- I've been working on a little project for the last few weeks and finally got a chance to get into the water and test it out. Not the best results but still pretty good considering the price. Gonna get back to the drawing board and see what I can do about that increasing the thrust and building a more stable arm to support the motor.
When I have it running the way I want it I'll post details and prices for all the parts I used.
Nice! This is exactly what I needed to see! Imagine having two of those come down to thrust assist two existing trolling motors. This is good work my friend.

Any progress? I have been searching for a 48V system to work with a battery I already bought for another project.. Brushless as well. Any advice is much appreciated
Have you tried two motors, one on each end of a pvc right angle you can hold instead of a paddle. You can put buttons for each hand for directional control like a tank?

Was the rigidy and torsion good on the mount to the lower unit? Any movement inmaterial, mounting ponts or hinge mechanism. Is that stainless?
A little movement but not enough to matter. Definitely needed more thrust to get the speed I wanted.
Howdy mate, have you considered using rc underwater jet thrusters as the engine? I’m considering setting up my kayak with one and some are crazy fast, this one guy even made a surfboard with two working in tandem and he was flying around his lake at some awesome speeds.
I was looking into thrusters but don't know much about them. Know of any suppliers in China? Keen to check them out.
@@MadSaffer Best ones I've seen are the ones from this gentleman, Mark, that makes and sells by himself. He's got a sweet channel with his email on some videos, I sent him one a few days ago and he hasn't got back yet but its still recent.

Let me know if you find any others I haven't found any other jet thrusters over 60mm anywhere else with this kind of exposure and proof of functionality.

I found it worth it for my own experience but if I had to do it again I would definitely go with more thrust although, after comparing with some other options I've found the most cost effective solution is a low cost 4-stroke outboard motor....we call them weed wackers. They have the right torque (1.5HP is around 60LBS of thrust) and can be mounted to the side of the yak or the back as a replacement for the rudder. Lighter too as you don't need a battery. On the down side, they noisy but, if you don't mind the noise when you travelling, this is a good option.
So what motor did you use? And how much did it cost?
I used a 3 - 5kg underwater thruster. They originally made for ROV's but given the thrust I was pretty certain it would work on the yak. Unfortunately not as well as I'd hoped. To get the 6 to 10km speed I reckon I need at least 9kg of thrust. They pretty cheap, I got mine from AliXpress at around $40 NZD per thruster. You still need an ESC to power it though and they go for around $17 NZD.
