I went to an airsoft place once as a teenager, and after our session was over, some soldiers came in for the time slot after ours (don't know what branch or unit) and they offered to do one round with us, all of us against all of them. The scenario was over in like a minute or two. They just swarmed in with, well, military precision and took us all out like it was nothing. Humbling experience.

But I think airsoft is fun because it's like war without the risk y'know? Get to shoot people, shoot guns, throw nades, etc and you don't actually die. I think taking it seriously adds a hell of a lot *MORE* fun in airsoft because of the way you add the professionalism or actual thought into what you are doing rather than just going for kills.

Unfortunately I had the distinct privilege of playing against a group of retired U.S. Rangers when I signed up for a game of paintball. I was teamed up with a bunch of regular folk from all over the world for a day of paintball at a facility located in a forest (we had never seen or played with each other). The game organizers decided to place my team against these Rangers (was quite unfair, but oh well we tried). Needless to say my group of untrained buddies were annihilated in short time by the Rangers. That day pretty much turned me off of playing paintball, that was in 1992. The day certainly could not been much fun for those men, since it was such an outmatched game, I know that I did not enjoy all the black and blue welts.

Start of the match was basically a fire hose of paint, so we couldn’t leave our position at all. They waited until we had either been picked off or our ammo ran out. It was pretty lame pay to win strategy…fine for real warfare, not much fun for a game. Airsoft was way more fun.

The way these guys play reminds me of online FPS shooters. I was a kid and playing hours a day and while it was not remotely realistic it did basically in the end require the same thing. Just intensity of the pressure you put on the enemy and just keep moving and pressing. Lingering was a great way to die.
I moved onto Arma and its pretty hard to be that fast with such clunky controls and realistic physics. Strangely the least realistic shooters in highly unrealistic maps designed literally to be a meat grinder over in a few minutes seems most like how these guys played this airsoft match.

I know its really about the mindset going into it as a whole, but when you have someone get in your face because you got the better of them that one time can be pretty demoralizing. I know we have to just look past it and try to move on with your game, but I wish we didn't have to even have these confrontations in the first place. I think if more people walk on to an airsoft game with the mindset of "I know I'm not the best at all times, but I am here to have fun with my friends and my team." Had a squad of 10th Mountain guys come back from a deployment, half of them had Ranger tabs and their squad leader was in 3/75....he taught us SOOO much and split his squad up so that each side would have good experienced guys.
