- In this video, I set out on the snow with my two favourite Polaris Snowmobiles - The 9R and Boost! I put these snowmobiles head to head in different scenarios, in hopes to answer some of the most frequently asked questions. Great video, I love the explanations of why each sled did what they did, based on mechanics and physics, rather than opinion, and your empirical knowledge of what those mechanical influences have on the rider. Your analytics actually translate across the entire manufacturer spectrum and could be loosely applied to the boost or no boost conundrum. I would also like to say thanks for your self confidence in the comment section not falling prey to the petty Muskoka said, ski-doo said blah blah blah. You guys know each other, there is zero sense in allowing the internet to start a fire burning down the entire community. Stay in your wheel house as your own man.Thank you so much!

I'm glad you talked about the heavy feel and snow-bog issue of the boost. I definitely felt the heavy feel in every situation. It's 100% a handful to ride but once your used to what it's capable of it's a beast. Every point you and Nick made is exactly what I felt as well. One thing you didn't touch too much on that I noticed with my boost was... Jumping it is a little different then an NA. It's a little less predictable when leaving a lip of a jump just how much speed and pop your going to get. Sometimes I found myself going way deeper then expected or almost not clearing something due to how the power comes on. Short- run- in drops/gaps where you need speed and grunt to clear a required distance or very sniper landing stuff is not a boost type feature imo. Also boost intake vents get clogged way to easily on the deep days, that's when the boost is supposed to shine but gets killed by powder bog. Last gripe with my boost is myself and many others had DET issues with our boosts. Poor quality fuel possibly but I heard of a number of guys mixing race gas to help get rid of DET, which is a pain to be honest.
When I rode the 9r it was absolutely flawless even with a foot of snow on the dash, didn't matter. No gurlges, no bogs, crispy and torquey. That being said even with the boost gurgles and bogs the boost hands down out climbs the 9r every time in pretty much any snow condition. The real answer is they are 2 different weapons and you can't go wrong with either and really everyone needs one of each!

I think for myself I would be personally better suited on a well tuned 9r being a lighter, aggressive rider that likes to jump and ride technical shitty stuff.
Any thoughts on gearing the 9r up a little to gain some more track speed? I felt like it got to max track speed extremely quick which is awesome but maybe there's some room for say original QD 1 gearing to give some more track speed and not give too much up on the bottom?

I'm a mostly trail rider on the east coast and loved the Assault Boost so much I ordered one for next season. I found the demo I road hated 91 ethanol free. I rode the first day 93 octane and it ran like a beast. Second day I filled it with the 91 free and it was in DET prevention mode within a few miles. Changed the octane setting and it was still not running right. Spoke to my buddy who owns a 9R and a gas station in CO. He said he had so many guys complain about his fuel last winter in their Boosts yet he had zero issues running the same fuel in the 9R. Prob going to have to keep a bottle of octane boost just incase I have to fuel up at a station that doesn't have 93.

Exceptional take and well done as always. You're really taking this RUclips thing to the level it can be for snowmobiling, and I applaud you for that. I couldn't agree more on the comparison between the two sleds having ridden both of them back to back for two days each. I can't speak on the hang time, for I'm lucky to get 2ft off the ground, nor does my talent ever allow such things. But referring to your technical aspect between the two.... bang on. I put it like this, when asked.... confidence. My confidence is at an all-time high on the 9r. I've never felt more "I think that's doable" than I do now, owning the 9r. Being that I'm 44, that resonates loudly. This could be counterintuitive as well, being that you may become overconfident and really get into some pickles... haha. When on the boost, my confidence level is low. In fact, I'm constantly second-guessing myself during the run, for I simply don't possess the talent to run a turbo sled in technical terrain. This guesswork equals mistakes. Boy, do I make a lot of them on the boost. Heck, I make a ton on the 9r, but it's welcomed due to pushing my limits. That, to me, is the fundamental difference. The 9r allows the average mountain rider like myself to push and grow. This still amazes me that at my age, I can still improve. In saying all of this.... there's still nothing like a steep pull on a boost. What a sport we partake in. Thanks for the stellar content, buddy. You're doing it right.

Well said. I haven't ridden a 9R but I've always preferred a NA sled for mostly the same reasons. I feel like a NA sled makes you a better rider in many ways. It's personal preference and rider ability that should make your choice in sleds not because someone else rides one. All brands and models are great these days. Lots of options for everyone.
I completely agree, going from a turbo sled last season to the 9R has brought my confidence to a new level, thank you @turcotte16 for helping on the journey through your clinics and willingness to spread your knowledge and patience to show us old dudes(I'm 47) that we can still get it done!
@R - you are absolutely correct. We live in a time of advancement. All manufacturers are producing stellar products, and we, the consumers, are reaping the rewards. I still recall breaking out the tree trail at one of my fave riding areas. Often, this took all day even at times waiting until the next day so that it was set up.... just to access the riding area. For the last 5 years, single pulls into the alpine. What a sport. It's also legends like Brett that push the industry. Thankful for all of it. Safe riding!

I totally agree with your feelings on the 9R. I’m lucky enough to have a 9R and my brother is on his second year with his boost. Our riding zones in Colorado are primarily between 9500-11,000ft in elevation. We both prefer the 9R to the boost. The boost is amazing at going up and at maintaining track speed in really deep powder. In every other scenario the 9R outshines the boost in my humble opinion. Both are great sleds no doubt! Thanks for the content. You are such a talented rider I try to soak some of it up by watching!

Great video man! The content on the sleds and were each model/option shines most is really helpful. I can't try all the sleds or buy both without the wife killing me lol, so these really help narrow down my snowcheck decision. Pretty sure I'm going with a 155 2.75 Khaos 9R for the next snowcheck.

Great video! I rode a Khaos slash 650 146" for a couple of days and it was increadible compared to my 2020 850 155" Khaos. Much more responsive, more like a sharp knife like you said in the video on the 9R. The new chassie was much better than I could guess, also the slash tunell. For much of the snow and types of riding we have in south/mid Sweden it was supprisingly sufficient! I got everywhere my budy on 155" boost got to, which also is a better rider. We tried dragrace with the two sleds and they were pretty similar until 70km/h. I noticed a significant difference in how much quicker the 650 would rev than the 850 boost. Because of lighter pistons and lighter crankshaft i guess.
I ride mostly at 3000feet and believe the boost is a far worse choice compared to the 9R at this altitude. 6000 where you rode the difference in power is alot bigger.
Still awaiting my 9R, which will come after the season is over, feels like Polaris gave Scandinavia the finger. Still got no delivery date.

kyle pulsifer replaced every bolt & nut in the 9R with titanium bolts & nuts; looks like it really pays, but he never revealed the total weight lost & brett your commentary is the feed back everyone was waiting for, & the backflip was epic...
imagine not having any kids and responsibilities and just wrenching on your sled so much that you had time to do all that? hahaha i wish! I’m at the point now where my schedules so busy i just wanna put gas and oil in them and rip! they’re so good out of the box, but there’s always going to be “mod guys”!
@@turcotte16 Modern snowmobiles are now what sport bikes have been for decades, that is worlds better then most people that throw a leg over them. Back 20 years ago mod sleds were almost needed and a right of passage into the mountains. Now you modify very little unless you want to.
Great video Brett! I've found that the BoonDocker tunnel exiting exhaust fixes the right-hand sidehill bog issue. Allows me to run the Boost in super deep snow without any issues.

God damn these things are fun aren’t they. What’s the saying about having fun without clothes or whatever? Well, I can guarantee riding a sled is the most fun you can have with any amount of clothes on. However, I don’t suggest you try it unclothed unless there’s a hot tub nearby. That’s fun too!😂

Great video! I'm on a boost 165 and agree with the difference in feel, but no one ever talks about the gyroscopic principle of rigidity in space the turbo exerts on the ride. Like a top, the turbo wants to stay where it's at in relation to space and the further away from the sled's center of gravity the greater the leverage it has to do so. I jumped back and forth between my sled and a 165 850 last weekend and was dumbfounded by how much easier and playful that NA was to ride, for next year I think I'll be happy to trade the hill pulling power for a more fun and nimble sled in the trees. I've shaved about 20 pounds off the boost and the 850 was all stock... still a crazy difference in responsiveness... rigidity in space.
i feel you 100% that turbo spinning does add a bunch of rotating mass, without doing a deep technical video i chose not to go that far..
This!!! I’m a Ski Doo guy but got an N/A and a Turbo this year. I’ve had a few days where I’ve been able to bounce back and forth and always feel much more comfortable and nimble on the N/A. I find myself getting tired faster working the Turbo throughout the day. I’ll be selling my Turbo and going back to N/A’s. By no means am I an expert rider but this is my experience.
Interesting concept. I'd like to see both sleds hanging and record the movement while running and with throttle input. Now that would be interesting. Personally, I don't think it will make much difference due to impeller size, weight, and shaft length, combine with real world conditions ie, ( being in a trench and the weight of the sled and gravity for example) but who knows. Love to see it, though. Maybe Brett can set something up. I'm sure we'd all like to see the effects a turbo has on these sleds. Very cool observation, though! 👍
I think the powder bog may be from the overall volume of exhaust the boost needs to flow to make the additional power, especially at elevation. The compression ratio is lower on the boost but overall cylinder pressures are higher when the blower is spooled. Cool video man, thanks for taking the time to do the head to head! Another crossover episode with Muskoka would be awesome if you guys get the chance
I thought about this too. Yes, you are correct that cylinder pressures are higher on the Boost, but only if the turbo is spooled and making lots of boost, which isn't typically happening when your doing techi riding.

I cannot wait to get this. I am going to get the 9R because you just proved to me that I don’t have to use my arms as much because that sucks, but I’m not going to do it like what you’re doing anyways, I just wanna be able to go off the beaten path, not always trail riding. It seems like the 9R does a lot without too many issues. It’s like you said it seems like you know if you want to make a decision it’s going to do what you want it to do instead of it doing it for you. I don’t want that. I actually got hurt February 13 for the first time in my life, I’ve been snowmobiling since I was 5, I did some thing on a sled that I shouldn’t have done I made a mistake. Had a split second decision and buried the sled instead of killing myself, but I did hurt my ribs pretty bad and I went snowmobiling the week after still hurt on a more powerful sled and I was a little afraid to get back on but I got back on and I’m OK. I’ve been a couple times since, it’s all good even though I did knock my rib cage on the left side out of place it’s all good. Nothing will ever keep me from snowmobiling. I’m 48. I’ve been doing it since I was younger It’s my passion. I am going Saturday last time this season. I’ll always do it until I can’t. Thank you for showing me this. You are an awesome rider! I mean you’re freaking fearless! That’s the one thing I’ve never tried doing a flip on a snowmobile and I’m super light. I just have never tried it plus when I was a kid we weren’t doing stuff like that with snowmobiles. They weren’t built to do that. My dad did crazy stuff on them but my dad was an expert snowmobiler. I I would say I am on a different level now. I get a little scared get too cautious. I am 48 when I was younger I did a lot of crazy things on my sleds that really weren’t meant to do I still did them. I can’t even imagine what kind of fun I would’ve had if these type of sleds were created when I was younger. My first big snowmobile I ever had was a Indy Polaris 500 so yeah I do like to trail ride but I also like to go off the beaten path and I usually use a 850 but I think this would be a much better choice, thanks for helping me and seeing both of them because I was debating between them and you are freaking awesome. You remind me of my dad… as a snowmobiler. 😊

After 650km on the Boost, I’m convinced the 9R is THE sled. I had the opportunity to do a similar back to back to back comparison with identical sleds (165 Pro RMK’s), identical suspension and handlebar setups, both are manual start. In my case though it was Boost vs 850. The difference in how light, nimble, and predictable the 850 felt versus the Boost was mind blowing. I think it has as much to do with low end response as it does the 25lb weight difference. The terrain was mellow hills, 2-3ft fresh, and relatively tight trees and the confidence level immediately went up ten fold when I jumped on that 850. I can only imagine how much more so the 9R would feel. Thinking of Snowchecking a 9R Pro RMK 165 with 3.25” series 9 track for 2025. Boost is a blast on big, deep, open slopes, but everywhere else, for someone at my age and level, I think I’m sold on NA. Oh and my Boost has the iBexx clutch as well. The things you guys were saying from 26:32 to 27:12 were exactly what I experienced! Also, the thing Nick was saying about the Boost requiring a lot more pushing force with the feet combined with a lot more counter steer to turn the thing as compared to the NA is absolutely true!

I've been looking for a video like this all year! I had both of these sleds rented to do this comparison with and they didn't show up in time. So I got stuck with a Ski-Doo turbo.

Very good Very complete comparison the only point that everyone doing a boost vs 9r seems to only hint at is density altitude. which is directly related to hp to track speed of the boost and how much is lacking from any N/A sled example a 120hp engine at sea level is 6000' is 105hp in a perfect world still great comparison
so many variables could be discussed if i were to break down every scientific detail lol

Really good side by side, but it goes without saying that the boost shines at higher elevations, where a NA motor like the 9r is at a disadvantage right out of the gate. I'd love to see a similar video by someone at lower elevations for those of us who ride almost exclusively below 5000, and typically in the 3000 range.

Running a 850 Khaos here in Alaska, but snow checking the 9r in a few weeks for my style and location of riding. If we rode at altitude on a regular basis (like up at Summit Lake or in Delta AK), hands down, my choice would be the boost...but I'd rather put that extra money toward functional upgrades (ie, clutch, can, bumpers, rails, etc). Less rotating mass, instant throttle, lighter weight, and basically the same power makes the choice easy for me.
One of these years, we'll trailer down and see what BC has to offer.

When I put a turbo on my Alpha and dropped the stock can, there wasn't much weight difference from stock. I'm guessing on the boost if you dropped the stock can weight would be much closer to 9r. The biggest thing I felt riding the 9r vs 850 was the low end torque, meaning when you give er from a stop, all your power is immediate. That's impressive.
i love the quick response feel of the 9R from a dead stop! they being said i have buddies on 850s who are plenty capable and we share the same terrain quite often!

Great informative vid! But at that static start hill climp test Boost did definitely go over old track, first try on 9r tracks and second attemp on both old tracks.
Sorry my bad 🤥 watched again and at first Boost run it didnt go over old track. At second try a little but maybe so little that it didnt make big benefit for boost.
I’ve experienced the snow bog issue.
I’m anxiously awaiting a solution. Was going to can it and fab up a v-line type extra exit.
I like the boost a lot. But that issue is not liked. I do a lot of side hilling. Lots of fun there.

In the mountains with the Boost not having an intercooler you run into Power issues?
Out on the lake racing boost is having a hard time with no intercooler. It's not the PowerHouse you would expect. On ice the old 2000 model year 800 xcr with my port work would destroy the Boost.

I feel like to get the most out of the boost you need good forearm strength and lightning reflexes because it builds so much freaking track speed especially lower snow conditions.
it’s not that my lack of muscular endurance makes me think differently if this sled, i’m a high functioning professional athlete, this is my job! it really comes down to the weight and power and managing both at the same time!

not fighting at all to make it feel like an rmk. i’m just saying that i have my suspension setup really dialled and am not noticing significant amount of ski lift, i’m able to control that front end and take my sled where i want it to go!

I know you’re not a skidoo guy - but I would be super interested to see you ride one of their NAs and their turbos just to see what your thoughts were. I probably would enjoy Polaris, but I started on a skidoo and don’t want to make a brand/dealer change.

I think a 9r with a gear down kit would be a real weapon and a bit closer to the boost as far as climb speed goes.

@@turcotte16 do you have onboard video showing track speed on both sleds from that hill climb test? I would be interested to see what max speed for each is. With a gear down, the 9r could get closer to 1:1 on the clutches and operate much more efficiently and spin up quicker. On my 850, I found it was 100% worth sacrificing top speed that I could never use anyway for quick spin up and higher track speed in the powder using a big gear reduction.

Can we get a comparison of the two hanging in the shop with some throttle input to see the gyroscopic effects of the turbo, if any? I think this observation made by a couple of your followers would make a highly interesting video I for one, would love to see the results.

Great video! I do want to ask your opinion. 9r Khaos 146 2.6” track Vs the 9r Khaos 155 2.75” track. So you notice much difference between the 2?
The reason I ask if I’m fortunate to be able to buy 2 sleds to have. Seeing I already have my 23 boost khaos 155 I am hardly looking at buying an 146” 9r to have. Some really light and not having the same sled.
the 155 is def more of a mountain sled, that being said with a bunch of effort and ability the 146 will get u there too! i’d suggest a 155 in your stable
those polaris boosts appear to climb until you compare it to the skidoo boost.. then it sucks lol. they just trench instead of climbing when it gets super deep

Great video ! But I’m still having a very hard time deciding I’m on a 850 na right now and love it the 9r seems like the right fit for me as I love tree riding, but for the price I think I might as well go for a boost. If you had to make the hard decision of only having one, what would you pick ?

Love power, so I also like all thr turbo stuff. Big power is fun and can save your butt in some situations, but I feel like over all I would like the 9r. I would definitely prefer better reliability over power, which is why I bought a 22 arctic cat m8000 this year. But after riding different machines, I'm amazed at how easy the Polaris is to ride, love the way they handle. So may be making the switch. But I believe from experience that Polaris is the least reliable.
What is your opinion on theses sled as for as a reliability standpoint, Polaris vs other brands and boost vs 9r?

the reliability thing can’t be chosen to one brand. they all have failures, some people are also just really good at exposing all things bad. to be honest my polaris sleds have been more reliable than my previous years on cats even…goin to have to take the good with the bad and just get out there! i see a lot of misperceptions about polaris, it seems as they’re an easy target right now, but i stand behind my brand and do truly love their sleds!
What elevation are you testing these at? Just curious the power loss in the 9R there. Awesome comparison by the way. My 9r has way more potential than I do lol.

What elevation? Mass air flow and cylinder pressure will most likely be greater with the boost even though compression is lower, so exhaust bogging is probably more due to the turbo stealing the energy out of the exhaust flow than it is low compression.

On the boost with the lower compression that can cause powder bog. Is that something Polaris could address like increasing compression or does it have to be lower for the 850 motor?
typically when you turbo charge anything you lower the compression ratio, there is some middle
ground to be had, but for reliability reasons it’s best to ere on the safe side for consumer
I think you fully sold me on the 9r! One question though kinda related to this video, you were on 2 khaos sleds but in a previous video you said you preferred the pro, what made you change your mind?
for sake of comparison i threw a khaos skid in the 9R, i was actually able to find a good shock setting that’s somehwere between pro stability, and khaos radness!

Maybe you need to get with @muskokafreerider again and do a compare on the boost vs. the Doo Turbo. I know it'll probably never happen on this channel this year since the G5 Turbo seems to be far better than the Boost. It just seems like the G5 Turbo doesn't have the turbo lag so you can ride it like an NA and then when you need the turbo it's there... But that's just from watching a LOT of videos. Boost seems like you have to ride it fast or it doesn't do well. Would also love a 9R vs. G5 NA.
might have to get out with him on the boost for sure! the fact that one is better than the other seems a little invalid, these sleds are far superior to either matt’s of my own riding ability, so basing it straight off performance would be a difficult argument to validate. i can get my NA sled in most places where turbos won’t…and vice versa, you can have all the power and response in the world, but if you can’t manage the power/weight, the performance gain doesn’t matter so much.

Hey Brett what settings do you have for the mic? When u talk it almost drowns out the sled in a good way I’ve got the same setup with the mic ran through the helmet padding but the sled seems to drown out my voice, thanks and wicked video🤘🏼

If you were riding with say Muskoka Freerider, could you jump on the Ski-doo turbo and compare it to the Boost or would Polaris frown on that since you are sponsored by them? Are you limited as to what you can ride based on your sponsor?

I'm on a 850 Pro 165 this year. wanting to add a 2nd sled, was thinking about a 155 but with how much light snow we have down here in CO/WY wondering what anybody's feedback on going 9r Khaos 165... Maybe keep the benefits of the long track but snappier and looser??

We're both sleds clutches stock? I've seen in yours or Nick's previous video, where you both swapped sleds (your 9r) and were commenting on the performance of each other's clutch kits that were installed.
both sleds are stock OEM clutching parts, i’ve played with some springs and weights on each but stuck to only OEM parts keeping in mind this video was going to happen!
Polaris factory riders in 2022 " the boost is just like a na sled with zero lag it great""
In 2023 " the boost is laggy and so heavy " it getting hard to trust these guys opinions when every year it a new story, and when they gotta push the new product the old one is totally different then what was claimed when it came out last year.
I feel Brett is the most unbiased and honest of them all, and admits any bias he has, but it will be interesting to see what gets pushed in 2024
thanks for the comment Jayson, i actually curated this video idea on my own, each rider has different opinions for sure, none of us get “coached” into content by Polaris! Don’t get me wrong, i lovvvve the power of the boost, and there’s certainly days where i’m on it and am like “hell yeah! this is the shit” and there’s other days where you’ll catch me wishing i was on the 9R….and vice versa! Both sleds are really awesome, i just think that there’s no “perfect” sled, but there’s a right sled for the right day, of majority of days for that matter!
To be fair, there was no 9R to compare to for extended periods last year. They've also had a full year to re-evaluate the Boosts. In the end, Pro or not, everyone has an opinion, and those opinions change over time. Take what you want from this valuable feedback and buy what you want. Simple. There is no need to disparage Pro riders that you want or get an autograph from. Sledding is a very tight community at the top, and I'd say from personal experience with a lot of them, they're all very honest and trustworthy people, if they weren't they wouldn't get rides for long.
@Turcotte16 I 100 percent agree with everything you said. Which is why I'll be getting a 9r to pair with my boost.
My issue isn't that polaris told you to do this. It all the videos from last year saying the boost has na throttle response and no lag. To now it laggy and heavy. Honestly I don't remember you even testing a boost so it unfair to really call it out on your video. Of all the factory rides your opinion I feel is the most honest and unbiased. Actually comparing them side x side vs just selling things.
It just hard to trust people who say one thing in 22 then change in 23 to sell a new product when they don't really need to.
@jaysonsorensen594 I'd bet Polaris has never told him to say anything. I've had dozens of sponsors, made plenty of deals with sponsors for other riders, and have never had a rep ask me or any riders I promoted to say anything at all. It just doesn't happen imo. Cheers!
@R - I know there was no 9r. So after a year they all the sudden figured out that is was laggy and didn't ride like a na? Burandt was on it for years before it came out. Here my point you can say the 9r is instant throttle it got so much more torque vs the boost vs having to walk back what you sold people on last year.
It funny the opinions only change when the new product comes out vs mid-season. Also I admitted to saying it unfair to bring this up on Brett's video cause I don't believe he had a boost enough to make claims to walk back. Just watching the video it made me think of it..
We can be a tight knit community and still call out fault where we see it. Doesn't mean I think there full of shit it just obvious they are trying to push certain things over others. It also why Muskoka gets so many views. He isn't sponsored rides all types of sleds so people can count on him to tell the truth.

What?! It has a turbo, it will still have much higher exhaust gas velocity then a NA motor, cuz the compressor wheel is still spinning with momentum when off throttle

not really, pretty much identical other than this sled uses khaos rails and shocks

The boost is not way less maneuverable because of the 20 Lb's weight difference, it is all because of the turbo spinning. That extra gyroscopic inertia is huge. Do you remember those little gyroscopes we all got as presents when we were kids in the 80's and 90's There is a reason why Chris Burandt goes to great lengths to remove rotating weight off of all his motors; grams spinning at thousands of rpm's generates hundreds of pounds of force.
i agree with your theory 100%! but for the sake of making this video clear and simple for the average viewer, i chose not to dive sooooo deep into rotating mass, grams, etc.
20 extra pounds will have a negative effect. Period. I haven't ridden a 9R yet, but I bet it's the most balanced sled ever mass produced to date.
@@turcotte16 It is pretty easy to say that because of the turbo spinning it is more stable like a gyroscope.
Don't you miss CR 500's, not much heavier but the beast were fun to tame.

Not matter what ya do the clutch weighs much more than a turbo wheel and always spins so the turbo gyro force isn’t that significant of a factor
