    this is JUST what i needed to hear
    Im in my first year of basic sciences, and when you said the reason why some med students burn out is because they study way too much, that's me right there. I was an elite athlete up until about 2 and a half years ago, but as soon as i joined med school i abandoned my fit lifestyle and just studied studied all the time..sat in the library all day studying, and although my grades so far have been really high, the burnout has been VERY real, almost to the point where you ask yourself "what am i suffering for?"
    Im the kind of person that loves to laugh, go out with friends and stay fit, but all this seemed to go out the door when i began med school, and i know now that sacrifice is good, but there also has to be a healthy balance.
    I will be starting my term 2 next week, and been really thinking of ways to implement a healthier lifestyle. Med school is a marathon and not a sprint, and watching this has given me a lot more insight into how to live a better life while pursuing this dream, so thank you for that :)

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  8 лет назад

      Good for you! Each year of med school gets better and better (in my opinion) and I am sure you will find that healthy balance. I always say I love medicine but I don't want it to be the only thing that I love. Good luck!

    I am a med student in Switzerland and I just failed my yearly exams because I just could not get molecular cell in my head. I am now studying for the redo exams but ugh... I am in such a motivational low and I am afraid if I fail again I am banned from studying medicine... Also insomnia is real annoying... I used to watch stuff but I am afraid the stuff I studied gets lost. ugh the struggle... thanks for the video :)

      I'm so sorry. Medical school is hard, it is hard for everyone. Just focus on the things that you can control - work ethic. If the material is not sticking than you need to find a different approach. Study smarter! not harder. Good luck

    Thank you for reminding me about the sleep hygiene, its true, Im more efficient when I get sleep and its hard to respect sleeping time when you are stressed, but I agree, I feel better when I sleep vs not sleeping, it makes a huge difference in my mood. also, I like to take naps to recharge after class, since the day is intense, then I get up, make myself a tea, and study till about 10 or 11 depending on the day. I wake up at 6:30 or 7am since I fall asleep around midnight after watching an episode of netflix. How many hours of sleep do you get and what is your sleep schedule?

      A 6 pack is made in the kitchen. A person can lose weight by just changing their diet alone. If you want to tone, start slow. Maybe just 30 minutes a day. Find a gym buddy. Your body will naturally crave it once you've got a routine going.

    • @holywierdo
      @holywierdo 8 лет назад +2

      Thank you!! no it doesn't include residency, it's so much different than how it is in the states. so once we graduate from high school we get into college and study a whole preparatory/foundation year. at the end, depending on your GPA and performance you get into medical school, it is pretty competitive. so basically in order to get your MBBS (i think it's equivelant to MD in the united states) it takes you 7 years(1 prep year + 5 medical years+ 1 internship year) after all that we begin our residencies that vary in years depending on the speciality you go for. i tried making it simple but it's much more complicated haha. HAVE A GREAT DAY!

    DO schools typically have a number of disadvantages:
    Less desirable locations
    Higher tuition
    Often not affiliated with a teaching hospital
    Weaker rotations & training during your 3rd and 4th year
    Weaker research programs
    All of this means that it's harder to match into certain specialties (residency), and harder to match into more prestigious residency programs across the board. It's much harder to become an ENT as a DO than it is from an MD school

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  8 лет назад +1

      I am sorry but I would have to disagree with you.
      We are affiliated with teaching hospitals. We take the same exams. And there has been a merger - which means that there is now a single GME accreditation system. In layman's terms - DOs and MDs will be applying to the same residency programs and there will be one match.
      My DO friends have matched into ophthalmology, urology, general surgery, and OBGYN.

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  8 лет назад

      and may I ask - what kind of doctor will you become?

    • @kimnavarro1740
      @kimnavarro1740 8 лет назад

      In my opinion I would rather have an old school MD than a modern DO but that's just my opinion. Weaker entrance scores to matriculate at a DO school still make me skeptical the physician is better than say someone who matriculated from say UCLA Med.

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  8 лет назад +1

      +Kim Navarro based on your answer, it seems like you are not in medical school yourself. There is no such thing as old school and modern. All physicians are required to be up to date on all the latest guidelines. And it does not mater if a MD graduates from UCLA med school, he or she will still have to attend residency before they can officially practice medicine. Many MDs and DOs attend THE SAME residency - this is what I mean when I spoke of the merger above.

    I really enjoyed your video!! Probably is because everything you said has happened to me too. Quick question, don't you get fatigued sometimes with your workouts and just get too tired to study? Because it happens to me a lot! I would workout and when study time arrived I only lasted about an hour or maybe less...

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  8 лет назад

      Sometimes, but most of the time I study right after and that's when I'm most awake. If you get fatigued, you can try pushing your work outs to later in the day when you have already finished studying. Or you can try drinking a little bit of caffeine/green tea/preworkout before hand to give you a little boost both during and after your workouts.
      You might just be hitting it too hard. Cut work effort to 70% and see how you feel. Hope that helps!

    Hi Jenny! I just came across your channel. Do you have any advice on students taking the MCAT? I just graduated college and now am trying to study for my MCAT. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to study, dealing with bad practice exam scores, and just good study skills in general. Do you have any advice? Thanks so much! :)

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  8 лет назад +1

      The test has changed so much since I've last taken the exam. But what helped improve my score the most was doing practice test AND going over all the answers (both right and wrong). The MCAT repeats a lot of the same types of questions and going over your exam allows learn from your mistakes quickly. I would go through 1 eight hour practice test everyday for 2-3 weeks before my exam. Took notes on things I wanted to remember or review. And then reviewed those notes the next day before I took another practice test.
      Looking back, I'd opt to take an MCAT course. I know these courses can be expensive. A surgical resident once told me "Never spear any expense on your education because it is an investment in yourself and your life goal of becoming a doctor. Pennies in a bucket. You'll make all that money back one day, you just need to get there."
      Hope that helped! let me know if you have any other questions.

    I enjoy watching advice videos to manage heavy school loads. Great video. I have the same problem; insomnia from an overactive mind. Watching Dr. Oz on TV, I learned of an OTC herbal supplement for sleep. It is called astragulus root. It takes about 30mins to kick in, and you can get 3-5 hours of uninterrupted sleep without side effects. They are good to have on the nightstand.
    Great idea to plan a year in advance. Do you have memorization, stress-management, or time-management tips (new videos)?

    Are your really really stress out all the time? Or is it like high school, where you're stressed out during exams and big projects, because I feel like anything assigned in med school, i would stress about thanks! BTW love your lashes!

      Afghan Girl Medical school is a totally different beast so I think it just depends on your personality. I know people who stress all the time, I usually only stress when the stakes are high.

    Is it possible not to pull an all-nighter AT ALL in med school? Lack of sleep or no sleep just makes me sooo cranky and unable to think. I was just wondering.

    Hey sorry I have been spamming your RUclips all day. How did you decide where to go for med school?

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  7 лет назад

      +Gabrielle Brown The physician I shadowed was taught by one of the physicians who founded my school. He suggest I apply and I really like the school when I interviewed. But the best advice I got while applying to medical school was - cast your net wide, you can always pick and choose later.

    Do you have to pay to go to Medical School ? Is it a private school or financed by the state ? I am not from the US so please excuse my lack of information.

    • @drjennale
      @drjennale  8 лет назад +1

      john doe All students must pay for medical school. Private schools would be more expensive.

    Girl what foundation do you use? Your skin is flawless oh my lord. How did you have time to read way of kings? lmfao. I'm in undergrad and I have it... I just stare at it as it gathers dust.

      I use Makeup Forever Ultra HD. It looks ok in person but amazing on camera. My skin was actually pretty unhappy in the video.
      I try to read a chapter or two every night before bed to clear my mind. But sometimes the storyline gets too good and I end up reading till 3 AM. Haha I pay for it the next day.
