  • 'Sculpting The President' is brief glimpse of life size portrait sculpting in action - the final stage of completing the life-size Sculpture Portrait of President Obama in clay. The Bulgarian born American Artist opens the door to her studio and shares her latest sculpture work - a Portrait of The President . While not intended entirely as a technical sculpture lesson, the video shows some of the final touches, from the completion work on the Portrait as well as some interesting techniques. The Artist walks us through the process of sculpting a powerful political figure and gives us a brief glance in her inner insight of the process, revealing also her versatility as an Artist.This Portrait is a brand new work by Tsvetana Yvanova, just completed a few weeks ago and has not been published . This is the very first time it has been shown to the public.
    The Materials: Chavant clay, Non-sulphur formula, soft density.
    The Foundation: Polyurethane foam, reinfornced with metal armature.
    Protective Seal: Rustoleum Oil Based spray coat.
    The Tools: Standard carving tools for all stages - including fine dental steel tools.
    The Length of Completion - approximately 5 weeks.
    The 5 min video is shot on Canon Vixia HR100.

    LegoMaster- you are quite observant . Of course proportions are the leading element. Details give the emotion. Don't forget, the President is a human bring, that changes like all of us. Before the economic worries began, he was clearly not as thin as now. I used dated references- around his inauguration . He was a little bit heavier at the time. Plus , I took into consideration the potential changes that will occur after casting of the wax- it shrinks in every direction, especially the narro

    The clay is medium softness CHAVANT oil clay, nonsulfur. It is very smooth, can be plastered and carved - and when completed can stay as long as needed without drying. I have used as well CLASSIC CLAY- equally good.

    How does one decide.. "Hmmm, I want to be a sculptor!"

    I guess one doesn't really decide, they just "go with the flow" and it leads them here..

    shelllumus- I have noticed that some clays ( Logically the sifter type) if you leave the piece longer, before cast- even if you have a surface super smooth - I does not come out that way after casting.

  • @StyleViewStudio
    @StyleViewStudio  12 лет назад

    Hahaha! yes - I think you are right! However - I was not trying to make a replica of the president - just a sculpture, that reflects his character, his demeanor, his presence as a leader. Depicting a mole is totally irrelevant to my goal ...To answer your question -( no, you are not going crazy) - he does have a mole or two... You are very observant!! Thanks for your comment!

  • @StyleViewStudio
    @StyleViewStudio  10 лет назад

    ...the hair.... Yes. Since sculpture represents everything in form rather than color- I do kit have to change the hair....:) back TOU your question. The 'how'- I used a tool I made myself from wood . That I used.. It did take some figuring out how to proceed.... But it worked! Surface treatments are important since they are the only method I e can create the notion of color , apart from the hot patina. Thanks fir your question....:)

    @BRUTUALTRUTH Thank you for your comment. However- an Artists is judged by the merit of their work, not by the way they look, you agree? In sculpture - when we look for subjects, we look for character - not for beauty. And the answer is - yes, I have done a study for portrait of myself. It is here in the Channel under STUDY FOR PORTRAIT - you can view it on my channel.Thanks for watching!

    @euodeio3 Thank you for kind comment - but I have to admit -you stand corrected. There are incredibly talented sculptors-a lot of established and a lot of young ones.It may be that their subject matter or the portrayal of women that you disagree-I know I do.And yes- there are less women sculptors than men. Reason being it does require qualities,considered by society very masculine and demanding - strong rational thinking,physical strength as well, not only talent and education ....

    1964csiLva: Some people confuse Art with bigotry or politics. Art is none of these. Yet - ART has the unusual quality to provoke in people their own values - no matter how high or how low they may be. Art makes you ask questions . Ask yourself: WHY AM I DRAWN TO THIS IMAGE? Why does it irritate me? Or why do I like it? You have the answer - I do not. Good luck in your self discovery! The role of Art is to make us better understand our world and appreciate it more- and become better in this

    @dan31366 All together, without considering the research and preparation time - approximately 20 -25 actual days - a few hours a day.Some days are more productive than others. When you have to redo major sections-time does not matter.Only the result matters.Especially when you want to make the sculpture ready to talk. Yet - you must set some time frame goals of completing one perfect piece. It is also good to give yourself extra time for major corrections....:)

    @daboognish88 I am sorry if this disappoints you, Sir - but I do not do political art. My privilege as an Artist is to chose my subjects. And political art is very temporary, since it only appeals to a certain segment of the population, who may - or may not fully believe in their cause and always have an 'agenda'. I sculpted a historical figure - whom I value very highly. I stand by my choice - and will not apologize for it. Thank you for your comment.

    @2hatelibs -because he is one of the most intelligent and educated Presidents we have ever had . I was hoping to portray the human being behind the political figure. An Artist should not be politically biased. I did portray Mr. Obama as a person with the human qualities, people are blind for, because of politics or color. Put your creativity to work- give yourself the time to practice techniques, study human bone structure and anatomy, if you are going to venture in figurative or portraiture. It is very, very, very rewarding! Try not to expect miracles in the beginning- just try to improve what you don't like, instead of being overly critical to your work. Just work, learn and always try to make it better! I absolutely love i

    Yes - you have to use different tools - that are sharper- and have finer edge. Because oil clay has qualities not to be ignored...!

I looked and these along with a book about sculpture techniques "Encyclopedia of Sculpture Techniques" by John W. Mills will give you a good start. But these are in English . You can copy the titles and paste on Amazon - it will give you the resources to buy in Europe. :)

    • @StyleViewStudio
      @StyleViewStudio  7 лет назад

      Pipli Mukhopadhyay This was challenging.But is is about the proportions rather than the measurements.
      You gather sources of his real life height. Then gather a few pictures . A LOT. I watched tons of videos as well.
      Then I knew I want to cast it in bronze. During this process - there will be a shrinkage of at least 3-5%.
      So u used conventional statistics for a normal male face, added extra % in size and defined the external dimensions.
      I then drew the profile and the position of the head literally on a graded paper . That was my blue print to start.
      Once you have constructed proportionate head - larger fir carving - then the real artistic process begins.

    @a500603497384 Thank you for good words and Holiday wishes! I knew that this video may provoke some adversity. By the way - Brandon Tart - I just noticed - you need to brush up your general music knowledge ... The music is Four Seasons by Vivaldi - not the Moonlight Sonata. And it will be impossible to use classical music for anything of your own - since you must look for sounds with a little confused and angry content (Stravinsky perhaps?!?) Composers with harmony will not suit your attitude ...
