going well, currently at the end of my second year of med school, crunch time for shelf exams and prep for step 1. Other than now, has been a pretty low stress and interesting ride.
no, I was 28 when I decided to go into medicine, I started a post-bacc that year and I think applied at 30 after I finished. I didn't study any science in undergrad so had to do all the prereq. classes. It's not that uncommon, there are maybe 15 people older than me in my class, and at least 30 ppl around 27-30 age.
Thank you so much for saying this! I'm currently finishing my BA in Communications and have been playing with the idea of going to Medical School. My GPA is far from Medical School acceptance - when you took your post bac classes, is that what your Med School weighed most?
I really love watching videos related to Med School! I want to become a doctor since I'm 17, I'm 23 now, and now I finally have the chance to graduate from High School because I got sick before. Your videos really inspire me and push me forward. While watching this video, I drew something for my Biology class. :) Could call it relaxing! Your videos and the videos from TheStriveToFit are my favorites.
I really love what you said in another video that there's no such thing as being over-educated. I am in my final year in dentistry school and I'm applying to medical school next year. Watching this video, I got great tips so thanks!
Hey! I just found your videos and I'm obsessed. You talked about choosing med school over pa school. Could you make a video about that? I would be so interested in hearing about that and I'm sure other people are too. I want to become a pa.
I needed this. Thanks a lot! I'm a med student in Moscow, Russia currently in my 5th year and I know that I'm not exercising my full potentials being here. The standard of med education here in Russia has exponentially decreased over the years and it makes me very nervous that I'll graduate a "half baked doctor". Last month, I finally decided to start studying for the USMLE Steps (after procrastinating for 2 years) and this morning, I decided that I also want to sit for the MCAT exam and start my med school journey all over from scratch. I've been up since the wee hours of the morning scouring the net and RUclips for all the info I can get on how to proceed with this in terms of eligibility, requirements, registration, best study materials etc and stumbling upon your video has given me a boost of confidence. Med school here is 6 years and I'm in my early 20s given that I'm in my penultimate year. Hearing you say that you took a gap year and eventually got accepted into med school at 24 was really encouraging and made me not feel that I'll be an "old applicant" by the time i apply to US med schools. So, Thanks a lot for your refreshing honesty and transparency. Best of luck with everything! ~Luchie (Moscow, Russia 🇷🇺)
Thank you so much for watching. I know several physicians who have come to practice in the states. I am unsure of their exact process but I believe they only have to pass the board exam and attend residency (3-5 years depending on speciality) instead of attending 4 years medical school again. I wish you the best of luck on your medical journey.
Thank you for this video, I've been following for quite awhile but never seen this video surprisingly. Your words and advice put me at ease and let me know that I can't always stress for the future. I'm currently trying to graduate high school within this month, so technically a year early, and enroll into community college. I've been stressing over my career choices but watching you put me at ease and just let me figured out that I shouldn't be so hung over it just yet and see what my interests are. Thank you and so far I'm leaning towards either dental or medical.
Shara A. Nelson There are a lot of reasons to pursue MD/DO over NP, such as scope of practice, medical theory vs. nursing theory and the approach of medicine vs. nursing, autonomy in all states, depth of knowledge, etc.
I’ve been going back and forth between becoming a doctor or NP and for me, nursing interests me more because it is more one-on-one patient care. NPs can do a lot of stuff that doctors can do, also.
Congratulations on your decision! This is the third video right now and I love how you really helped us understand every step. Best of wishes! You WILL be great! See you around!!!
Stumbled upon your video and so glad I found it!! I'm a grad student at Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine, I'm studying for the MCATs for the first time haha and this video really helped motivate me. And you're gorgeous!! Looking forward to more of your videos :)
I'm so glad I watched this video. Thank you for this, it really motivated me a lot. 😭😭 This have absolutely sparked my interest into actually going to Med School. (whoo!)
Thanks so much for making this video! Its very inspiring/motivating. Im currently still in undergrad and I was contemplating taking a gap year, but I was so nervous that I would be making the wrong decision. But this totally gives me another perspective. The process can be so overwhelming!
I'm about to apply for medical school but in Mexico, it's interesting to now how the application process is made in the US. I just found your channel and I love it!💜 you are a role model for me!🙆
Wow! I love this video of yours I grew up with Asian parents through and I m going through exactly what you went through and I just realized medicine is what I really wanna do! Thank you for this video it really helped motivate me that it's not too late
Hi Jenny, I recently discovered your channel and I want to say thank you so much for what you do! Your videos have been so helpful especially in understanding what medical school is really like. Thanks again! :)
Simplest question to ask yourself is... do you want to be the boss (doctor) or do you want to work under someone (PA)? Other things to consider are can you live off student loans for 4 years and make garbage as an resident (doctor) or do you want to make 100k+ in just 3-4 years (PA)? Do you want to spend your life just doing "one thing" (doctor) or switch specialities whenever you want (PA)? For me it was simple, I want to be the boss.
The more medical experience you get, the clearer your choice will be. I shadowed a DO who practiced OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment) and knew that I could not have a career in which I did not learn/use OMT.
This is exactly what I was looking for. I relate to almost everything you said, from the strict parenting, no going out to being lost in the first year of college. I'm currently doing medical laboratory science and biotechnology, this summer I'm working on my first literature review paper and wanted to know how much you encourage working on research as a means of getting into medical school. Thanks! :)
Joel Thomas she said she went to the university of washington for medical school. The average gpa for students accepted to that school is a 3.8 so imagine its around there. She definitely has something above 3.5 as most medical students do.
thank you so much for making this video! I am turning 21 next year and I still didn't get accepted to university (in Germany) but I am doing any possible thing to improve my chances, you just gave me so much hope ! So thank you!
I just found your channel and I love it! I also went to Revelle College at UCSD for my undergrad and I was a human biology major. I really loved attending UCSD it was such a great experience and I learned so much. Congrats on pursuing your dreams! Also, I just watched your new video on your pregnancy so congrats on growing your family! That is amazing. Hope to see more of your videos, have a great day :)
Thanks a lot for these videos! I'm going to be a junior next year and I'm starting in a medical program at a new school, still not sure if I'm going to pursues medical school or nursing but your videos are really pushing me to go to medical school!!
Hiiii just found your channel today and I just need to say you're awesome girl! I love hearing your experience and watching your vlogs they have inspired me definitely! No questions here (yet) just keep doin' what you're doing and know you've gained another passenger for the ride! :)
You are so amazing, loved listening to your journey. You really instill motivation in me to say the least ! Thanks Jenny ! I know you are going to make an exceptional Doc 😊
Here I come to bombard with questions lol! 1! Was it a hard choice for you to decide that taking a gap year would be best? 2! How many medical school accepted you? And 3 (if you don't mind answering this of course) what was your GPA upon graduating?
1. A lot of people take gap years before medical school. I was not a hard decision for me a lot. And if I had to do it again, I would still take a gap year. I have the rest of my life to be a doctor. 2. Two schools accepted me 3. 3.6 (granted I did have a dance minor so that boosted my GPA a bit)
Have you done a video on your mission trips abroad??? I've been wanting to go into that too but I don't know where to start, and it'll obviously cost a lot of extra money, and just everything about it. So pleeeaseee make a video on how you landed those mission trips, how you paid for them, what you did there, and any tips on how to find good and meaningful mission trips for premed students. Thanks!!!
I am a single mom and 32 years old. I have not been able to focus on my education because I have to always work. I have decided to get it done now and I am thinking of PA first and then maybe DO. This was very inspiring. Thank you!!!
girl, I call that being "lock down" and I can totally relate LOL (my parents are Ghanaian and I have a theory that 1st generation kids go through a lock down childhood)
The first two years of medical school is the suckiest. Lecture from 8-5 then an hour or two break for gym and dinner. Study till midnight. Then do it all over again. It is mentally and physically exhausting. But worth it!
sebastian cuello if you have worked hard to get into med school, I am sure you will be just fine when school start. Things will be a little tough in the beginning but you will soon get use to it.
Hi everyone! If you are interested in military medicine and having the military pay for your medical education, please feel free to check out my video where I break down my experience with the Health Professions Scholarship Program in full transparency.
what was your undergrad GPA if you don't mind me asking , I really want to go to med school but I'm at my junior year and have a 3.2 so I'm scared I'm just gonna waste my time applying and should just do PA.
If being a physician is really what you want to do, then go for it! apply BOTH DO and MD when the time comes. Take a gap year if it will help you improve your application. And you still have junior and senior year to bring up your GPA. Being a PA is great, but it that's not what you really want to do, then don't settle for it.
You are not competitive enough for an allopathic med school. You must have a 3.7 and above and a 38 MCAT to be competitive enough to matriculate into a respectable med school.
(To Kimberly Salazar) Please refer to my original comment. Do the best with what you have, be the best applicant you can be (and apply broadly to both DO & MD), and don't worry so much about circumstances you can't control. Good luck on your journey! :)
Hi Jenny! I am a high school junior who wishes to apply for a combined BS/MD program. Do you have any tips for getting in? I have a high GPA, a strong science background, approximately 250 hours a community service (hospital and charitable work), and most importantly a desire to practice medicine.
Hi Jenny, I've watched all your videos and they're very informative! This is one specifically resonated with me. Btw, I'm also from SJ and I'll be attending UCB next year where I intend to join Phi Delta Epsilon as well! You and your videos are awesome!
Hey would you be able to do a video explaining how you funded your mission trips! I'm planning on travelling to Rwanda next summer for a medical mission trip but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to fund it!!
When I went to Vietnam, we set up clinics. There are different specialities - internal medicine, family medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, OBGYN, optometry, dentistry, and pharmacy. Depending on which speciality you work in that day, you do different things. In OBGYN I did PAP smears and LEEP procedures. All the others, I was a Jr doctor and got history and physical exam.
Hey thanks for this video!!!! Honestly I'm starting my junior year now this fall and... I'm going to start taking pre read now because I just made up my mind. I have a lot of community service, volunteering, I'm about to go to a mission trip, and I might give it a try to the SMDEP program! The only thing is I previously was interested in dental school but idk why my heart is calling medicine! And idk if is wrong that I'm scare, I'm scare to not be good enough for med school. I like that you said, everyone is different and we all get there in die rent ways. At this point I'm about to start shadowing both professions to see if Medicine wins over Dentistry , if it does i will do all it takes to get there!! Also can you make a video of being a female and being a doctor or being in med school??! I would love that also. Thanks for your time and nice encouraging videos !!! 😊
know that you're not alone. A lot of students are confused and they're not 100% certain which path they want to take (at least that was the case for me). As long as I was taking steps forward, learning, and forging new bonds - I saw those as accomplishments.
What are you tips on how to find physicians to shadow? Can you shadow physicians when you're a volunteer at a hospital or clinic or do you have to be an undergrad in college?
for the record my med school doesn't let anyone who hosts interviewees have any say in their acceptance, but uses students to interview them otherwise.
Hi! Your situation during undergrad and afterwards sounds so similar to mine! I applied this last cycle with too low of an MCAT score (got 2 interviews but didn't get in) so I'm studying my ass off and retaking it! I work with a lot of DOs and it seems like a good option for me as I didn't apply to DO schools last time. Do you like saying something about your expertise in DO school? I know it's basically the same as MD except you get to learn the osteopathic manipulation stuff
Hi, super helpful video first of all, it's rare to see med school students giving personal advice! I have a couple of questions for you: 1. How would you suggest finding those connections to start shadowing a physician/getting into a research lab if our network isn't super established yet? 2. Would you say the clinical care extender program is beneficial/necessary? For my campus, the closest CCE program is an hour commute away, and I don't have a car, so I'm trying to see whether or not the trouble of getting there is worth it, vs just volunteering at a homeless clinic. 3. Any tips for an incoming 3rd year who's trying to get their stuff together and their gpa higher?
1. google, and send emails. My friends have sent over 50 emails to find lab positions. You just have to want it enough and put in the work to research. 2. CCE is not necessary - it was just my avenue to getting volunteer experience. As long as you're volunteering - it does not have to be through CCE. 3. As you friends what courses are interesting. There are some bio classes that are easier than other and known as "BIO GPA Boosters" You would have to ask people who have taken the course before at your school.
Hiya Jenny. I'm going to start my second year at UCSD (wooo tritons unite😎) and still currently going through the phase of "what am i doing with my life". Your videos keep me inspired and thank you so much for your advice. I will definitely look into Phi Delta Epsilon! //on the side note, i was wondering if you still remember who your ochem prof was. Thanks again!
oh gosh ... I don't remember his name, I just know he was the toughest. There were originally 300 people in our class, by drop deadline there was about 50!
Honestly speaking, I'm having a hard time of picking up my course. I have two options here. Either to become a doctor, since that's what my mom wants me to be, or should I go in tourism, maybe, since it's my dream of becoming a flight attendant but I suck up with my height. (I have a cute height, in case you want to know hihi) But hearing you while giving tips made me realize that i should really try to take medicine. I was really motivated by your advices. And thank you for that. keep it up! Continue to inspire others and me :) Godbless.
Also can you do a video on what to wear when shadowing? Would you dress different if shadowing at the Hospital rather than a private office? and talk about things like that
Yes! No matter where I shadow, the first day - I will always dress business casual. Then depending on what the physicians prefer and will tailor to their preference. I can make a video on some examples and situations.
Can you do a video explaining the difference between MD and DO? I'm from Canada and have NEVER heard of a DO.... do you have the same practicing privileges? I have never seen a DO student on the wards ever or even heard of their existence. Is it like being a naturopath? Is it competitive? Can you apply for the same residencies/fellowships as MDs? And if so, how successful are DOs in getting spots?
Hey Jenny! I love watching your videos! Your wisdom and personality is so refreshing. I've learned a lot from watching your videos since I subscribed! One question I have is, how do you even begin to shadow a doctor? I feel quite intimidated by approaching them. Did it take you several tries before someone responded?
Lucky I worked with someone who was good friends with a doctor and he introduced me. Try googling doctors and calling or even going in to ask. You would be surprised how much doctors like to teach.
Phi Delta Epsilon worked with Healing Hearts Across Borders - that trip was to Mexico. My mission trip to Vietnam, I googled myself and went through an organization called Project Vietnam.
Hi ! Can you go over what materials you used to study and how you managed time to study for the MCAT ? Did you solely dedicate to the MCAt or did you work / have class during it ? I'm trying to get into dental school and need to retake the DAT. But I also work full time. Any advice helps ! Thanks
Adore your videos, I'm only a senior in high school and applying to uni in February but I'm planning on pursuing medicine. I volunteer in a children's hospital and hospice centre and truly feel like it's my calling but sometimes it's hard to stay on track and remind myself why I'm doing what I'm doing, did you ever feel discouraged and like you couldn't do it? How did you overcome that id love to know as I still have a long road ahed of me haha thanks :) P.s love your snap stories!
Everyone gets burnt out from time to time. There were days were I just felt so tired and wondered if I was good enough. The key to understand is that it is ok to step back and relax. You are right, you have a long road ahead - but its a marathon, not a race. Enjoy the journey, learn from your mistakes, and just keep pushing forward. Focus on the things you can change.
Hi, greetings from Slovakia!(not really visible state on map somewhere in the middle of Europe) 😊 I’m currently in my third year of medical school and aspiring to go to USA as IMG (if everything goes well). In your channel I always find motovation and many times I regain my own passion for medicine when I see you so honestly passionate about what you do (in dark places of examination period it literally saves me 😅). I also really enjoy vlogs of every day real family life mommy - doctor -badass. It is inspiring and I learn from it a big deal as well. :) But I hope you could do some videos about your background-moving for college or give some tips for IMGs if you have an idea what could help us for successful USMLE steps, electives-rotations-hands on experience and matching, maybe also moving abroad for pursuing medicine. Another great topic would be case studies in a way “what I learned by practicing medicine” Anyway.. thank you for the amazing content and inspiration! Bless you! 😊
In the video, You mentioned about the trip to VietNam. I am quite interested in that. Can you tell me what was the program that you signed up in order to go there ?
I would read about the lecture topic before lecture. Take notes during lecture. And rewrite my notes right after lecture. This allowed me to go over the information multiple times. Then I would just go over my pretty notes a couple more times before the exam.
Love this video; it inspires me so much! I'm hoping that my 15+ years of dance experience and the many missions trips I've been on will help make me stand out in the application/interviews. I'm only a freshman in college and a non-traditional student, but the purpose for starting school is to get into med school and become a doctor. I wanted to be in the medicine field and almost went the nursing route, but after much thought and talking things over with my husband, and figuring out where my passions lie, I'm headed for med school. My only reservation is the fact that I'm in community college (for financial and family reasons), but I'm planning to transfer to a top school in Texas. So, I'm a little nervous that not many med schools will look favorably on that specific route. Do you have any classmates in med school who went the community college route? Or any other helpful advice?
As long as your keep your grades up and score well on the MCAT, you will have no problem getting into medical starting from community college. I heard that Texas favors instate - meaning they take 70% from people living in Texas compare to other states. Good luck!
How do you ask a Doctor to let them shadow them and also when do you suggest you begin all that! I'm going to be a freshman in college in about a week, EXCITED but a little bit nervous! BTW, love your videos!!
A lot of it is who you know. My co worker from the lab had a very good friend who was a physician, so he just introduced me. You can try googling and calling if they would take students. I say the sooner you start the better. Shows medical schools that you are dedicated. Its better to shadow a doctor one or two days a month for years rather than just shadowing a doctor for a summer.
Hi Jenny, can you please tell more things about biochemistry? How did u like it? How was the courses for u? I'm an incoming freshman at U of Arizona. I'm majoring in biochem and thinking to major in economics or something different than biochem. Also, I want to go into Pharm school. 😆
Hey! Quick question, I have also been debating between what career path I wanted to take, and have finally decided to pursue a medical career. Did you mention in your interview how you have been debating and you finally realized medicine is what you wanted to pursue? Think you can make a video on interviewing tips.
I am 17 in high school. I love doing sports. I have grown up alongside doctors(my mother does programming for all the doctors in our hospital) I have always wanted to be a doctor, but then life happened and it faded away. It wasn't until recently that I realised I still wanted to be a doctor. If I knew back then I wanted to be a doctor I would have worked very hard, but sadly I didn't know. My grades are not that great... I wasn't sure if it was really what I wanted to do, but then my mother arranged for me to shadow for the surgeons at our hospital for a few days. That settled it and I knew I wanted to be a doctor. I still have about a year and a half of school left, but I do not have science. Any advice?
Train yourself to be a serious student starting now. If you want to be a doctor, you'll need to have top grades in college and know how to survive and thrive in medical school. Keep in mind, you could always attend one college for two years and then transfer to a better one if you get all As. Where you get your degree is from definitely is a selection factor for you as an applicant. Get serious and get As 👍
I thought I was the only one with strict parents who didn't allow me to have a life outside of school. I felt, more than anything, that my parents were the ones holding me back from getting into a good college
Congratulations to your new subscriber count; you deserve it :D I have such a burning question and I am not so sure if you answered it or not, and I also understand if you do not get around to it. I will be attending and undergrad college in a couple weeks as a freshie. I was wondering if you have seen any surgeons or doctors who are able to have enough free time for their hobbies. I want to pursue a medical career but I always feel discouraged because there are others I also want to do in life.
Physicians like everyone will make time for things that they love. A lot of them said that they have to have hobbies! Or else they'll just go insane. I feel the exact same way as you and I said this in my video "surgery vs FM" - I love medicine but I don't want it to be the only thing that I love.
hey! thanks for all your advice I had a few questions. my first one was I didnt understand by how the students can influence you being admitted to med school, you mentioned something about your roommate and their friends wrote letters of recommendations on your behalf can you elaborate more about that please? Also my second question/need advice: I am currently taking my prereqs for nursing to get my foot in the door in the medical field, becoming a doctor is what I really want to do, however I feel totally overwhelmed and lost at where to turn and what to do next, when to take my MCATs and what extra circular activities to do and what not. Is there any advice you can give on what to next or anything? Thanks Megan
Hi Megan. Medical school is nothing like undergraduate. The class sizes the smaller. My class size is 135. The doctors and administration get to know you pretty well. At my school, students have the option of giving an input on interviewees. (Interviews are all day consisting of - a tour, presentations, group actives, breakfast, lunch. It is a whole day ordeal. So many of the current students will have time to judge your character) Sure this does not weight heavily on your acceptance but it can prevent you from getting accepted if the current students do not like you. You can start by talking to your school. If there is a pre medical board / counselor. They can tell you your options. I am unsure of where to direct you because I do not know where you stand in your academic career. It's a good start just to keep your grades high and try to expose yourself to as much medicine as possible (volunteer at a hospital, shadow a doctor, nursing home, physical therapy, etc)
Hi! Great video! I was wondering what organization did you do the mission trips with? Also, how do you find doctors to shadow? I really want to get more shadowing experience but don't really know how. Thanks!
The mission trips were through: 1. Healing hearts across boarders 2. Project Vietnam You just have to be proactive about finding doctors to shadow. A lot of it is who you know - ask professors and friends if they know any doctors willing to allow students to shadow. If that doesn't work, google and call offices directly.
Can you do a video on Financial management? Currently i'm a high school student and i do volunteer work at my local hospital. I would love for tips in how to save my money up for my future!!!
Hey so I’m currently becoming an LMT and I found out that I really have a curiosity for stuff anatomically about the body and medical school popped in my head. And my question is how does becoming a doctor work with school, what do you have to major in or how do you get into med school? What are the levels of becoming a doctor or somewhere in that level ?
I can't even describe how much I appreciate your channel and outlook on medicine. I'm starting my junior year in two weeks and I feel so inspired to really step up my game! In undergrad how did you study for classes like physics and organic chemistry to really retain as much information as possible?
I loved organic chemistry but struggled in physics. I find that writing or drawing things out help me commit things to memory. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Go to office hours or ask TAs.
Study tips for a pre-med student please!
yes!!
omg i decided on med school at 28 and had to start from scratch, being an art major, there are many many pathways!
grubbymanz how is your path towards medicine going?
going well, currently at the end of my second year of med school, crunch time for shelf exams and prep for step 1. Other than now, has been a pretty low stress and interesting ride.
grubbymanz you were 28 when you applied to med school?
no, I was 28 when I decided to go into medicine, I started a post-bacc that year and I think applied at 30 after I finished.
I'm so glad you enjoy my videos. And good luck in your medical journey!
I really love what you said in another video that there's no such thing as being over-educated. I am in my final year in dentistry school and I'm applying to medical school next year. Watching this video, I got great tips so thanks!
Are you doing an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency? If not, why are you doing medical school after dental school?
That's awesome! I would love to hear what made you want to pursue medical school.
Thank you for your tips and videos ! I'm starting med school this year and you really inspire me !!
Congratulations!! Enjoy the summer while you still can! LOL
+Jenny Le Will do hahaha !
Hey! I just found your videos and I'm obsessed. You talked about choosing med school over pa school. Could you make a video about that? I would be so interested in hearing about that and I'm sure other people are too. I want to become a pa.
Can u make a video about your mission trips? I'm really interested in doing that, but have NO IDEA where to apply for one or look into it. Thanks!!
Check out Global Health Initiatives ☺️ I went on a health-oriented mission trip in rural Peru, and I LOVED it!
Jessica Carpenter thank you!!
I can totally relate to you because that's how my African parents are too lol😂😂
LOL did you move away for college too?
I am also AFRICAN AMERICAN and girrllll I am not allowed to do ANYTHING:'(
+Harty “Ida” Barty sameee
Lol I can relate. My nigerian parents expectations are surreal
Nigerian and Asian Parents have a lot more in common than people think. So similar!
I'm only in 8th grade. And I really want to be a pediatric nurse. I do okay in school (math is my weak spot.)
This was so helpful, thank you for the tips Jenny! Good luck with everything too
I love your video Jenny! I am a second year at UC Davis and I am definitely following these tips!
I needed this. Thanks a lot! I'm a med student in Moscow, Russia currently in my 5th year and I know that I'm not exercising my full potentials being here. Thank you so much for watching. I know several physicians who have come to practice in the states. I am unsure of their exact process but I believe they only have to pass the board exam and attend residency (3-5 years depending on speciality) instead of attending 4 years medical school again. I wish you the best of luck on your medical journey.
Thank you
I'm a high school student hoping to be a pediatrician! Love these videos❤️
Maryrose DiPiro me too!
Maryrose DiPiro same ❤️❤️
Thank you for this video, I've been following for quite awhile but never seen this video surprisingly.
+Yuridiana And you have plenty of time to figure that out. Don't forget to enjoy the journey!
Thanks :)
You should make a video for all your rotations like the ER one--it was really great! You're videos are really helpful. Thank you!!
I'm glad you enjoy them! Its hard to do all of them like the ER video due to HIPAA but I will definitely try!
I am a new grad RN. I am debating between pursuing a specialty in nursing or going to med school. Helpful tips/advice please.
Adrienne J Why not NP?
Watching your videos really make me feel excited to begin medical school this upcoming Fall :) PS You’re so pretty!
"If your personality sucks and if no one wants to be around you... then you're gonna have a hard time." LOL. Love you, Jenny!
MINH DAO!! love you too :)
Congratulations on your decision! This is the third video right now and I love how you really helped us understand every step. Best of wishes! You WILL be great! See you around!!!
Oh God I feel soooo identified with what happened when you got to be alone in college. Thanks for all the info
(whoo!)
I actually watched this twice bc I had to write down some of the good stuffs
I'm so glad you enjoyed!
Thanks so much for making this video! Its very inspiring/motivating. Im currently still in undergrad and I was contemplating taking a gap year, but I was so nervous that I would be making the wrong decision. But this totally gives me another perspective. The process can be so overwhelming!
I enjoy your videos so much!! Thanks for making them! Looking forward to the next one
I'm about to apply for medical school but in Mexico, it's interesting to now how the application process is made in the US.
I just found your channel and I love it!💜 you are a role model for me!🙆
Congratulations on 6,000 subscribers!! Your videos motivate me so much to keep pushing.
Yay! It makes me so happy to know that I can help 😁 if I can do it, you can do it!
Wow! I love this video of yours I grew up with Asian parents through and I m going through exactly what you went through and I just realized medicine is what I really wanna do! Thank you for this video it really helped motivate me that it's not too late
Thank you! :)
Hi Jenny, I recently discovered your channel and I want to say thank you so much for what you do! Your videos have been so helpful especially in understanding what medical school is really like. Thanks again! :)
you inspire me!
what made you decide against PA? I actually thinking of either being a doctor or being a PA so I think your insight would be helpful :)
Thanks! :)
you're welcome and best of luck!
Hello Jenny, I'm also a premed student and was hoping to get to know a little bit more on your trip to Vietnam.
Thanks for the video Jenny! I just have 2 questions: What did your MCAT look like and how high was your GPA?
Yay! thank you :)
You are so amazing, loved listening to your journey. You really instill motivation in me to say the least ! Thanks Jenny ! I know you are going to make an exceptional Doc 😊
Thank you so much :)
2. Two schools accepted me
3. 3.6 (granted I did have a dance minor so that boosted my GPA a bit)
You really inspire me. I want to be an OBGYN as well. I love your videos, you give lots of tips and good advice.
Thank you so much!
Thanks!!!
I loved your tips, and thank you for sharing your story! I will be going into the application process this cycle and I am really excited and nervous
so exciting!! I wish you luck :)
I am a single mom and 32 years old. I have not been able to focus on my education because I have to always work. I have decided to get it done now and I am thinking of PA first and then maybe DO. This was very inspiring. Thank you!!!
If your ultimate goal is DO, I would suggest going straight instead of doing PA first. There is no need.
Thank you Jenny.
girl, I call that being "lock down" and I can totally relate LOL (my parents are Ghanaian and I have a theory that 1st generation kids go through a lock down childhood)
omg I agree, but my parent are from El Salvador !!
After watching this video it really motivated me MORE to go towards the route of medicine!
One question, is it true that the first two years of medical school are the hardest?
The first two years of medical school is the suckiest. Lecture from 8-5 then an hour or two break for gym and dinner. Study till midnight. Then do it all over again. It is mentally and physically exhausting. But worth it!
I
Jenny Le wow lecture from 8-5, thats impressive. As an undergrad, what can I do to prepare myself so that the transition is not too hard?
sebastian cuello if you have worked hard to get into med school, I am sure you will be just fine when school start. Things will be a little tough in the beginning but you will soon get use to it.
Hi everyone! If you are interested in military medicine and having the military pay for your medical education, please feel free to check out my video where I break down my experience with the Health Professions Scholarship Program in full transparency.
DO's are outstanding physicians working in prestigious medical centers.
It is not a simple course but we will get through
what was your undergrad GPA if you don't mind me asking , I really want to go to med school but I'm at my junior year and have a 3.2 so I'm scared I'm just gonna waste my time applying and should just do PA.
Same lol could try DO
3.2 weighted?
That is so awesome!! I am very excited for you and I'm glad you enjoy the videos :)
Hey would you be able to do a video explaining how you funded your mission trips! I'm planning on travelling to Rwanda next summer for a medical mission trip but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to fund it!!
Can you explain more regarding your trips abroad and what exactly happened?
When I went to Vietnam, we set up clinics. There are different specialities - internal medicine, family medicine, cardiology, pediatrics, OBGYN, optometry, dentistry, and pharmacy. Depending on which speciality you work in that day, you do different things. In OBGYN I did PAP smears and LEEP procedures. All the others, I was a Jr doctor and got history and physical exam.
Hi Jenny! Thanks for being so inspiring and down to earth! May I ask which medical school you are attending? Was it hard to get accepted into many?
Thanks for the tips .Please make mooore videos i love ur videos ❤
Thank you :) Will definitely be making more videos.
What are you tips on how to find physicians to shadow? Can you shadow physicians when you're a volunteer at a hospital or clinic or do you have to be an undergrad in college?
You inspire me so much! I wish I can be like you. Good luck with med school. I think you'll be a really great doctor :)
Meredith Grey thank you so much!
for the record my med school doesn't let anyone who hosts interviewees have any say in their acceptance, but uses students to interview them otherwise.
What was your GPA?
Come on man let's keep it real we're trying to be surgeons out hea boi
kensta2468 pipe down Dr Ben Carson
holy shit that escalated quickly
Brandon - HAHAHA
3.78 mcat 504 ;)
I have a couple of questions for you:
+Jenny Le Cool, thank you so much!
hey jenny, thanks for making this video. what was the program you mentioned at 3:12?
(I have a cute height, in case you want to know hihi)
But hearing you while giving tips made me realize that i should really try to take medicine. I was really motivated by your advices. And thank you for that. keep it up! Continue to inspire others and me :) Godbless.
Do what you will not regret
Update
Hi! Thanks for sharing your story, Jenny. Did you ever consider a BS/MD program while you were in high school?
Yes I wanted to be a surgeon in high school.
omg I'm debating between pa and doctor too! love this!
I'm 37, about to start med school in July, wish me luck. At least my school's pretty low cost so I won't have much debt after graduating.
Good luck !!
Okay Thanks!
It’s funny I’m in pa school now but just thought I would watch this. See what’s different about the med school and pa application
Hey Jenny! I love watching your videos!
Did your school have an organization that helped you go on mission trips? Or did you plan those on your own?
Phi Delta Epsilon worked with Healing Hearts Across Borders - that trip was to Mexico. My mission trip to Vietnam, I googled myself and went through an organization called Project Vietnam.
Hi ! Can you go over what materials you used to study and how you managed time to study for the MCAT ? Did you solely dedicate to the MCAt or did you work / have class during it ? I'm trying to get into dental school and need to retake the DAT. But I also work full time. Any advice helps ! Thanks
For tip #4, can you explain some more?
Adore your videos, I'm only a senior in high school and applying to uni in February but I'm planning on pursuing medicine. I volunteer in a children's hospital and hospice centre and truly feel like it's my calling but sometimes it's hard to stay on track and remind myself why I'm doing what I'm doing, did you ever feel discouraged and like you couldn't do it? How did you overcome that id love to know as I still have a long road ahed of me haha thanks :)
P.s love your snap stories!
Hi, greetings from Slovakia!(not really visible state on map somewhere in the middle of Europe) 😊
I’m currently in my third year of medical school and aspiring to go to USA as IMG (if everything goes well).
But I hope you could do some videos about your background-moving for college or give some tips for IMGs if you have an idea what could help us for successful USMLE steps, electives-rotations-hands on experience and matching, maybe also moving abroad for pursuing medicine.
Another great topic would be case studies in a way “what I learned by practicing medicine”
Anyway.. thank you for the amazing content and inspiration! Bless you! 😊
great video! can you do a makeup tutorial of this look.
In the video, You mentioned about the trip to VietNam. I am quite interested in that. Can you tell me what was the program that you signed up in order to go there ?
Around what year did you start to do your mission trips? Or was it before you started college or pre-med
I really enjoyed your video! it was so helpful. I was wondering what were some study techniques that you used to study during your undergraduate?
I would read about the lecture topic before lecture. Take notes during lecture. And rewrite my notes right after lecture. This allowed me to go over the information multiple times. Then I would just go over my pretty notes a couple more times before the exam.
+Jenny Le Thank you so much :) I appreciate it!
I Can Relate So Much To The Strict Parent Thing. Loved The Video
thank you ! :)
Thank you for this video, Jenny!! 😊🙂
You are welcome! :)
Wow 5000 to 80K+!!!
*CONGRATS*
Good luck!
Thanks for your encouraging words. :)
I'm going to UCSD in 3 weeks (Revelle College too) and I want to be pre-med! So inspiring! :)
Congratulations!! So exciting
Hey! Quick question, I have also been debating between what career path I wanted to take, and have finally decided to pursue a medical career. Did you mention in your interview how you have been debating and you finally realized medicine is what you wanted to pursue? Think you can make a video on interviewing tips.
If you watch my "Sub Internship | Residency Interview" video, I leave tips in that video that is applicable to medical school interviews.
Get serious and get As 👍
Medical schools look at your application as a whole. An upward trend in your grade will definitely speak wonders on your behalf.
OMG I am a first year now at UCSD in Revelle as well! And I am also a pre med! :) Subscribed xD
yay! welcome :)
I thought I was the only one with strict parents who didn't allow me to have a life outside of school. I felt, more than anything, that my parents were the ones holding me back from getting into a good college
I felt the same way. But schools look at your application as a whole. I used my personal statement to explain why there were gaps in my application.
How did you get to do the mission trips? Pls answer
+EmLoves I made a whole separate video all about that. You can find it on my channel.
Hi love your video I am a nurse who is pre-med really enjoyed your video true inspiration
Fay' sBeautyShot Thank you for watching!
Yes I have watched that video :D It was very informative. Thank you for answering and I hope you decide on your specific practice soon.
hey! thanks for all your advice I had a few questions. my first one was I didnt understand by how the students can influence you being admitted to med school, you mentioned something about your roommate and their friends wrote letters of recommendations on your behalf can you elaborate more about that please?
It's a good start just to keep your grades high and try to expose yourself to as much medicine as possible (volunteer at a hospital, shadow a doctor, nursing home, physical therapy, etc)
ok thanks for the clarification love you channel!
Hi! Great video! I was wondering what organization did you do the mission trips with? Also, how do you find doctors to shadow? I really want to get more shadowing experience but don't really know how. Thanks!
The mission trips were through:
1. Healing hearts across boarders
2. Project Vietnam
You just have to be proactive about finding doctors to shadow.
