one quote that stills stick with me that I think deserves attention is one that come from a recap episode "You know why people have eyes in the front? Because they have to move forward to see the landscape in the distance. If you had eyes in back all you could see is your home town getting farther away; you can't move forward like that. If your eyes are in front what you see in the distance keeps getting closer. That's what lets people move forward."
I love how the solo at 2:50 really encapsulates the story. It blazes out of the gate after the second chorus using the same rhythm and guitar motifs we’ve heard throughout the song, building tension with the repeated drum and rhythm guitar line until it rockets into action at 3:07. This part tells the story of Kamina, him bursting out of the underground and taking on the world, gathering momentum and rocketing forward, as symbolized by the soaring keys and lighter drums, the energy is contagious! It repeats the main motif of the song twice, each time adding more musical texture as team Dai Gurren grows until at the peak of its momentum it is suddenly cutoff. At 3:29 the melody falls to pieces, the rhythm falters, and we know what this means: the core of the song, the core of Team Dai Gurren, has fallen. Kamina is dead and the solo no longer has a direction. The rhythm drifts about aimlessly for a few seconds until it starts picking up again with that same anticipation we heard in the beginning but with new instrumentation. A single guitar rips out of the murk and with an intensity and desperation we haven’t heard yet. It takes up the broken pieces of the first part of the solo and takes them to even greater heights, finishing the solo with this powerful climax and leading into the bridge. This guitar is Simon, and whenever I hear this solo I remember the incredible story of Gurren Lagann.
Also the way the guitar section solos over a quieter rhythm and melody of the first solo section is totally symbolic of how the memory of Kamina propped up Simon and gave him strength. This whole solo is just full of little symbolic things like that and I can’t get enough
I remember watching the US premier at Anime Expo. It was great because they only listed the first movie on schedule and surprised everyone by showing the 2nd one immediately after.

So I didn’t have a good beginning with mecha and for many years after my journey with anime. I finally started and finished watching gurren Lagann a week ago and let me say this was one of my favorite journeys I’ve ever had with a anime. I avoid this one for so long because of my not care for mecha and because one of the main characters was just wearing fan service on the cover. But after ignoring all of that and getting past episode 4 (my reason for that is that is the episode where the animation kinda tanks for the entire episode like it looked unfinished) I fell in love with the show. Kamina yoko simon nia viral kittan and so many other great characters just wowed me. And that opening song. Oof it took my breathe away and also me realize what that song that was playing in my head for over ten years and I was super relieved. Especially in the final battle against the anti spiral when you hear that playing you know something crazy and good is about to happen. The animation the speeches the fights and the emotions I had although and up to the ending had me cheering and crying. This is in my top 5 animes I’ve ever watched. It has also kinda given me a second chance with mecha My regret is that I took so long to watch this show. I will believe in the me that believes in myself.

"Believe in the me who believes in you"
When you're supposed to be an unbeatable boss, then this plays.
that's when you kick logic out and do the impossible. Why? Cause that's how we roll.
When you're fighting the unbeatable boss

I envy you. I didn't watch it fearing I wouldn't understand it, but didn't know it recaps AND expands on the story. 😢
was really upset when their so called North American rerelease was only the US, not even canada
one quote that stills stick with me that I think deserves attention is one that come from a recap episode "You know why people have eyes in the front? Because they have to move forward to see the landscape in the distance. If you had eyes in back all you could see is your home town getting farther away; you can't move forward like that. If your eyes are in front what you see in the distance keeps getting closer. That's what lets people move forward."
They dont make anime's like this today.
My man is a philosopher or something over here. Gurren Lagann still peak.

I remember watching the US premier at Anime Expo. It was great because they only listed the first movie on schedule and surprised everyone by showing the 2nd one immediately after.
The sheer absurdity of sizes this show developed over time was phenomenal.
From a drill bit that can fit in your hand to a universe-sized one standing at over 300+ trillion light years tall
That's a multiverse-sized drill if I've ever seen one.
"No, that's YOUR limitation! You sit here in your closed-off universe (Computer Room), locking away other life forms (Skyrim NPC's) like you're some kind of king (Arrogant Murder hobo)! That's nobody's limitation but your own!"
As a Smug 27yr old shut-in, I feel really called out.

Made me realize that there's no point in being sad and depressed when I can stand up and push for everyone else around me. Absolutely insane how this anime still hasn't been topped
You know whats so funny? Im not really a huge anime guy myself. But I enjoyed watching a couple animes in my life. And my mind just randomly thought: "Hm, maybe I should watch Gurren Lagann and see what it's all about?" It was an extremely random Idea, but I wanted to watch an anime for a long time after I finished kill la kill. So I randomly went and watched the 1st episode of it. Then watched the 2nd, the 3rd. Until finally I became hooked and finished it. Literally, watching Gurren Lagann was just a random thought in my mind, not knowing that this well known anime was absolutely that legendary itself. But eh, who knows. Cause sometimes you just gotta Kick logic out of the situation, and go for it! Cause thats the way Team Dai-Gurren rolls!
Gurren Lagann is literally what every Shonen anime should strive to be! 🌌
