I find that beatsaber is great at this, as all the best maps lay out notes so your arms naturally move towards the next (for example, having up then down notes rather than a bunch of up notes in a row)
Personally, I think the staff and notes were meant to emulate the idea of reading sheet music, because when you try playing music from a sheet of paper, the notes ain't moving for you no more
the "judgement line moving with the music" is actually a pretty common subgenre of rhythm game, the most well known one is prolly Cytus on mobile, or DJMAX Technika on the arcade/mobile. it's indeed quite daunting if you're used to playing VSRGs (vertical scrolling rhythm game), but you'll get used to it pretty quickly.
As someone who plays instruments, the controls of this game actually blew me away. Particularly on Mugi sometimes it mimics swapping chords on a keyboard surprisingly well. The sliding bar setup is frustrating but I'm a dark souls fan so I like the extra challenge.

I'm a massive K-ON fan. I watched the anime around 10x, learned all the songs on the guitar and even got to the point of traveling to Japan and visiting every place that served as background for the series. The scenery is mainly from Kyoto (there's an episode the characters travel to Kyoto, but in actuality they were there all along), but the school is based on an old building at Toyosato town. That school is something like the K-ON Mecca, with lots of stuff the fans brought. You can see the corridors, the staircases with the rabbit and turtle statures, the classrooms, the club room. Everything is exactly like in the anime. There's also a little souvenir shop managed by a very nice lady that even offered me some coffee when I told I was a brazilian. With that being said, I also got the chance to find a second-hand copy of that PSP game at some shop and my totally unbiased opinion about the gameplay is that it is very, very bad. (read the manga, btw. they go to college.)
I remember playing this shortly after release and had a great time with it, at the time I didn't understand Japanese but managed to perfect every single song in the game on the hardest difficulty. Too bad I didn't understand the little stories at that time but the costumes were super cute. I would love to try the arcade version.

I haven't watched k-on but man thia game was really addictive when i played it in my psp. It's really fun even though i don't usually play rhythm games
My familiarity to this game was from a feature in a Megami Magazine issue in their video game section. This is my first time seeing this game in motion.
Like you said, it's easier to play with a handheld. In that aspect like the persona rhythm game. Wouldn't recommend it on big screens. Love that they focus the instrument depending on the character. I still got it on my vita and play it when I'm in the mood for k-on songs. Wish I knew people that also have it, 'cause I've always wanted to try the multiplayer.
I played this on a sizable TV through my PS3 back in the day, so I never really had much difficulty adapting to how the note path fluctuates. I always thought that the Persona Dancing rhythm games were the most difficult to follow with their note path starting from the centre and moving towards a circle around the edge of the screen.
tbh I liked this game and still playing today and yes the sheet music is the biggest problem. Also if you complete every song with S you unlock a weird bonus which makes the songs much more difficult...and the maid outfits
You can play the HD version on PPSSPP by extracting the PS3 version of the ISO and run it. This is possible because the game itself is still made for PSP but with HD textures and PS3 runs it through backwards compatibility.
i've gotten this game on the ppsspp app on my pc and i've kinda mastered it tbh, its really fun but there's some things i wish they had but its a ps3/psp game so meh. the best feature in this game is Yui telling me the time cause why look at the bottom Right of my screen when i can just ask Yui what time it is. (i've gotten addicted to this game and im a mugi main...)
I think one thing you have to do when playing character games is to accept their limitations in good spirits and not try to stare for the flaws. Especially if it started out as a PSP game - how many more seconds do you think they can add to the loop before they run into the inevitables of limited space and production time?
I google translated the band name you made. Apparently it translates to "Rainy season Opinion". Though it could be wrong, and I'm still working on my Japanese.
It's true though, like the game just doesn't function. For one it's on the wii so it involves movement which is fine whatever, cool. But Here's the kicker, almost none of the inputs actually register half of the time. So you're there just waving the wii remote, pointing in every direction possible like a insane person, and to the people who casually walk up on you without knocking on doors. They'll just be there silently judging you as you're transforming back into a monkey. I don't know man, It's just really frustrating. I've played a bunch of "bad" games during my existence on this planet. But this is the one I just can't stand, I wish to go back in time and throw a pipe bomb in the vents of the studio who developed that garbage. 0/5 IGN wouldn't recommend, looking at static on a crt tv would be more fun than that game. Fucking hell I hate it
at 13:38 with what you were saying and the game play in the background i for a second thought you meant “i wish they added dark souls gameplay to the k-on game”
I loved played this on PSP so currently I'm playing using a emulator on my smartphone, the version I downloaded is the PS3 edition textures lol. I still wondering why they didn't make an improved version with the PS3 graphics, the game still looking good!
also i think that k-on isn't the first game that moves the cursor and keeps the notes in place, or i guess with the note placement being in different places. project diva does some weird shit, and osu seems like hell to play
@@Totaraum the K-on mod is amazing, but I wish mio could use their bass left handed. Unfortunately guitar hero doesn’t have any left bass guitarists in the base game so that sucks
I played this on an emulator on my old Samsung. Game was kinda hard using the on screen button overlay that seemed to have a slight delay. Pretty cool hearing some music that wasn't in the anime tho 👍
This was a good review and pretty informative. I learned some new stuff today. And yeah, I'd say a 6/10 is about right. Regarding your point about the characters being lifeless, that was something I noticed right away. It felt especially noticeable when you were going through the dress-up mechanic actually. It was also jarring to see they had a version of the original ending music video with Azusa in it, which is all I've ever wanted in this life, only for them to not have the amazing outfits from that music video and to look devoid of emotion. And since you brought the animations (or lack thereof) up, I can't unsee it. Although I'm more forgiving of that. The mischaracterization is something I'm less forgiving of. That's pretty disappointing. These are actually some really deep and complex characters who best shine when you can see the nuances of their personalities and dynamics rise to the surface. And it's especially strange given, as you said, the game clearly has love for the source material poured into it. I can tell the developers were fans of the show. So I'm not sure how they got the characters so wrong. I get the lack of expressiveness and animation, as that's its own thing, but the characterization is just about being faithful or not. Regardless of that, none of this stuff completely ruins the charm of the game for me, at least not as a rhythm game collectathon. I'd still be willing to play through it just for the music and collectibles. Although I do wish we got a Western release so I wouldn't have to rely on Google Translate (which, as you demonstrated, sucks ass) or learn a new language just to (barely) understand what's going on. I do wonder how much of these issues are resolved or at least not so bad in the PS3 Remaster, if any? From how you described it, it doesn't sound like it changed a whole lot. I do gotta wonder though... assuming the PSP's smaller screen did influence the development of the sheet music layout, is the layout any different on the PS3 version? Because that would be using a larger screen. Anyway, I hope we get access to those arcade games some day. They look pretty fun too. Dunno how you'd get that card mechanic to work on an emulator though, which is sad because it is a really neat mechanic.
I’m gonna need the entire game Google Translated now, please. But seriously, this game is pretty average, but it’s great for one purpose: learning the songs on your instrument of choice. The boosted volume for your chosen character is perfect for nailing the part. I personally often have trouble picking out Azusa’s rhythm or Mugi’s keyboards, so this feature is a fantastic aid. Worth downloading just for that if you want to learn even a single song on the game’s playlist.
I never get a perfect all "critical" score in rythm games but I never miss a note and I never get a rank under S. Otherwise, this rythm game give me the desire to get my PS3 out of the closet and play to this K-ON game.
Thanks for the video. I stumbled upon this game because I love rhythm games and love k-on. I thought it was fine, i found it pretty clever that every song has 5 distinct tracks for each of the girls and that mio plays the d-pad because shes a lefty was a neat detail to me. I did not understand anything as i don't speak japanese, but seeing an item that looked like 2 loose pages and getting exactly the outcome i expected when giving that item to Ritsu made me real happy. But i do agree with you on the sliding key. Thats one thing where they should have broken from the "it simulates reading sheet music"
Btw A few months ago a patch came out that translates the game into English, there are still some bugs in some texts, but now at least you can understand things better unlike using the google translator. ruclips.net/video/qU5uPW_asmM/видео.html
You might actually not be as bad as you think, PPSSPP and all emulators for that mater introduce a not insignificant amount of input lag. its not too noticeable on most games but when it comes to rhythm games its enough to make the game feel pretty hard to play. i can near prefect extreme songs in project diva on psp but i struggle to clear even normal on PPSSPP. its just something to note when playing rhythm games, might be able to use latency correction settings in game if it has any but portable system games usualy dont.
Go for it! I heard ps3 emulation has gotten a lot better in recent years. I remember I almost bricked my computer trying to run metal gear solid 4 a few years ago. Apparently that doesn’t happen anymore

Especially if it started out as a PSP game - how many more seconds do you think they can add to the loop before they run into the inevitables of limited space and production time?
11:00 I played this game for over 100 hours and haven't noticed it.
I probably wouldn't have either if I didn't stare at that static camera angle of them playing for a minute or two
This is a great video you deserve way more views & subs
Thank you! I'm glad you think so
I google translated the band name you made. Apparently it translates to "Rainy season Opinion". Though it could be wrong, and I'm still working on my Japanese.
I want this on Steamdeck
There's actually an English fan translation of this game, even for the HD hack
bro your videos are so good dude, i watched almost every vid u made during this week and last week, keep up with the good work bro
I’m glad you enjoyed them all! That means a lot. I’ll be sure to keep at it!
Not sure if youtube deleted your reply or not, but to answer your question: no, I never thought they would. Again, thanks so much for watching!
@@Totaraum it wasn't youtube it was me i thought it was a silly question, btw thanks for answering
@@poisu_ Not at all, and no problem
8:03 even K-On Houkago live had to reference the Monogatari series
9:39 "Tsuyuyoron"
Nyoron~
that's exactly what I was thinking when I put it through google translate lol
K-on music game is like a demo ver of Project Diva 2nd/extend
GOOD VIDEO, I may try out the game. Because I want to train my japanese as well
thanks, and please do! It might make good practice
hehe I modded Yui’s “Sega” line in the first Sonic the Hedgehog game
That’s awesome
Well at least it looks more fun than the Haruhi wii dance game where it doesn't fucking work.
lmao
Fucking hell I hate it
3:28, chocolate breaks my diet game more like.
too true...
K-ON songs on Clone Hero is the way to go
facts
at 13:38 with what you were saying and the game play in the background i for a second thought you meant “i wish they added dark souls gameplay to the k-on game”
Lmao
I loved played this on PSP so currently I'm playing using a emulator on my smartphone, the version I downloaded is the PS3 edition textures lol.
I still wondering why they didn't make an improved version with the PS3 graphics, the game still looking good!
This game would make a great manga
I agree. It's a real shame when brands can't capitalize on great ideas like this
i heard of this game through the guitar hero modding ocmmunity who modded houkago tea time into guitar hero world tour.
also i think that k-on isn't the first game that moves the cursor and keeps the notes in place, or i guess with the note placement being in different places.
project diva does some weird shit, and osu seems like hell to play
Yeah, I saw a lot of weird stuff while gathering footage for this video. Coincidentally, most of those crazy games were made by Sega
@@Totaraum the K-on mod is amazing, but I wish mio could use their bass left handed.
Unfortunately guitar hero doesn’t have any left bass guitarists in the base game so that sucks
@@AwkwardHypernerd413 Yeah, that might've been asking too much. It sounds like a cool mod though
I played this on an emulator on my old Samsung. Game was kinda hard using the on screen button overlay that seemed to have a slight delay. Pretty cool hearing some music that wasn't in the anime tho 👍
just saw Melee Fox in a video about K-ON 👊 brother
Melee rocks
13:27 I love this community
How is the number 2.53k amd not 253k? That video was great👍
Thank you!
This the best anime ever in my applot
I loved watching K-ON when it was on Netflix. It's not even on #Crunchyroll.
i love this game but hearing the giita ni kubittake solo makes my thumb start moving
I'm guessing it's a hard one?
@@Totaraum if you don’t have a fast thumb then yes
@@foimah I would not have a good time with that song then
this game is kinda fun
i imported this game for my psp a few years ago. played it once and never touched it again😅

I heard! I made a community post about it
You might actually not be as bad as you think, PPSSPP and all emulators for that mater introduce a not insignificant amount of input lag. its not too noticeable on most games but when it comes to rhythm games its enough to make the game feel pretty hard to play. i can near prefect extreme songs in project diva on psp but i struggle to clear even normal on PPSSPP. its just something to note when playing rhythm games, might be able to use latency correction settings in game if it has any but portable system games usualy dont.
It's hard the first time you play it, but it gets easier after you get used to it
Hello yes i have this game 👍 But i use my brothers psp that i "borrowed" and its in Japanese so i can't understand it
then we were in the same boat. It's still playable, but you have to figure out some mechanics through trial and error
I’m actually gonna get a fucking ps3 just to get this game.
1:17 The anime is obviously way better but hell yeah I'm getting that 4 manga collection 😎
Same. I was surprised when I saw that it was a thing
The game is so good but my hands get so cramped playing the psp version lol, i would recommend getting a grip for the psp
Need trying on RPCS3 - one way to play to me :3
Go for it! I heard ps3 emulation has gotten a lot better in recent years. I remember I almost bricked my computer trying to run metal gear solid 4 a few years ago. Apparently that doesn’t happen anymore
there's an English patch for hokago live tho
not when I made this video there wasn't
do not give cytus to this guy
But I'm right handed
Very epic 😎
Thanks! Speaking of which, your mods are up there too. I also watched a few comic dubs, and they’re super high quality. Keep up the great work!
@@Totaraum Thank you!!! I get so happy whenever the mods get recognition! Oh and thanks for tuning into the dubs too! This was a solid video. Keep up the great work too!
great video dude. Greetings from Russia
Thank you, and greetings!

Can I ask something; If I want to try for a better point and press retry button instead of returning the menu am I losing the rewards of the last game I played? I have lots of things in my storage so I cant understand whether its adding or not.
well… it’s a 12 years old anime… what are you asking in a game from it??? the most important is the love k-on brings us
will someone please tell me where to get the rom for this game?
i've looked everywhere and each time i put it into psp it gives me an error.
where did you download the rom?
Idk if you are still watching anime nowadays but i would reccomend you to watch bocchi the rocks! A new CGDCT band anime by cloverworks. Its an anime similar to k on but very different, unique and simply amazing. The humor is amazing, the visual, and the overall music is fantastic. And its been a while since i watch an anime that made pure by passion since kyoani. I would even go as far to say its better than k on tbh
I checked out the first episode a while back, thinking of continuing it soon. Everybody is saying great things about it
@@Totaraum you definitely need to continue watching it. The attention to detail in this anime is simply astonishing
@@malvin0arifin040 Yeah, I think I found the characters to be tropey and didn't feel like going on, but then I thought about for a bit and was like "get over it and keep watching" lol
@@Totaraum i dont think you should worry for the characters being too tropey. While it looks like there is nothing really interesting about them. There is surprisingly amount of depth in each of characters. And also a really surprising amount of character development
Sorry for the long comment i love this anime a bit too much lol
@@malvin0arifin040 No need to apologize! In fact, this might've been the push I needed to give it another try today
I remember this game. K-ON! Is literally my favorite anime of all time. This game sucks. 😅
LMAO at least you're honest about it
8:01 Ayo?
I'm bored, I like k-on, I love rhythm games, do the math
For a rhythm game, you’d think it’d be as forgiving as Hi-Fi Rush, since they aren’t out to be the best band in the universe, just have a good time
what do you think is better to buy the psp version or the ps3 version?
PSP is easier to play but ps3 has more content. I’d say ps3 is best since you can just sit a little further away from the screen lol
WAIT WUT THE PS3 VER HAD EXTRA SONGS??? WHAT WERE THEY, damn you Sega and your portable to console remasters having extra content, they didn't that w the first hatsune Mike game for vita too
NEW VIDEO WHEN
