Yes! To continue with this analogy... there would be only few newsstands available because they get the majority of the papers/articles and people don't want to walk to other newsstands because there's only few newspapers there.
Chamath, Jason, and well all of you guys. I so enjoy your podcast. I look forward to it every couple of months or so... Chamath, I think you are one of the most intelligent men I have ever known (virtually, that is... ). Some of the other Podcasts you have been on where you said. Money does not make you happy... That is so true. I have personally done well for myself. Not fantastically wealthy like you but I can retire comfortably at 50 and do what I want. But having a lot of money does NOT make me happy. I do Volenteer work, teach some classes for local high schools and colleges on cybersecurity for free. just to try to give back, that is quite rewarding.
The problem I see is that those that make the laws don't understand the technology, therefore, they cannot create adequate laws to govern said technology.
@@Recreman There is no such thing as free speech in a private business. Many people, including our representatives, seem to miss the fact that even though these forums are public, they are, in fact, owned and operated by private businesses.
How about requiring the “distributors/publishers” to give us (users) a complete list of the features they us to categorize us and then let us modify it ?
Social networks amplify and suppress content, they act as editors. If they want to be a platform, users must have complete control over how content is curated for them.
The Black Swan danger of Covid wasn't just it's communicability and severity. It was those things AND the possibility of saturated care facilities. It wasn't that it's so deadly, it was that it was *deadly *enough that you would need help and not be able to get it.
And regarding SCOTUS, term limits is a terrible idea. If judges are going to be out looking for a new job in a few years how do think that will effect their decision making?
Censorship violates the unspoken laws the internet was built upon. If SM platforms censor news to fit an agenda people will simply leave. Instead of arguing the point let the user decide how they want to see their content and if they want certain content censored.
*#NOADS*, ever? The social marginal benefit of allowing ads, at least one, would far outweigh the social marginal cost/ incentive/ benevolent gesture. That's NOT true for every podcast or every channel, but with the *#ALLINPODCAST*, on RUclips, it is true. 1)... You guys have some of the most important discussions out of any podcast, and when you share an opinion, it is almost always tied to experience, data, case, etc. (not just morals, feelings, hunches, or biases tied to trauma or hatred). People need more exposure to the caliber of content and discussions that YOU provide and allow us to listen to- NOT the majority - crap that is produced and sprinkled around like it's gold dust. And you are a great example of people who are individuals, different backgrounds, different thoughts to offer and bring to the table, yet, you don't hate eachother and resort to vitriol when someone has a different opinion or experience. Your Communication style is what people need more exposure to. It's healthy. 1.5) if a main goal is that people 'magically' find you (or with little to no help of the algorithm) simply out of pure interest: no ads is fantastic for multiple reasons. And your 'growth' (silly compared to the true measure of growth you all have had and seen) will reflect true fans with like interests rather than artificial measures of discovery. 1.75) However, if your goal is to *IMPACT* as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, getting your discussions and ideas and viewpoints into as many minds as possible, ads will contribute to that happening much much sooner. I'm sure you know how that works. It's a benevolent gesture, but, more people need to hear your discussions, the sooner, the better. Donating, or creating your own uncensored platform with the ad revenue, would be an Additional impact.
Chamath himself is pioneer of the content curation algorithms at FB. He kept his mouth shut regarding that, perhaps one way to avoid scrutinizing questions from fellow besties
If the algorithm/"machine" already exists, and people pump their content into it, sites aren't responsible... If they actively CHANGE the algorithm to boost certain content, they are... There should be transparency about how "the machine" works as well...
I’m glad you all are keeping it real. You are not tds billionaires you actually real democrats. Or you would have just ignored it or done a tyt or msm approach Like each podcast all in one utube video better every time
great video appreciate all of your time! your analysis are very in depth, would love to hear the topic of what you think the top 3 most powerful companies (not market capitalization the power to exploit the most useful information for good/bad) over next 5-10 years!
It’s not just about the money. It’s manipulation. Try googling “happy white women” and check out the images. Then google “happy black women” and compare what you see. Then, once you see the cynical level of manipulation google uses, set up Duck Duck Go as your search engine.
We need to stop treating these social networks as a good old past time. We are years past that old idea. We need regulations and accountability over all the horrible and fake news it spreads. For us now to not even know what is true, and we need to default that every single thing is false online. Most of us already lived like this, but to remind everyone around us is tiring. Very sad where we are now in society.
Would it not be easier to establish protocols around blockchain & the digital self, to put the control and responsibility of personal data & content in the hand of the user? Why do we promote business models & algorithms that are permitted to exploit and target users, as well as leverage user content, due to ambiguous access to personal data.
I might be off on this but.. 230 is exactly what gave these platforms the ability to avoid editorial decision-making like this in the past. ...then Russia came along and leveraged this non-filtering and exploited the algorithms. Now these platforms have to choose between pissing off certain interests who accuse them of selective censorship, and being responsible for the fall of American democracy. I don’t think they’re taking this choice lightly... Despite anger on all sides about content in the past, 230 allowed them to say they were agnostic. By repealing 230 they will be exposed to lawsuits from everyone, and that will *force them* to say ‘this is our business and our platform and we have a right to decide what we want’.. and then they’ll make editorial decisions. They will make editorial moves that serve a certain profile and, like Chamath has said before, over time they will become like the networks (aligned with specific political and social segments).
We need to go back to old-school journalism where the journalists reputations are everything. Journalism that's paid and not by advertising dollars. This will prevent the click-bait news stories from questionable sources that are diluting and harming society in general.
Perhaps you couldn't find it on CNN or Dreugg Report because it wasn't journalistic worth reporting. Also if you don't like what Facebook or Twitter posting or blocking then you can choose to not use their service.
How is it possible for a sentient being walking the face of the earth today to have "trust issues" with Jack Dorsey? He's like a male version of Betty White and Sandra Bullock rolled into one, lol... what could be better?
Props to Friedbergs dog for being an absolute chiller in the corner the whole time
all time good boy
The analogy is this: a newsstand is removing pages from the paper 📄
And reshuffling the pages based on whoever walks by....
Yes! To continue with this analogy... there would be only few newsstands available because they get the majority of the papers/articles and people don't want to walk to other newsstands because there's only few newspapers there.
Chamath is awesome. All points are on point. Completely agree with with him. People need to know if there's a distinct bias in a massive platform

Great to see guys have really robust arguments but still remain friends, great content as usual.
The problem I see is that those that make the laws don't understand the technology, therefore, they cannot create adequate laws to govern said technology.
Have we thrown free speech out the window?
@@Recreman There is no such thing as free speech in a private business. Many people, including our representatives, seem to miss the fact that even though these forums are public, they are, in fact, owned and operated by private businesses.
There is an interference and manual editing in this case. Not algorithms.
How about requiring the “distributors/publishers” to give us (users) a complete list of the features they us to categorize us and then let us modify it ?
Leaked info is not the same as hacked info.
Social networks amplify and suppress content, they act as editors.

Chamath, go on the HyperChange podcast!
Gali interviewing Chamath would be epic!!
Love the podcast, as usual, but please let Sacks talk. Thanks!

Wickedly bright group of individuals; great podcast. Sacks is a nice balance to the others...more Friedberg next time!
They’re back! WOooooo
Love the podcast guys. Always packed with great opinions and humor 👍
Can they do a live stream where they actually play poker
Dam.. even Sacks doubted the Hunter laptop story when it came out. If only they knew..
And regarding SCOTUS, term limits is a terrible idea. If judges are going to be out looking for a new job in a few years how do think that will effect their decision making?
They should have one 18 year term and then they retire afterwards

We are the government and this time we will get it right
"Really went out on a limb, David." ... lol😂
America can thank Jack and Mark for bringing this divided house back together

You guys are awesome!
democratizing Ai is important... and social platforms cannot censor...
Wish this was a weekly series
Love the podcast, other than Jason's smug and condescending political blathering about Trump.
"Active distribution" = "responsibility"...
If the algorithm/"machine" already exists, and people pump their content into it, sites aren't responsible... If they actively CHANGE the algorithm to boost certain content, they are... There should be transparency about how "the machine" works as well...
The solution is a decentralized social media app. No way to censor.
fantastic four! thanks 🙏

Doesn't pention reform hurts the middle class? If not, why?
I was about to go to bed but looks like I'll be up another hour.😅
So funny and at the same time knowledgable

what am i supposed to be "seeing" ?
I googled both - I didn’t find any difference
What did you see when you googled?
Thanks for doing this podcast.

18 year term. That's Andrew Yang
"...We are really winding down on the whole Covid thing..." - Sacks
Um what? Europe is seeing more cases than ever
Not sure what you mean. It's winding down inside Sacksi-Poo's Mexican villa with a built-in air-gapped bunker.
Passions are rising as we get closer to election time! Im a Brit but watch US elections and buy US stocks!
The reality show isn't going to end if he loses.
@24:43 "All of that is good." Um, all of the things he listed are the problem.
yo yo yo, another great episode!
Best podcast

There is way to much money in the internet for that to happen.
@@TheTyme99 I totally agree, but I the advertised back journalism trend was a mistake and we need to correct and go back.
Time to short TWTR.
59:09 SHOUT OUT ANDREW YANG
Hey, what a nice surprise. My favorite poker buddies . . .
Just realized I am only watching this because RUclips is trying to make money off of me.

13:30 I think chamath misspoke and switched publisher with distributor by mistake
Total (algorithmic) bias by ALL of the big tech giant “platforms.” That point is 💯 clear.
First. Love this podcast. Wish I was a bestie
You can be my bestie!
Botcharama!
Love you guys mmmmmmm
I got shadow banned from Twitter today for saying I wanted to sucker punch a drone that was delivering fried chicken.
I can't fathom why 4 great entrepreneurs want to waste time discussing censorship in a public forum...
there aren't analogies AROUND things. there are analogies ABOUT things. Stop that weak non-causal, talk in circles expression!
Yk
Huge fan of your pod cast and your personal stories. One constructive suggestion - get a female voice on the pod. Less of a boys club...
Chamath wants the election to be over after Biden corruption news appear😅
