Hyundai i20N and Hyundai i30N: Two different takes on the N car

  • Hyundai's sporty N brand has been with us for a few years now, ever since the introduction of the i30N, where the Korean firm basically took all sorts of high-performance gadgetry - such as a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, limited slip differential, adaptive suspension, launch control and a switchable exhaust - and wrapped it all up in a familiar-yet-eye-catching hatchback body.
Today, however, it feels like the N brand is taking another step forward in its evolution. The i30N has been comprehensively overhauled and improved with a recent facelift, while other N models are being brought in to join it.
Enter the i20N, a supermini-sized take on the N-car, and a very different one at that. Granted it doesn't have quite as much gadgetry or power lurking beneath, but it does have the fact that it's smaller, lighter and several thousand pounds cheaper working in its favour.
In this CarGurus UK video feature, Rebecca Jackson explains what our two fresh-faced N cars have in common, the ways in which they're different, how well each of them fulfils the high-performance N-Car brief, and how each compares to its toughest rival.

There are two wrong statements. Cruise Control and Blind Spot Monitoring are available in the I20N. The Blind Spot Monitoring is part of the assistance package of the I20N and the Cruise Control is already Part of the normal I20 and my I20 also has this feature.

Many thanks for sharing Rebecca, a great highlight review of two fun cars. If I had the room and could justify a second car I think the i20N would be the one, it sounds like a Jack Russel terrier of a fun car but maybe as you say could be a little to much for a daily driver in a busy commute where the i30N maybe the less fun but more practical car. Top review of both cars Rebecca. Thanks for sharing.

I am a bit surprised that you think that the i20N might be frustrating as a daily driver. My partner, who is 60, has a phantom black i20N as her daily commuter. This involves either one or two 150 mile round trip motorway commutes as well as more routine driving. With its manual handbrake and gearbox, plus decent pace, she thinks that it is terrific and she averages well over 40 ….. 45 mpg on long runs. At £25K it would be hard to find anything as engaging at this price point, particularly since the Fiesta ST is being discontinued.

Got an I20N last week . Did test drive the 8 speed auto I30N .. too big for what I wanted coming from Suzuki Swift Sport . And I guess it likes a drink as well . The Fiesta , well it's just different , good handling but the Fiesta is just simply boring . The Gti Polo is very conservatived and overpriced in Australia . So I20 it was . The ride yes is jiggly on moutain Roads buts that's life in a true hot hatch The Gamma engine pulls ok and of course the exhaust note and the modes. It's screams for attention . It turns head for those 'Who know ' what it is . The Polo and the Fiesta just 'blend ' into the crowd, don't sound as exciting and in the case of the Polo , overpriced with ridiculous haptic touch controls and an DSG automatic which I would never trust . So after being in Suzuki Swift Sport land since 2016 it gets my pick ..... and my wallet

Plan is to keep my other ep3 type r for old school analogue fun and sell the swift and the BMW to fund the i20N.

Well the tech doesn't compare at all Its streets ahead of the Swift . Seats aren't as 'huggy' but they do the job nicely

Think I am decided full black ( I’m older and prefer the stealth look) with Bose , the swift was great on a trackday at the ring last October however the power difference became almost dangerous in places as newer cars are so much quicker, the i20 will make up that difference plus 5yrs worry free motoring , cheers again

@Toastfrenzy3 I've had it just over a year now. Had to wait until September instead of march. I love it, can't fault it at all. The only thing that was negative was the Pirelli P zero tyres. They were absolutely useless, and I had to change them after 7 thousand miles. I don't find it small in the rear. There is plenty of room for what I use it for. I've had an audi TT mk2, and that was small and non functioning really in the rear. None of my passengers have complained. I'm 52 and I've had a lot of different cars. This one has been the best so far.

Watching this video has made me feel even happier that I still have my Mazda 3 MPS Gen 2 which is still pretty standard apart from a few simple upgrades - Spec wise obviously both these N cars have 2022 latest technologies but the Mazda has a lot of the important stuff anyway as it was pretty well equipped back in 2011 which is the year mine was made. It still looks like new, performance is superb I get 30 mpg on average which drops to 25 mpg when using it harder. It looks like everything is heading for electrification soon and £34k is not on my radar anymore. Nice pair of cars though.

The i30N was always hamstrung by its high kerb weight (for it's class), the i20N was very obviously made with agility and maneuverability in mind - which is why it's almost unanimously revered as the better N car. The fact the i30N is no longer the class bargain it once was, is considerably more costly to run on top, and has a very bland interior in comparison, it's no wonder so many are flocking to the smaller, cheaper car (including me!).

The i20N is the better car for the Value if u ask me. It has a better Interieur and it isnt less fun to drive. BUT its 10000€ cheaper 👌

Sadly they are both so plain looking, with those 'max power' red bits only adding tackiness.

Rubbish….my i20N is an amazing daily car and a hot hatch should feel firm. Other reviews are more true and less ST and GTI by us.

No they haven’t. There’s never ever been an i10N. You’re confusing it with the i10 N-Line which has never ever been marketed as a full on N car like these 2. It’s just N styling and a few very mild suspension tweaks in the same way you get on M-Sport cars at BMW.
