- Smelter is an interesting fusion of action platformer and strategy/resource management. Its story revolves around the destruction of the Garden of Eden and Eve's quest to find Adam but does it with a sci-fi twist which involves her teaming up with a creature, the titular Smelter. Is it worth getting? Well, let's find out....

Review written and video created by Glen Bolger Игры
An interesting mix of genres of here which works for the most part. Which two genres would you like to see fused together? Glen
I'd like more turn based grand strategy mixed with rpg elements, like I loved on Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars. It was a hidden gem blast for me!
Sounds like Actraiser to me.
I like the game’s look but I’ll pass due to the gameplay thanks to the tower defense aspect
“I felt as if the soldiers were not as proactive as they should have been...”
You mean like the UK Military? 😂 jk
Two genres I’d like to see combined: murder mystery with rpg elements. Think Disco Elysium
This is such a bizarre spin on the Adam and Eve story
I see ActRaiser is trying to sneak back into my life after all these years
Such a great game.
That was my first thought
Yes!
Check out Sol Seraph. It's apparently the "spiritual successor" to ActRaiser and it wasn't bad. Still can't wait for true ActRaiser port to the Switch.
@@Streaml1neJMoose it was marketed as a spiritual successor. But it wasn't. Most who played Actraiser and bought that agreed it wasn't good.
why does this make me nostalgic for Kill La Kill, lol? Either way that pixel art is gorgeous and it looks fun!
le bikini armor
I’d kill la kill old enough for it to class as nostalgic?
@@aikikaname6508 something doesn't necessarily need to be "older" for someone to feel nostalgic
Everyone is like 'Ohh, wow - so creative'!
Guys...it's Actraiser (1990) - but looks nicer and more modern.
U smelt it, u dealt it Glen! 😂
Haha, I should have used that! Glen
Whoever made this game, I can say it likes Kill La Kill.
Hmm I like kill la kill.. Maybe i should try it
Fuck yeah ! I was hoping you guys would cover this! I love the style of the game , so I am very interested in it!
Looking pretty good, i hope Limited Run Games picks this one up for a physical release.
You're in luck! Redartgames is publishing it!
i loved act raiser and this game looks like a nice throwback. but i think ill wait for it to go on sale. i know its not much but my back log is already big enough so added another to it.
Nice review, this might finally be the Actraiser fill in for the modern day. I think this is gonna be an easy purchase for me. Thanks for the content!
I’m not a a huge tower defense guy. But I’m a huge platformer fan and this is right up my alley. So I’ll probably wishlist and wait for a sale on this one
What a crazy fusing of gameplay mechanics. I’m really liking the creativity behind it all
Intriguing combination of genres for this one. Honestly, it does look like something that I could see myself playing. I think I will add it to the wish list and keep an eye on it.
Sounds like a plan mate. Glen
Can't wait to see your take on Devil Slayer and Bamerang!! Awesome content!!!👍👍
Tha ms for the review glen. It looks good and I might pick it up if it’s on sale down the road. Cheers
Damn this review came right on time. Always on point. Tower Defense and Platforming? Yes!! Looking forward to this. Hoping there are at least some bosses hidden within.
There are and the bosses hit hard
I think the hybrid of two genres is sweet. Nier Automata did this pretty well at some points switching to 2d side scrolling. Certain Zelda games have done this as well.
That moment when you are a religious weeb and kill la kill fan and start perving on Eve but then you realize she's technically your distant Grandmother...
You win today!
Nice.. adds a lot of background to a tower defense setup. Guess I will add yet another to my wishlist lol
Great review! Btw, Actraiser was awesome!!
lovely looking game, thanks for the review, i enjoy the 0-100 scoring system, adds 'value' to it, heh. and the fact you discuss what each point is and why you give the points, Spectacular work
The buildings remind me a little bit of krush kill 'n destroy. What a game that was.
Building now smarter
Whenever I see an amazing animated intro like that, my head is going ‘please don’t be pixel art! please don’t be pixel art!’
😂you would rather have half asses C+ gameplay looking like N64?
Got a bit of Herzog Zwie in there too...I like it
Big time Act Raiser vibes from the SNES days game play wise which is fine with me. Thanks for the honest & fair reviews gentlemen.
No worries mate, yeah Actraiser vibes here for sure. Glen
Great review. I saw this game on GOG and put it on my wishlist.
Appreciate that after watching your reviews I always know if the game is a good fit. In this case not for me. Hybrid games aren't my favorites unless I love both types. Glen did an awesome job.
i think ill pick this up when it goes on sale some time, this is def a type of game i would like
Fantastic review as always. i have to admit i haven been on the fence with this one. its a fringe purchase atm. i just preordered a physical of Battle Axe. its pedigree is top tier retro and that art from Henk Nieborg is just sublime and it also has music from Manami Matsumae. It was an instant purchase for me, from devs associated with shantae and mighty switch force. Henk did that artwork for lionhart (the psygnosis game for the amiga) on of my favourite games on commodore. And to top it, recently worked on xenocrisis.
hopefully you will review this one mate, right up your street,
Yeah, chances are I'll be reviewing that one mate. I hadn't had a chance to see who was involved, the fact it was a top down hack and slash was good enough for me but that's got me even more interested. Glen
Adam and Eve as only a game Dev can picture it. :) Cheers for the review.
Thanks for the review!
Glad to see this old act raiser formula once again, sure will give it a try
My soul has been craving a new ActRaiser kinda game for so long that I preordered this over a week ago! So excited to play it~
What did u think?
If you're looking for something to scratch that itch that only ActRaiser did, I highly recommend Smelter. There's a ton of content, the pixel art and coloration is phenomenal, the music is good, and it really hits that nice gameplay balance between platforming and tower defense. That said, I do miss hearing from your followers from ActRaiser lol
@@Setsuzoku thanks for the info, yeah that part where ur a god is pretty cool
One of my biggest issues is how Smelter himself in those parts of the game where you have to just play as him in these bullet hell segments, he has pretty much no invincibility frames, and that can really drive a man crazy.
Great review. Love getting surprised by games like this. I may be in Canada - and thus the price tag requires the selling of my kidney - but I like this game's style too much to pass it up.
Thank you for covering this. Been waiting for this game to come since last year! Kinda rough on the controls score, though
It's just not as fluid as a game of this nature needs to be. Not bad by any means, hence the 14/20, but not quite, 'right' either. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt fair enough. Still appreciate all you guys do for us Switchers
Looks super solid. Will keep an eye on this one.
The Smelter looks like Kill La Kill plus Tales of Berseria.
The platforming segments seemed good.
Not the instabuy that I hoped for, but I’m definitely gonna get this one on a sale since it seems to get the blend right.
I like Eve's character design and the gameplay so I'm very invested in this game
Might just try this out because I Love Actraiser so much. Also curious about the religious theme although it doesn't look as reverent as Actraiser
Picked this up 2 weeks ago and have been playing all morning since it was available. Loving it so far. Would give it a 18 out 20 IMO. Also, at the beginning, if you have Adam just keep walking past the apple, you get an ending.
Really? Haha, that's pretty funny. Glen
Love ActRaiser. One of my favorite SNES games.
Will wait for a sale for this one
So it's a retelling of the Adam and Eve legend, except Adam vanishes after eating the apple, and Eve wears the serpent as a kinky, strength-boosting reptile bikini so she can save her wayward partner. Sometimes you just need to take a moment to remind yourself of just how weird video games really are as a medium.
I was totally thinking ACTRAISER 1!
Love the art style. too bad there aren't more anime moments like in the beginning.
Looks pretty decent. I'll wait for a sale though
The platforming segments imo are worth the tower defense parts, played the demo and bought it on steam. It's unfortunate it's not getting enough publicity. I would of never found this game if it wasn't part of some steam indie festival demo segment.
Looks like SMB3/Actraiser/Mega man and advanced wars and a tower defence. Interesting.
May I ask about how long it took you to beat the game?
While playing this I was thinking, "ha ha, it Actraiser"
I can see someone agrees with me
Who ever's Smelter dealt her.
While this seems decent enough, and I like action platforming, tower defence doesn’t really vibe with me, so I might pass on it for the moment. Thanks for the review.
looks like i will pick it up once they patch it a bit
OMG, it's Act Raiser
I'm glad we're finally getting a decent Actraiser spiritual successor after the disappointment that was SolSeraph. My backlog is too big, but this baby is coming with me anyway.
It looks like a really good game....unfortunately my hate for any tower defense is brighter than the stars.
Yeah, you need to be on board with both gameplay styles for sure. Glen
Platforming oh yes please
Tower defense style oh no thank you
I wait for a very deep sale on this
Thanks
All this needed to be was better than SolSeraph
Reminds me of ActRaiser for SNES.
Very Actraiser ish i love it
Nice one more metrovania on the way!?
Nice
Designwise, I have to think of Zero from the Mega-Man-series...
The overworld part looked more "real time strategy" than "tower defence."
Yeah, I guess you could say that.
How is fps on switch??
It's funny because the criticisms outlined in this review are pretty close to why I never loved Actraiser. Yes, it presents as two different genres, but the execution of both is average at best. It's a jack of all trades/master of none situation.
i love smelter its a good game.
Shovel knight has a lot to answer for. It seems every other game looks like that to me. Looks canny though. Cheers
Can this game play in android phone 🤔
The game is much better than the messenger. You cannot give 17 for music and graphics on the messenger and give smelter only 15 and 16.
I think art and sound are one of the most subjective areas - if you think it’s as good then you can kind of up rate those areas. Good game :) Mark
Quite a good game but this looks like Actraiser and personally, I think that old game did it better.
Will wait for sale. And hope they patch it.
✌️
This almost reminds me of Act Raiser... and you say the same thing at the 4-minute mark.
Yeah it shares some similarities mate. Glen
Smelter... Is it a belter?
This looks like a blast, I had a ton of fun with Act Raiser back in the day, and am excited to try this one out.
Now all I want is a spiritual successor to "E.V.O.: Search for Eden"
That one's crazy hard to find a physical copy of for a good price these days! Glen
I want a modern remake of the original EVO ("4.6 Billion Year Story: The Theory of Evolution"). The SNES game is basically a kid-friendly platformer version of the original Japan-only RPG, which has the most bonkers story ever put into a video game ever.
Whoever Smelt-her, delt her.......
Dang it it looks like MegaMan x and then they grow tower defense which killed it for me and it's a shame because it looks amazing when you play as MegaMan eve lol
Oho. Ive been waiting for this really. 😋
Hmhmhm. So its not bad then. Nice. Ill add this to my wishlist.
Smeller
I love the concept but Im so done with pixel art 2D side scrollers. Maybe Ill check it out on a sale.
This very much seems like a candidate for "but is that armour style really sensible?". I really thought we'd moved past this.
I for one enjoy this sort of nonsensical armor design and am glad its slowly coming back into videogames. It's a good shorthand to say: "be ready to suspend a lot more realism and take our setting less seriously", which to me is appealing. Plus I enjoy this sort of costume by default. I dont want every AAA game to be like this, but I'd certainly like a few more combat bikini Amazons in modern videogames than what we have at present.
Its. A. Video. Game.
It doesn't have to be sensible. She literally has a magical green blob on her that attacks monsters. Does that seem sensible to you? Stop fussing over stupid crap.
Just got risk of rain 2 as its on sale. This looks good though..
This is the closest thing to an Actraiser clone on Switch, but it looks a little disappointing. How do we get Actraiser on a modern console??
Hopefully it will be added to the Switch SNES online service at some point. It was on the Wii Virtual Console so fingers crossed. Glen
I got this for PS4 and it is not disappointing at all. A neat mechanic in this game is that the 3 elements Eve uses have a Rock Paper Scissors theme to them.
Actraiser?
Yeah, similar premise
Game is good but not for me. I need more games like Metroid where it's more focused on adventure rather than the challenge.
This looks interesting 🤔
Good review. Don't think I'll be getting this one.
Did they not want to make it so Eve took the fruit for sexist reasons or something seems like a very deliberate detail to change to me
Like an old mobile phone game not for me
I am sorry, but there are just too many gimmicks in this game, and most 2d platformers. Call me Old School, but I'd rather just replay Chasm, or Grim Valor instead of cluttering my backlog. Kaze and the Wild Masks is a Perfect example of how a game can be good, without resorting to constant SWITCHUPS in mechanics and gameplay. (See what I did There?)
Haha, I do see what you did there and you make a fair point. There are quite a few mechanics at play for sure. Glen
This is just an ActRaiser ripoff from the SNES days.
So basically a poor copy of the actraiser remake.
I love how Adam is the original sinner
What a terrible way of distorting the important biblical story of Adam and Eve. Definitely passing. Which is a shame because it looks fun, just can't overlook the terrible story idea. I'll just stick w my Actraiser. And good review as always.
Hard pass
That is why i love nintendo switch..they make a lot a games with a retro style from the 90's...
