    That’s a shame, Lyn. Hopefully the pups will root up nicely. I’ve found the Eriosyce/Neoporteria/Copiapoa are the more challenging ones to keep happy in our climate. Keep us updated on how the offsets do. Thank you for sharing with us as always. Have a wonderful afternoon and evening from Edith & myself to you and Hans ❤️🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜

      Thanks so much Daz :-D I was so gutted to see this Eriosyce had rotten to the core, but so relieved to save the pups, I had been so careful with the watering but I am thinking that the very high temps in the polytunnel may have caused it to go dormant, I notice that mid Winter and Mid Summer seem to be when I notice rot the most, our climate is definitely challenging haha, thanks so much Daz for your wonderful Friendship and amazing comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you and beautiful Edith lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to England and Singapore for a sunny weekend XXXX

    Such a shame but at least you have 2 pups. I use horticultural charcoal in all my soil mixes now. It helps with any bacteria that maybe in the soil. It doesn’t take much for rot to set in does it. Sorry you lost your cactus 🌵 thank goodness the cactus had pups xxxx

    Oh, Lyn, I've lost SO many cacti the last month. I hit a bit of a rough patch, feeling homesick and whatnot, and completely neglected most of them. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to save any of them, but I didn't catch it fast enough. The happy part of this is, I now get to shop for some new cacti, and I'm out of my funk. These videos are always super useful. Sending you love and plant power from AZ!

    Well, what a dramatic vid,but hopefully a successful result with the pups!
    It's crazy how quick success can turn to an near total disaster in a blink of
    A eye.
    As a total newbie, is it a viral, bacteria, or fungal problem?
    I understand that it may not be a weakness in the plants, but the strength
    Of infection that is attacking them in the first place.
    Well good luck to you both with the pups and I hope that this is not a
    Problem that can freely spread to your other plants.
    First class information, and thanks to you both, Bill.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 года назад +1

      Thank you so very much Bill :-D I was so gutted to lose the Mother plant but so happy to have been able to save the two pups, I think what may have happened is although I always wait until the soil has totally dried out before watering again, because the temperature has been so hot in the polytunnel above 100F it may have caused the cactus to go into a bit of a mid Summer dormancy, and the watering may have caused the rot, but I am not sure 100% what has caused it, it was growing so well but sometimes insect pests may pierce the skin by sucking the cactus and this can cause an open wound the size of a pin head, and infection can set in and cause rot this way, but I think because the rot was from the base up its more likely caused from me watering it at a tie it was having a bit of a mid Summer rest, thanks so much Bill for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

    One of the things I love about your videos is you're so good about showing the " disasters" as well as the successes. I just had to unpot and cut one of my star aloes. In a clay pot, chunky mix and I use a moisture meter so it doesn't get watered until it hits 0. But it's like you said, Lyn, who knows why? Glad you had 2 nice healthy pups. I cut mine, let it callous and it's in dry soil now. Fingers crossed it will develop a good root system and I cut far enough up the stem!

      Thats fantastic you caught your Star Aloe in time and I bet it will recover and grow a new root system really well, its always a mystery when we know we are doing everything right with our plants but they still get rot, but thank goodness you was able to save your Aloe and I was able to save two of the pups from this plant, thanks so much Molly for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a sunny Sunday today XXXX

    Cool video Lynn, thank you!
    And as always long live king Hass!!!
    Oh hey Lynn...I was watching your video and halfway through remembered that I left my cactus seedlings outside and it's raining hard here!!
    I started them in a milk jug that I cleaned and cut halfway through...of course with drainage holes.... anyways they got really soaked....is there anything I could do to maybe speed up the drying process ??
    Thought about using a hair dryer but I'm not sure if that would make it worse....what should I do???
    Please help!

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 года назад +1

      Hi David :-D so sorry for only just seeing your comment, I hope your seedlings are ok, what I do if I want to dry out soil in pots faster is I use a few sheets of kitchen roll and put it under the pots, the absorbent kitchen roll helps to soak up the moisture in the soil, I wouldn't use a hair dryer but if you have a cool fan you can put this near the seedlings as the circulating air will also help to speed up the drying, I hope this helps, thanks so much David for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX
