SECRETS ON SPEED CAMERA VANS FROM A REAL POLICEMAN - what can they really do?

- In today’s video - The police spill secrets on speed camera vans - probably the most contentious issue we could look at!
Speed is right up there in the Fatal Five and we see collisions daily caused by inappropriate and excessive speed.
This video shows you inside the camera van and also how it’s not just ‘braking distance’ it’s ‘thinking distance’ that effects how quickly you can stop. The difference in distance travelled in your ‘thinking time’ between 30mph and 40mph is 15 feet or nearly 5 meters. That’s potentially the difference between hitting or not hitting a child!
Police forces differ on thresholds for speeding offences. Most forces will allow 10% plus ‘x’ mph that then takes into account discrepancies in speedometer readings etc.
Thresholds can however be changed at any time so do not rely on this and it differs between forces. 1mph over the speed limit is technically an offence.
However it’s not all about limits. Not driving to the conditions and inappropriate speed are huge contributory factors in RTCs. The limit is a limit, not a target.
It’s not about revenue it’s about safety. If the camera identifies no offences that’s great as it’s done its job.
Stay safe

@@ihavenoname4851 It isn't a matter of common sense, it's a question of data - verifiable data. Old people do not walk miles to get to hospitals, such establishments provide transport and unless there are stats to support collisions, motor vehicle vs pedestrian, at or near hospitals, then there is no reason to provide enforcement. Exactly the same applies outside schools - it's the 500m radius around schools where kids cross unsupervised that the problems arise, NOT outside schools.

Your car odometer will read 30mph, the actual true speed of the vehicle will be 27mph. The camera van will also give you a percentage of tolerance over the limit.
So if you stay within the odometer limit you are significantly below a speed at which you can be prosecuted. Don’t speed. Don’t give your hard earned money away.

Yeah I understand that speeding kills but you can’t judge someone else’s thinking time based on your own opinion. A lot of people that drive at a faster speed watch the cars wayyyyy ahead of them to ensure they have a better reaction time.
Its that difference in speed. If you got fast reactions you're going to stop quicker at 70 but still have the same reaction time if you're driving at 90 so the difference is still the same
@Phuket Wurd your reaction time doesn't change regardless if you've got good reactions or not. If its the same person drive both at 70 and at 90 you'll still get a gap
In my experience the vast majority don’t. Speeding isn’t synonymous with good driving and often (probably more frequently) it’s the opposite.
The point I think being made in the video is that reaction times are the same irrespective of speed, meaning that a faster car will travel more distance before the reacting driver starts to apply the brakes. He’s correct of course.
@Phuket Wurd nope clearly not
Speed doesn't kill. It's stopping quickly.
I'm a compliance officer working for a local authority. The council have a policy around the use of council vehicles that all drivers are responsible for upholding all the road rules. The vehicles are monitored for speed, acceleration/ braking, and cornering and we get a weekly report regarding our driving behaviour.
Some of my colleagues have complained that they can't drive to the road rules, particularly around speed, and I'm like, we are compliance officers, how can we expect to enforce others if we can't comply ourselves.
When I got caught speeding the van was in a farmers field on a bend totally hidden, 30mph limit doing 36mph (got the picture) road conditions, dry road empty of all human and animal life, from that day on I always refer the police as the Revenue collection agency (RCA) well rules are rules and I broke one but the speeding awareness course afterwards which was conducted by 2 ex police officers left me with the impression that I and others were funding their lucrative life styles.

Making people break their necks to look out for these vans is more dangerous than speeding!? Do they realise they make drivers take their attention off the road!??
The van will only ever be up ahead where you are already looking.
When I once diagnosed charging problems (alternator) on vehicles, I would ask the driver if the charging light was on full or half brilliance (can help diagnosis) I was amazed at how many drivers told me that they do not know, because they never looked at the dashboard. This admission led me to believe that they probably were also not monitoring their road speed.
This also gave me an insight as to why past vehicles, that ''had'' a temperature gauge, had overheated and in some cases, caused engine damage. The same thing applies for the low oil warning light. Regularly checking ones instrument panel can save a driver expense not only on possible engine damage, but also that costly letter from H.M.C. Traffic Division.
How do they know when they were low on fuel if they never looked at the gauge?
another karen how many is there we are not short of em thats for sure.
Don't agree with them but that was very interesting and great to see the police being quite open about how it operates.
Just remember keep your eyes off the road and stare at your speedo. Amount of accidents here in Australia is ridiculous because not keeping eyes on the road, will happen there too
There is a vast difference in speed and dangerous driving in my opinion, anyone with an ounce of sense knows that when it’s raining, snowing, or icy the speed limit should be maybe be lower in certain circumstances. But if a modern car is driven in dry sunny conditions on a fast A or B road I think speed can be safe, it’s dangerous driving that causes accidents not speed. Unfortunately most people do not receive any driver training in their lives other than when they learnt to drive. I feel uneasy with the idea of these camera vans as they often lurk around bridges with long straight roads, why not park up near schools? I feel a police officer stopping people and physically talking to them would have more of an effect, I speak from experience as an advanced driver, bike car, and lorry.
The issue isn't that speed causes accidents, it's more that WHEN a collision takes place, the faster you hit something, the greater the level of injury relative to the circumstances.
There are very few statistics that support the need to park near schools.
Once an officer is tied up dealing with someone, all the passing traffic is simply free to do whatever. The above can focus on 99% of all passing traffic - much more effective.
and that would be when the biker reaches back and covers up their plates xD
Speed cameras, the purpose? To rinse your pockets.
Nothing to do with road safety.

Fine, now lets see all the other traffic violations being upheld on the road. Nonsense, speed has never been a cause of an accident.
Accidents occur due to a driver's misjudgment of the road and surrounding conditions, not speed
But the speed at impact directly affects the level of injury or damage.
The writing on this van should say not "Safety Camera Van" but "Revenue Camera Van".
Regardless of whether they are hiding behind a bush, under a bridge or round a blind corner.. the fact still remains... if YOU don't speed you will never get caught.

Anyways I agree with the concept of speed cameras, I'm just not sold on how they are currently used
These aren't there to slow traffic at dangerous places. they're there to catch speeding vehicles. Imagine driving down a quiet duel carriageway with a 50mph speed limit. You're doing 65 because it feels perfectly safe, you're in full control of the vehicle. Yet you'll still receive the same penalty as someone doing 45 outside a tight residential 30mph limit area. One is far more dangerous than the other.
Road traffic legislation is not based upon your feelings and this is just your ego talking because you consider your abilities exceed mandatory restrictions.
"so, basically... "
If we hid in the bushes & filmed people then I think the Police would have something to say about it.
Why? You can film whatever the eye can see from a public place.
If it's in the interest of safety they should be visible for miles , not tucked around a corner for people to slam on the anchors at the last second . What sort of safety is this?
How can you make them visible for miles? There would never be mobile speed enforcement in cities, towns and villages as such roads will naturally only be relatively short.
Why do you endorse driving around a blind bend at a speed fast enough to get a notice for speeding?

Technology CAN go wrong even if the device has been recently calibrated. They are supposed to use a police car with a calibrated speedo at the start and end of each session but they don't (anyone fancy challenging that in court?). Can you remember that delivery guy who lost his job for doing 80 in a 30 limit? Camera evidence submitted to court proved that he was only doing 20mph! Also stats show that the introduction of 20mph speed zones actually increased accidents - mainly because people are spending more time checking their speedo.
Rubbish, there is no calibrated car speedo required, you are many years out of date.
In the USA they have very few speed cameras - yet people obey the speed limits much better than in the UK. Because they have considerably more patrol officers - there us a very strong chance you will get stopped by an officer in person - that seems to be a more effective deterrent to speeding.
And "Karen" is actually *not* a police officer - she is employed by the police and that's why, on her jacket, the label states "police staff".
Yes, exciting isn't it?
First of all speed doesn’t kill, collisions or crashes kill! 😂 secondly! Germany has the autobank where you can travel without speed limits and still very low in accidents in general and deaths, while in my country, people die because they go off the road on a bend because the asphalt is not of good quality and the car can’t break down properly or having good handling in the corners. Thirdly we need to stop giving driving licenses to people who don’t qualify for, those are the ones who in an empty road early in the morning they cause traffic because they do 15 on a 40 miles road, or break down completely in a roundabout when nobody is coming from the right and from any other direction, cause you to almost crash behind them, or deciding to park all of a sudden without indicating!
And fourth we need to start taking the licenses from people who are too old to drive amymore

@@pixlhound Not quite. Risk of Fatal Injury: Pedestrians and Car Occupants' is a great place to start.
Speed is unquestionably everything.
@Unleash The Dragon Within no, your explanation just proved that speed is unquestionably not everything. If it was, what you hit would have no bearing on the outcome. They aren’t allowed no matter what. Unless those blue lights are on for an emergency. Your case doesn’t sound like it was.
@@KING0SISQO You're wrong I'm afraid. Common misconception.
NO warning equipment has to be activated for trained police drivers to make use of exemptions. It's commonly stated by the public that the equipment has to be used but that isn't correct. It's down to the driver to justify and also to be accountable for their actions should they be asked to account for their actions in a court of law.
Many of the public are also wrong on the "Can't use them unless going to an emergency"... the actual rule is "making use of warning equipment or exemptions FOR a policing purpose"... doesn't have to be an emergency call.
If they were trying to discreetly catch up to a vehicle that had been reported stolen up ahead, say in an unmarked car, blaring a siren and flashing blue lights gives the game away completely and the driver of said stolen car might then take off, starting a dangerous pursuit when it's not necessary. On the other hand if an unmarked car with no lights activated and no siren overtakes a car or two it's less noticeable and less obvious.

Not so much as a phone call from them on any of the crimes......I’m sure someone doing 80 on an empty motorway is far more serious.
The operators sitting in the vans are Police Staff, not officers.
@@williammitchell1267 still a waste of funding
Don't be silly they don't make any money catching criminals or finding your property they just think fuck you chore you have insurance claim on it
The use of ANPR (which this van has) is powerful in stopping the larger criminals and known thieves. Criminals have to travel so the more they can be tracked on their location, these “flagged” vehicles will be stopped, searched and wanted suspects arrested. Remember Jack the Ripper was caught because of his number plate, it’s a useful tool. Unfortunately the only way we can get more police on the streets is to increase our council tax, but we’d all moan about that too.
ANPR is great on travelling police vehicles which are ready to act. By chance we drove by our stolen van on the motorway (with a new number plate 8 hours after going missing). When the thief recognised another van with the same sign writing they erratically pulled off the motorway, down a slip road, smashed in to 2 cars, drove off and was never seen again and we never heard a thing back on it after reporting all this as it was happening. Surely a white Mercedes sprinter with a red Nissan micra registration plate travelling down one of the biggest motorways in Britain should have been picked up by a fixed ANPR camera? No because they don’t spend money on them or policing them because they won’t make as much money as mobile speed camera vans. The mobile speeding camera vans and the operators in them will have a huge set up and running cost which is mainly spent as the vans make money. Real officers fighting real crime is what we need. Can those vans detect a drink driver weaving all over the road doing 50 on the motorway in an old banger that just scraped through its MOT. No. Can actual police cars with actual officers driving around the roads looking for all forms of crime. Yes. The money being spent on the mobile speed vans is purely profit driven.

Anything but control the speed of your car.
I'm an advanced driver of 42 years and I have to admit that I speed everyday and jump red lights (early of course) but I still think these guys do a great job. Most people who speed are shit drivers, have no observational road reading skills, drive shit cars and just put their foot down and hope for the best. When I go out to make a journey in my car I always walk around the car to check my tyres. If I approach the car from the front I always walk around the back of the car to make sure there is no obstacle or more importantly a person behind the car. If I pull away on the road I check behind by using my mirrors but I always look over my shoulder as mirrors have blind spots. I was surprised when I had advanced driving lessons and then took my advanced test that most of the stuff I learned was just basically common sense such as, don't drive too close, slow down when it's wet or dark or both, use brakes to slow down instead of gears as you can control the vehicle more easily and safely with brakes than gears and brakes are cheaper to renew than a clutch and so on. These guys do a necessary job in areas where residents are are worried about their kids being knocked down by speeding idiots who can't drive.
