Manual Transmission Rebuild Jeep Wrangler / Peugeot
Brian has a wonderful folksy presentation and is a natural born teacher. He explains stuff at an earthy level most people can understand.
I just rebuilt my first manual Brian, a Toyota G52. What an incredible learning experience. I am light years ahead of where I started just 3 weeks ago. It took me two tries to get it right because of my ignorance but now it's perfect and feels like new.
Keep up the good work.
That's AWESOME! You're the man!
I DO appreciate your support and compliments. Eric is an awesome mechanic and a friend of mine. As for fairness, he puts a lot more work in the craft of video making and promotion than I do. We'll do a series, but at the moment we've been too over-obligated. He's on vacation right now and I've got some family stuff going on as well. Again, I can't thank you enough for your support. I DO appreciate it!
I own a 1988 YJ and I would say Im in love with it just like the guy that owns the one your working on. When I first got it, it had the peugeot ba10 and they were known for their problems I have sense upgraded to the ax15 out of a 91. Im now in the middle of changing out my amc 258 4.2L carb engine for a 94 amc 242 4.0L EFI.
Peugeot doesn't always suck at what they do, you have to admit their Pikes Peak car is pretty awesome
YOU rock- thanks for liking the videos and being a part of the channel!
Thanks for making this video man, I was always told these are pretty simple units but limited in strength. To me it looks like alot of the problems were caused by previous rebuilder.
That's the benefit of a Snap On boxed end wrench. The stronger alloy allows for thinner walls.
I was lost for a while on this one. Again, it pays to have smart friends that have your back! I think that the first time this one went under the wrench it was due to lube loss. It looked like the bearings were spun and then replaced. Fortunately all the synchros were like new as well. They're tough to come by and spendy too.
Subscribed...just after showing and explaining how you loosen the bolts in tight places. Obviously you're someone with deeper thought, insight, and experience. Cheers.
When you die and go to a place where the French are the cooks, the English are the police, and the Germans are the engineers, you're in good shape. If you awaken to a land where English are the cooks, the Germans are the police, and the French are the engineers, well you might be in for a bad day. ;)
ha ha ha ha ha ha, oh my oh my goodness. sometimes the comments can be truly amazing
One thing I've found works well for the stuck bolts is candle wax, after you heat them up hold the candle against the bolt as it cools, it will suck the wax into the threads.
I've heard that, but I've never tried it. I'm anxious to try it some time. I've really had some doosies! I wonder if it would work on a stuck CV axle in a hub too?
My professor told us to heat it up and knock on it with a hammer or mallet. If it doesnt give, youre fucked for the day lol
Interesting idea
Hey Brian you ever think of doing sports commentary? You would probably be good at it. Anyways as far as the video I learned that transmissions are complicated pieces of machinery. Your videos have been really good lately, shake it easy.
A friend of mine blew up two manual transmissions in his Peugeot 306 and used parts from both to make a "good" one. Another friend had a bearing failiure in his Citroen Saxo (same transmission) the day he put it up for sale. Basicly we don't think of Peugeot very highly.
Does anyone?
@@xmo552 Since the first comment I've owned a Peugeot engined LDV 400 with over 260,000 miles on the clock and despite my best efforts it didn't blow up. Does this mean I have to respect Peugeot now?
@@GuernseyDayne
Maybe they're not all bad, but I would appreciate the blessings.
"Whole lot of wobble going on here" that was funny Brian
you made understanding how a gearbox works look really easy
A failed Peugeot 5spd is why my 87 XJ got an AW4 swap. I would have prefered the stick, but it did what I wanted too and then some with an Auto. Nice video and very informative.
Thanks Brian! Don't know if I'll ever tackle the inside of a transmission, but if i do, your video(s) will be a great help.
New software has a mind of it's own. It takes a lot of baby sitting and settings checking.
I would recommend using a heat wrench- the kind with a red and green hose on it. Heat is your best option there. Of course do it in a well ventilated area and away from other flammables etc.
and what are you going to do when the planet is dead (should you survive), necessity is the Mother of Invention
Over time I amassed a bunch of misc sockets. I took some common sizes, cut them down on a friends lathe so they'll barely reach over bolt heads, and diminished their wall thickness. (wasn't easy to do they're tough) They're great in tight clearance areas!
They must be deep broached to begin with, and aren't strong enough to break things loose.
One great application is timing belt cover bolts, Along with a long Mac 90° bevel gear carb adjust tool I have, they're easily reached & run in or out.
As I mentioned in the video this is a French import. It's pretty different. You find them in late 80's Chrysler stuff.
I wish you and Eric The Car Guy could do a video series together! That would be epic!
"Poo-joe" haha that sounds really funny
Brian, I am very happy you are editing your videos now. I have been a fan for awhile, but honestly, I stopped watching your videos for a long time because they just weren't pleasant to watch (editing wise! The content was great!) Keep up the good work!
Cannot believe someone Disliked this Video... Some people just don't Appreciate good work. Thumbs up Brian.!!!
Not enough dry humor, great explanation
i understand there are differences between the 87 version and 88 version of this transmission. I am about to try this myself and doing some research on the job. Thanks for the video, great job
brian why not use a two nut method on those studs
Brian, I have a 1990 YJ Jeep Wrangler with a AX15 Transmission. It's doing weird stuff. If you put it into first, you can hear it clicking if you're moving with the clutch pushed in. and second will either sometimes grind, go in perfect, or not let you go in at all. 3rd and above are fine.
CJ Armour sounds a bit like the synchro is acting up on 2nd gear. My parents have owned MANY different Alfa Romeo's and some of the older ones were plagued with a 2nd gear synchro that had a tendency to go bad. This sounds exactly like what happened
Ask your self why 2nd gear synchro would go bad ?
Almost first! Your voice got super low around 8min but then recovered LIKE A BOSS.
ETCG and Brian are both very good at what they do. Sure they might approach things differently but the end result is normaly always good.
Another helpful bunch of info. THANKS. At the end, perhaps you meant to say PACERS and Peugeots? But I take your point. I lived with a Renault LeCar for way too many years and it never failed to underwhelm with its French engineering.
No, the "Pinto" was recalled due to the fuel tank being in the rear, getting rear-ended killed folks
Heat the bolts with a propane torch then apply candle wax. The capillary action will draw the wax into the threads, lubricating them.
Of course. Good thinking. I planned on making some if needed. Again, the budget wasn't there for that.
Awesome video! Hey a koo trick to take those bolts out? is to get two nuts to take a bolt out. Use tha first nut to loosen the bolt; after you tighten those two bolts together. But your method is koo too!
u 2 koo
your floor looks awesome
It was in the clip I was cutting from- couldn't help throwing it in there. Sometimes I miss her smiling face.
Hey Brian, another great video. I thought it might be cool to share a 3D video I found. It’s a Man-Tran animation, but because it’s just a model it’s like X-ray glasses to see the Transmission while in operation. the name of the Video is “Transmission Animation”, and the RUclips name is “SaRaKuz24”. The video shows the clutch assembly, the gears, and the synchronizer sleeves, Also if for whatever reason you don’t want people posting links in the comments just let me know.
Found something thanks to your post. TY ! (not 1988 Jeep/Peugeot but some basics. TY
Would locking 2 of the nuts on the studs and box wrenching them off from the inner nut have worked the same as welding them? Or did you need impact force?
Ahhh, my Sunday inspiration. I'm headed out to the garage.
Awesome!
You caught that! You're good!
Hey Brian I notice that is a split case type. What models and engine sizes are these found in? No I am not quizzing you. Most of them I do are the AX series. So I am just curious.
well you actually invested time and effort on a BA10/5, anyway my XJ is leaking clutch fluid again from the internal slave, from what i have read the BA10/5, as crappy as it is at some point the designers wanted to it to accept an external slave, there are 2 bolts to hold the slave and a place for a ball stud for the release arm, what about this? did you notice it?
I bought my 88 Wrangler as "parts". Someone had reversed the long bolt with the short bolt on the starter, some other (just not knowing but dang they tried I'd guess) however. your abilities and common sense remind me of long days gone by. My kids father did same things and would wash the vehicle before returning it. All his boys grew up teaching themselves as he passed in 1980'. His half of them is the same curiosity and abilities though. One boy when 8 took the washing machine apart and cleaned the filter, found gold jewelry. Cleaning out an industrial carpet cleaning machine found a 4k zircon. What eyes, eyes bluer than robin's eggs. I love it all.
I would have a nightmare about taking something like this to bits - hat doffed to you, sir!
Thanks
I don't believe I always- or for that matter have ever before said ill of the French. I've been to France. I have much good to say about the food, fashion, art, and architecture there. I especially admire them for banning US genetically modified wheat and corn. That is a very smart move.
Freedom fries!
Thank you
7 mil minimum and actually preferred for dexterity.
Good video Brian. Lots of good information.
Great video, I always like to see inside manual transmissions just in case I ever have to open up my Getrag 420G! Also, it seemed fitting that you had to buy more metric dies since this transmission was built by the people who invented the metric system. :D
There wasn't budget to swap out this one. I took it on for the learning/teaching opportunity.
Thank you. Helped me see what I may be getting into.
We've agreed to it, talked about it, can't seem to find the time to get together and do it....
Great video! Thanks a million for posting this up very helpful!
I recommend the dies that are hex so you can use a wrench or socket. Was it the improperly installed detents rattling?
you're brave for opening that up!
9/10 would have been 10 if spunky was in the vid thanks brian
Hi sir i have a question, a the begin of video you had the transmission stay, on left side you had a plug with 2 pins this is the BACKUP LIGHT NO?
Share the Peugeot hate!
I had to do a clutch swap on a 307 diesel. I took me hours just to get to all the bolts that hold the transmission in place, clearly it was designed by someone with their head so far up their asses they could see the frogs they eaten for lunch.
1/4 inch socket will fit perfectly.
great video Brian
"Look at that pneumatic action" lol betcha wish you could hammer like that all the time
I saw that, even at 70, boys got some guns on him eh
Hi Brian Nice Video! What type of gloves do you recommend? Mine are 5 mil, and they break so easily. The store has 11 mil, are those too thick for mechanic work? Thanks!
awesome dude, thanks for ;sharing you knowledge!!
Thanks for another interesting and informative video!
Winner winner,chicken dinner Brian!
Yeah I posted the question before watching all the video. Thanks.
i need help with subaru ac compressor. I have a 99 forester and want to retro fit a newer ac compressor. The oem one has 2 plugs and the 08 one has one plug with one wire. i have pics and a multi meter. please help....
BRIAN HAAALPP ! My Belgium Bouvier des Flandres ate my cowboy boot because it had a bone heel. WOT doo I due?
It has to be SO difficult to work on something that has been assembled incorrectly. The tool marks on the case were major warning signs, ha ha.
i got the bolts out with vice grips and a hammer, the ones that he welded the bolts onto
Your making my back hurt turning that while sitting.
even tho this is from 2013. should never weld or make sparks with those tanks right there. Most likely wouldnt blow but then again if it did...wouldnt be seeing this video or any after. safety is number 1
the tanks are fine. The lines are what you need to watch.
Brian is 10X a better and genuine mechanic than ETCG and he works on later model and prestige cars.
Yet ETCG has 250 thousand subscribers and Briansmobile1 has just over 30 thou. Just goes to show there is no fairness in the world. :)
Brian, just curious. How did you start your repair business from home? I want to do the same. Who are your clients? Are they only friends and family? Please let me know.
Which transmission is this, the Peugeot BA 10/5?
Actually rebuilding mine, very straightforward, did find 2 broken bearings, but that was my fault I drove it too hard. So far did not have to mess with shifter; others have very complex shifters, removing and replacing so many balls and pins in sequence, those are the real nightmare. Remember the French built the successful SST, not a joke that thing went Mach 2+! Do not believe all that liberal BS online, those princess liberals could not work on anything! Parts are available for this trans! :)
Thanks for the video.
I have a nv3550 transmission and i'll need to remove the transmission to replace the unit bearings and the clutch while im at it since its out.
now the question is, is it easier to remove the transmission with the transfercase taken off prior to removing the transmission. (fyi i dn't have a transmission jack and was hoping to do this with a 3 ton floor jack and some jack stands for support)
cool vid mate :) not sure i really like the design either. nothing wrong with metric fasteners, much more simple than imperial stuff(not that there's anything wrong with imperial)
i don't think the transmission design is really the problem, i would say that the transmission is really too small for application. looks like you are fixing someone else's mistakes. not the first time i have had to repair problems caused by dodgey rebuilds :( . good vid though :) good explanation, good job on the repair
That the Peugeot ba 10 right? I had mine rebuilt its a light duty trans I wish I would have upgraded
Linda T. 04 Jeep Sports Wrangler 5-speed 6cyl.
Bought this jeep and when I took it in for an oil lube change the guy stated that the bolt by the drain plug where you add the grease was 1/2 way out and came out completely. He asked to start the jeep without brakes and jerked it back and forward a couple of times. It made some noise which he than ask to turn it off. He than used a paper clip to move something toward the bolt opening which he was than able to screw the bolt back in and tighten it. Shifting is good, no noise and sounds fine. Should I be concerned or should I take the jeep to a shop or wait and see if any noise or grinding shows up? I'm in my mid sixties, drive at night and don't want a shop to tell me I need all this expensive work for nothing. What's you option or anything you can help me with this. Thanks Linda T.
Yolanda Trevino A wise man once said "If its not broke don't fix it"
There is nothing "jiffy" about a proper oil change or lube job. If it is, you got lubed
I'm sure you're right, but my experience is limited and skewed unfavorably.
Brian, after watching this video and having seen you deal with the seized on bolts I was wondering if maybe you might be able to help me with something. I have a weber propane grill that I got around 2003 and I need to change the burners but the 2 bolts that hold them in are hopelessly seized in with all the grease. I don't wanna spray too many chemicals like wd40 inside because it says they are flammable. Do you have any helpful advice?
Hey Brian, I've been watching your videos for years and you seem to know your stuff. I'm mechanically inclined but can't seem to find the answer to my transmission problem anywhere online.
what are the reasons of a manual transmission binding up?
could low fluid cause that?
my car started with only on sharp turns standing still and starting to move it would bind up and then let go and roll fine.
now it's binding up alot that I can't even drive it. It's a GM f40 transmission if that helps.
I saw the seals were leaking on the axles and now all the fluid is pouring out every time. I will have to check where it's leaking but my question is, will low fluid in a manual transmission make it bind up? if not then what could be the cause. any help appreciated. Thanks!
kamilpolniak Low fluid can lead to wear, it's the wear that causes things to bind. Those fork pads, shaft journals, and even "floaters" (little bits and pieces) can bind when caught in the gears. Generally when your trans has enough oil, it flings debris away from spinning parts. If it's low, the debris acts like drier cookie dough and gravity pin-balls it into places when it can jam at lower speeds.
briansmobile1 that makes sense. it only started doing this about 3-5 days ago. I guess I'll drain the rest of the fluid that's left and see if there's any sort of shavings. Might just open it up anyways. Thanks alot for a quick response and great videos!
+ briansmobile1 That same Transmission was built a lot tougher for Peugeot's Turbo Gas, Turbo Diesel,V6; installed in the 504s,505s,604s, and EU Peugeot Powered Fords. The internals were stronger, with larger bearings,re-enforcing plate to tie the back part of both transmission half together, etc.
AMC/Renault must have haggled over the price and got the less-than version from Peugeot for a lot less dough.
@@dmcnamara9859
I never knew that.
i like it , a shitty job , but hey , gotta do it!! nice explanation and a goog view inside the case.
greatest idea
Hey buddy I have a 1988 Peugeot manual I'm wondering if I sent it to you would you rebuild it? I think everything's good but getting a grind from third to second probably a synchronizer?
Oh no! Not French hate, just Peugeot irritation pertaining to philosophy of product life and service. lol sometimes we get upset. Don't we?
G'day. I just watched your clutch explanation video along with this one. Just wanted to say that both are great. I do have one question regarding both clutch and transmission that I don't understand. You know when you're driving and around the 2000rpm range you can take it out of gear with out the clutch, then when you match the engine you can also put into another gear without the clutch? What is actually happening in the clutch mechanics/fly wheel to allow that?
Synchros work like brakes or clutch discs to get the gears going the same speed while you have the engine disengaged. When you clutchless shift you're getting them the same speed with the gas pedal instead of a synchro.
Ahh rightio. I appreciate the reply. Thanks a lot!
welcome
My BA 10 is poping out of reverse, every thig else works fine, what specific function would be a good guess for this peoblem?
I had an Eagle Premier once with a Pequot transmission and Renault engine. What a recipe for disaster. Almost 3k to rebuild the automatic tranny in that POS.
How do you spell work bench in French ? Lightin up cuz just funnin great vid..
What kindbof fluid did you use once you finished the build?
Any advice my ba-10 is popping out of reverse . I have to hold it in and feather the clutch and throttle for reverse to work . All other gears work , with no issues .
I was told by my rebuilder to swap out my trans when it did that. He said get rid of it. He said 5th and reverse are together so if your reverse is failing..... 5th isn't far behind. He said the wear point is the actually aluminum face of the housing and there's nothing you can do to repair it. No custom steel plate or anything possible...
He said remove and replace or upgrade.
He said showed me five of these transmissions he had on the shelf (he's a Jeep manual trans rebuilder) and he said he can't make one good one out of that pile. Parts are extremely difficult to find and expensive and now thanks to covid its even worse.
On the other hand.... ax15 everyone speaks highly about.
You ever rebuild any nv3550 manual trans
We’re did you get your parts to rebuild you manual transmission
What is a good replacement for Peugeot transmission in a 1987 Jeep Wrangler? Any suggestions?
AX-15. Stock trans in later models. Much better design, see novak adapters for questions.
Thanks! You Rock!
How about a 42RE transmission rebuild ?
