Set Off An Avalanche

- Went in to the mountain today knowing the avalanche danger rating was high, right from valley bottom to alpine yet we were still a bit surprised by the one we set off. It was a good lesson for us not to get too complacent after playing in an area for a couple hours and not seeing any signs of instability. All in all it was another good day spent up on the mountains.

Great stuff as usual. Also, it's great to see you be more active about stewardship and Av safety as your views have grown. It's really easy to edit out "boring" stuff like that but you've been making it point to express the importance of being smart, checking av reports and paying attention to risks and conditions around you. Mountain riding is growing like crazy, making a point to talk about that stuff might literally save someone's life.

My job for 38 years was investigating workplace accidents in Federal jurisdictions. 20 some years ago I investigated three individuals who were caught in a workplace accident avalanche. Their job was to do snow analysis for avalanche information risk, this was prior to the internet and you would phone a number and get the risk rating before you head to the mountains. 1 of these individuals was a winter mountain guide. They were ski touring into an area they had been many times and digging snow pits for risk assessment. They were caught in a slab avalanche when they were skiing out. One individual died, the other 2 lived. I went to the area where the avalanche happened it was just a small hill, it looked so innocuous. These individuals were well trained and they got caught. Be OVERSAFE when it comes to avalanche risk assessment. Really enjoy your riding but its not worth being buried alive for a rush. OVERSAFE. Live to ride another day.

Sled collisions, tree taps, sleds raining down on riders, and now avalanches! Crazy couple episodes. Outta three years never seen this many clustered close calls and here you got me puckered on the regular! Cheers
Awesome day of riding and learning just how unique an avy can be from slope to slope. Even right next to each other. And big props to Braydn for killing it on the 146 today!!!
Glad you are all safe. Conditions change so quickly in areas so close to each other. Good reason to never ride alone. In 1992 I was smashed in a class 3 slab avi in the icefields area of Banff National Park. Thought I was smart, but more cocky than I knew. Nearly cost me my life. From awesome to a horror show. Never ride alone. A little slide can bury you enough to not be able to move for sure. I was shocked when everything stopped how set up the snow was. My head was above snow but I could not have undug myself further alone.

Just returned from 3 days at Rasmussen school in park city Idaho. Got a personal lesson with Brett on the last day. We did a drainage similar to what you do. Much respect on your skill level and awareness. I’m excited to challenge myself on the future when my area gets more snow. Thanks for the inspiration Matt.

I'm currently undergoing Cancer treatment in Kelowna and I look forward to seeing your content every morning...it really helps to raise my spirits. Even my wife is getting into it.
I live in Fernie and I was only able to get one ride in at the start of December, but I hope to get some rides in at the end of the season if I've recovered enough.
Your dad and the rest of the Jerry's are great fun to watch as I'm a Jerry myself. I'm 61 but try to ride like a 20 year old. LOL.

Definitely show the avys. For me I watch what you guys are doing (way steeper then what I ride) and I think you guys never trigger anything so it kind of gives a false sense of security. Loving the vids. I found this one very helpful on how dangerous it is out there
I think being in trees can give a false sense of security to, avy experts say if trees are far enough apart to ski through, the slope can slide.

Polaris had a plug on older 500's I the airbox to fight carb icing.
It was easy to remove or install for conditions.
Would work for deep snow days
First of all, you have an incredible channel and it is noticeable what development you have made only in the last year both as a rider and filmmaker.
One thing I have thought about and felt that I wanted to mention (there will probably be many who don't agree with this) but in your clips, I actually think you drive better on the Polaris. Or at least I think your clips with the Polaris exceed the clips with the Ski-Doo.
This comes from a person who has ridden both Ski-Doo and Polaris and is completely impartial.
Continue with your awesome clips and your channel will grow incredibly much in the future no matter what brand you run!

Rivet on a flapper on the inside of your airbox, where the frog skins are. That way you can evac snow on the factory intakes when you burp it, and it shouldn't draw as much hot air, unless the factory locations are totally plugged.

One might argue that being able to set off an avalanche in a controlled safe manner is a positive thing vs. an unexpected trigger by *ignorant passers-by. Great video again 👏 thank you. *unaware , unsuspecting, distracted, I was in a group when a rider was trying to extricate his sled with his back to the hill. The hill sloughed off and buried him. Had many observers not been there it certainly would have been fatal. He never rode the mountains again 🙁
it would be really cool to se the avy in real speed, to show how fast they trigger and how fast they are from start to finish. (the first one)

SLP Powder valves are the ticket for the hole in your air box
I dont think its a very good idea to poke extra holes in the boost airbox. That air box is specialy designed for boost and pressure.
Vhok /boondocker is designing a snorkel for that sled to breath easier, vohk has a short vid on the issue and the fix. Vohk
also a mentioned something about a sensor in the airbox.
Pol is working on that as well.

It doesn’t really surprise me about the avalanche. Snow followed warm,rain,ice,really cold and a lot more snow.
And then Saturday night was really foggy in Revy which means it was warmer. I would be learry of every slope.

What people need to understand about riding in avalanche terrain is its all about acceptable risk. These guys are expert riders and their risk level assessment, especially in complex terrain, is going to accept a much higher level of risk than your average rider. If you ride in the mountains you must know and accept your experience level. If you over estimate your skill level and acceptable risk level it can have serious consequences for you and who ever you're riding with.
