248 - The River Irwell Navigation - Our Most Scary Narrowboat Adventure Ever
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 янв 2020
- Sorry it has been so long since we last uploaded. We have had quite an eventful start to the year.
This Vlog picks up from when we were on the Manchester Ship Canal having travelled across the River Mersey from Liverpool. We are due to head up Pomona Lock and back onto the safety of the Bridgwater Canal but Michael decides that we need one more adventure before we do that. He wants to travel as far as possible up the River Irwell as we can.
We couldn't find out much information on how to do this but the friendly people from the Water Sports Centre in Salford Quays helped us out with some advise. And as we were scheduled to go up the lock we had to set off before dawn. Not ideal after two big cruises.
It turned out to be quite a scary trip as the Irwell was flowing very fast and there wasn't much room to turn the boat. As we turned we were being pushed sideways towards some bridge arches. Luckily it all worked out well and we made it, in the rain, to Castlefield Basin.
Thanks for watching and thanks for your patience while we got this vlog edited.

► FAQ
Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.
That early morning start with the lights reflected on the water was hauntingly beautiful.
It was indeed. M
Boating is great terror and excitement , water is powerful and you are not always under control.. lol. That's part of the fun
True that! M
Ah, real weather for a change. You probably hated it but I like to see that side instead of sunny lovely days. Thanks guys.
Actually didn’t mind it till right up the end, when it got down the back of my pants! M
Very interesting, history of canals around Manchester
Thanks! M
Duck! It's the Canadians! 🤣😉
Geese! M
Great u turn of a narrowboat 😁 bet the people having breakfast in the hotel were surprised to see a narrowboat come cruising by 😃
I’m sure they were... I was surprised to see them having breakfast! M
Welcome to Manchester, cradle of the Industrial Revolution! Good to see you getting into the spirit of the place - a step up. Somehow better video, better music, more heroic adventures. The Irwell at down breakfast was a wonderful scene. I mean, no one does the Irwell, everyone does the Rochdale. The Irwell used to be an unloved stream of industrial effluent that could have been the inspiration for songs like Dirty Old Town. Now this makes me want to visit the old place too - yes, I am from Manchester like so many posters here.
It’s a lovely dirty old town... we enjoyed it very much. M
So close to some brilliant pubs: Peverill of the Peak, The Knott Bar, and the Britons Protection with it’s links to Peterloo. I am part of the Manc diaspora here in Canada. I miss my home city. Ta for the glimpse of Old Trafford. Manchester is Red.
Ooh, we’ll have to try some of the pubs when we go back, later this year! Glad you liked seeing your old stomping grounds! M
I like your apperance; language, storytelling and friendness!
Thanks! Of the bunch, friendliness is probably out strong suit! M
Wow talk about die hards. You Well Hard you Two. Keep Warm Guys.
Thanks! Trying to! M
4Carl - Nice video folks, hopefully many more to come.
More on the way soon! Thanks for watching!
Tokyo drift with a Narrowboat. Omg.
Heh, Yep! M
Wow. Dam exciting but please please stay safe...
Don’t worry, I’m going to try hard not to duplicate anything like that one again! M
Manchester doing what it does best. Rain...
Keeps it quite clean! M
My ancestors emigrated from Manchester about 170 years ago. Interesting to see it, particularly from the river. It probably looked rather different in 1850. Most enjoy your vids. Cheers, and my best in the new year.
Thank you, glad you like them. I think we’d all be surprised how much would still be the same, but yes it must have been quite the place back then! M
Another top quality video. The difficulty on the Irwell shows the importance of having an anchor ready for emergencies. I ha a similar problem turning on a river, dropped the anchor from the stern and the boat turned very smartly. Keep up the good work!
Yeah, an anchor would work for a truly surprising handbrake turn! M
George's contribution to this vid? A pixelated deuce... that dude is gangster.
He really is! M
Always loved the Bridgewater Canal and cruised up there a couple of times ( have photos of Man U stadium and the last time we went up that way we literally went under the footbridge as they were leaving the match! Thank goodness Man U had won!!) That time we moored among all the willow trees ( last mooring available as it was Easter weekend and full )
Oh goodness! I’m not sure I’d have fancied being there in a match day. Still like you say, at least they had won! We were surprised at how busy Castlefield was but it totally made sense with the flight being closed
Great video, what a great turn, that looked scary.
It was! M
Foul weather gear........What a fashion statement? glad your back.
The bright yellow pants are new for this season! M
AGAIN EXCELLENT VLOG ONLY WISH ME AND MY WIFE COULD DO WHAT YOU HAVE DONE ON OUR BOAT BE LUCKY
Thank you! We feel very lucky for sure
Martin zero does some brilliant historical videos around there if you haven't seen him already. Had my heart going when you went up the river.. we used to ride tractor innertubes down there when it wasn't raining and know how fast it can get on a sunny day, it can flash flood in a downpoor , glad you made it . Let's hope for better weather for you.
To see what it can get like watch "Radcliffe asda bridge boxing day"
Good lord, I’m never going on a river that much in flood! It did surprise me how fast it picked up... glad we made the swing safely! M
You are so fortunate to have all those canals. Most of the canals in the US are no longer used. We live in Illinois where the old Illinois Michigan canal is mostly filled in and a haven for Mosquitoes. I’m told there is a canal in Arizona but have no idea where it is.
We are pretty lucky for sure!
Great video. Those geese were very noisy when we moored in the basin a few years ago.
They can honk up quite a racket! M
7:25 That's George Stephenson's bridge, the first passenger railway in the world. Martin Zero has a fair few videos about it!
We’ll have to look them up! M
DOH! Read through the comments before I posted my thoughts on this! I am sorry, I did not see your response, thanks JOtM! Oh and some wonderful content from Martin on Pomona island, ruclips.net/video/nz7BzwamKms/видео.html
Great to see you back with the vlogs. I think we would have had to be there to know how scary it was. Sorry to hear you’ve been round in circles and hope you’re on the straight and narrow now.
Thanks! Not sure about straight, but back on the narrow! M
Good to have you back again, hope it's not too long before the next one.
Yeah, sorry for the delay... unavoidable family issues intervened. Those have stabilized for the moment, so hopefully we’ll be getting back to a more regular schedule soon. M
I was a student at Salford - rather a long time ago - so it's great to see bits of Salford and Manchester from a different angle. That turn looked a bit exciting though!
A bit too exciting. It’s the most dangerous situation we have ever been in.
Awesome to see the three of you again. Happy new year
Thanks! Glad to be back! Happy New Year! M
Glad your are back and hope all is well for you in 2020. I had to resort to old fashioned TV a couple of times over the holidays :-(
You're like me, Mike, always got to push upstream all the way, till the keel touches silt (or coral or rock!)... or the banks close in so much the only way out is astern.... or the wifes "where the *$@# do you think you are going?" gets too loud to ignore.
I also love 'ferry gliding' into moorings using a strong tide ... which only seems to work 100% when nobody is watching (why is that?)...just like your unwitnessed slide into Polomo basin.
But turning in a boat lengths wide river, only 3 boats lengths upstream of a stone arch bridge, on an early morning wet Manchester (when most inhabitants would hardly notice the Irwell and its intrepid "up the Orinoco" boaters), with a 5+ knot flow, even had my cheeks twitching.
I am rather taken aback that the trams dont allow dogs... surely that's rather politically incorrect? Grown up trains allow dogs so why can't a tram?
Thanks, I wasn’t exactly hoping to scare anyone, but what I did there DEFINITELY isn’t for the faint hearted! As for the dogs, I did try and figure that one out... apparently the council’s been dead against dogs on trams for years... one or two people on there apparently REALLY don’t like dogs, for some reason. Which to me seems like an automatic reason to vote against them. M
@@MinimalList At least you did the Irwell... but thus far that's the closest I've seen you to the "oh $h1t" moment. i expect only boat owners will foresee the pending steel vs. sandstone potential. Nicely handled though, but little wonder George need his towpath ritual afterwards.
Ha... I used to think that the prolatariat vote counted for something and elections resulted demonstrated the majority will of the people.
Looking forward to the Rochy and your views on mooring in noisy Castlefield or New Islington. .. get your paintguns ready!.
Loved seeing all the beautiful lights reflected on the dark water in the early morning. Just lovely and quite unusual for narrow boat vlogs. Thank you for making this video and sharing it with us. So glad you made the turn successfully, that did look scary! 😱
It was an interesting perspective on the river... quite pretty when not blinded by rain or terror! M
Brilliant to see you both again. Such relief, life is back to normal again. Thank you for being who you are - great people. Best wishes.
Thank you! It’s never entirely normal with us, but I guess that is our normal! M
As you kept speaking about the current, all I could think of was, "They're gonna go broadside to that to turn...!"
Wasn’t much of a choice! But we made it round! M
Your cruising seems to be getting more and more perilous ,very interesting if short waterway with all it's old branches and bridges but I doubt I'll ever be enthusiastic about city centre cruising all that graffiti and general decay ,canals do seem to have a habit of showing the seedier side of a place.
I guess we don’t see graffiti as decay, so much as people trying to reclaim spaces that everyone else has decided to ignore. Especially when larger murals that take real talent start showing up. M
Hope all is well with the family now.
It’s all stabilized, for the moment, thanks. Still going to be playing out for a while, but hopefully no more surprise disruptions. M
6:25 the white building on the right is the northern home of MI5 just incase anybody is interested
Ahh, no wonder it felt so sinister! M
Impressive tiller work Michael, scary or not you handled that manoeuvre with skill and flair.
Thanks! I have gotten the hang of turning the boat about, that’s true! M
Welcome back guys, you have been missed!
Thanks! Sorry for the delay... unavoidable life events beyond our control! M
Good to see you both back on the youtubes
Thanks! Glad to be back! M
@@MinimalList we're going for a trip on the Oxford next month is there an android app you'd recommend for route planning?
After a year of binge(ish) watching I am caught up. Extremely jealous of your adventures.
Wow, that’s a lot of watching! Glad you enjoyed catching up! More adventures coming soon! M
Graffiti. The blight of urban life.
Oh, I dunno... I’ve always liked the bigger, better quality murals... never been a fan of amateurish tagging, but I can see why a derelict brick wall, otherwise unloved, can look like a canvas to a certain kind of painter. M
So good to see you both back on RUclips. What an adventure on the Irwell! Look forward to the next vlog!
Too much of an adventure for my liking! I was still half asleep! Jo
The Salford Junction Canal was very interesting, it had loading wharves underground in its tunnels. Thanks for sharing another little used corner of the network, even if it was a bit hair raising.
Gotta raise the hair if you’re gonna have a close shave! M
No apology required, glad you're back.
Thanks! M
Absolutely wonderful !!! ...I our boat world sometimes we just keep the bow upstream and idle forward but actually go backwards with the current ... but that's for wimps or when it's really sketchy ...way more fun to power downstream and go fast ... beautiful area/buildings .....thank you so much for the ride along ... definitely magical with a few water droplets on the camera !!! Very Very Cool : )
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! M
Nice to see my old city again. Yay.
Glad to show it to you! M
6:25 background track describes the three of you perfectly... The reverse J turn drift wind 😉 was close and im sure for those few seconds Micheal thought "oh ****" or similar...😱 Thank you for all the vlogs so far always looking forward to the next, stay safe.😘
Haha. Thanks for watching!
At 7:25 you go under Stephenson's bridge over the Irwell. a sort of sister bridge of one you went under on the River Weaver. The one in Manchester is part of the Manchester-Liverpool Railway (1830), the first Passenger railway in the world. Stephenson's Rocket ran over the Irwell bridge. The Dutton Viaduct over the Weaver was another Stephenson bridge for the Grand Junction Railway built 6 years later. They both have that multicolour herringbone style stonework.
One quirk of that bridge is it set the height of future railways into Manchester. All railways and stations in the centre of Manchester are raised above normal street level thanks to that bridge.
Well, we’ve got a lot to thank that bridge for, as all those elevated trains are amazing! M
Lovely to see a new video and as a bonus a route very rarely travelled let alone shown. Thank you. I hope you are feeling better now.
We’re both feeling fine, we had a family member with a bit of a medical crisis, and it pulled us away for some time. Just getting back to normal now. Glad you liked this one! M
Thanks Michael / Jo / George for the extra effort to do a very interesting Vlog and narration , All the best and cheers from a smoky OZ .
Thanks! Stay cool down there! M
I know you posted this a few days ago, but I just got the chance to sit & watch as I’ve started some pretty intense schooling. This definitely helped set the mood for my day. I love watching your videos! Glad you all are safe!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Have fun with the schooling! M
What a scary turn!!!! I have seen some youtube clips whith all sorts of boats being stuck sidewaus against bridges on both canals and rivers at places all over the world. For a moment I pictured you against that downstream bridge.
But luckily you made it!!!
I wasn’t gonna end up stuck across that bridge, if I could help it ... but it was the closest we’ve come in a while to risking it! M
Very interesting. Thanks
I loved this video. The music choice was incredible. Well done on that turn Michael. I hope you’re all well 😘😘
We’re doing well, just had some family crises that have kept Jo away from editing. She did a lovely job of cutting this one, once she had some time to herself! Happy New Year by the way! M
Minimalist are posting new videos...all is well with the world...
Yep! Sorry for the delay... we’ve had some family crises to deal with, and are only getting back up to speed now. M
@@MinimalList
No need for any explanation on my account, family always comes second. Just remember though that your YT Groupies should come third. First you ask?, well of course that's reserved for George!
Great to see manchester from another perspective
It’s definitely a different way to see a grand old city! M
Not sure if you were aware but Native Americans populated the banks of the river Irwell at one time. They were booked for a show at Belle Vue, a theme park that was just to the North of Manchester City centre. Many never returned home and if you look in some of the graveyards in and around Gorton (close to the Belle Vue site) you can see their traditional native american names on gravestones. It's quite confusing if you don't know abut the story!!
Hah, yeah that would be a strange thing to stumble across. Sounds like Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. M
@@MinimalList You're right. It was exactly Buffalo Bill's WWS. I'll see if i can dig out some photos, not mine you'll understand...I only feel that old :)
For a minute I thought stopping in Manchester, my home town, was going to be your "Most Scary Narrowboat Adventure Ever". 😃
You got the Irwell on a bad day, its not normally flowing that fast. Glad you made it to Castlefield but it seems to be always busy there. Hope we'll be treated to another vlog soon. Keep warm.
Manchester was lovely, once we’d parked up! More videos coming soon, we’re trying hard to get back on schedule. M
great vlog well worth the wait
Thanks for waiting! Had some circumstances beyond our control, but trying to get back to normal! M
Really enjoyed hearing the history of where you were cruising in this video. Thank you!
Glad you liked it! M
Brilliant, please keep up the good work.
Thanks! Will do! M
Prefer the rural scenery, but seeing the built up areas does add a interesting element. Take care and thank you
Thanks! M
I have been getting cold turkey without you guys! Hope all is good and looking forward to your adventures in 2020. 👍
What he said ...
Lol!
Davie x
Thanks! We had a bit of confluence of crises that have kept Jo from editing and uploading. We’re struggling to get back to speed! M
I hope your (Jo’s) crises are all settled and well. Great to see you back. Cheers.
Nice to see you posting, you have a great channel .
Thanks! Yeah sorry for the delay... circumstances beyond our control, but we’re trying to get back to regularly posting again! M
yay your back! hope everything is OK and that you had a great Christmas and New Year. Looking forward to the next few vlogs
Thanks! Some major life events cropped up and have had to take use away from the channel for a bit. They’ve started to stabilize, and hopefully won’t delay future videos too much! M
Loved it! Quite possibly tell best outro you've ever done. ;-)
Thanks! M
Can't believe how strong the river Irwell was... Great vlog Happy New YEar!
We couldn’t believe it either! M
Hi, nice to see you back on YT. Liked the vlog (as always) and having visited Salford Quays several times and done the boat trip from there to Liverpool, have really enjoyed this one.😃
Glad you liked it! Sorry for the delay... unavoidable family concerns cropped up. M
Well explained vlog.....glad to see you posting vlogs again......thanks for sharing
Thanks! Yeah we had an unavoidable delay due to a medical issue in the family... hopefully it won’t cause any more long pauses. Glad to be back! M
Hi Jo and Michael, Recently I wondered how long it would take to look at all your videos. So after four false starts, in all instances I started at video 1 when you venture out in the car and take possession of your Narrow boat Perseverance, The four false starts ended at video 198, 175, 188 & 201 respectively. I had inadvertently terminated the continuation after shutting down another google operated program. Finally I started at video 1, at 00:30 on the 15.1.2020 (here in Aus) and made sure I did not terminate the program, it ran solid until lunchtime today 18.1.2020 when the last one 247 ran. I cannot with any certainty say your videos went that long, as your early videos had only one advertisement play, while the newer ones had two to each video, all the adverts played through in their entirety as no one was there to skip them. Probably a weird thing to do ,but I thought I would let you both know the outcome. You two are doing a fantastic job video 248 was interesting, it was lucky the front of the boat didn't get caught when Michael was making the turn to return to the lock. Happy cruising for 2020. A fan from Aus.
Wow, never thought about how much time playing them back to back would take, that’s pretty cool to have a timing on! Sorry we can’t do anything about the advertising... we’ve tried to limit them to the least disruptive settings, but google just started adding head and tail ads and sometimes multiple ones. And yeah we’re SO glad the nose didn’t catch, as we’d have ended up under water! M
well done happy new year to you all
Thanks! Happy New Year! M
So happy you are back to doing your vids. I was going through withdrawals. Love your channel!
Thanks! Sorry for the delay! Unavoidable life events with family have sort of messed up our usually schedule! M
Minimal List Hope all is well with your family now. Family always needs to come first.
Very interesting video and a bit 'hairy' too. I can see you two explorers heading up the coast to Blackpool, next - or maybe not!
Heh... we’ll put that on the “not likely, but Michael can dream” pile! M
Lol George was probably having a poo cos I called him Dylan - well executed turn there glad you all safe and well sending regards 👏❤️😁xx
Thank you! M
@@MinimalList That would have been pretty hairy that turn! Glad you made it safely!
That stretch on the Irwell looked a little hairy, glad to see you safely back on the Bridgewater. Looking forward to seeing where you head next.
Thanks! And yeah, a wee bit hairier than we expected! M
Love the early morning cruising, I always feel special watching the world wake up around me. Couldn't talk you into making it a regular feature could I. 😁
Glad you're back, safe travels.
I worked overnight once every month a long time ago. Would go out on the balcony every hour or so and have a fag (gave them up never fear) watching the city centre as night drew in and passed and then the morning. Fantastic experience!
It is really nice to see the world waking up... we don’t do it too often because we’re not usually in such a well lit big bloody basin with nothing to run aground on, so it’s not likely to become a regular feature just due to logistics and safety, but we’ll see! M
Loving your adventures, I'm taking lots of ideas from you as I'm hoping to travel to Liverpool Manchester and Lancaster in the summer.
David.
We totally recommend it!
Is there an IWA award for having travelled every centimetre of the English and Welsh canal system, cos if there is then you three are on track for it. That turn, is that the narrowboat equivalent of the 'handbrake turn', it looked hairy to say the least. Lovely to have the vlogs back and hope the year improves for you both, look after yourselves.
Glad to be back! Really didn’t want a delay, but some life events intervened. Glad you liked the handbrake drift... not my favorite moment, but any landing you can walk away from! M
Welcome back! You managed that turn beautifully! I remember back in about 1980 coming in the opposite direction on a hire boat. I think we came along either the Rochdale or the Ashton (don't remember which) and the locks were in a terrible condition. Then down to Pomona Lock, a bit of the Ship Canal and onto the Bridgewater. Pomona was very scary when we'd only been used to "normal" canal locks.
Ahh, I wonder where you went back on the Bridgewater? M
@@MinimalList We were coming from the other side of Manchester (I can't for the life of me remember exactly from where) and turning onto the Bridgewater to go to Sale. Have pity on my memory - it is almost 40 years ago!! 🤣
I too found turning on rivers can be tricky,we had a very scary moment on the Trent last year the only time I have ever run the engine at full throttle!!. But once over you feel great..
Yep... once you’ve survived, it does feel good to have barely done so! M
great vlog guys ,,, Michael scared never he just pretended hes a pro take care
Heh... a pro who knows when to say “well, that was bloody dangerous” after the fact! M
Brilliant. I call that; "Dedicated narrowboatism."
I call it unnecessary narrowboatism! 🤣 Jo
Did the trip up Irwell some years ago on NB President. Steam powered 70 ft no bow thruster just crew on the fore end with long shaft. But the flow was less it was in August. I think we needed a nudge from another boat
Glad to know we’re following in the President’s footsteps! M
Yes, I can see that that was a dangerous moment, arriving at a very short notice. Quick adequate reaction, Micheal is now an old hand at this. But still... scary. Glad you safely made it out of there with your boat.
Any landing you don’t have to swim away from! M
Very interesting video. Personally I didn't like the music but well worth watching and I'll save this one for future reference. Hope you guys are ok
thank for showing my city im just sorrry that i cud show you a lot moor if i knew that as i live 10min wark from cornbrook tram stop i hope you had a great time
We did have a great time! We both quite liked Manchester, and are looking forward to coming back through! M
Don't you just love it when you are going sideways down a river, same thing happened to us in Reading, scary sh#%.
Heh... yeah, it’s “Fun” for an instant or two, but it can get old quick! M
Nice to see parts of the city I was born in. And of course the rain ! Manchester must be the cleanest city in the country with the rain.
What I find abhorrent is the criminal damage graffiti on the canal towpath every when you look.
Kevin's recent vlog through the centre Leicester made me feel sick.
The railway approaches into city centres the same.
I hope your looking forward to the spring.
Great enjoyable vlog as per usual.
Keep safe and dry.
Happy 2020 cruising.
I actually quite like graffiti, when it’s well done, and the larger murals are very often done with the permission of the landowner, since they can take several days of hard work. I tend to dislike simple tagging, but there’s quite a few pieces on the approaches to both Manchester and Birmingham that are by relatively well known artists. It’s not an art form for everyone though, I’ll admit. M
LIFE JACKETS!! Good bit o 'chuff though well done
We definitely should have had them on! We’ll know for next time! At least we had satisfactory chuff for you! M
That was my first thought!
Fab vlog - we did this at the end of last year after doing the Rochdale x
Nice! Hopefully with less rain! M
We didn’t do the scary bit on the river though 😂 we just cruised on by Ponoma lock x
(maur's husband) you weren't kidding that scared me, wicked pissah
Sorry for the fright! M
Bostonian, eh? :) (me too, though not born-n-bred.)
Wow! I really should try to develop a better response to your videos than just; "Wow", but words fail. First of all it's good to have you back, even though the time warp is still fizzing away with us in mid January 2020, while you are stuck back in October 2019. Still, good to have at least some Minimal List.
Your turn in the current. I don't know how many of your viewers understood just how toe curling that was to watch? To those who do not aspire to driving boats, it was another of those seemingly banal, straight forward 'things you do', but when you don't tell Jo' until after you've done it, we who do know why.
I was taught Displacement Boat handling (RYA) in a dock in Docklands, so strong currents were nowhere to be found. On later trips though, I took my favourite boat (30ft Ex Admiralty Whaler) out through the only lock in Docklands, onto the Thames, to tow sailing boats (with Scouts in.) I had to make exactly that sort of turn, but I had masses more room, the nearest bridge was Tower Bridge and I was near Greenwich in a boat with genuine sea keeping qualities. As always sir; respec', very great respec'.
My instructor said; slow until almost stopped in the right place, then simultaneously (if you can,) put the wheel or the tiller over smartly while quickly, but steadily increasing the revs (until it cavitates like my favourite boat,) then grit your teeth and watch helplessly as the harbour wall, dockside, moored lighter or whatever, whizzes by horizontally. Looks like it still works? Welcome back. You were missed, but it's alright now.
Yeah. I figured those who are in the know will recognize just how bloody dangerous that was... I got it around because I was confident on the room and know I can push the engine hard, but man that could have gone the other way. Not going to repeat that one soon! But not a word to Jo! Sorry for the delay, BTW, bit of a family emergency that needed to be dealt with and required our full attention for a while. Hopefully the timewarp closes a bit in coming months! M
Have a look at Martin Zero site he is River Irwell and Area Expert he even climbs thru culvert and drains canals
We’ve heard of him and will take a look, thanks! M
Hi you two. Two nervous people going to negotiate the turning into the Grand union canal from the Thames tomorrow. 😳😳 have you ever done it this time of year with high waters. Bob and Lesley on Demelza
Afraid we haven’t ever made that turn, we only passed on the way up from Limehouse. That said from what we saw you should have no problems, it’s not the fastest flowing section or the most exposed to wind. Enjoy the adventure! M
Was that as close as it looked...! What would have done differently if you had the opportunity again.?
Heh, well I’d have not gone up after a rain upstream, for one. And I’d have carried forward maybe another hundred yards or so and looked for a wider point with nu tree right where the bow could strike it! M
You’re a salty mariner now. Fine boat handling .
Thanks! M
Jo: would you ever consider working up a version of the map with the non-navigable canals on it? Perhaps at a 50% saturation, and thinner line weight or something similar?
I, for one, would love it...
She says she’s considered it, but just finding correct information for all the navigable ones was daunting enough, and there are literally hundreds of disused canals in various states of repair, which would make fitting it all on one poster shockingly hard... so it’s a maybe, but there’s a few other projects in the works that will come first, I’m afraid. M
Minimal List Can I also put in a request for consideration? I got the map as a birthday present and love it- but I'd love an even larger version, A2 would be great... I know these pose problems for shipping which I believe Kath and Anna handle (would need a tube) but if a way could be found to manage it I'm sure you would shift a good number! Heck, I'd offer my land based services if you wanted!
Very interesting! My brother's just moved back on the Quays, I had no idea these canals were still so navigable.....Very interesting to hear a non-Manc accent doing the commentary...Are you Canadian? The two countries are worlds apart, aren't they?
Michael is half America and half Canadian! Thanks for watching.
@@MinimalList fascinating! So you have the choice of going to three very diverse and different countries.....would love to go to Canada someday...seen enough of the States now, thank you.
When on the shipping waterways, do Narrowboats need the traditional Red-Green-White lights like big boats?
Well yes, sort of ... we must have them if there’s fog or in low light, but then we’re also not supposed to be on there at all if there’s fog or in low light! M
