    How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.

Thanks again for understanding where we’ve been the last couple of weeks…it’s really hard to condense all our feelings and emotions into a 20 something minute video each week, especially the weeks where we’re feeling overwhelmed and are struggling. If it’s all the same to you guys, maybe some weeks when we’re feeling that way we can switch up the video content and go for an adventure somewhere, maybe hit the road in the RV for a little while or even just make some fries and have red wine together LOL... anyway, I hope you don't mind if we start switching things up every now and then, we miss you too much when we don't post these Sunday videos ❤

After starting with the new challenges you are then tearing up flooring, digging up potatoes and making fries. As always thanks for taking us along (of course you make the rest of us look like slackers but you are forgiven) !

Ground cherries are also called Cape Gooseberries (not the same as the usual green gooseberries) and are a member of the nightshade family so they are related to tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant. They are also closely related tomatillos which also come in those little lantern shaped paper coverings. Just a little FYI in case you didn't already know. Cape Gooseberries are seedy so they are easy to just turn a few under and have them volunteer back in future seasons. With all you guys have been through lately, I am surprised to see that you still have wine left. It is good to have you back, I have missed your adventures. Sometimes hard decisions have to be made and you have to take matters into your own hands that you had hoped (and paid) to have others handle for you. It is all part of taking on such a huge project and you will both be stronger and even more elated when everything is completed. Keep on focusing on the prize, guys. See you next week.

Hi you all. An other name for ground cherrys ist; Physalis. The fruits of the Cape gooseberry wrapped in the lanterns are edible. They grow as large as a cocktail tomato, taste sweet and sour and have a very high vitamin C content. For this reason, they used to be eaten mainly by seafarers - to protect against scurvy. Today, physalis fruits are used in fruit salads or chutneys and are used to decorate desserts. The fruits can also be eaten dried. Enjoy and lots of hugs. Karin

Glad you were able to harvest some potatoes. It is so discouraging to have a crop destroyed by pests or disease. It really makes you appreciate farmers! This year our lemon crop was devastated by black birds who pecked away and ate the peel! A flock of them ruined about 50 lemons in one day!🤬We didn’t know birds would eat lemons! We built a cage around the tree and they managed to get inside a couple of times. Finally we bought cloth bags to put around the lemons so we did get about 15. Next year we’ll be ready!

I like this episode today, your ground cherries are called cape gooseberries here in new Zealand and are ready when the case is clear and u can see the orange/ yellow fruit, you can make a preserve out of them and also dip in chocolate and let harden, apparently its a nice sweet and sour taste (an aquired taste) here they self-seed and can grow like weeds

Personally I’ve never considered the taste of cape gooseberries to be particularly an “acquired taste”. Theyre sweet and tangy like most berries, you just need to make sure you let the fruit ripen fully ie: wait till the husk has turned transparent before picking. We used to make a cape gooseberry crumble, which was yummy.

They came back to check on the only issue with a gutter & we just ripped it off & called it good for now. It's always something but best to catch them before a major issue like leaks happens. People think of leaks & buckets but not so much damage to wiring & hidden structures. It will be fixed & you can relax a bit. Things always work out. Maybe take a little road trip break!

Oh guys what a headache having to rip the floor up and remove the siding on the outside 😩, love that gadget, there’s nothing better than homemade fries made from your own potatoes you grew yourselves, tfs x Julie 🇬🇧

Ugh, sounds like you guys went through a lot of stress.
I hope you're resolving the issue with the siding installers so that you don't have to pay for the replacement material because that was NOT your fault, either.
Let's hope the issue with the tower is quickly resolved, too. We don't want the stairs shifting away from the house.
Ventilation is good. These guys sound like they know what they're doing so, yay. It's ironic that you made the house so air-tight that you have to install ventilation so you can have fresh air inside.
Oh, no, the great potato famine of 2023!
I just tried a thing with some baby potatoes: wash well, put in a shallow baking pan whole, add sea salt & olive oil and bake. 5 minutes before they're done add shredded cheddar cheese and let it melt. Then garnish with sour cream (and chives if you like them). SOOO good.

My parents friends have one of those at the cabin. They mounted it to a wall in the shed and put a bucket underneath it to catch the fries as they fall. Hope you are doing ok through Tropical Storm Lee :)

If you have gone to the expense of that chipper, you have to get a deep fat fryer. They will taste much better and cook quicker😊 love you two ❤

The weeds & esp the clover make good mulch/compost to leave all winter then chop up & turn under in the spring. Helps fortify the soil. Your garden doesn't have to be naked & tidy in the off season...🙂🥔🍅🫑 If the potatoes are far enough along, they won't spoil w/o the tops. Glad to see you're still getting some potatoes!

What you in Canada call ground cherries, we in South Africa call Gooseberries. My grandmother had a gooseberry bush or tree in her garden and we used to pluck off those delightful berries.

    Hi Guys,
I'm SO, SO sorry that you've encountered all of this difficulty! It sounds to me like MASSIVE amounts of malpractice on the part of multiple contractors! You should not have to pay for all of the enormous amount of un-do & re-do! It's just wrong! Will you be able to make those who caused the problems PAY TO CORRECT all of this?? With Great Empathy, LTB, age 78

Guys, I can't believe how badly some of those contractors screwed you over. It really makes me angry for you. I hope there will be some sort of renumeration happening, because of that shoddy work. I hope sunny days are in your future and that Lee is done harassing you!

STOP Todd in his loud voice had me laughing. I know you guys didn't expect to have some re-do work on your house performed by your previously contractors. Keep focused the end product which is your brand new home. Fall is here and winter around the corner do you expect your new home to be completed? Have a great week you two!
