    I wish Netflix would stop its obsession with American high school. Not every second original needs to be about adult teenagers and muh secrets.

      That's British high school, and those tend to be more original. American high school shows just have to play into every stereotype with cheerleaders, jocks and loner nerd types. Even something like Death Note was remade to fit the tropes.

      Teenagers are dedicated consumers and I assume they’re a big part of Netflix’s audience, so it’s not surprising that this is the content Netflix keeps on producing.

      Loffeleif high school dramas are like the nu metal of film. They try to appeal to teens and try to be edgy but can't help but continuously fail again and again. For every one good one there's 30 more meh and bad ones. There's definitely fantastic pieces of work out there like the amazing Euphoria and I have a lot of nostalgia for pretty little liars as well. It's crazy how many of these kinds of shows there are but its not surprising either. Ppl love that shit. It's a good genre to get people talking about the show and it helps out news outlets by giving them another show to pump out top 5s galore about. STONKS

      And all it does is project the narrative that gays are actually oppressed by THEMSELVES to negate the damage done by the oppressors. It's the same energy as "what about black on black crime". Not to mention treating oppression as an individual's actions and not as a part of an institutional trend

      I wrote an informal essay to a friend of mine about the portrayal of lgbt characters in 13 Reasons Why and what it boils down to is It's Bad, for literally every character, in wildly different ways. Like, Tony is the most sympathetic and developed gay character and as is mentioned in the video, he lives the life of a goddamn adult which in my opinion is reflective of the discomfort of straight writers to write gay teenagers, so they need to show them as like, "two consenting adults behind closed doors" rather than the teenagers that they are. As a side note, actors playing gay characters in this show seem to be generally older than those playing straight characters, which is... interesting.
      Courtney is like.. also Really Bad Representation because literally all of the bad stuff she did that landed her on the tapes was a panicked response to the threat of being outed, and then is outed on the tapes by Hannah which is never acknowledged as being nearly as much of a waking nightmare as it would be.
      Casey's treated so badly by the narrative and is undeniably implied to be a lesbian through the fact that she's constantly decked out in rainbow pins and flannel, and the main purpose of her character is be a cartoon example of a Bad Survivor while never actually making the assault she suffered real to the audience by defining what it is.
      Winston is just a wildly ridiculous character and there's some really damaging stuff in there (being bizarrely fetishistic of Latine people for one thing, and the fact that he continues to hook up with the dude who beat him up which is a trope im SICK TO DEATH of seeing gay characters go through when they have like.. no fucking reason to).
      And then there's just. the NIGHTMARE that is Monty's arc this season.

    • @allimuller1053
      @allimuller1053 4 года назад +181

      I actually enjoyed the show furthering his characterization, but revealing him as gay was problematic because it kind of shaded what he did to Tyler as maybe an extension of that, which inadvertently advances the misconception that rape is somehow about sex. As awful as what happened to Tyler was, one good thing about it was that it was portrayed as absolutely power-based. It was about Monty dominating and humiliating him. The reveal of Monty being gay and then him proudly telling his dad while in prison for raping Tyler really has some unfortunate implications.

I hate the way Cheryl's actress delivers lines, though she is given a lot of shit lines. The rest of the actors are ok. So I think the main difference is that either enough of the dialogue in 13 reasons why is better than riverdale, or that the actors in 13 reasons why deliver the bad lines in a way that feels more natural than riverdale. In either case, I believe the characters in 13 reasons why way more than Riverdale. But I’ve seen so many fans of the show feel bad for the Monty character. I don’t really care about blurring the lines and humanizing a villain because that’s life and I can think for myself and come to my own conclusions, but I think that idea is too complicated for modern day hive-minded teens. They should just stick to telling the viewers how horrible boys are like the other 95% of this show lol

    • @_gremlinboy
      @_gremlinboy 4 года назад +89

      It's not about saying boys are horrible, it's about accountability- boys are fine, rapists are horrible. The whole idea is that we need to tell boys that they don't have to be horrible, and remind everyone that we don't really need to forgive horrible people. I'm honestly on the edge of my damn seat waiting for a show to show a survivor, in a positive light, say that their abuser is unforgivable. This guy certainly was, and that's how his arc should have ended, really.

They had an entire episode in season 2 where one of the female leads talks about how boys have no idea what true stress is in high school compared to girls and yet the show featured a male character going through these horrible tragedies of a modern teenager that ultimately led to getting raped, and the reaction to it for the most part was “ew why is this even in this show?”

The only reasons she exists is to drop exposition bombs on the audience that the creators couldn’t be bothered to do in a creative way. On top of that, the only way that she even knows anything is because she spends 90% of her screen time just eavesdropping on people. The fact that the climax of the season was some pretentious British girl lecturing a policeman on how to investigate a murder is laughable.

      I couldn't agree with your comment more! While the concept of watching the events unfold through a newcomer's eyes sounds compelling on paper, the execution just doesn't work. Ani comes across as nosy and intrusive at best, and it doesn't help that EVERYONE immediately accepts her into their social circles, entrusting her with secrets, and she narrates events that she was in no way present for. It might have been more effective had Ani been around since the beginning, so that we'd have had time to get accustomed to her. Grace Saif also doesn't deserve to get bullied off of social media for simply doing her job!😩

      tbh it feels like the showrunners wanted to create that same feel you find in a lot of Japanese media, like the Persona games. Where it's a group of teens against the world, and often they're dismissed and disbelieved if they try to defend themselves, and you root for the teenagers because they're so much more aware and sensitive to the world around them, often acting more adult than adults. But the problem is that American society treats their teenagers completely different than in Japan, and so you have these teenagers behaving like adults, but with the adults around them desperate to help them. So, it just because laughable, as you said, because these kids have zero reason to be the way they are with regards to adults.

      I think it did care at the beginning. Season 1 for all of its flaws, is sincere. It’s intentions are genuine. But then you get to season 2, then you’ve got B movie style schlock. Utter crap. I mean I enjoyed it, but purely for the fact it was entertaining and easy to turn my brain off to. Which is the issue. This show wants to desperately be both Riverdale and a social commentary. It can’t really have both because one destroys the integrity of the other. If they go social commentary, they have to ground the story and tone down the sensationalist aspects of a Riverdale style show. If they go down the Riverdale style of things, you lose the impactfulness of what the message is. Season 1, despite having a lot going on, is relatively grounded in that everyone’s got their own minor story which impacts the lives of others. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that something like season 1 could actually happen in real life. But going further beyond that goes down the route of absurdity. Like yes, school shootings are common these days but it seems like it was shoehorned in. If you e got something like that going on, it’s got to be the main plot for the most part. But here, you’ve got the school shooter angle, the rapist ring, Clay’s manic episodes, Alex suffering with the consequences of attempted suicide, etc. Like, did Clay’s hallucinations need to happen? Did the rape ring need to happen? Or at least, could they at least have split this all up into different seasons? Maybe allude to the rape ring during season 2 then use that as a way to contrast that stuff with his “good” image? Maybe isolate the season 2 story to the making of a school shooter and how he came to be? Maybe just completely scrap the hallucination stuff? Maybe just have Clay have vivid dreams of Hannah where they talk and use that as a way of getting in Clay’s head as well? Idk, season’s 2 and 3 are just a mess. Season 1 at least was somewhat believable, and it seemed to have good intent. Since then though, it looks like Netflix are trying to milk it for all it’s worth

Sexual assault victims need to stick together it’s not every victim to themselves. A better excuse would’ve been that he wasn’t comfortable opening up about it until she did that whole speech. Just because it happened ages ago doesn’t mean he’s healed and is some wise guru on sexual assault trauma. I mean hell it happened again recently when he was on the street so he’d be having to recover and heal again. Going through trauma once doesn’t work like a vaccine. There’s this play called ‘How I learned to Drive’ about a woman who is consistently molested by her uncle. The entire play is about their relationship and how, despite the ways he’s sexualized her and hurt her over the years, she still loves him and doesn’t want to view him as a monster. The entire play really goes into her whole life, even depicting how her being mistreated by her uncle leads to her having enough of a negative view of herself that she proceeds to seduce a high schooler when she’s a professor. The play is really impactful and says a lot about the societal impact of sexualizing young women and how the cycle of abuse essentially affects each person involved in it. However, as much as the play allows you to understand and sympathize with both her and her uncle, they never try to paint her uncle as ‘the victim’, instead choosing to focus on how society treats victims and understanding why some victims don’t come forward. That entire play does this concept of understanding how awful people get molded into themselves much better than this show. And it genuinely disgusts me how little this show seems to give a shit about its audience or its impact simply because they want to be ‘deep’ or ‘dramatic’.

    The timeline in this season was so hard to follow. The present also didn't always add up with the flashbacks.
    For example: in the present, when Bryce's body was found, his mom didn't really seem to care. It was like she understood that he was murdered and she didn't really blame the murderer for doing it, cause she felt the same way about her son. But in the flashbacks, you see her relationship with Bryce healing and growing to the point where she really loves him again and can even laugh with him and comfort him. So why was she so cold about him being dead in the present? Just so the first episodes of S3 could 'neatly' match up with how she felt about her son in season 2? Kinda sloppy if you ask me (but no one's really asking me, so...)

    I will always hated how this show tries to paint being a victim as being "cool" or "edgy". I have started speaking out about my issues (sexual assualt, abuse, PTSD, depression, anxiety) as a way of both helping other victims and those who are trying to support their loved ones who are suffering. I'm by no means a profession; I just try to be an open, nonjudgmental friend. While talking to one girl who wanted to better understand what a victim went through, she expressed to me that she was "jealous" and thought I was "lucky" because she had such a romanticized idea of what it means to be a victim. Being a victim isn't cool. It's not trendy. It's traumatic and is the source of a lot of struggles and (at times) death. By romanticizing this, shows like 13RW teach people that being a victim/survivor isn't something that should genuinely be taken seriously. It undermines the work that so many have done to prove that mental health should be treated with care, as well as abuse and sexual assualt. It's repulsize. And then to cap it off with "but this serial rapist isn't SO bad!" is the definition of disrespectful and repulsive. I never had much respect for this show at all, but I could try to say that they at least thought they were doing good. Now, seeing them try to claim that Bryce just needs to be forgiven because he "isn't so bad", I can't think of a single way they can justify how blatantly vile it is. Not only does it set up the concept of "the victims are wrong if they can't forgive", but it's DANGEROUS! Statistically speaking, 60% of convicted and released rapists will be arrested for the same crime WITHIN 5 YEARS OF RELEASE. You can't pretend that this character is in any way worthy of a grand redemption arch.

She completely dissociated the same man that abused her in such a horrendous way for YEARS and painted him as idealized, good man version. I won't deny he did do good things in his life, but the majority of the shit he did was not praise worthy, at all. But this is not an uncommon occurrence. It happens all the damn fucking time. Even if it was executed it was pretty obvious that this was the direction they were trying to go with. They show that Bryce was trying to change/become a better person, only for him to die before this was able to happen. They then show that a similarly awful person was also on the path to change and that maybe we should be more accepting of him trying to do this... except he was killed too. It makes absolutely no sense and I have no idea what they were going with when they made this decision.

    12:24 I was actually very much hoping that Bryce would become the hallucination that sticks with Clay. IMO it would have been a good twist, going from hallucinating the person he loves, to the person he hates, this hugely antagonistic figure grinding him down constantly. Was disappointed they didn't do that.
