I hit the developer up on twitter to let them know I think the game looks good and asked if they were going to include the issues you raised down the line. Also suggested DLC characters as Shovel Knight and Shauntae would fit nicely

I had myself convinced this was a $20 USD title. Finding out it's $30 with way too little content will have me waiting for the inevitable 50% sale. It's a shame, I love the artists involved :(

Since the beginning of the kickstarter campaign, it always looked like those classic top down fantasy arcade games. So I don't know why people are expecting some kind of big action RPG.
I think it cost me about £35 to get the tier in the kickstarter where I'd also get a copy of the game, and that's a fair price I think
If you think it's too expensive, why don't you just make more money?

@@duffman18 When OP talked about content, I assume he meant more maps, not RPG elements. That's a pretty valid complain. This game absolutely lacks in content. Being ''Arcade''-ish isn't an excuse. Let's dig up a couple of examples. You mentioned Classic Fantasy Arcade games. So, I'm sure these titles here qualify:
(According to the Reviewer, 7:15, this game here can be beaten in 30m if played without mistakes, and 3h with a trial and error approach)
Dungeon Magic/Light Bringer: 1h14m No Mistakes Playthrough - 30m for this game
D&D Shadow over Mystara: 1h5m No Mistakes on Hard, 4p - 30m for this game
Magic Sword - Heroic Fantasy: 1h17m No Mistakes - 30m for this game
Big Karnak: 36m 1 Coin...hey...at least is close to the - 30m for this game
Need also to point out that NONE of these games had JUST 4 Maps, btw.
The reason why Arcade Games are short, is because they were meant to be a fill-in for a very limited time. That's how Arcades were, fast food of entertainment, drop in and out. It's not like gaming on a PC or Console. On top of the fact that the resources were limited. What I mean by that is:
When you say you wanna make an ''Arcade Feel'' type of game in current year, it's expected that you're talking about the ''style'' and mechanics, not that it's 30m long and 4 maps. What's next? Literal hardware that asks you for coins? that at the end of the play sessions you have to deliver to the devs? hahahah
$30 for 30m or 3h is insanely expensive.
      Dust: An Elysium Tale

It's basically an insult. They think just because it's a retro pixel art game they can charge whatever the want for it.
There are tiers of consumer ripoffs:
      1. Normal electronics product
      2. Gamer product
      3. Retro gamer product
      #3 gets fleeced.

@@TheDorianTube The game got a budget of £73k on Kickstarter, that barely pays for two developers for one year. Bare in mind the devlopers aren't juniors, these are people who know their shit in the industry of game development. I'm not so sure that it's high wages for the developers. The publishers mark the price, maybe for them?

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 3 года назад

@@SwitchUpYt I love Ghoul Patrol for the amazing art style of it. But I think zombies ate my neighbours is the better game overall. I never played either of them till my 30s, I have no nostalgia for them. It's a shame cos I think I'd have loved to own zombies ate my neighbours on my mega drive. Oh well at least I can play it now.
It deserves a proper sequel I think. Well a sequel to both ZAMN and ghoul patrol. Like the new streets of rage sequel which is absolutely fantastic, and the upcoming new teenage Mutant Hero Turtles beat em up that looks exactly like what you'd expect a mid 90s sequel to Turtles in Time or Hyperstone Heist to look like, like it's an imaginary lost game that would have been on the saturn and ps1.
Or it also reminds me of the new Toejam and Earl game, even though I was disappointed that game was based way more on the first one instead of the side scrolling platformer sequel to Toejam and Earl. That side scrolling platformer is still one of the most unique looking games on 16 bit consoles. It sells the alien planet thing perfectly. I love that game to bits. Luckily there was enough of stuff from that game as well as the first Toejam and Earl, in the new sequel. Like searching trees for stuff
So yeah anyway just get this company to do a proper ZAMN sequel after they've finished the new TMNT game

I see a modern-day version of GOLDEN AXE from the Sega Genesis when I look at this one. The only thing missing is the little thieves that drop potions when you hit them. It seems really well done in its aesthetic, it’s soundtrack, and to have been faithful to the arcade games of old. The major selling point for this game is the fact that you're getting basically a classic retro 80s/90s genuine arcade experience. That in itself is what I live for so it's a must have for me. If I had the choice I'd purchase this game on a Neo Geo AES cartridge if it was made available. It would of been nice to see at least six to eight levels but maybe they will make up for that with a sequel.👍😎👌

Great review, First thing that came to my mind was zombies ate my neighbours too. Its the sound too. Genuinely looks like a snes or megadrive game. I'm happy to overlook a few niggles with this. However..4 levels and 30mins to 4 hours runtime, 😒. Why didn't they create a gauntlet style random generated endless run mode? Let's hope they do. Oh well ordered the physical anyway.
Next up is the Alex kidd remake and the new wonderboy game for me . Great to have these old mascots making a return. Although...I hated random janken.

Some oversight in coding must have happened relating to level 3. I'm sure the devs will fix that with a patch..

I supported this kickstarter, so you've got me to thank for it 😂 nah just kidding. I actually forgot that I'd backed it until recently. So I guess that I can now get my copy of it somehow. I don't even know how it works with downloaded games, do they give you a code to enter?
But yeah it's got some of the most gorgeous pixel art I'd ever seen, and it looks just like those sort of arcade top down hack and slash games with a fantasy setting. I love those kinda games, so I just backed this on a whim really. I'm very glad I did

The game looks good! It might sound harsh, but I'll wait and see if it eventually gets 75% off. That sounds more appropriate to me. But I'm probably just cheap.

You're not cheap. I'm thinking the same thing. $30 is way too expensive for a game like this.

I'm probably target audience since I was born in the 80s thus full into video games in the 90s, but it doesn't grab my attention. Seeing the other comments I'm happy for other people though.

It sounds like they were so busy imitating that old school design, they decided to make the price authentic. $30 for this kind of content just doesn't sound right anymore. We're past the age of paying a premium over quarter munching. The art and presentation seem really nice, but unless you're diehard for it, I can kind of see myself saying "needs a sale" even if it started at half its price. The level count, life system, and simple gameplay just all cast it too niche for me to buy it so high. I do really love the core idea, but only in a suits-a--specific-mood kind of way.

When you treat the game as a 90's game, the price would make sense though. It has the same amount of content of the average 90's game. The pricing is pretty ok in my opinion.

Wow 30$ - I got it from the Kickstarter for 15$ and I’m enjoying it for what it is but I agree they should have dropped it to maybe 20 or add a bit more. It was in development for a short time it felt like wonder if they coulda just put a little bit more into it and released next year. Shame because the game is genuinely fun and feels great to play
