  • Welcome back to another Dragon December video: A series where I'll be drawing a monster from Dungeons and Dragons while I talk about it's lore, history in the real world and what they're like to use as a DM or fight as a player.
    In this video, I talk about Kurtulmak; The god of Kobolds!

    He's tremendous. I also have a deep love of using kobolds in my game. My players recently struggled to fight just six of these guys - a six vs. six fight - and I was really proud of how the little sods managed to completely ruin their day by being tricksy and using tactics, terrain and traps, even to the point of using the party's 'tactics' (they don't normally have any really, they tend to just pile in and hit the baddies with sharp and pointy objects - this fight forced them to be a bit more thoughtful, mostly out of fear because the tide of the battle turned against them rather quickly) against them to really pile on some pressure. Considering how weak Kobolds are, and how (in comparison) strong the players were, it was borderline unfair and made me feel like a tactical genius (which I'm not, not at all).
    They were only able to force a relatively quick win due to the Warlock and his judicious use of Hellish rebuke and his willingness to put himself in a disadvantageous position to bait the kobolds, coupled with some clutch spells from the bard and some self-sacrifice from the barbarian. Considering the 'on paper' disparity between the power of the two groups, it was actually a much more epic and nail-biting battle than some of the others they've had against much more dangerous enemies. Kobolds really are a lot of fun to use and showcase that, with a bit of preparation and thought, you don't have to put the party up against a beholder to really turn the screw and make them sweat!
    I love this guy - the stars and nebulae-like effects are really cool, as I've said on other videos. Nailed it, boss! Thank you for doing this for us!
    Hope you feel better, had a great Christmas and I wish you a happy new year, too!

    This has got to be one of my favorite of your incredible drawings, I love the pose and the draped cloth! Plus you just can't beat the charm of kobolds.

    Nice, I really like the clothing for this guy.
    In my world Kurtalmak was created when both Bahamut and Tiamat shed their scales and in turn the Kobolds and Wyvarans(A player race/species that I borrowed from Pathfinder 1E) where created after Kurtulmak shed his scales. Unlike in the official lore Kobold also have an intense dislike/hatred of Goblins, who are close relative of Gnomes.

    On top of the fantastic information you gave us, i also have to say that this is one of my favourite illustrations you've done so far!

    I know it’s been a while since I left a comment but I wanted to tell you about what’s been happening with my D&D life. Also about my D&D character. My dungeon master asked me why I picked a dragonborn dhampire barbarian and I told her that I had been wanting my character to be a dhampire but I wasn’t sure what race. But after watching your dragonborn vid for the 8th time that was it ( I also took a long look at many other race but nope). And to make it official I’m drawing him on my iPad. I’m still working on his name and I’ve got pretty much an idea for his backstory, his motivations and curse/how did he became a dhampire. When I’m done with him I would love to show him to you 🙂 and see what you think. Sorry I should have put this on you’re Dragonborn vid but this is a dragon vid so it works… kind of 🤷‍♂️. This one is one of my favorite videos. Keep up the amazing work 😁

    Still going to recommend the mishipeshu.
    Sleek green kobold in furs is surprisingly well suited to this deity. Though maybe gnomish leather would have also worked... maybe the fur is actually gnome scalps?

      Good ol' Mishpish; I hope they come up for you! Euuugghhhh Gnomish leather! Brilliant and gross idea! I love it! Thans so much for watching!

      @@ArcaneForge Not a problem. Always a good watch. Did start thinking after making that comment that it could be a fun idea for players, or the DM too, to figure out what things are made of.
      You're wearing "leather armor" but is it normal cow leather, elephant hide, human, manta/stingray skin, shark, beholder skin, minotaur, phase beast, artificial plant leather? Especially if they have magical effects, maybe the effect is from a creature with the same ability.
      Like yeah the Feurio sword is cool and all with its flame burst and silvery blade, but what if you found out the ruby embedded in It's hilt was an elementals heart or something similar?

    I was really surprised when you had said the name is originally Turkish. Just for a tip when pronouncing his name as a Turkish person it’s not turtle with a K.
    It’s kinda like saying curd or cuckoo.
    Cur-til-muk.
    Great video and happy holidays

      @@ArcaneForge No problem 😁 Quick question if you don’t mind.
      What brushes do you use and how do you change your outline color? I’ve been wondering how you get the line art to match the color nearest to it.

    I subscribed for your art, but love the stories that accompany it. I have always wanted to try out digital art, what do you use?(program and hardware wise, and mouse or digital drawing pad?) These look amazing and somewhat intuitive, but maybe thats just your skill making it look second nature haha

    • @ArcaneForge
      @ArcaneForge  2 года назад

      Thank you so much! That's so kind of you; both for subscribing and for your very generous compliments. So I use Photoshop CC (because I am fully subservient to Adobe apparently), and I use a Wacom intuos pro tablet.
      I've been drawing since I was very very young, but I'm self-taught so maybe a part of what you like is intuition at this point? Either way, thanks so much and I hope this helps!

    I always love a good Cruella Deville furcoat. 😉
    Although, I hear no music? Creative choice?

    • @ArcaneForge
      @ArcaneForge  2 года назад +1

      Haha! I'd not thought of Cruella, but now the idea of inspiring Kurtulmak by her is too tempting to pass up!
      You have a good ear! It wasn't a creative choice unfortunately. The video and audio for all of the Dragon December videos were done by Evonne this year. She's going to be taking on that role for me in future and she was still learning how I like things as well as the editing software, so there's a bit of a learning curve. Hopefully all the kinks in the process will be ironed out by February!
