These are the type of videos I hope are making a difference in aviation enthusiasm (Steveo, Swayne, MrAviation, Matt, etc). The GA has been on a decline far too long, so maybe videos like these can get younger pilots engaged and in the cockpit. My personal opinion is that this is the best medium to generate that interest with today's tech engaged kids/young adults. Gone are the days of standing at the airport fence, dreaming about flight. Keep up the good work Matt!

One thing that decreases flying in europe is that a flying hours costs like at least 175$ wet + with your normal PPL license you don't get night VFR included so you can add another 6-8k$ to the already horrendous cost of getting the PPL itself

I used to fly charter around the bahamas. To fly VFR you dont really need to talk to nassau as long as you stay either outside of their oddly shaped control area, or under 1200ft. You can squawk VFR everywhere you go really. Also the flight plan that they say you need isnt really an issue either. Its just like in the US with a vfr flight plan (you can either have one or not). All nassau normally wants is your point of departure and plane type and they will always give you a code unless they are insanely busy, which doesnt happen often.
    Awesome video!

    • @mattguthmiller
      @mattguthmiller  7 лет назад +9

Yeah, the problem was that our entire route fell within their control area...and they were busy...

Behind every successful man is an amazed woman, I can tell by the way Rachel looks at you! That's the way we do the Bahamas, low key, no 5 star crap, you visited the real Bahamas, the people really make the island what it is. Tried doing the islands the high-dollar route and it was stuffy, uppity and boring, walking down a road in the islands you meet amazing people.

Probably! But we'd all done this before, so it was really just a refresher, and we were a little rushed on the ground so the air seemed like a more attentive environment

Attention whiners. Yes, flying is expensive. So is golf, fishing, and say, the hot rod hobby. I started flying in 1973 (I was about 21), and didn't get my license until I was about 28. But I got it. 1 stinking hour at a time.
I remember the first time I was outraged at what someone had spent on their hot rod. The guy was just a blue collar machinist, and in about 1975 his Nomad made the cover of Hot Rod Magazine (or some such). He said he had spent more than $40,000 on the car, and he did a lot of the work himself! $40K in 1975 would be about $186K, today.
    He was not unusual.
How much is a set of 28" wheels and tires? A really nice custom paint job can easily cost $10-$20K. Just a chromed out engine compartment can set you back $5,000. A really strong custom engine may easily cost $15-$25K and more. None of this takes into account the cost of the car you are customizing. A pos Mustang convertible that needs everything can cost $10K or more.
If you are working, you can find the money, if you want it badly enough. If you can't... work harder.

Sweet video. . .Most truly don't realize the awesome appeal the Bahamas has for the general aviation community. It is truly appealing. I can't count the numerous times I spent island hopping. . .even sleeping on the beach or in the plane and then flying back to the mainland. It's awesome.
Twas increasingly appealing just how much you knew about the Cape. Spent 15 years with USA before the shuttle program ended and I went a different direction. Spent countless hours in the VAB. . .on the pad. . .and PTT to the MCC.

Colin,s dad here. Your video reminded me of my first visit to Rock Sound Eleuthera back in 1978 when I flew several friends on a tour of the islands. loved it, especialy a restaurant on North end in the back of a little bat, great lobster appetizer and outstanding food all around. The Rock Sound International Airplane Patch was much smaller and was straight in from the water. the club was nice and was one of the best islands to visit. (Get some Eluthera Pineapple Rum, Dino-Mite...). I had a Cessna Stationair and a Beech Queen Air (Pre King Air, Recip engines rather than TurboProp.). I miss flying dreadfully.

Hey one thing, you might try to listen to a weak radio signal and shortly turn the ignition off, since I believe most of the noise is coming from your ignition circuit ... you may look for shielded high voltage cables to fix this ... but be aware that a moist shielded ignition cable is more prone to fail if the isolation has tiny cracks.

I discovered your channel last week and I think that you're my favorite aviation channel on youtube. I obviously watch the big channels in aviation, but you bring a chill vibe to the cockpit that calms people and reassures them that general aviation is not rocket science and is actually very very fun. I was surprised to see you fly out of Lawrence a lot !!! I fly out of Plum Island airport and have been to Lawerence too many times to count. I have a few videos on my channel of me flying out to Concord, Portland, and around Plum Island back when I was training, but my GoPro broke once I got my PPL (back in 2015) Since then I've done many flights with friends, like some of your videos, but I haven't gotten IFR yet, or gone the distance you have gone in some of your videos, and have definitely never even touched class B airspace. You're cool, calm, and collected, and that's unique in the community of pilots on youtube. I'm not sure if there would be any way to meet up and go for a flight, considering Lawerence is a 10 minute flight from me, but if there ever was it would be really fun to pick your brain.

Lol there is plenty of enthusiasm among young people. However, a plane like your flying is probably 300,000 dollars. Fuel is 5 dollars a gallon, and a bonanza burns it a rate of 15 gallons per hour. That is why there is a decline in general aviation. Such a huge cost for what is pretty much just having fun.

Thanks! It's actually basically the same, just that in the Nassau control area, you have to file a VFR flight plan (but maybe only when they're busy?)

This was really great, thanks! Made me check the distances from the best Northern European beaches to the nearest airfields. That will be next summer, though; before that, there's going to be winter flying over snow covered lakes & forests. :)
Also, kept waiting to see steveo1kinevo's C208 on one of the aprons...

Note to photographers using professional gear...
Be sure to completely turn off any type of image stabilization (in camera body or even for lenses) when flying. Somehow the vibration of the plane and other factors can easily cause most any type of image stabilization to fail within a rather short amount of time. I've already seen it happen with numerous camera types/names such as; Nikon, Canon, Sony, Sigma, etc...
It can easily be one of the most expensive items to repair (outside of the sensor itself), and is an item never covered by a warranty.

I would suggest to include info on landing/parking/tie-down fees, if any, as well as gas prices for the airports visited. Great video!

Another great video Matt. Thanks for taking the time to do this. BTW, if you don't mind my asking, what was the fuel cost on this trip and did you have any landing/airport "fees" at any of the airports?

16:46 Why are you reporting your altitude as a flight level?
