Fun times👍🏼☀️🏖. My wife has flown our Baron from Portland Oregon down to Key West several times now. It’s a super fun trip. One time when we left Key West, she was talking with ATC and we flew out and around the Island groups to the west. Boca Grande Key, Marquesas Keys, and the Dry Tortugas (the fort there was cool to look at from the air as we circled from a distance). If you have the time, it’s definitely worth the tour in a Baron🤙🏼.

I've never been to the Keys, so this is going to be the best day of my life, lol. I can't wait! It was -6° here this AM. I'm just about done with all of this!! THANKS for sharing - beautiful place! Definitely agree with your ditching area assessment. I’ll take water every time. I worked several water crashes/ditching of small and large aircraft while in the USCG. Unfortunately anything but a slow landing with minimal swells usually ends badly.

while you make a valid point about suitability of ditching vs swamp landings...the water where the Valuejet DC9 crashed in the swamp was about waist deep...but it augered in almost straight nose down and buried itself in and under the mud floor

Enjoyed your images and commentary regarding the situation at 50 feet of altitude during departure. I’ve heard you call out 84 knots, is that your Vr speed? I would be very interested in asking you to call out when you achieve blue line as well. I am curious about the time factor between rotation and blue line on your typical departure in the Baron. Thank you.

While I have been to Florida a few times, grandparents on both sides lived there, I've never made it much further down than Orlando My father DID get to visit NAS Key West back in October of 1962 for a couple of weeks when he was in the Navy Reserve flying the old S-2F Trackers by Grumman. He wasn't a Naval Aviator, although he was a pilot. He was a sensor operator onboard, and they, at that time, were looking for Russian submarines headed into Cuba
Kris, I asked in your other recent video about your licenses and ratings. I didn't realize you were a LearJet Captain, so I was wondering, are you an ATP? Also, are you a CFI/II/M? Obviously, you are at least a Commercial pilot with a multi rating, that's obvious.

Could you send me one of those debauches... we don't have any in New Mexico :) To your point about ditching in the Everglades vs the water... it's kind of the same here. The smooth desert isn't :o) Now that I've been flying a retractable gear aircraft (Cutlass... C172RG) I understand what you're saying. Positive rate, gear up (dump the drag), gain altitude. Altitude is your friend, especially when flying off of a mesa top over a city. The overrun area is at about 60 degrees down up here if you takeoff to the east and rougher and steeper to the west.

  • @wilson4328

At that airport, you had a lot of grass after the end of the runway. I think you could have easily set it down and rolled through the grass, past the end of the runway, and walked away.

I think a while back I may have asked about that. That made me laugh when Kim messed up the read back. I had the number, and I was saying, 2. Do you know what the Bend is, Kim, The Turn. 😂 I bet people have mixed up that runway more than once. Nice landing!

To be fair about that plane crash....It crashed at speed nose first into the ground. Even in the waters of the gulf, that will most likely be fatal.
The plane did disintegrate as ground sonar turned up no large sections remaining. There is actually a memorial you can visit but its a few miles from the actual crash site.

Used to fly for the airline that ValueJet morphed into. We also had a crew member that was one of the surviving crew from the Eastern 411 tragedy too. She had some scary tales... Question for you two: you have a radar altimeter on board, which is rather rare for a small piston airplane. Do you make CAT 2 approaches? I don't suppose the new 5G rollout notams affect you much?

when Valujet crashed they were doing over 500 mph. the crew didn't even know they were about to crash. if you do an emergency landing in the glades, you would have better survivability then they did if you were landing as opposed to crashing in a nose down, high speed attitude!
