Now Interior Minister, Eli Yishai, wants to solve this by deporting the children of foreign workers. Councillor Binyamin Babayoff supports deportation. "They must leave with their families", he says; "being born here does not give one the right to stay". The decision has courted controversy across the population. Rotem Ilan set up a campaign to fight the deportations. "It's not just a phrase to say that they are Israeli children - that's the reality", he argues. Rotem believes that the values of his country are now at stake. To him it is a moral matter, believing Israel should have,"big enough heart and space to let these 1200 children stay and grow".

These work immigrants came under the strict condition that they stay in Israel for a limited time with their work visa. They agreed to those conditions. They knew in advance that they and any children they birth during their stay will get deported. The state of Israel cannot afford to set a legal precedent on the basis of compassion, because many around the world will gladly take advantage of it to gain a permanent status in Israel instead of going the legal route to attain citizenship.

The majority of the comment section is very uneducated about this but let me explain, if u move to country with a work permit that lasts for a couple years you aren't a citizen, the children born there aren't either. The Israeli citizens pay taxes, work and those taxes go off to these people who avoid much of it. Law is law, the work permit is finished, go back to ur country or apply to citizenship. I live in Israel and my neighbors are full citizens from India on one side and Ethiopia on the other. Don't fall for half stories.

If two Israeli citizens go to the Philippines and have a child there, the child will not be a Filipino and cannot just stay there. One of the parents must be a Filipino citizen. No matter how well the child speaks Filipino and no matter how Filipino s/he feels inside, the law is the law.
