    The way you opened up the alcohol conversation was inspiring. Drinking doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It’s so refreshing to see a “normal” person talking about drinking too much sometimes in a way that most people experience at some time.

    I love how you address the class questions, I'd really enjoy more conversation around that if you ever do feel like doing a video on in.
    I come from a working class background, and you're so right about how it's more than wealth. It bothers we when I try to address that with middle class friends and they try arguing "actually my parents have struggled with money at times" because to quote my mum... Youve got to have money to struggle with it 😂

      agreed! I am very aware of my privilege as an extremely middle class white girl but I have always felt like I identify more with a lot of aspects of being working class than upper and the discussion of the different aspects of class here has made me realise that that probably has a huge amount to do with where I grew up and went to school (a fairly underprivileged area) and that both of my parents were working class for much of their lives

    The discourse around not needing to be a part of every discussion and share evey opinion Is so true. I am guilty of this 100%, and i'm trying to be better in my private life and on Instagram. But i also think we should stop pressuring creators to speak on every single issue, it's important that they do speak on big issues, but there Is a limit.

The conversation is soooo nuanced and there's so many ways to look at it, and like you said it can be very sensitive. But it's so much better to be authentic than say 'we were comfortable' when really their parents were loaded and they were very privileged

    I hope that Lucy reads this especially- apologies that it is quite wordy:
    I just wanted to say that I respect your answer to the assumption(s) about class. As someone who is working class (being the first in my family to go to uni, growing up on a council estate etc.) I find it SO frustrating when people that have gone to private school etc. say in these types of videos ‘oh no my family wasn’t wealthy/rich, we were just comfortable”. I think your answer instead was very honest and nuanced. As a working class woman I get very defensive when more middle class people don’t own their privilege, and when you said ‘class is a very touchy subject’ I ironically DID feel very defensive!! You’re 100% right, and despite being a viewer/fan for years, as soon as I heard the assumption, I immediately noted your accent and assumed your response. Despite never usually judging your accent otherwise. I have noticed recently I have an unconscious bias towards more ‘middle class’ people as I am resentful of the implied privilege, which is something I am working on as I move into a more diverse workplace outside of the entirely working class background I grew up in. So yeah, thank you for the honest, open response. I just wanted to say it is appreciated and I liked the aspects of class you mentioned that I hadn’t thought of before!

    I think that there is so much privilege in attending grammar school that people don’t realise. I grew up in South Wales and went to a school that almost got closed it was doing so badly. I would have killed to go to a grammar school but there was just none in my area. I had to work so hard to even access some materials for my A-Levels. To me and a lot of people around me, grammar school is really not that different to private school in terms of privilege.

    • @Scarlett-nu8gh
      @Scarlett-nu8gh 2 года назад +2

      I grew up in a small town, low socioeconomic growth, low rates of going to uni etc. We had one secondary school in the town and a grammar school in the next town along. No one I know could afford private school, that's a mad level of wealth to me. However some people in my primary school could afford tutoring and got into the grammar school, and some were able to do so without tutoring. I agree with you but think the level of wealth needed for private schooling vs the situational privilege needed for grammar schooling are two very different things!

    The disappointed labour voter bit of the video very much resonated with me. Rashford is a more effective opposition figure to the Tory government than Keir Starmer is, and at the moment the party seem to think that returning to the slogans and values of Blair will win them an election, which I think will only lead to disaster.

    Completely agree with you Lucy on the need to reform social care! It's something I believe so passionately about as I grew up as a young carer, but I don't think gets talked about in political spaces with much substance, alongside general rights and wellbeing for disabled people. The Women's Equality Party is doing a huge push for an inquiry into the treatment of disabled people during the pandemic and they are the only party that I have seen advocating for disabled people with any urgency. It has actually made me so much more inclined to consider a small party when usually I would vote labour (but am now generally more of a floating left-wing voter due to general disappointment as you say). But I'd be interested in hearing you talk about this subject more :)

I guess this is why I never wanted to "sell my soul" to YT in the past bcs I felt like I would be going towards a person I did not want to become, someone who just does things bcs of others' approval.

    a lot of people reallyy play up the distinction between private schools and grammar schools and i think there’s still something a little defensive in saying ‘i didn’t go to private school!1!’ without examining the privilege in the combination of affluence + grammar school? obviously many differences, can get working class people in private schools on bursaries as one example but grammar schools really require more unpicking imo and their false association with meritocracy and social mobility etc. (this isn’t meant to be a critique as much as a comment and glad people are talking about this)

He was smoking since he was 13, like 3 packs a day, and one day at age 65 he just woke up and told himself he's done with it and never smoked another stick in his life ever again. I guess it all boils down to motivation and discipline, which you obviously both lack at the moment.

      That's nonsense. Starts smoking at 13 3 pacs a day and lives till 65 then next stops. Doesn't make sense. By that age if he did manage to survive all the toxic nicotine would not clear in his system and literally non possible to stop. I heard doctors telling people you're better off continue smoking as is too late and will make it worse to stop. Your 3 pacs a day since 13 story doesn't really add up. Sorry.
