I actually feel sad for Bertholdt. He grew up in a cruel society, was brought up by a sick man who couldn't stay on his feet. For this reason, he served his homeland to deserve honorary status and cure his dad. Bertolt wasn't brainwashed by adults and didn't want to kill anybody. He just wanted to live a quiet life, probably marry a beloved girl, and start a family. But, unfortunately, this guy was just harnessed for Marley's war he and other children were involved in. He was a weapon, a warrior, a soldier, but not a human or a little boy who should have played outside with his friends, spend some time with the family or enjoy the world's amenities. Instead, turning 12 he got to an unknown country, had to lie to Paradis inhabitants, and murder thousands of them. For 5 years he pretended to be a good guy for Marley's enemies and had been thinking only about completing the mission. For FIVE years he was away from home and never saw it Some manga spoilers His memories and power, his opportunity to express his feelings for Annie, his life were taken away. Bertolt was a victim, a slave of circumstances. He was separated from his father and didn't come back home. His life was sacrificed for saving someone else's one, for saving the world, that 20% of people who managed to survive He had to hurt those, who loved him and serve those, who didn't need him. I just... I just want to hug him. This guy is one of the most underrated characters in the show. I wish he would be happy
My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.
"murder some of them" 250,000 people died as a result of Bertholdt breaching the wall the first time. 20% of the total population shouldn't really be considered some, but aside from that you make some good points.
In this manga I will never get over Berthold's death, Colossal Titan or not, a sixteen years old dying defenseless after losing his limbs, without anyone to save him being eaten was too much for me. When I started my rereading I thought what stopped me from reading the first time, and it was his death. He only wanted his father to have medical care in Marley but died not knowing his father also died at the end. I wish effect of his memories on Armin wasn't just about his crush on Annie but his life in ghetto. What caused a child to be a expert shooter in the first place?
Bruh have you forgotten how Marco died helpless, begging for his life and the last thing he saw was three people that he thought his friends fleeing away and watching him get eaten by a titan
I had a similar feeling from watching the GoT episode where Oberyn duels the Mountain, that was when I lost hope for the series after realizing the author used hope to torture the readers.
It has been a real situation in occasion. Of course it's not so much forgeting you are a spy but the fact that you spend so much time pretending to be someone else that your brain ends up making connections and forming empathic links with facts that once were only fabrications, so it starts to question which version is the real one. The spy sent there in a sabotage mission? Or, in this case, the young boy fighting titans in order to save all of his comrades?

Their world is built on too many centuries of hate, imperialism, tyranny, mutual genocide, civil war, and tit-for-tat recriminations for anyone to be innocent, but one way or another they're all the (reluctant?) heroes of their own stories.
I came here hours after the anime ended. This song brings back so many memories for me, of when we were still discovering everything, of when we didn't know anything. I have been following this work for 8 years, today I am 24 years old. It was a huge pleasure to follow all of this, certainly the best anime of all time, no other has this level of rich detail. A true masterpiece.

Season 1: Vogel im Kafig (Carla's Death) Season 2: YOUSEEBIGGIRL (Bertholdt and Reiner Transformation) Season 3: Apple Seed (Bertholdt's Time to Shine)
@Jion I was just pointing out that they were arguing over who deserved to live, but they didn't even question using Bertholdt's life as a tool to heal somebody. Not saying I don't understand why. Just figured I'd point it out since dehumanization of the enemy is a really common theme in AOT
If you really think about it. Bertolt, Reiner, & Annie are like the reverse of Eren, Mikasa, & Armin. Its like the first three are the MCs for Marley & the second three are the MCs for Paradise Island. Oh man, I love AoT so much I love how they always manage to put in subtle symmetry and different ways of viewing each side. Like, for example if the story were to start on the Marley side we would all be taught that everyone inside the walls was a devil and that they were evil, just like how Bertolt, Reiner, & Annie were taught and we would automatically side with Marley because that's all we really know. But because we started from inside the walls with ERENS perspective specifically, we automatically thought that all Titans were monsters that needed to be wiped out. As a side note: I think it was a really smart decision to chose Eren as the MC for inside the walls. This random kid who was quite literally in Mikasas words "The embodiment of humanities rage" We automatically wanted to hate the Titans because Eren our MC did. I didn't even really notice it until just now writing this but S1 Eren really had a massive role playing a part in AoTs Titan perspective. Then we get flipped round with S3 Eren where he realizes what Titans really are and sees them from an entirely different way. Just like the viewer watching. (Wtf is happening I literally just ment to say a single sentence ☠) Wow, I've been ranting for a long ass time. Anyways I think the entire backbone of AoT is really just different perspectives, but they managed to make it super interesting and subtle so you don't really pay attention to it, but at the same time its still fucking with your mind because you don't ever know who the real bad guy is. Who really deserves to LIVE? Who really deserves to DIE? Who knows 🤷♀️
Reiner, bertholdt attacked eldians because they were taught that paradise land is filled with devils. They don't deserve to get hated cuz if we were them we would've thought the same and went to attack them. Same thing with gabi, gabi didn't deserve the hate she gets from fans she was taught that everyone inside the walls are devils.
@Minerva couldn't have put it better myself. As you said, it was a brilliant move to introduce Aot to the world through Eren's eyes. In retrospect, I realize that what makes Aot such a masterpiece is how Isayama introduced an idea, got all the fans on board to collectively hate one big enemy (no pun intended), only to do a complete 180. Everything the characters and we, the fans, believed in came crashing down leaving us questioning what exactly it was that we were so emotionally invested in, just like everyone on Paradis Island. The Marleyans' side of the story made it impossible to hate that one enemy. There _is_ no enemy. Aot is one big morally grey playground. its an absolutely heartbreaking, yet real story. I'm taking this story to my grave.

Despite Armin having the deeper connection with Bertholdt from the main trio, I think Bertholdt and Mikasa are more alike. These people... They don't look evil... They look... Terrified. This is why Attack on Titan is one of the greatest anime to exist, there are no Demons, no God's here, just people trying to survive
There are no real demons. Only humans with their greed, thirst for power. That’s how AOT portray everyone. For marleyans, eldians are the devils for ruling them for many years(their past) and for paradis, Marleyans are the devils for destroying the walls, terrorizing their peaceful lives.
@@SuperProtect We could keep repeating this whole "no u did it first" logic until we trace back all the way to the past where a monkey slapped another monkey. No one is a demon.
I read the manga so there's a lot more development, especially for Reiner, but also all the warriors. But watching the anime and revisiting these scenes really made me start to feel sorry for these three. (Annie, Reiner, Berthold). Or four to be exact. SPOILERS They were children soldiers, cursed with a gift that will kill them before they can enjoy any kind of life that they worked for. Behind enemy lines, no parents, no comfort, no place to call home, forced to take the lives of people of their own race. Imagine waking up like that every morning for years. No wonder Reiner snapped, Annie was depressed and detached and Berthold never talked.

Same... I have finished watching this anime 4days ago, still astounded by this beautiful masterpiece of an anime... It shows us the confliction of emotions, pain of losing, the dark reality of racism, war & politics & so on.. The ending really had me in tears... Almost every character has a great writing, it's too tough to not feel for them. ❤️
They need to use that exact music in that moment, everyone would lose their mind over the double cross. Eren is cold as ice, what a way to come full circle.
There could not be a more perfect ending. However, it was so difficult to follow that it confused many people and was criticised. In the anime, explanations may be added in places.
Shingeki no kyojin is truely a materpiece, it doesnt just give you a black and white story about villans and hero's there is so much to it that makes you sympathize with the "bad guys" its worth watching ❤

Yeah they were just kids. They just did what they were send for. They are innocent as much as every dead kid inside of the walls. These guys are best they are angels. Like the monke guy. He was throwing rocks to show he was a friend. (!)
I'm pretty sure losing Bertholdt is what made Reiner go over the edge to suicide. Even in the middle of absolute hell, he had his best friend. Living without him just...had to have felt wrong.
Reiner and Bertholdt were my heroes. Despite what they did to the main characters, the horrible things they did, they were such well done characters displaying two warriors caught between Duty and Honor. Two people raised to despise the devils of the island, only to live with them and realize that the term "Devil" is subjective. The series is a master piece surrounding tragedy and goals that aren't exactly wrong. A king enslaves his people, one of the slaves flees for her life. Slave becomes the Founding Titan and returns to the king serve him. King of Eldia uses her as a weapon. The world fears the Titans. The world isn't wrong for being upset with the Subjects of Ymir, but at the same time, the Subjects of Ymir aren't wrong themselves. One king in history changed the world, and bore this complicated scenario in which every man, woman, and child is both the hero AND the villain. That is what Attack on Titan is. Reiner and Bertholdt, and later Erin himself, show us how grey that thin line between hero and villain truly are. Shows us the reality of war, and how people who are often villainized as the enemies of the nation and "Evil" aren't very different from us, and may see us the same. I went on too long, but that's just how much of a masterpiece this manga/anime series truly is. Hajime Isayama is a freaking genius!
Funny thing is until season 4, everyone would hate Reiner & Bertholdt... But after watching the final season, your concept about them would be definitely changed... Specially about Reiner... Blud got severe PTSD after the war in Wall Maria... Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie.. They were nothing but some pawns for Marley who hadn't any choice but to fight for them
I really love how this anime gives us the perspective of every side/background character. That's why Eren told Reiner that he finally realized he's just the same as him. They were both trying to protect their close ones. So in their perspective, Reiner is the protagonist.
They did a really good job of making Bertholdt and Reiner sympathetic antagonists over the course of Season 2 and 3. That little warrior's salute that Reiner and Bertholdt gave each other before getting into their positions was really impactful to me.
Frankly i can never understand the sympathy or empathy for berthold, 250.000 people died due to him breaching the wall, that's worse than two nukes. He deserves no forgiveness nor empathy, his death was frankly one of the most satisfying moments in all of AOT, especially after what he did to marco.
@fabrypetty1689 Eren killed billions across the earth and drove various ecosystems and wildlife to extinction, so we lowkey don't really care about the breach. Let's not forget that the Paradis government ordered the 250,000 citizens to try and "retake" wall Maria even though they knew the outcome as the majority of the citizens were not soldiers, just to eliviate the burden of feeding them.
This show is truly two side of the coin, each are protagonist depend on where you look. But at the end of the story one will face up and one will have to go down. A truly rare story where you don't know which side are you on. Masterpiece.
except annie bertholdt and reiner attacked innocent people first. The attack on Marley wouldnt have happened if it werent for those three. No amount of brainwashing excuses what they did. The amount of pity i see on here for them is astounding. Do you feel the same pity for racists because theyre raised to be racists? Cause thats what Marleyans are
@@xarachne8473 The thing is those "racist" get's to live with them and knows the terrible things they've done and suffer from it. They didn't know anything because they were kids back then. So yeah, they also a victim.
The picture says so much about their feelings.......knowing that there is just one way this ends for both of them and that's with imminent death.....they've been forced to kill their own people and their comrades and accept this as their reality T_T
They better play this masterpiece when the rumbling happens. Just imagine how crazy it would be I get chills all over my body just by thinking about it.
aot is scaringly similar to real life. In the end there are no heroes or villains, everyone just wants to achieve their dreams and desires .They are just humans Everything is relative and depends on your perception of the world.

@@UzumakiNaruto919 Well, I mostly blame his mindset. He's not been committed to his cause since the events pre-chapter 90. If he had Eren's resolve still, who knows.
@@blackmanwithcomputer The only reason his mindset is not there is because of his own actions. His doubt is pretty much spot on. He knew at some point he was fighting for the wrong side. I do understand that he was doing what he did for his own family and those back home. However, he can never say anything to Eren no matter the situation. Eren is literally doing the same thing, but with the correct, rock solid resolve unlike Reiner. I bet you that deep down, Eren is also trying to save Reiner from what he did, and what the people Reiner work for, made him do. I am also saying that no one from that side can blame Eren for anything he did. In my honest opinion. Everyone is a villain, but the most correct and sane villain is Eren out of them all. They created an anti-hero. Watch Eren pull a Lelouch in the end, Attack on Titan-style.

“Attack on titan WMID” vocals by Eliana is for Reiner
This random kid who was quite literally in Mikasas words "The embodiment of humanities rage"
We automatically wanted to hate the Titans because Eren our MC did.
I didn't even really notice it until just now writing this but S1 Eren really had a massive role playing a part in AoTs Titan perspective. Then we get flipped round with S3 Eren where he realizes what Titans really are and sees them from an entirely different way. Just like the viewer watching.
(Wtf is happening I literally just ment to say a single sentence ☠)
Wow, I've been ranting for a long ass time.
Eren fucked that aot logic,He basically became an ultimate chad like erwin who only looks forward to his Goal.
deep
In AOT, there's no such thing as black or white characters, all the characters are grey. I agree with what you said.
Bertholdt is the only one who saw the big picture before everyone.....I have no idea how sad when I saw him ate by Armin

Imperial Guardsman I pretty much agree with Zeke, Eldians should not reproduce anymore because more Eldians will suffer in Marley’s hand. But I also agree with Eren because this world is not fair at all, therefore destroying it would be a good idea.
He'll get avenged by the wall titans, don't worry.
Was really sad to see Berthold die, can't wait to see how this all ends.
I loved watching him cry and die in agony. It was so incredibly satisfying.
@@name49 you do realize that he was brainwashed to believe that the people within the walls are evil, right? And that they can't go back to their hometown without fulfilling their duty
But he lived with them 3 years, isn't that enough?

They were nothing but some pawns for Marley who hadn't any choice but to fight for them
6:22 I love the alarm like sound that goes in the song. It really tells you ITS ABOUT TO GO DOWN.
OMG, same!
I think 7:21 is what you're talking about
I still can't believe AOT is over now. It's definitely going in the history books as one of the greatest anime of all time ❤
can we take a moment to appreciate the fanart , you can really feel the emotion in the drawing, fear and determination
Just in time for this to be recommended after the final season trailer came out. Perfect timing.

Before they went to military inside walls. They saw them as devils. Brainwashed children.
And they got proven wrong.
They better play this masterpiece when the rumbling happens. Just imagine how crazy it would be I get chills all over my body just by thinking about it.
The soundtrack for Rumbling should be more eerie imo. "The Rumbling" by Rok Nardin and Samuel Kim is a good example.

@@hossel_ No, after he gets a surprise visit.
@@blackmanwithcomputer He still gets owned, which is what should have happened a long time ago
