I was wondering why they were using old cars until I saw this was uploaded 13 years ago ! Fast forward to 2022 and I would expect the same test with a selection of similar cars from todays models would manage at least 60mpg, and for some like the new Yaris Hybrid it could do way more than that in an hour.
MannyFresh1x Because in europe they care about how much you pollute per KM, while in the usa they cara about Parts per million of the exhaust gases. So, if the exhaust gases of a car have a high percentage of contaminants, it can not run in the usa, even if the net amount of contaminants per km emitted is lower than any other car.
I think the Fiesta and 1 series do have an advantage, especially since they have far better handling than the other, you would need to slow down near have as much on the bend etc etc
That Top Gear episode? Of course, Top Gear is the best show ever devised. That Jag surprised me considering how Jeremy was driving at the beginning of the challenge, I thought for sure Hammond would win and Jeremy wouldn't make it. Those Low Fuel lights stayed on forever.
+Alex Deng Hybrid cars are designed for city driving, where they can rely on electric power most of the time (ie. when the car is stationary or moving slowly). If you drive at a constant and fairly high speed the car can only rely on its thermal power like everything else.
i searched for a lot of such videos, everyone promotes the brand they like and every country pushes the badges that bring them money , it was never about the fuel consuption.
Smart car wins, 'cause it only cost $10k to buy NEW! Wonder how much the BMW or the hybrid car cost new? Only 1 or 2 mpg difference way offsets by the difference in cost of the car! let's say if the BMW price $10k more than the Smart car , lot of gas can be bought from $10k! Exactly, 2500 gal of gas if 1 gal cost $4, like here in CA! 2500 gal at 55 mpg is 137,000 miles, all most the life of a car, as most people sell it at 100K miles, than car goes into the used market.
All this really proves is that driving style makes more of a difference than what car you drive. Hence why the smallest and (theoretically) most economical car came last and the most powerful car (BMW) almost won. A smaller engine is not necessarily more economical, particularly at higher speeds, as proven here. And the hybrids....well, they are just useless period.
I put more batteries in my pruis I get 80 mpg in the city 80 to 70 highway 70mph to 80 flat ground in Florida some people put lithmum batteries get 120 mpg average the batteries in the pruis are too small but business
What does driving style had to do with the size of the cars/their engines? I agree on driving style, obviously. But the fact that BMW lasted for longer than other small cars - makes me think maybe they did a mistake when they were putting the fuel inside.
@@MaximC No, driving style makes an enormous difference, flat out on the accelerator (like in the Smart) ruins fuel economy. That BMW 116d did well because it was more powerful meaning the driver didn't have to be flat out 95% of the time, no miscalculations. Also the BMW was fuel efficent from the start anyways.
Small diesels are coming to the U.S. -- FINALLY. Audi's A3 TDI joins the VW Jetta TDI this year. Now, hopefully Honda, Ford, Toyota, Nissan and GM will follow suit.
+UnsyNZ A hybrid benefits from varying load and idle-time. In this test much was to be gained by relatively high speed, little variation and no braking. In such circumstances hybrids are little more then small-engined petrol cars. If the test had included coming to a full stop each lap, the hybrids would have performed better.
@@erikv5382 Although oddly enough, I had a Prius hire car from Cornwall to Hampshire once, it averaged 83 mpg ! Mixed roads but pretty much 50mph on a lot of it.
This race still goes to show one thing: the Fiesta ECOnetic still beats anything, petrol, diesel (other than itself) or hybrid, in the economy stakes! Did anyone work out what the CO2 emissions for each of the cars was??? Joe
The curious proof of that was the Fiesta TDCi. The 1.6 was more economical than the 1.4 as it took less effort to get up to speed and maintain it. The Abarth 595, the most economical version is the one with the largest BHP.
Feeble attempts, my wife's Suzuki Swift 1.3 tdi easily does 64 mpg, slightly better if really careful. as for a unrealistic, flat, traffic n junction free airfield, well make your own guess.
Yes I agree, if they all did say 50mph maximum, still drive for the hour then we would get a better economy comparison. No point doing it with everyone at different speeds.
you all notice that the prius is the only midsize here and the smart is not even a car. you all also notice that the prius will beat all those cars in the city with regular gas and with four adults in confort right
yes ... and no - if 10 companies do the same test and the results are consistent you have a much better idea of the truth - however if you get 10 different results from the same test then you remain in the dark so imo i think it's a good idea to have the tests run over and over again ... sometimes
Thats exactly what i was thinking.top gear did a race like this with very exiteing rare expensive supercars that you wouldnt useally see on the road what has autocar done theyve copied top gear and done the same race with boreing fuel eficient economic cars you see all the time.
I put more batteries in my pruis 2003 get 80 in the city 70 to 60 on highway going 70 mph depending winds and hills pruis batteries too are too small lithium battery you go 120mpg on average hadn't found lithium batteries thou the car company got keep promising you something to buy. My my extra battery cost 200 dollars
okay so now I know who won this race but problem is. miles per gallon? whaaaat the hell is that? and no I'm not going to convert this. the video creator could do this in the first place. just put l/100km in the chart man.
If this is a ripoff, every car race is a rip-off from top gear... not! As usual with racing, the driver is at least half the equation, therefore: hurray to the Fiesta driver! My kind of driver (effective brain, less empty macho) As for cars, ... WHY BOTHER WITH HYBRIDS???* They only cost more, use more fuel, are more complicated and actually pollute extra with that big big battery.... *if the answer is city driving, get a bicycle, beats em all 500 times over...
RUBBISH! The Mitsi Colt CZ1 easily beats all of these. I have owned 3 since 2005 and all of them easily exceeded 65mpg on a run and over 50mpg around town. Mind, the E10 petrol resulted in a 4-6 mpg reduction plus increased emissions.
I don't think most of drove them correctly apart from the fiesta. Agree with you on the statistics, my 1.4 turbo diesel peugeot gets 65 to 70mpg on a motorway run and 50mpg around town. The cars in this video would have probably been fine if they did 55-60 mph consistently with little to no breaking or accelerating or funny tactics.
Slipstraming is cheating since you won't be able to do that in a real world setting. Looks like it didn't help her anyway. Interesting to me how Brits use miles per gallon to measure fuel economy. Is the gallon they're using different than an American gallon?
sorry but a BMW with the same weight and size of the prius cannot have 51MPG us gallons. there are some fast diesels but when it comes to economy the hybrid have the advantage also all your city in europe smell like shit(diesel) the pollution i high in my city i breath clean low emission air
"i'm driving the smart cdi, and i'm gonna win because i'm gonna drive it flat out for an hour" haha
I had one of those, I went on a day out sitting at 60mph and managed over 80mpg !
Why would you not use ALL petrols?
LMAO Goodwin = talking on helium :D
a diesel Ariel Atom is the way to go LOL
He he he he

Wish we had the option of so many small cars in North America.
It's funny how the new fiesta ECOnetic does 65 mi per US gallon, It is not allowed to be sold in the States.
Why not?
MannyFresh1x Because in europe they care about how much you pollute per KM, while in the usa they cara about Parts per million of the exhaust gases. +SalveMonesvol Ohhhh ok. Thanks for explaining :).
+SalveMonesvol Makes perfect sense...... if the intention is to protect sales of domestic gas guzzlers and kill sales of much more efficient imports.
soundseeker63 But they could have economical domestic cars!
I think the Fiesta and 1 series do have an advantage, especially since they have far better handling than the other, you would need to slow down near have as much on the bend etc etc

I have a Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI 2017 model and managed to touch 80mpg on one journey and a long term average of 64mpg.
slipstreaming lol
I know XD
dumb question.... is there a 1 series turbo diesel? and is it available across the pond(canada)?
XJ6 TDVi?
haha toyota prius. you aint more efficient than a bmw m3 e92
Thank you! It's really interesting
Sorry, but I average 60 with my 2.2TDCi Mondeo Mk3 when constantly driving 80Mph/120Kmh
yeah but what about with braking and accelerating when it comes to corners
Thank you !
surely slip streaming makes a mockery of a serious test?
were is that theme song from??
they destroy the fuel pumps?
Conventional well designed petrol and diesel wins over the silly hybrid systems. That's all i care about. (Smart Car shouldn't count as a car)
+Alex Deng Did you miss it when both hybrids were three times larger than any other car tested?
+Alex Deng Hybrid cars are designed for city driving, where they can rely on electric power most of the time (ie. when the car is stationary or moving slowly). If you drive at a constant and fairly high speed the car can only rely on its thermal power like everything else.
+trueleech It is so refreshing to read a comment that is actually right. Good job!
Maybe McClaren, Porsche, Ferrari, and all of the teams in F1 could learn a thing or two from the Ford Fiesta...
they drove in too different ways for this to be a good comparison....
Was this test with diesel engine or petrol too? I saw the green petrol cans and I am questioning.
I don't think they approached it in a serious manner. Otherwise how BMW outlasted the other much smaller cars? That doesn't look right.
Such small Fiesta in diesel looks just ridiculous
i searched for a lot of such videos, everyone promotes the brand they like and every country pushes the badges that bring them money , it was never about the fuel consuption.
Good vid
@basketballfrogy did u notice it lost too?
I guess I didn't realize that a small diesel would get that good of milage. Very nice. Too bad they are the exception in the states and not the rule.
My 2021 Nissan Micra Acenta (1800 miles old) is recording an average of 62.1 mpg today at 55-65mph - two adults.
I got this recommended. How and why tho
that was silly race because the speed of each car was different, if they were all going flat out then the race would make sense.
Smart car wins, 'cause it only cost $10k to buy NEW! Wonder how much the BMW or the hybrid car cost new?

What! No Honda Jazz/Fit?
You had to compare only Diesel with diesel and petrol with petrol, it makes ni sense there
+Adricol0 they compared hybrids with diesels... but I get your point
then keep your polo or gol or wherever diesel you have
they need to bring these cars to the us
All this really proves is that driving style makes more of a difference than what car you drive. Atleast the people at TG got that correct!
Try again with petrol engines!!!
Small diesels are coming to the U.S. -- FINALLY. Audi's A3 TDI joins the VW Jetta TDI this year. Now, hopefully Honda, Ford, Toyota, Nissan and GM will follow suit.
done, assasins on his way ;)
I was quite surprised to see the prius come in last, since its always the car people talk about when it comes to being the most fuel efficient

Ford has a Peugeot engine. PSA makes the best diesel engines.
@stcywll I wouldn't say popular but its more popular for VWs then other companies that have diesels.. most vdubs I see are still 2.5 or turbos
I'll take the M5 option... LOL!
so basically the top gear economy race, but less exciting

can anyone tell me how to transform 59.4 mpg to ...liters/100 km ? Thank You !
Google
4.79/100km
*Cough*T-o-p- -G-e-a-r- -R-i-p- -O-f-f*Cough* :D
???
Diesel ftw
Agreed, if it was five years ago, in 2015 PHV is the ultimate
Feeble attempts, my wife's Suzuki Swift 1.3 tdi easily does 64 mpg, slightly better if really careful. as for a unrealistic, flat, traffic n junction free airfield, well make your own guess.
@Corbiel No
bring the fiesta to the states and all of the other diesels
Haha, Goodwin is a brilliant journalist after reading Autocar for decades, but I can sort of see why he is not on TV.......sorry Colin!
until it rains and you have to carry loads of stuff...
@aznterrorist52 VW Diesels are popular in Canada!
I don't think flat out is best for economy. Would be more useful if the cars did same speed.
Yes I agree, if they all did say 50mph maximum, still drive for the hour then we would get a better economy comparison. No point doing it with everyone at different speeds.
5!!!! F*CK YEAAAH! lol
i liked it better when topgear did it with super cars
you all notice that the prius is the only midsize here and the smart is not even a car.
you all also notice that the prius will beat all those cars in the city with regular gas and with four adults in confort right
wrong, they develop the engines in joint-venture
@UnIngerPierdut It's 3.97 liters/100 km

Wow. 6 small cars at a race track got very good fuel economy. And we Americans wonder why our Hummers keep running out lol
LOL slipstream.... hahaha
Well, sorry mr fancypants.
Smartcar looks like covered wheelchair.
GC ....
What?
I average 70 mpg in my 1L petrol Aygo. With my last tank I got 77mpg.
I would cry in aygo to small to noisy no way
Im genuinely curious about that. Ive driven a lot of them long distance and never managed more than 50mpg.

they break too easy...and theyre on average, not so fuel efficient.
What rubbish!, The smart CDI would have easily won had the driver not driven flat out the whole way.
Correct. The three cylinder TD engine is a gem. Tough little thing, I had one and never got less than 60mpg, best was over 80mpg on a run to Scotland
i see iphone x notch

VW Golf 1.4TSi is way better
nephews daily commute to work in Perth WA, he gets less than 4L/100km and is averaging about 3.8L/100km on some days
the prius is the most practical and the biggest car in this test so even though it didnt have the best mileage its still a win
