It's not the character from one piece
Taşak means testis in turkish. And propably this word passed to greek. A few centuries ago.😅

@@moseskfrostthey have the same etymology: gyros (γύρος), means "lap", as in "going around a full 360°" (the way γύρος does when it's prepared & the way a γυροσκόπειο is allowed to move).

As an American I'm embarrassed
🇺🇸🦅🆓💯✊
You shouldn't have to be embarrassed. People who get pissed off when you mispronounce words from a language you don't speak can eat a bag of cocks. If you understand what they meant, it's not the end of the world. I'm a native English speaker living in a french speaking area and when my French speaking friends speak English to me, I don't make a big deal out of a mispronounciation. I only correct them if I can't understand them.
Lol, you don’t fit in anywhere. You try and culturally appropriate everyone but make yourselves look like tools doing it
We forgive you my friend is not your fault there are no letters in English that accurately depict gamma lol
I am Greek and i got emotionally damaged 😂😂😂
The tasiki part had me 😂
As a Greek i had a stroke watching this
We once heard 'σπανακόπιτα' pronounced like spanaka-PIGHTER (rhyming with the New York pronunciation of 'fighter' at the end). My Greek wife's left eye started twitching like she was about to have a stroke.
She must be second generation Greek in the States. That's why she didnt have a stroke, first gen can't avoid it.
😢bro ikr spanakpieter

I’m Swedish, but even I wonder how tf you manage to pronounce ”σπανακόπιτα” (”spanakópita”) as ”spanaka-pighter”. 😂

I'm not Greek, but I'm a grecophile studying the language and dream of traveling to Greece someday. My almost 80 yo very American roommate decided she wanted to learn Greek, too, and is having an insanely hard time with pronunciation/hearing. Still, I'm impressed she hasn't quit yet! Those γάμμαs and χιs, though.
That's so awesome! I'm a Greek person and I'm really happy to learn that someone is so interested in our language and culture :)
The pronunciation can be tricky! We definitely don't blame you for having a hard time with sounds that are different from English! Mostly we're impressed when people take the time to learn when they visit!

I’m an American living in Greece. This is exactly my experience. Thankfully Greeks are patient people with a good sense of humor. There have been attempts to teach me a Greek phrase. I have simply replied, “I have no idea how to say that with my own mouth” 😂😂

I have been corrected like this years ago. I went to order a sandwich at a lunch wagon run by a Greek couple. The wife told me that same thing. The husband concurred. They were generous and wonderful people.

I’m half village-Spartan Greek and my Greek family simply believes: “ speak the American pronunciation if* you want to live in America” very simple and no constant issue 😂❤😅

I was flying on my gyrocopter, using my gyrocompass to navigate to Greede and I landed in order to eat some gyros.
I don't correct people about this because "gyro" the way he's pronouncing it is the standard anglicization of γύρο, so it is correct for an English speaker to pronounce it that way. That is how the same morpheme is pronounced in other English words (cf "gyroscope", "gyromagnetic", etc), so why is the food the one case where people have to preserve the Greek pronounciation? Anglos can't even make the γ sound anyway, so they need to change the pronounciation. This would be like correcting a Greek when they say, idk, William as Υουίλιαμ. Or going to Japan and complaining every time they say, idk, ice cream as "aisu kurimu" because "it's pronounced ice cream!!!"
I know someone is gonna be like "it's not that deep", but let me die on this hill. Let the anglos say gyro.
Oh yes, cause if I want to go to New York for example I'll ask a New Yorker to tell me about Nèa Iòrki and not only he ll understand me but will not automatically correct me(and I put an easy one here dont let me mention "Lonthino" to an English Gentleman and not anticipating a Pikachu face...)!!!Rrrrriiighhhtttt!!!
You practically "amputating" the original words out of convenient laziness and its a mistake addressing it??
So you'll get the memo, "Yeeros" literally means "round" in my language and this food called like from the way its cooked (the meat places cylindrical around a metal stick -souvla-that spins slowly the meat around to roast it) . Now " Gyros " means a totally different thing ( the profit -money- that a business makes). Do you get the difference ?? Sounds strange, cringey and automatically annoying to our ears!
Did you ever heard "Greeklish"???
I bet you ll want to rip your ears apart too...!!😂😂
