    I just saw an ad the other day for a 12-24mm lens deal, and I highly recommend the wider-than-16mm options if anyone hasn't tried it. The FOV is unreal, and the distortion can really be used for some great creative options. This 14mm image is a great example!

    • @eddiegutierrezjr6226

      One of my favorite features from Nikon is the distortion correction they apply when shooting ultra wide. Some like the extreme distortion (I think of Marc Adamus immediately) but if you like something with perspective correction, definitely give the Z series a try.

    If you ever decide to give up photography you won't have any problem with finding a new avocation, Thomas. You are a natural used car salesman. Don't know if you could make the sales presentation to other people but you did a fine job of selling a "new" van to yourself. And the dealership did a great "puppy dog" sale on you. Happened to me, too. I took my ten year old Outback in for routine maintenance and oil change and they gave me an almost new Outback courtesy car to drive for a day or two. Wasn't long before I had a new upscale Outback with all the bells and whistles. Back to photography: that must be a very popular tree. I've seen it before in other publications. But, how many photogenic trees are in Yorkshire? You did a very credible job with it but your focus and excitement was on whether to buy a new van.... and feel that dagger in your back at the first of each month. And then having to go through all the work of completely outfitting another one so it is usable for your purposes. Might want to keep the one you have for another year or two or look for a model that is more nearly set up for the type of camping you do. Not a recommendation, just something to enter into your DMP. PS: I had to laugh when I saw that it was Gavin calling you. 🤣

    Hi Thomas. Great video. I have owned a couple of the L400 Delicas and now own a D:5. I did eventually get tired of the on-road capabilities of the L400, the diesel version was just horrible to drive, slow and sluggish. Then I got a petrol V6 which went like train - thought it was miles better than the diesel, but still not much fun on the road, and terrible for long distance. The lack of cruise control is a big issue. The D:5 - as you say - drives more like a car. I have the 2.4 4WD petrol version and it gets about 30mpg (althought he display is on L/KM). I really like it, and actually prefer the look of it to the L400. The bed configuration isn't great though - the seats don't fold flat, I don't think even a memory foam mattress would help. I've been in touch with Edward at AMV about some campervan options or might make some changes myself. 🤘

  • @the_life_and_times_of_tim
    @the_life_and_times_of_tim Год назад +3

    The D5 drivetrain is based off the Outlander soft roader where the L400 is based off the Pajero/Shogun. That’s why the D5 drives much nicer on road. When a trail get proper tough the L400 is much, much better, like the ones you did with the 4x4 club/green laning while ago.

  • @CalvinBroadhurst
    @CalvinBroadhurst Год назад +4

    Thomas, your original videos of the fit out for your van came out right around the same time that I was looking for a van myself... so I took a lot of inspiration from what you did with your van (Although mine, being built mostly from plywood, looks a lot more amateur than what you achieved).
    When looking at vans I originally wanted the L400 also, but after weighing up the various factors (age, features, etc) I decided to go with the D:5 (2008) model instead... and must say that I do not regret that decision at all. Sure, there's a couple things the L400 had which the D:5 lacks, such as many having rotating captains seats as standard (really wish the D:5 had these) plus the true low range 4WD. In reality though I'm not going to use it for full on mud plugging and the D:5 has been easily able to get me everywhere that I have needed to go, and in much more comfort than the L400 would have.
    I've clocked up a good few kms in the D:5 and find it almost as nice to drive as a car on road (let's face it, no van will never handle as well as a sports car) while still being able to handle going off road on some of the 4WD tracks here in NZ without a problem. I have the back fitted out so that I can still keep the middle row of seats installed (for when I need to move people) but then quickly fold them out of the way to have a bed and bench etc - although am often tempted to rip out the seats and do a permanent camper setup.
    Thanks so much for your videos about the van (and also photography of course)... they are both inspirational and educational - and very much appreciated.

    Very nice video! The D5 looks cool too. One factor that might explain some of the cornering difference is that your own van seems to have much more agressive tyres, which obviously helps off-road but can reduce grip and stability in on-road cornering.

Third, just a fun fact, it was built in Gifu, where they also built Pajero and Military vehicles.

    As usual another great video.
    Now as for the D5 they are a awesome bit of kit , I have had mine for almost 2 years and done 70,000 km and it being grate and way more capable than I expected, I owned and operated a business build touring 4w4 here in Australia and have always owned dedicated 4wds but wanted something different and I have absolutely no regrets in the D5 and I will build another one with a poptot in a couple of years. Anyone that bags the d5 usually have not driven or owned one and just write them off, just don't listen to them.
    Take care and thanks for the vids

      Also stay away from any D5 older than 2010 as they have bearing problems in the transmission.

    Another excellent video. So happy to see you vlogging in front of others, I know that is a struggle for you. You always give the best composition advice and this was no exception. Keep your current van, this one is too small for you even if it drives like a Maserati

    It's a nice looking van, good size, some of the transit style vans are just a little too big and the smaller vans just not enough.

    Having owned a Delica Series 1, 2.8 diesel LWB I too am torn as to my next vehicle. VW or the Delica D5 . The VW has considerably more interior space however the off road ability is limited unless major modifications are done and even then it can never really be a rugged off-roader. The Delica series 1 and 2 are a hard act to follow, if kitted out with suspension upgrades and good tires they will go anywhere . Mine also had a gearbox computer modification allowing manual selection of all gears and manual clutch lockup. This made a dramatic improvement in the highway drivability and off road ability. Why this wasn't a standard feature I don't know . The big problem with them was however the lack of space inside, they are just too small . Look big on the outside but unfortunately very narrow and the floor is very high . I might go look at a D5.

    It was awesome that you were still able to continue to do the video even with the unexpected guests. Thomas, what do you think of the new Generative Fill feature of Photoshop? Would you be using it to edit your photos?
