The idea to build a shipping container home was definitely one of the wildest ones we've had and if you've been joining our weekly videos for any amount of time you know that's saying something. Without question, it's a project that is much more difficult than we thought it would be but we're having fun along the way and that's what counts. How did we end up here?
It all began with a year of full-time travel, embracing the van life until the world shifted, and we had to adjust accordingly. With travel no longer an option but determined to stay productive, we transformed our compact mobile abode into a self-sufficient off-grid dwelling that fulfilled all our needs. Recognizing the uncertainty of the current tiny home, we concluded that establishing a permanent residence was the most sensible choice. Over the past three years, we have meticulously overseen every aspect of the project ourselves, planning the construction while simultaneously setting up the off-grid property to sustain our future food requirements. This pursuit led us to seek a temporary residence, and after an extensive search, we stumbled upon Geodesic Domes, realizing they perfectly suited our needs while we dedicated ourselves to the gradual realization of our shipping container home dream. However, this will mark our 4th winter with stable electricity, running water, or a flushing toilet and time has come to come up with a new plan going forward.

BEFORE YOU FINISH BUILDING GIVE THIS SOME THOUGHT: Go ahead and decide where you will put in a lift for the dogs AND for you when you get older. My parents did this when a lift was not needed and it turned about to be a great idea. All they did was align a little oversized closet space down in the garage that went up all three floors. It was operated by a simple motorized cable wench at the top of the third level ceiling. That way they not only had the closet/elevator shaft aligned, but also had the electric outlet and motor installed. IT HELPED THEIR DOG WHEN HE GOT OLDER WITH ARTRITIS AND EVENTUALLY THEM TOO. All They Had To Do Was Lift Out The Carpeted Floor Panels They Had ALREADY CUT OUT to Cover The 60"x 60" Holes On Each Floor. The idea has worked well and safely for the last 17 years.

Yeah, didn't really understand what the problem was but I guess it was homophobism. Kinda ridiculous nowadays. I didn't think that prejudice and hatred toward Gays was so bad in Canada. It's bad enough here in Southeastern USA where a lot of people love to hate Gays. I guess one way around that is to make sure any contractor and their employees are Gay friendly. You could tell just by asking and observing their reaction. Why would it bother them SO much anyway? Maybe overcompensating.

Love your videos - and a note about compost. DOn't go to all the trouble to move the compost from bin to bin. You just rotate which bin is the "current scraps" bin. When bin 1 gets full it becomes the bin you aerate and turn over, and you put new scraps in bin 2. When it is full, you put new stuff in bin 3, bin 2 becomes aerate and turn over, and bin 1 becomes new soil. By the time bin 3 is full, you will have used the good fertilizer in bin 1 and you can start filling it with new scraps again.
Thank you for giving Squirrel more camera time. I was wondering why the dogs got all of the attention. She is beautiful and well behaved. I own nine cats because I save ferals and at one time housed 18 and loved them all. Enjoy your time with her.

Honestly, I've been surprised at how many blue collar straight workers you've had on the house. I'm not surprised that some animosities arose. I hope it all works out for you. You both are so blessed to have found each other. To have a partner with the same life goals that you get along with is a miracle.

You know how sometimes something hits your funny bone even though it's not technically funny? When those 2 inner walls tipped over in the compost bin and Tyler goes "Makes sense", I just about busted a gut. Don't know why it was so funny to me, but it was. And - it does look amazing.

It's hard when things go wrong during construction. I was SO lucky with my house that the man who built it was SMART, coopeartive, and so easy to get along with. It went like a dream. And to think I got his name as a reccommendation from a cashier at the grocery store!
I love that you share your lives with us and despite the ugly difficulties you are experiencing currently, you both display the courage to withstand the ignorance and poor manners of others. Squirrel is enjoying the last warmth of summer. Progress is progress no matter how fast or slow life proceeds. Just take things in stride and focus on your long term goals.
Are you going to make a root cellar? That would be the perfect place to store your potatoes, carrots, squash and onions after harvesting. Warm enough to keep them from freezing but cool enough to prevent spoilage.

This composting will be awesome. Just a side note: when the time comes to close down your garden make sure that you keep any kind of mold, disease or questionable plants separated from your compost. You don’t want to cross contaminate with your future gardens and spread it to another patch. Love you both and don’t try not to stress to much you will make it through this rough patch. Much love. ❤
What about tomato seeds? I have heard that tomato seeds can survive through the composting process and then will be the cause of tomato plants coming up anywhere you use composted soil in your garden. That means that there will be plants competing for nutrients and sun and water in all sorts of places you don't want them. Of course, if this is one of those untruths, sorry for bothering you with it. I am just a city person without any real gardening experience; but I read constantly and (sometimes unfortunately) remember all sorts of odd bits. The only tomato plants I have ever tried to grow didn't make it as they were eaten by the squirrels (real ones, not like your pretty little girl). At least, that is what I think ate them, but I certainly don't know for sure. I think I should stop talking now...
@@vickied6087 if seeds are in the compost most likely you will have what they call volunteers. If the seeds don’t sprout 🌱 it could be caused by either old seeds that have died off or birds come and eat them. No worries I completely understand.😋

I’m sitting in the hospital having gone into CHF post knee replacement. On top of that I tested Covid positive. I am having a cardiac cath tomorrow to determine if I need stents or open heart. I am scared, nervous and frustrated. Then I remembered that today is Sunday and I can watch your vlog, which always makes me happy. Than you for bringing us all along on your journey.

One of the things I love about you guys is when you decide to do something, you go for it! You don’t cut corners and it always seems to work out and look great! Elevator is a great idea especially for your boys and then you later in life. Also will be good if you have disabled family or friends visiting. Best wishes. Will keep you in prayer for good outcomes of your problems.
I am sure you guys are already aware, but you can order earth worms for composting to help start your bins off right! They aren't even expensive. Since you are composting on the ground though and not in one of the spinny bins that are self-contained, make sure if you do order that you order ones that are native and won't take over or cause damage. Obviously, you can add them to your garden too and that will help you guys with your no till garden next year!!!
Just curious...couldn't you just go to a bait shop and buy dew worms and put them into your compost? They would be native. Or are the worms different? I know there are the worms for the vermicompost but they are different.
@@the_mumThe way I understand it, the compost worms you buy are bred to handle the higher temperatures in the compost. However, the worms you find in the garden should be all right too, and they are definitely native. It's worth trying.

I love it when there are serendipitous moments like this when living off of the land and building you're home. You had no idea what you were going to use those boulders for, low and behold that stunning retaining wall is exactly why you saved them. It's a delight watching moments like this and the "mini" projects get off the ground! Keep up the great work, sending lots of positive vibes and love from the UK (and thanks for the homework into researching three-bin compost theory 😂). x
It's always kind of reassuring to hear about problems other people have with trades -- as a lone middle-aged woman who wants things done well and timely, considering what I''m paying, I run into this endlessly. It's also why I'm building a workshop in my garage and do a lot of DIY. I used to think it had to do with the size of the jobs I needed done, but it isn't -- it's just about attitudes.
Part of the problem you guys are running into is that you want very high-end build and finish in a part of the world where that's not normal, and the trades basically don't want to deal with you. Even if they can get over their homophobia, and they mostly won't, you're scaring them with your expectations and they're just digging in and stalling. However, you have an audience across North America, and there are people who know how to do things everywhere. I would suggest you put a call out for queer trades and tradeswomen, let them travel, let them arrange ordering and delivery, put them up and showcase them in exchange for some of the work. You'll be done faster with better results, I think.

My friends live in Homer Alaska and they said it’s been TERRIBLE weather this year. They got 1 week of sunshine so they could Buck their hay and get it into the barn before it started raining again. It sounds HORRIBLE! Their garden was crap this year too. Only the cold vege’s actually worked out…..

My father was a carpenter contractor he has built many homes in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and California he always said never build a structure with a heavy heart or a conflicting mind because it will become embedded in the structure and affect the atmosphere of the home for as long as it stands.
My family and I travelled your direction from Ontario last week and boy oh boy the east coast is beautiful. When you guys mentioned living on a hill it reminded me that most of Nova Scotia lives on a hill. Nothing is flat that’s for sure. I love your videos. You make me laugh!!

You guys may be well aware of this already, but used coffee grounds are gold for your compost! It’s classed as green material and is usually available for free in coffee shops if you ask (or it is here in the UK at least). Looking forward to seeing how you get on with it!
