I like the idea of Paladin Oaths and scriptures of their deities getting inscribed in the body as they continue to serve and use their holy powers. And if a paladin becomes am oathbreaker after decades of service, they become disfigured as the skin covered in text literally catches fire, gets torn off or whatever method of erasure the deity prefers.
I really enjoy this trope. In my current campaign, there is one player character who is notorious for being scarred via magic. He uses an a substance that is similar to Ruidium from Call of The Netherdeep. The first time he used it, his arm was covered in burns and they formed a pattern that resembled eyes. The second time, he ATE the substance. I described how that majorly buffed his spellcasting until he passed out. 6 months later, he awakes in a random cafe and a new body. He encounter strangers who claim that they met during the 6 month gap. They imply that he worked alongside the BBEG during the gap but he recently terminated their partnership.
with reading some the older d&d books i've liked how they describe how different magic effects the sense. illusion spells feeling oily or greasy. psionics a white misty like halo, bells ringing, and bright flashes of color. shaking hands from meta magic or arcane fissures. using fire spells heat up skin and even turn it red or burn it. white etching vains for lighting. just to name a few

@@ArcaneForge the books aren't player books they are paperbacks readers. but there is channel on RUclips black rat inn. it has them in audio book form. takes up a bit of time cause there are so many but alot of great stuff.

the crazy think about this concept is that an old wizard looks less like a simple old man and more like a walking tapestry of arcane might, you know when people said they want their spells written on their skins, I don't think this is what they meant XD
I love the ideas you have listed and illustrated! For force damage, I always interpret it as some degree of disintegration, which can be hard to illustrate. Maybe someone struck by Eldritch Blast or Magic Missile will have this radial series of smooth scar tissue where the flesh was literally torn apart. Like it was ruptured from the inside where the magic has infiltrated. Necrotic damage I like to imagine in various ways depending on the source. Maybe it leaves blackened flesh where the character has decreased sensation, or it looks pallid, aged and withered.
I really love this video and the examples you described! I think if I was going to introduce the concept to players it would be something like an effect of the consequences of using magic, especially in the case of warlocks and clerics, that goes against the wishes of the source of your power. Magic is gifted to warlocks and clerics so crisis of faith or rebellion can be hard to deal with. I think this could be an interesting way of letting your players still participate while also not ignoring that there is a rift between their beliefs and their magic. Another thought that occurred to me while watching is this effect being a backlash from casting spells not within your abilities. Things like spell scrolls, magical items, and weapons with spells that aren't within your study/belief/nature. I like it as an idea of this is magic you aren't versatile in and so you don't have the knowledge or ability to control it. Maybe even going as far as having them roll to see the toll the spell takes on them which can make using these items a risk rather than just a tool. Oops, I can already tell I'm going to be thinking about this nonstop! Thank you for this video and giving me something to think about and play with!
This made me think of one of my character, thank you for the idea, awesome video. The one character that I'm thinking of, is a rogue hexblade and now that I think about it, I was thinking, since his patron is a serpent, to have his weapon hand (right) to grow fangs from 3 of his fingers, and have it look alien like serpent mark on his palm, because of overuse of eldritch smite and soon the accursed specter

Splendid stuff. I used to describe the player’s spells going off all the time, I should get back to doing that. I love these suggestions! I actually have a pact of (the undead? Can’t remember the exact term right now) warlock in my game, and I’ve actually put him in a WhatsApp group… he gets little comments when he casts spells! 😂

This is another reason I love your videos Jess, the spell scars from Being affected by spells seemes like the natural course of action, and similarly I've also always loved the world building of FMA brotherhood as well so magic having some kind of blowback on the caster makes so much sense and I can definitely see this having ramifications in certain campaign worlds, a world where casting spells leaves marks would make it hard for a spell caster to hide the fact they use magic, crap now I have this whole anti magic inquisition world plot line going on in this part of the world.

I like the concept it could cause trust stigmas like of the person is too good looking etc. Is it natural or super natural? Or like in skyrim necromancy causes people to think you're sick or was that Vampirism only. Been a while.
In skyrim that was definitely vampirism dude I love that idea too, it would make the world feel so real, especially In an area where magic is generally distrusted, people who bear the mark of a mage would have a noticeably harder time than an regular person
