Taking my mom to convert her and that should do it.
Dude, if you haven't you should check out A Perfect Circle as well. Maynard is the lead vocalist in that band as well. 13th Step is an incredible album all the way through but there's a track on it called "The Outsider" that I think is a good compliment to this song. The whole album is about addiction from different points of view and "The Outsider" is the perspective of someone who doesn't feel sympathy for the addict. But yeah, check out more projects with Maynard. Puscifer is also awesome.
