little tip, Dave: unless it's pertinent to a review thesis point / argument, you don't actually need to exposition on story details (edit: describing the setting and premise). That's all stuff we can pick up from a fact sheet, a Wiki or a store page's synopsis. It also kills the pacing of written reviews (even when they're read aloud by yourself or another), and makes it too "wordy" to listen to.
I've been excited about this game, and have been going through reviews of it over the last few days. I decided to pick it up today while it was still at discount as it looks very promising.
The fact that everything is explained and very detailed is also a big plus. Makes it easy for anyone to pick up and play and get lost in the game for hours
The game is actually pretty deep. It's one thing to see the numbers and it's another thing entirely to effectively put that knowledge to use. Considering less than 10% have the achievement for beating the last boss it seems like a lot of people just give up eventually. Then again, it's also a very long game.
I got it on Xbox gamepass and it's a really great game to have as your second game while another is your prime time. Love hopping on for an hour here and there. Awesome.
@@aamaca3790 Yes I played Nexomon. Its a good Pokemon like game with a great story, characters and humor. Its written very well but in my opinion can't compare. Monster Sanctuary is just doing so many things that make you think I wish this was done before. Or make you wonder why isnt this a thing in other games. The mechanics are simple to understand but difficult to master and idk man its just a great game.
@@testinggenshinimpact1268 I think that's being unfair to Nexomon given that it started its life as a mobile game, before the dev pumped out a proper game (points for his commitment to bug fixes as well). There's also the matter of the style of game being different. Yes, there's monster taming, but Sanctuary is far closer to a Dragon Warrior Monsters title than it is a Pokemon game, whereas Nexomon is far closer to (original) Pokemon itself. That being said I've enjoyed both far more than any Pokemon since ORAS, so people should have no problem picking both up since they're relatively cheap.

Huge Pokemon and Metroid fan here. Saw this game and my eyes lit up! Bought a copy, started playing.. Immediately had to buy my fiance a copy of her own! She is now hooked and I can say that this is easily the best monster catching rpg we've played in years. 10/10!!!!
Two questions if you don't mind answering; What's the cost? Do you have an idea on the length and replayability based on what you've played so far? Thanks in advance.
This is popular in SwitchUp's discord and those fantastic people convinced me to pick up this gem a couple days ago. Great review Dave and a fantastic delivery Glen! Loved this video review.
Honestly you guys are the only switch page I trust and thoroughly enjoy the videos in their entirety. Thank you for being a solid reference in a world filled with options.
I bought Immortal Fenyx Rising and Monster Sanctuary. That's the best games I bought this December. Kinda playing it back n forth. Monster Sanctuary is really a chill game with Pokémon feels with lot of skill tree lol I bought these two before watching the SwitchUp Reviews. 😁
I have played a lot of Pokémon over the last years and from what i've played so far (of Monster Sanctuary) it reminds me more of the old SNES rpg games and some Dragon Quest Monsters mixed into it. I do see why people make the pokemon comparison, but i think it's more of a superficial comparison.
@@D2daICE true really the monster catching and types are the only Pokémon like things about it, the actual combat system and leveling gives me more dragon quest vibes
I just got this on release. I’m having a blast with this game. Deep skill trees and rpg elements. Beautiful sprits and pixel art with a kicking soundtrack. It’s definitely worth a pick up.
I bought it when it first came out the graphics were terrible you have bought it at the perfect time after the patch. I’ve been back on it since done a couple of planets on it enjoy!! I am 🤓
Loving the look of this. I was very disappointed with Sword and Shield so I've been on the hunt for a replacement monster catching game. It's a tossup between this or Nexomon!
And this is why I love this channel so much. We share similar tastes and so I trust your opinions more than others. Seen a few reviews that were...mixed...to be nice. This was honest and got to the meat of what the game is and what makes it fun. Will be picking it up now. Cheers.
This is a great review but a couple of things seem missing, I've played 20+ hours so far.... 1. There is online PvP that can increase the gameplay into 100s of hours 2. The evolution mechanic is nothing like Pokemon as the monster doesn't carry over moves but instead gets a completely different skill tree, for example: In Pokemon Greninja is a powered up Froakie with a few new moves. Crackle Knight becomes Sizzle Knight which plays completely differently and requires a different team to make it work. Slight spoiler: There is a thing called shifting which is more like evolution in pokemon where the monster becomes stronger, also there are 2 different shifts which changes the colour of the monster, essentially there are 303 monsters to catch, maybe 301 as I don't know if there is more than 1 'legendary' (Like Mewtwo etc)
@@terps710 When you get to the big tree you can evolve a few of the monsters but you need specific items for each one, for Shifting you need to finish the sun temple
@@terps710 Bit of advise, don't waste the shifting stones as most shifted monsters can be caught in the wilds, save the stones for the unique champions...
This is the best game that I’ve played in a while, the combat and leveling is really fun and I think the combination of platforming and monster catching is super unique. I also like how it’s actually challenging and forces u to use strategy, I love Pokémon but the news games have gotten super easy

Absolutely wonderful game! I've never been big into stat/build management but this is so fun and feels very fresh. I personally really dig the chess like/tactical feel of the battles. Very highly recommended by a long time monster taming fan!
A year after release, it was on sale for around $7 USD. I applied some nintendo coins to it and ended up buying this game for $4. Excellent price for this game.
It's really good. I got it on Steam a week before the Switch release and double dipped to support the developer. Haven't got overly far (just did the first Tamer Duel in the stronghold) but am thoroughly enjoying the mix of monster raising and metroidvania.
This looks pretty fun. I’ve been looking for alternatives to Pokémon since Scarlet and Violet are a complete disaster. I love metroidvania style gameplay and combining it with Pokémon sounds like it’s right up my alley.
Hey switchup maybe ive missed somethin cuz im not a native english speaker but do the monsters evolve ? And if so, does the game tell u when u meet a mon, that it can evolve ? Thx for review !
Lots of good games coming to Switch recently. This looks right up my street, not a huge fan of Metroidvania games but the combat & monster collecting looks fun & surprisingly deep, on the watch list for sure!
I'm happy that you guys reviewed this game. I owned this on PC for more than a year now, and I can confidently say that it's one of the best games I've recently played. 😄 Some points I'll add to their review! + Probably to avoid spoilers, but aside from skill trees and equipment, monster customization goes deeper once you get past a certain story point in the game. + Battle music can be changed in the Options menu between "Original" and "Alternate". Former has this calm battle theme that the video mentioned, and the latter has this upbeat theme that, imho, fits the game better overall. Idk if this setting exists in the Switch version though. +/- The game has an auto-save feature. It activates on two instances. One is when you manually Save & Quit, and the other is when you transition from one area to another. It works well. However, you might accidentally find yourself in an unfavorable situation wherein you used a precious item on a monster and decided to revert back to an earlier save file to reclaim used item, but you can't since the game auto-saved your progress already. - As for end-game content, it is a bit shallow. Aside from a few bosses that only appears once you beat the game, you could probably do Online PvP, but that's that. Overall, buy this game. I highly recommend it. 👌👌👌
I just want to let everyone know Wargroove and Streets of Rage 4 are on sale right now and I'm pretty positive he's gonna include them both in his weekend sales video so heads up, both are amazing.
I just picked this up for $3.99!!! Its the only reason I am happy to bave forgotten about it for so long. What a steal! I love these games!! Thank you for the review! ❤
I admit, I had already picked this one up and while I haven’t played it much yet, I’ve really enjoyed it so far though. I think it’s a really clever mashup and it definitely stands out as its own thing to me. I’m glad to see to see some positive thoughts (despite some minor gripes here and there). It makes me feel relieved that I took the plunge when I did. Thanks for the great video. Always good to see these.
Heads up as well. The levels of enemies and trainers scale based off how much map you explored. Be careful because the alchemists can get brutal if you over level them.
Enjoying this game a lot. I'm a sucker for monster battler games and its a nice original idea to have a metroidvania style. Talent trees really help with some customization instead of just the normal moves on level up.
When I saw the trailer for this game a few months back I put it on my wish list..I didn't think I'd like the pixel art style, but after playing Chasm and Phoenotopia(which are really good games IMO) I like the pixel art style when it's done well..this will definitely be a game I will buy 😊
This might seem like a dumb question but does the main character get different outfits I saw a blue outfit I was wondering if you get different items or armour and does it show on your character?
Thanks for this one, Dave & Glen! The game did better than I expected and I'll pick this one up. I am also very curious to see the upcoming games as, from the videos I've gathered regarding the December releases, this one and the airplanes one were the last decent games. I just hope that's because there weren't enough announcements at that particular time. But it kind of makes sense because if you're a publisher you want to release your games before, not during, Christmas. I expect a drought until next year and I wouldn't mind being proven wrong.

God I want this game badly. It looks so cool! Pokemon + 2d platformer + pixelated + a bit of grind, my god. The ultimate combo. Can't wait till it has a bit of a discount!
Solid gameplay wise for both the exploration and the battles/skills. Having one of every monster is actually useful due to them being used for platforming and puzzle solving. It could use some optimisation on Switch though to smooth some of the stuttering (though the stutters aren't career ending, more like skips that occasionally happen).
played the beta a while back. Really enjoyed the game at the point. So glad it came to Switch though! Might have to get this one while its got the hot sale!
i'm really enjoying this game so far, pokemonvania is really fun on this game. Having a blast with this game currently, especially as debuff type team I'm really enjoying building team in this game.
I really enjoy the idea of mashing two genres that work well into a single game. Golf story did it and had a great time. If the biggest issue is it looks and sounds too much like other well done pixel art games, there's not much to be concerned about. I'll pick this up at a deeper sale as I have a backlog to catch up with
There is an internet site for this, just Google how long to beat on Google and there is an site where you just type the name of the game and it tells you how long to beat at any % and how long it takes if you 100%

played the beta a while back.
I'll pick this up at a deeper sale as I have a backlog to catch up with
Golf Story is so good. I want a baseball sequel!
I have been waiting for this... Let's find Out 😎👏💯
Can somebody tell me how much does it take to beat the game?
There is an internet site for this, just Google how long to beat on Google and there is an site where you just type the name of the game and it tells you how long to beat at any % and how long it takes if you 100%
Just picked it up, looks fun, two kinds of games I like
